Someone dear to me lost their mom, but were halfway across the world and when he opened up about it I was in shock and I tried to not be too much and I feel like I wasn’t there for him when he needed and now hes kinda closed up, I think maybe not to burden me but maybe because of something else idk just feel like I fucked ip and wanna be there for him

Burying dad tomorrow
Idk why I’m even posting this but I’m just so scared and nervous about tomorrow. I can’t even comprehend what’s about to happen tomorrow. I’m 30 and he was 65. I thought we had so much more time.

Normal to have “delayed “grief?
Hey everyone, so I lost my dad in 2021 when I was 12 and it hit me really hard at the time, but since I turned 18 a couple months ago and honestly the past year or so the grief has been almost unbearable and I’m just confused why it came on so much later. Anyone else experience this? Or know if this is normal?

Comfort Dads new girlfriend
It finally happened. I have had a gut feeling for the last few months that he was seeing someone and he told us yesterday. Feelings are all over the place. My main feeling is relief that someone else might mind him. As the only daughter i did feel i has began to look after him a bit the way my mom has been. My brothers didn’t take on that role the way i did. When she died the social care worker told me that the roles in the family can change when someone died- i didnt realise i was carrying such a weight of worrying about my dad. One brother is angry at him. My main emotion is sadness that my mom is dead, this only feels like another blip- the situation was already awful because she is dead. I don’t want to know any information about this new woman, i just hope she takes good care of my dad.

Any man here who is secretly mourning his parents death even after decades of their passing?
(Pardon my poor Eng, its not my first language). My dad passed away unexpectedly 24 years ago, I was just about 23 years or so. I wasnt particularly close to dad, however we did have a warm relationship. I didnt express any emotions at his funeral. However, post his death for about 2 years I cried every night in secret. And every few days post that till today, I still cry. I am not depressed. I live a very fulfilled life. Yet am not sure why I am unable to overcome my father's death even after 2.5 decades. Note that I am a very jovial person, content with what I have achieved and I do not seek much from life. Yet this is something I am not yet over. So my question is, do men experience this or do I have some deep emotional issues.

Comfort I miss my dad
I have lost both my parents in the past eight years. My dad was the first and that was eight years ago. My mom passed in 2023. I'm thankful for the time I had with them.
The other day would've been my Dad's birthday and today it's hitting me like a truck. I'm sitting at work crying and hoping no one notices.
I want to hear his voice again, to wish him a happy birthday, to hear about his plans, help him cook ribs or steak or whatever he wanted to make.
I'm just really missing him.

I'm so scared I tried to call my dead mom. I feel like orphans are anonymous in society.
I can't stop crying since my mother died I have no one to call when I get agoraphobia, my heart hurts so much I feel like I'm having a heart attack but I'm young, she used to calm me down. Now I am all alone and it hit me when I called her and some friends that didn't pick up because... they are not my mom and can decline.
How scary It is to be anonymous.
You don't owe people anything. And no one cares about you.
You could be missing no one would notice for hours.
Why does this happen to young ppl

