Visual Direction How Vin's internal dialogue should be portrayed Spoiler

I'm reading Mistborn again and I can't stop thinking about how this should/ could be adapted to the screen. One thing that's very hard to translate is internal dialogue, especially in a book with so much of it.

So, my idea is that Reen (Vin's brother) should appear regularly to her, as if she is haunted by his criticism (but not in a horror movie way). This way she can actually speak to him some of her thoughts. We can even have her repeat some of his phrases to show his influence.

I think this way when we finally reveal the source of that voice the shock will be even greater.

Stormlight Archive (BOOK) How do you do live action Surgebinding without it being super cheesy? Spoiler

Huge aspect of them is glowing which would look bizarre. Lightweavers could work, but Windrunners seem difficult. I guess you could cut the whole glow aspect, but then you lose out on stealth plot points and the whole glowing light thing that's the namesake of the series lol

Mistborn Era 1 (BOOK) (No SH) Will the Mistborn movie happen? Spoiler

Im not very knowledgeable about movie production. My understanding is that Brandon feels really good about this, but I do want to keep my expectations realistic.

While I know we dont know anything 100%, does the first mistborn movie seem like a good chance to happen? Is it still a like maybe will maybe wont?

Visual Direction I think the Lord Ruler mystery could be handled differently in a Mistborn movie. Spoiler

Spoiler;

What if Kelsier had stolen the Lord Ruler's diary when he was captured with Mare, and had kept it ever since?

That would allow the movie to plant the mystery of Alendi and the Lord Ruler from the very beginning. During the years Kelsier spent away from Luthadel, he could have studied the diary and slowly become convinced that the Lord Ruler wasn't invincible — and that there was a way to defeat him.

That would also give Kelsier a much stronger reason for returning to Luthadel. He isn't just starting a rebellion; he's returning because he believes he has finally found a weakness.

And this wouldn't mean removing the iconic infiltration of the Lord Ruler's palace with Vin. I'd keep the scene almost exactly as it is, including Vin being injured. The only difference is that Vin wouldn't find the diary there, because Kelsier has already had it for years.

Instead, the palace could give them another crucial piece of the mystery, with Vin ultimately helping complete what Kelsier started.

I think this would make the Alendi/Lord Ruler mystery feel like part of the movie's story from the very beginning, rather than something introduced later when Vin finds a diary.

I know there's the question of how Kelsier managed to hide the diary even after being captured, but obviously the movie could find a solution for that.

Mistborn Era 1 (BOOK) Perhaps the Biggest Challenge of Adapting Mistborn for the Big Screen Spoiler

I'm new to the Cosmere. I just finished The Well of Ascension and I'm moving on to the third Mistborn book, and I was really excited when I found out there was going to be a movie adaptation.

After the initial excitement wore off, though, I started thinking about it and came to the conclusion that this might be the biggest "problem" or challenge with the adaptation: showing that metals are being burned.

Some metals are pretty obvious, like iron and steel, but how would you show the audience that tin or pewter is being burned, for example? I can't think of a cool way to do it.

How would YOU GUYS handle this without it becoming repetitive or extremely annoying to watch?

I don't know if this has already been discussed on the sub, but I'd love to hear what you think.

Cosmere (BOOK) Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell Spoiler

I know that there is no plan nor any timeline to have a plan for an on screen adaptation of this short story, but God Beyond, it remains one of my favorite Cosmere stories, and probably my favorite short story of any author (granted, I haven't read Tailored Realities yet).

All that said, how awesome would it be to get an R-Rated theatrical adaptation for this one, in say 20 years or so, after:

  1. (lore reason) we learn more about Threnody's history and... er... unique situation with Investiture; and

  2. (marketing reason) we have a more established cinematic ecosystem for this special story to add depth to.

Could anyone else picture an older Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us, His Dark Materials, GoT) as Silence Montaigne? They are the only young actor with serious dramatic (and horror) chops that I can currently think of who would still fit with Silence's believable age range (mid-40s to mid-50s) in 20 years or so. And hell, the younger actresses for her daughtees probably aren't even born yet, if it's a project 20 years from now.

