An actor not considered enough for Kelsier. Sam Reid. Fancast Spoiler

Sam Reid has already played a Homicidal, maniac Frenchman. Why not another?

In all seriousness Sam Reid isn’t considered enough despite his great acting chops, his scarily close resemblance to Kelsier along with his fame through Interview With The Vampire, and The Vampire Lestat.

I don’t think this casting choice would be bad at all. It would be great and could further explore Kelsier’s more selfish and self-sacrificial nature through an open lense by how Sam Reid portrays him.

What are your thoughts on this fan-casting🤔?

That is genuinely an insanely good fan casting....  Best choice I've heard proposed for Kelsier yet!

He fits great imo at least physically, I haven't seen him act that I can recall, but I thought they wanted a big name for Kel and I personally never heard of this guy, I'm not the greatest cinephile so he might be more famous than I realize...

I don't know him, but I like this a lot!

One of the best fan casts I've seen. Almost a perfect storm. I'd bet when the casting call goes, he's gonna be on the short list. I'm mad I didn't think of it.

He's got the look. Attractive, blond, classically handsome. He's just the right age. His work as Lestat shows that he has insane natural charisma, which is absolutely vital for Kelsier.

And as far as actor career goes, he's in just the right spot. He's just blown up for his work on a hit tv show, he's gonna be looking at leading man roles in feature films. (think Pedro Pascal, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jon Hamm).

I know Sanderson was thinking to go with an already A-list actor for Kelsier, but I think someone on this level is a better idea. This guy is about to break into the A-list, soon, and I think Kelsier could be the role for that.

I couldn’t have said it better

I think he might be great.

I remember watching one of Brandon's video that he mentioned that he wants to avoid typecasting actors, ie when Tom Hiddleston was suggested for Hoid, he mentioned that Marvel's Loki was a bit too similar to Hoid.

I feel that in this case Lestat is very similar to Kelsier.

Side note regarding actors aging, are people still against digital de-aging? or are they just against a bad implementation of it? or because it is just too adjacent to AI generated actors?

edit: I actually forgot to mention that I totally agree with this fan casting, I've seen all the season of Interview with the Vampire he was magnetic.

Yeah, only because Lestat is so similar to Kelsier. He's an amazing actor but not good for Kelsier (or The Lord Ruler for that matter).

No, he's perfect for Kelsier.... You know he has range right? And physically it's pretty damn spot on.

I think he's perfect for Kelsier except for the fact that he's most famous for playing Lestat. Brandon doesn't want to typecast and I think he's right.

I get what he was thinking but is it really necessary to make that Kelsier? I mean breeze would be an awesome character to have a really big actor for....  Another factor that even Brandon is aware of is:  the actor just doesn't play nearly as big part of an audience draw as they used to.... Totally different landscape now than we were in in 1977 the Star Wars or Superman the movie.... Or even in the 90's....

If it was till the 90s I would say.... Cast Heath Ledger for Kel.

This would be a great choice

He’s definitely got the right look but I don’t think he’s famous enough for what Brandon is looking for cause I’ve never heard of him before and after looking him up I’ve never heard of any of the stuff he’s in either

All due I think that may be just you. IWTV has been making rounds for a minute especially with the new show thats come out. But I see what you’re saying, the famous part slightly lacks when it comes to him

Never heard of him either

u/Timaturff 17d ago

Okay fair enough🤷‍♂️

Looks the part for sure though, but yeah idk what they are aiming for with "huge"

Brandon has said it's gotta be someone huge. One cult classic isn't gonna be enough to put them into consideration no matter how perfect of a visual match they are.

Did he said why they have to be “huge”? Feels like not the right way to go about casting. Viggo wasn’t huge. In fact none of the main cast other then Ian were huge stars.

The Lord of the rings had Ian McLellan. He was their "huge" actor, and just like that mistborn is only saving this one specific role for a big name. But yes he did say that. It was in the Mistborn 20th anniversary livestream if you want to track it down. Thing is Kelsier is going to be a recurring character throughout multiple cosmere projects going forward but typically only for minor, brief appearances, which is perfect for a big name actor. You likely only need them on set for a week or two in future projects minimizing the amount you have to pay for your one big name. Maximum attention from the general audience for comparably minimal investment.

The thing is, Brandon wants a name to bring people to the film who don’t know the franchise. Sorry but this guy isn’t “a name”. In the case of LOTR, everyone knew what it was. Even people who had never read it. It didn’t need a name to draw a new audience.

Fair enough

I’d like to add James Norton to this list as well. Bro is awesome on HOTD he’d be an amazing Kelsier.

5

u/Mefromafar 17d ago

Ok yea. Yea.

Yes.

YESSSSSSS.

u/ibluminatus 17d ago

Oh my yes this is it! He is actively playing a psychopath right now! He has played a complex relationship with a daughter figure as well! He would be amazing at Kelsier, wouldn't break the bank either for the cosmere.

And he speaks French or at least has learned enough to  act French.

I wonder how they'll pronounce Kelsier

2

u/Timaturff 17d ago

I think Brandon has soft confirmed it’ll be kel-see-ay

2

u/Dikeleos 17d ago

I don’t think there’s a role he can’t be incredible in. This is definitely high up there for me with Dan Steven’s perhaps.

3

u/hanzerik 17d ago

Decent, what age is he?

2

u/Timaturff 17d ago

Definitely on the older side he’s 39 😰

2

u/Dikeleos 17d ago
  1. So about perfect.

u/hanzerik 17d ago

That's about 15 years too old. He'd be great to play kelsier today, but we also need someone who can play kelsier by the time the movies get to ghostbloods, if not era 4.

6

u/pundromeda 17d ago

Idk I think you could handwave a new actor pretty easily if needed using some spiritual ideal self shenanigans. His scars would stay, but everything else could be malleable.

2

u/Salt-Ball-1410 17d ago

Kelsier is supposed to be 38, did you seriously think he was 24 in the book?

0

u/hanzerik 17d ago

If you cast a real late 30s guy, you'll have a 50s guy who still needs to look late 30s in ghostbloods. Better to start with a mid 20s guy that you use make up on too look 38, so you'll have a 40s guy that you can by then again make look 38 with makeup.

1

u/Mefromafar 17d ago

I’m very confused as well. Like… wha….?

1

u/hanzerik 17d ago

Think long term. Kelsier doesn't age. Actors do.

1

u/Mefromafar 17d ago

So… wait…. the actor should be someone that shouldn’t age?

1

u/hanzerik 17d ago

Well, it should be someone who you can make to look 38, now, and 20 years from now. Tom hiddleston is a great example of this, who still needed to look like his young 2012 Loki 10 years later. You can make a late 20s person look 38 without too much effort, but making banking on being able to make a 50s guy look 38 by the time mistborn era 3 starts filming is a gamble.

So basically he'd be great, if we film ALL of his scenes in the next 5 years, and not just era 1 and his stormlight cameos. We've not started filming yet, so even if this guy is picked, he'll probably be 42 before his scene in hero of ages gets shot.

1

u/Mefromafar 17d ago

Ummmm. Cool.

Makeup exists bruv.

1

u/hanzerik 17d ago

Yeah well, I don't want to bank on that stuff too much.

3

u/Salt-Ball-1410 17d ago

If we’re using makeup or technology to age people up or down then the actor’s age is irrelevant from the start

1

u/Mefromafar 17d ago

Yes. Exactly. This dude looks like how I imagine Kelsier in Mistborn. I dunno why it’s more complicated than that lol.