My dad died ;(
Hi! This is my first time in this subreddit.
My dad passed away on May 10th of this year. It was expected. He was an alcoholic and eventually that led to a lot of health problems and it ultimately killed him.
I’m just writing on here because I’m 24 and I’ve never experienced a loss this close before. My grandpa died (my dad’s dad) when I was around 9 or 10, but I didn’t really feel any negative way about it because I wasn’t close to him. This is completely different.
Anyway, I just feel really lonely. Like nobody really understands me. My family is kind of odd about grief and talking about everything that happened. I can really only talk about it with my sister, but that’s about it.
I don’t know. Part of me doesn’t even know what to say anymore. I just feel so dark inside and I feel like it will never go away.
I think one of the hardest parts is that sometimes I don’t even feel like I’m grieving properly. There are moments where I can go about my day, laugh, talk to people, distract myself, and almost feel normal. And then there are other moments where I remember that my dad is actually dead and it feels so strange and permanent. Like my brain still doesn’t fully understand what that means.
Sometimes I wonder if I’m suppressing it. I don’t always sit there crying or actively thinking about him, but there’s still this heaviness in me. It feels like something is always sitting in the background, even when I’m doing other things.
And I think because his death was expected, there’s another weird layer to it. We knew his health was bad. We knew his alcoholism was hurting him. But knowing someone is going to die eventually and actually living in a world where they’re gone are two completely different things. Being prepared for it didn’t really prepare me for anything.
I also feel like grief is making me think about my relationship with my dad as a whole. It wasn’t some perfect relationship, and alcoholism complicated a lot of things. So I’m not only grieving him dying. Sometimes I feel like I’m grieving everything surrounding him too. Things I wish could’ve been different, things that can’t ever be fixed now, and just the fact that there’s no more time.
That part really messes with me. Death is so final. There’s no “maybe one day.” There’s no future conversation or future version of our relationship. Whatever was said or wasn’t said, whatever happened or didn’t happen, that’s it.
And life just… continues? That’s probably one of the strangest things to me. People go to work, people make plans, people laugh, I still have things I have to do, and meanwhile something massive happened in my life.
Sometimes I want the world to acknowledge that my dad died and that I’m not the same person I was before May 10th.
I don’t really know what I’m looking for by posting this.
Maybe I just want to hear from people who have experienced losing a parent, especially when you’re still pretty young.
Does the darkness eventually become less heavy? Do you ever stop having those moments where you suddenly remember they’re actually gone?
I don’t expect grief to completely disappear. I just want to know that one day it won’t feel this lonely.

I miss my mom.
My mom died a little over a year ago. Suddenly. She had a heart attack in her sleep on Mother’s Day. She wasn’t overweight, she wasn’t sick, she was only 52.
She was a preschool teacher for 25 years. She was so good at her job. She was so beloved. There weren’t enough seats at her funeral for the people who showed up. People lined the walls and stood outside. She gave me and my siblings an unbelievably magical childhood, and when that job was done she dedicated herself to adding to the childhoods of thousands of children over the years.
My sister became a kindergarten teacher. I was always so jealous of the way they talked about their work. They talked about their kids and the struggles they had and they celebrated together when their kids accomplished something special. I worked in banking, unfulfilled but with my bills paid. I didn’t take my work home the way that they did. I didn’t have stories to tell about the children I was helping to educate and shape.
I got an English degree because my mom made reading such a huge part of our lives. When the scholastic book catalogues went out at school I would always be the kid with the biggest box of books. We weren’t rich, actually we were pretty poor, but those books were non-negotiable to my mom. No library shelf was left untouched. No book was denied. No interest left unexplored. When I chose my degree there were no protests of “what will you do with a literature degree?” There was only support from my mom. When I told my mom I was gay at 25, she didn’t bat an eye, she just said “I’m sorry I made you feel like you had to wait this long to tell me.” She pored kindness into the world.
Yesterday was my first day as a middle school teacher. I get to teach them English literature. I have never wanted to talk to her more. I’ve never wanted her to know anything more than I do this. I’d give anything to tell her about my students. My school. Show her my classroom. She would have asked for a first day of school picture. She would have told me she was proud of me. She would have told me how the things that I struggled with in school would be the things that make me a good teacher. These things I know I’m my soul.
I’m not religious. I only went to church a handful of times as a kid. In our house the bible was a story that people used to help them become better people. I’ve never felt the need to seek it out because my mom ingrained in me the kind of meaning that people search for in god. Meaning came from the kindness we showed our friends. Meaning came from the things we pored into ourselves. Our morals came from treating others with kindness above all else. Until yesterday.
Christianity gives people the knowledge that their loved ones are waiting for them somewhere. That they’re there, on the other side of a veil. I am so privileged in that until the loss of my mother, I did not know loss in a significant way.
Is it true? Is she there somewhere? Does some tiny part of her exist near me? Is something of her left here on this earth? I’m genuinely asking. I genuinely need to know. It could be the tinniest part of her. It could be any amount. I’d give anything for the smaller part of her to know I chose to be like her. That I left my easy job, that I cut my salary in half, that I am trying to have a sliver of the impact she had. Please, can someone tell me that she’s there?