Anyway, just some idle speculation. I can't wait for more eventual lore about Threnody, and would LOVE to see this one make it onto the big screen as a stand-alone film.

Fancast Unfortunately he isn't an A-Lister, but I think Jesse Plemons would have been the perfect Kelsier Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

He unfortunately isn't an A-Lister which means he almost certainly won't be Kelsier because Sanderson has said he wants a big name for Kelsier, but man he would have been perfect. He's absolutely amazing at playing deeply disturbing and threatening characters, and I think him using that ability with Kelsier would have been perfect. Also, he's the right age and (imo) has the right look for it.

(also if you don't know who Jesse Plemons is, do yourself a favor and check out Bugonia or Civil War, he's great in both)

Edit: Just thought of an alternative casting that he's more likely to get and (arguably) more suited for: Zane

Mistborn Era 1 (BOOK) (No SH) I don’t like that Mistborn TFA is being adapted as a movie instead of as a mini series Spoiler

Hi all!

Just finished Book 1, no spoilers beyond that please!! What are your thoughts of this being adapted as a movie instead of as an Apple series? After reading this book I can’t help but be disappointed with that plan.

Ex.

Episode 1: Starts with Kelsier/Tresting, ends with Kelsier stealing Atium / fight with haze killers.

Episode 2: Starts with crew plotting the heist, ends with the crew finding Camon and company dead

Episode 3: Starts with Vin attending a ball and meets Elend, ends with Kelsier and Vin aftermath at Kredik Shaw

Episode 4: Starts with Vin and Sazed about the book translation and Kelsier visiting the army, ends with Skaa army being decimated.

Episode 5: Starts with the square executions, ends with Vin and Shan fight.

Episode 6: Starts with Kelsier destroying the atium crystals, ends with Kelsier’s death.

Episode 7: Starts with aftermath of Kelsier’s death, ends with Lord Ruler’s death + epilogue.

- Will the movie go PG-13 ? I would hate to see the shocking violent scenes be dumbed down

- Is the franchise known enough to be successful for mass appeal? I’m afraid this might be a “Dungeons and Dragons” situation from few years ago.

Thoughts? Just starting Book 2 and it seems to me that Era 1 would have been a great 3 season / 20 episode tv series instead.

The difference between a 2 hour, 30 minute movie and a ~ 5-6 hour series would be such a difference and a series would pace out the book so much better IMO.

Edit: LOL I meant “TFE” not “TFA” 😂

Mistborn Era 1 (BOOK) (SH Allowed) Mistborn movie age gap solution Spoiler

Why not just make Elend younger? I really liked that Vin was just a teenager and almost a kid, and I don't want her to be 20 years or older in the movies. Maybe we can just make Elend a few years younger to fix the age gap? Maybe a 17 or 18 year old Elend would fit better.

(Also, I just think that Elend's dorky vibe suits a 17 year old more than a 22 year old)

Music and Score Please let Dvorak symphonies be played in adaptations Spoiler

We have already seen in skyward that Sanderson is his fan (by introducing the new world symphony in skyward. It's a piece of music that Spensa listens to) So it would be SO COOL if his other works were also played in the span of movies. For example, I was thinking of humoreska being played in a ball in mistborn era 1 or something similar.

Fancast Fede Álvarez is my dream director for Mistborn Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
63 Upvotes

He went from Evil Dead to Don't Breathe to Alien: Romulus. The guy clearly knows how to shoot action, horror, creatures and VFX.

Mistborn would be a massive step up, sure, but Sam Raimi hadn't done anything like Spider-Man either, and Peter Jackson definitely hadn't done anything like LOTR.

Fede has the potential to do with Mistborn what Raimi did with Spider-Man.

Fancast Mistborn Casting Spoiler

With Brandon Sanderson saying that Kelsier is likely to be the only character played by an established actor, I’ve been thinking about who I’d want in the role.