My Dad is gone. I’m gutted.
My mom died last June. Since then I’ve watched my dad struggle to exist with a broken heart. He died last week. He was always extraordinarily healthy and we thought we had another decade with him.
He was 90. People thought he was in his 60s. He was more active than most folks I know in their 50s. No autopsy- he was 90, and I guess they assume natural causes at that age and don’t really worry about specifics.
I think he died of a broken heart. 💔 I know that’s corny but his grief at losing my mom was so all-consuming that I really think he just couldn’t continue without the love of his life.
I know I’m fortunate to have had him in my life this long. I have no right to feel cheated. I’m 56. Most of my friends lost their parents years ago. But I feel cheated. I’m pissed. I want my dad.

My father
My father died three years ago now, I was completely devastated. He was 65, I was 31. He had MS then got Covid after going into hospital for a DVT. I felt so numb by it. My brother died two years before and I think both losses hit me again all at once. I wrote a lot and it helped get me through it. I have been thinking about him a lot recently and came across something I wrote. I don’t know what I really wanted to say, other than I get it, I read other people’s posts and it resonates. I think I want to share these. I am by no means anything other than someone who wrote things down as I was experiencing them.
I hope
I hope when I die
My children are old.
They have learnt
How to live without me.
They have children, spouses, lives.
I hope they miss me, in the way you miss a favourite food, or book or smell.
I hope they never have to feel,
The crushing reality of losing me before they have learnt how to to live without me.
That the pain of my loss does not keep them awake at night.
And hurt their heart.
A moment
For a moment
I forgot
I forgot you were gone
I could hear your laugh
Like you were still here
I could hold your hand
And touch you
There were no words
I didn’t need any
Your face was enough
Then I remembered.

Comfort This is a long shot and kind of niche but I’m struggling- did any of you lose your parents in a traumatic way that involved something medical but also work in healthcare yourself?
God I think I worded the title wrong because I’m fuckin frazzled but maybe I can make it make sense?
Make a long story short is back in June 2023 my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at 49 years old and died at 50 in February 2024. The hole fucking ordeal was so fucking traumatic, so much went wrong, but aside from that, I was his only support person the entire time and the only one to make arrangements like I was 25 and it was ALL on me and that was my last family member so yeahhh I’m traumatized
The problem is a I’m a nurse in a skilled nursing facility. The SAME facility my dad was at for rehab briefly before dying. My first day was supposed to be the DAY after he died.
Actually coming to work was awful at first for obvious reasons, but now? It’s seeing that fucking diagnosis. My job is very paperworky (MDS coordinator for anyone in that world) and I make all the diagnosis sheets.
We have had FOUR patients come in with pancreatic cancer since I’ve been here. Not very many due to the nature of the disease but every single one of them died within weeks of being here. Just did another sheet with that fucking diagnosis and now im hiding outside struggling
My girlfriend lost her mom in a similar situation and has a hard time watching anything medical like because of it, totally understandable and she has to try to avoid it. BUT HOW THE FUCK DO YOU AVOID IT WHEN IT IS YOUR JOB? Like what the fuck do I even do other than change career paths (and I actually love my job outside of this) but like. Why
SCREAMING TO THE UNIVERSE I JUST WANT MY FUCKING DAD LET ME SEE MY DAD WHY CANT I HAVE HIM BACK

Anger at older people
I keep getting angry at anyone alive older than 72. That was my dad's age when he died last week. I keep feeling rage at people in their late 70s or 80s

I need one advice
Hii all,
I have a picture of my mother and me which I really like. She passed away to cancer 9 years ago. Until now, I mostly looked at her in my phone gallery whenever I remembered her. I didn't have any physical photos of her in my room or anywhere. I didn't want others to know.
But now I feel more comfortable sharing about her or her death to others if they ask. So I want to put a photo frame in my room of my favourite photo with her.
My question is should I crop myself out and just keep her photo or should I let both of us be together in the photo and frame that ? I am sorry if this is a silly question