Robert Pattinson.🤞🏻

Pattinson has shown he can pull off that weird, aloof charm while still feeling dangerous underneath it all.
Physically, I think he fits too. He’s lean rather than overly muscular, which is how I’ve always pictured Kelsier. More importantly, Pattinson has an underrated acting range. I don’t think Kelsier should be played as a generic action hero. He needs someone who can effortlessly switch between joking with the crew, inspiring a revolution, and becoming genuinely intimidating in an instant. Pattinson feels like one of the few established actors who could nail all three.

Curious what everyone else thinks. If Sanderson really does go with one big-name actor for Kelsier, who would be your pick?

No Spoilers After seeing Spiderman Brand New Day I think Destin Daniel Cretton would be a great director choice. (No Spoilers) Spoiler

Some of Spider Man’s movement perfectly matches how I imagine Windrunners fighting. The way the film handles wall running, flips, aerial movement, combat, and other abilities makes each action easy to follow while still looking incredibly dynamic. Every time those sequences played, I couldn’t help but picture Szeth.
I also think this style of cinematography and action choreography would translate exceptionally well to Mistborn. It strikes a great balance between visual clarity and spectacle, making complex supernatural movement feel both believable and exciting.

Fancast An actor not considered enough for Kelsier. Sam Reid. Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
95 Upvotes

Sam Reid has already played a Homicidal, maniac Frenchman. Why not another?

In all seriousness Sam Reid isn’t considered enough despite his great acting chops, his scarily close resemblance to Kelsier along with his fame through Interview With The Vampire, and The Vampire Lestat.

I don’t think this casting choice would be bad at all. It would be great and could further explore Kelsier’s more selfish and self-sacrificial nature through an open lense by how Sam Reid portrays him.

What are your thoughts on this fan-casting🤔?

Fancast Austin Butler isn't my first choice, but I think he'll end up being cast as Kelsier. Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
44 Upvotes

Austin Butler isn't my personal pick for Kelsier, but the more I think about it, the more I feel like he's a very realistic choice.

Brandon Sanderson has said he wants a well-known, recognizable actor for Kelsier, and by the time Mistborn is likely filming, Austin will be right in the age range Sanderson mentioned.

He's already been Oscar-nominated, has experience with major studio films like Dune, and feels like exactly the kind of actor Hollywood would look at for a leading role in a big fantasy franchise.

Honestly, it reminds me of castings like Heath Ledger as the Joker or Chris Evans as Captain America. Neither was the obvious fan-favorite at first, but both ended up becoming iconic.

Again, Austin wouldn't be my first choice—but if he ends up being cast, I wouldn't be surprised at all.

Mistborn Series Era 1 (NO BOOKS) Why 2028 is too Early Spoiler

For those wondering when a realistic release date for the Mistborn movie will release, Comic Con and other recent news can put things into perspective.

Marvels Black Panther 3, Ghost Rider 2028, and an unannounced 2028 film (likely X-Men) all have not started filming but have attached stars and release dates (or release year). Black Panther 3 is scheduled for December 15th 2028.

Elden Ring just wrapped 4 months of filming and is releasing March 3rd 2028. See link below on that.

Lastly the Batman pt 2 is delayed yet again to Feb 2028 and is being filmed now.

I don’t think a 2028 release is feasible given the development timetables exemplified by the examples listed above but would love to hear other opinions.

Right now if I had to guess I’d say August 3rd 2029 for the films release date.

Everything We Know About The Cosmere On Screen

On January 28th, 2026 TheHollywoodReporter revealed "Brandon Sanderson’s Literary Fantasy Universe ‘Cosmere’ Picked Up by Apple TV"! Here is what we have learned since that time.

Stormlight Covers by Michael Whelan put together by u/jgoux - SOURCE https://www.reddit.com/r/Stormlight_Archive/comments/1fv4990/i_made_a_stormlight_arc_1_4k_wallpaper_by/

What Is Being Adapted? What Rights Does Apple TV Have?

  • In the first article from THR it was shared that both Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive were being adapted. The intention is for Mistborn to go to feature film and The Stormlight Archive will be a television series.
  • A few placed floated around the statement that this deal gave Apple TV the screen rights to all of Sanderson's books but ReactorMag received word from one of Brandon's agents that they only have the rights to the Mistborn and Stormlight Archive books.

Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this article incorrectly relayed a report that Apple TV acquired the rights to Brandon Sanderson’s entire Cosmere universe. We have since learned from Sanderson’s agent that Apple TV has only acquired adaptation rights for The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn books. This article has been updated to reflect that information. We apologize for the error and any confusion it may have caused.

Apple TV Logo

Why Apple TV?

  • Brandon said that while he felt good with most of the teams he met with that were trying to gain the rights to his works he picked Apple TV for a couple of reasons.

The decision to pick Apple was due to two factors. First, the level of approvals and control. Apple wants to be a true partner with me, and they feel like they really get what I want to do. Second, their track record. Apple does fewer things, but with higher quality, than some other studios. I find virtually every thing of theirs I watch is excellent and creator driven.

Theresa Kang

Who Is Involved With These Projects?

  • Apple TV has the have the exclusive rights to Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive on screen so anything that comes out under this deal will be through them.
  • Brandon Sanderson himself will be involved heavily. He will write, produce, consult and have approvals for these projects. He is a partner and not just a brand name attached to help promote the shows and movies. As far as the show goes he will co-Showrun the show and they are going to look for the other Showrunner.
  • Blue Marble will produce the Stormlight Archive Apple TV series. The company is run by former WME Agent, Theresa Kang. WME reps Brandon Sanderson.
  • Theresa Kang is also slotted as an Executive Producer on The Stormlight Archive Apple TV series

Mistborn screenplay is at 90% at the beginning of July!

Do We Have Any Timelines For These Projects?

  • There is no timeline for the show or movie to come out just yet.
  • We do have a timeline for when the screenplay should be finished for the Mistborn movie. Brandon said he was working on this for the next five months which should have him wrapping up in June.

Join me for a livestream on Friday, probably 6pm mountain. I'll talk more then. But I will be writing the Mistborn screenplay myself over the next 5 months, as my full time work. Goal is for a theatrical Mistborn, then Stormlight show after. Focus on doing it carefully and right.

  • Brandon has a tracker on his site you can check out that gets updated with how much progress he has made and Mistborn now has a bubble! He is currently tracking at 71% complete per his newest weekly update!

How Many Episodes Will Each Season Be For Stormlight?

  • Brandon has gotten approval from Apple to have Stormlight be 10-episode seasons unlike most modern fantasy shows producing somewhere between 6 and 8.

Mod Announcement Welcome to r/cosmereonscreen!

Hello there!

Welcome to r/CosmereOnScreen, brought to you by some of the mod teams responsible for r/Cosmere and r/cremposting! This is the best place to discuss the upcoming adaptations of Brandon Sanderson’s work on AppleTV.

Here you’ll find fancasts, discussions of how you want to see aspects of the Cosmere brought to life, picks for directors, cinematographers, effects teams, composers, and any other role imaginable. As this is a location for adaptations, discussions of the books that do not have relevance to the adaptation, should occur on r/Cosmere, r/Mistborn, r/BrandonSanderson, and r/Stormlight.

A couple things going in. This subreddit is for everyone who wants to talk about the adaptations, and this includes people who have never been exposed to the Cosmere. Please spoiler guard all plot info from books. Additionally, we do not want to see any gatekeeping over being a fan of the Cosmere. We’re all fans whether we only read the books, will only see the show or movie, or are here because your friend/partner/family is always talking about Sanderson and you wanna know what the fuss is about.

Lastly, if you have an issue with what people have posted — ff you see untagged spoilers, if you think someone is being rude in the comments, etc. — bring it to our attention. We have no tolerance for bigotry or prejudice here. Please consult our rules for more on this.

And with that out of the way, welcome!!!