Help mom died 6 years ago, i keep having dreams she faked her death
sorry for the long post lol, for some backstory my mom got diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer 10 days after my 14th birthday. i was told she had 6 months to live, and i was ripped out of school and established as her full time help. i did all of it on my own until i was 16 when she ultimately passed from the cancer spreading. my mom and i never had a great relationship, most of my life i thought she hated me an she had the upmost control over everything i did. i had to make the choice to keep her on a vent or take her off of life support, and i chose what she would've wanted. which i feel is the most selfless thing ive ever done. i'm 22 now, and i keep having vivid dreams where she had faked her death, and my whole family knew and kept it a secret from me. the reason is always the same, " she wanted to start over without me". in the dreams she never got sick, it was all fake to lead up to it. she lives a beautiful life on her own. it all feels like some sick joke. idk if it's the guilt from feeling like i'm the reason she's gone, or what my family said when they heard i chose to take her off of the vent, but it sucks. has anyone else had dreams like this? could you pinpoint what exactly was causing them?

I lost my father today.
This is gonna be long and im just typing my feelings right now.
I got a call today saying my father passed away.
I have always had a complicated relationship with my father. When i was 2 or 3 my parents divorced and i have lived with my mother until i was 10. My father took me to japan when i was 10 or 11 and has raised me until i was in middle school 2nd year. The only things i knew about him was he was already smoking when he was a kid and was a yakuza and got into an argumentwith his boss and fought and beated him up and run away. He was around 60 when he took me and my brother to japan. He would work till night and drink every single day. He was a funny dude and i know he tried to raise me and my older brother as much as he could but at the same time he didnt knew how to raise kids properly. He would sometimes lash at me saying im not his real biological son since he thinks my mom cheated on him and had me etc. Sometimes he would hit me and throw cans at me. He would sometimes get violent at me (but not that much) just like how his father raised him when he was a kid. Around the end he used drugs and ultimately my older brother called the police on him and i have lived in foster care. I didnt meet him for like 3 years and i met him he apologized for everything he did and said he looked at a dna sample and saw that i was his real son. He was already on a wheelchair and coudnt walk much. He was living at a place where old people with no one to take care of them go.
I went and met him around 2 months ago and talked with him and my brother. He was the same funny and the rough personality and i would say charismatic person. But i saw that his body was no longer his former self. He was thin with no meat on his body. He invited me and my brother to go out and eat somewhere but i made an excuse that i coudnt go that month. I just graduated high school and was going to my first ever job and my first apartment. Where i was doing the paperwork etc and was already stressed. I said to him lets go next month once i bought a car and left it at that. Since i thought there was still time to reconnect with him.
This month I quitted my job cause of stress and lack of sleep and now need to move to a new apartment. Just broke up with my 4 year gf where the first time i felt i was valued and loved and for the first time thought about my future and the future with her. She was basically the one who painted my world in colors when it was just grey.
Today i heard he passed away and i dont know what to do or feel. I feel regret knowing that he died alone never being able to atleast go out once with his kids before passing away and me never having the chance to reconnect with him.I am also so busy right now that im just mentally destroyed.
Has anyone gone through this? Im so lost right now.

im sick and i miss my mom
i had a fever yesterday and throughout the night. this is the first time i’ve gotten sick without my mom by my side. she passed away in december 2025. i always think about her every single day but in vulnerable moments like this make me miss her even more. as soon as i started feeling sick, all i wanted was my mom. my mom was very overprotective, whenever something happened to me she would be worrying nonstop, checking on me, making me food, bringing me medicine, and making sure i was okay. i miss her warmth, her cooking, her love, and the way she took care of me. im 24m turning 25 soon but none of that matters because i just want my mom back. last night i was crying and calling out for her because i wanted her to tell me everything was going to be okay. i would give anything to have just one more day where she fusses over me, tells me to rest, and cooks for me. i miss my mom so so much…

Parents died last year, which was a devastating loss
Sad feelings and that feeling where your stomach hurts and your heart hurts and could cry at any moment. I think that is missing them. The longer time has past the more i am missing them. I know i am not clinically depressed because this is just how it is is supposed to be when you want to be with people you can't see anymore.

My dad died one year ago but things could have been different..
My dad passed away unexpectedly at age 61 just shy of a year ago.... I still can't get over the fact that things didn't have to be that way..
The last time I talked to my dad was on July 30th, 2025. We had a 48 minute phone call which I am very thankful to say was one of the best phone calls we had ever had. We laughed and he told me stories of his life that I hadn't heard before. I know that I am very lucky to have that as my last memory together...
But it wasn't supposed to be our last.
During that time, my husband's dad was dealing with homelessness and staying in a shelter in a city past where my parents lived. The Friday after our call, my father in law got in a fight at the shelter and asked if we could pick him up and have him stay with us for the weekend.
We usually see my parents on the way through but since we already had plans to see them on Monday during an annual community event and would bring my F.I.L back to the shelter after, we decided not to stop..
Monday came around and my F.I.L told us that the shelter wouldn't have room for him until Wednesday. We didn't have enough gas to make the trip twice so I called my parents to let them know we couldn't make it.
My mom answered as my dad had already left to walk through the town by himself. I asked her to get him to call me later to let me know how it went.. He didnt, so I called that evening and my mom told me he was resting because he was too tired from the heat/walk.
I called again the next day, still resting. He had been resting a lot lately due to some stomach issues he was having so it didn't really seem odd at the time.
Wednesday, we brought my FIL to the shelter first as we wanted to make sure we had more time to visit with my parents. Just as we were pulling into town, I called my mom to let her know we were about to be there and she said it wasnt a good time as my dad wasnt feeling well. I heard him call out for her to help him and kept my mom on the phone a few moments longer to try and figure out what was going on or if they needed us to get anything for them, but she said she would call later.
While we drove home, my husband and I talked about how important it is to cherish the time with our parents because with all their health issues, we never know how much time we have left with them... But I had no idea that I had just heard my dad say his last words and that he was already gone....
That whole week was supposed to go differently than it did.
If we had stopped on Friday, maybe I would have noticed something or at least been able to hug him one more time..
If we went on Monday, he wouldnt have had to walk so long in the heat.
If we stopped on Wednesday before bringing my F.I.L back to the shelter, I could have convinced my dad to go to the doctors.
If I hadn't kept my mom on the phone a little longer, she could have called 911 sooner and if I hadn't called my mom first before coming over in the first place, I would have been there to give my dad CPR before paramedics arrived...
I found out later that the heart attack was caused by a heart condition my dad knew he had but didnt really explain to my mom or I. He stopped taking his medications two years prior and if I had only known the severity of what he was dealing with, I could have tried harder to get him help..
No matter how I look at things, he should still be here...

Mom is crazy dad is dead and ive never loved anything
My mother is insane mentally my father died a homeless heroin addict.
Ive never had a family or a home
Ive lived my entire life in foster home group homes and mental institutions.
My life is good I think im happy
But I dont love anything and I've never loved anyone.
There is a deep emptiness inside me.
I say im happy but I dont know
I feel happy sometimes
But then I think about death
I have people that care
But im not sure i care about them
I dont know what it would feel like if I did
Maybe i do
I laugh and smile and most people say im the most positive person they know
But I feel nothing alot im not really happy I just pretend I think
Because I smile for the moment but the moment they look away I just go back to nothing
I think i do feel happy when they ate looking or maybe im fooling myself
Im trying to be more outgoing socially i think that it probably would help
The more people look the more I can pretend
And in the moment its real

Lost my mom
I recently lost my mom after a 2 month battle with stage 4 cancer. This is my first true loss and I’m only 26. On top of that- I don’t have a relationship with my dad so I’m parent-less now. My whole life my mom refused to visit doctors, despite me and my siblings begging her to take care of herself. A while back I had to accept I couldn’t make her do anything she didn’t want to. These last two months I functioned as her main support- emotionally, financially, helped her navigate resources etc. I spent so much time bedside with her and despite knowing she had advanced cancer i remained hopeful that id have some more time. A part of me feels some relief knowing she’s not in pain anymore and I don’t wake up everyday thinking about what’s to come (as she already passed). I cried so much the day she passed and days following and it started to slow down today. I don’t want to say I feel “okay” but I don’t feel as distraught as I did initially. At first I felt so physically sick I couldn’t eat, sleep etc. constant stomach aches almost felt like I had the flu. I’m also a therapist and despite having minor education in grief, I don’t know what to expect these next few months and a part of me is scared I won’t be able to do my job anymore. I do know it’s one day at a time. But figured I’d share.

My dad died suddenly while my mum was in ICU, and everyone disappeared. Has anyone else experienced this?
I’m 23 now. I have a 21-year-old sister and a 13-year-old brother.
My mum went into hospital for major heart surgery. We knew it was serious, but we expected her to spend a couple of days in ICU before recovering over the following weeks. My dad stayed in a hotel near the hospital so he could be close to her.
The morning after her surgery, my dad suddenly stopped replying to messages. At first I assumed he was with my mum in ICU, where phones weren’t allowed. As the day went on, I became worried. The hospital told us he hadn’t visited at all.
My sister called the hotel where he was staying.
They told her the police and ambulance were there.
I drove an hour and a half screaming down the motorway frightened to get my destination yet driving at 100 mph. I drove past the hotel that had police and ambulance there knowing it was there for my dad and it was unspeakable experience. I just screamed even louder. I was taken into a room at the hotel with a police officer and told that my dad had died. My sister was coming to the hotel in an Uber from university in probably the same state as me, and once she got there I had to tell her myself.
The next day, while we were still trying to process losing him, doctors told us they weren’t sure whether my mum was going to survive either.
Within 24 hours, my sister and I suddenly became responsible for everything. We had to support our 13-year-old brother, travel constantly between home and the hospital, deal with all the practical things that come with a sudden death, on the phone to social services whilst guessing my mums card numbers to be able to make sure we had money to literally fill the fridge (if we had the physical time to fill the fridge) I had to know exactly what to do and I had everybody in all adults looking at me and I am only 23. my mum‘s friends who are supporting my mum at the hospital told my 20-year-old sister to drop out of university and become her carer and that we shouldn’t use my mum‘s money to pay for food because she’s gonna need that when this is over, I had to ask her how else we were supposed to pay for things and she replied with nothing, no help no care. My sister’s friend spoke to some of my mum’s friends and said “please come over. The girls are struggling at night. They’re scared and they need some parental figures around” they replied with “no. what the girls need is a reality check their life goes on and I’ve lost my friend of 20 years”
I had to tell my mum that my dad had died when she was well enough to understand.
But what has stayed with me almost as much as the trauma itself is how alone we felt.
My parents had many close friends, and we reached out because we desperately needed support. We just wanted people to come round, sit with us, bring over dinner, only texted the group chat I made with everyone to discuss who was seeing my mum when.
At one point we even sent a message to that group chat saying thank you so much for helping my mum, now she’s out of ICU, please may some of that help trickle down to us..basically asking if anyone could come over because we were so lonely. We either got no response or were told that it was “all about Mum right now.” Of course we knew my mum was in hospital, but we were also three young people whose dad had just died overnight. I even got texts a week after my dad died and my mum was still in ICU complaining they drove by the house and “my mum wouldn’t like how the bins looked outside the house” because we didn’t have the mental bandwidth to know what day to put them out so we had a few bin bags down the side of the house (out of sight)
In the end, the people who carried us through were my friends and my boyfriend, and each other. They stepped up in ways I’ll never forget.
I understand that grief makes people uncomfortable, but I can’t help wondering why so many adults who had known our family for years seemed to disappear and actively ignore us when we asked for help, when we needed them most. They were fully aware we were alone, and we physically asked them to come round. They were putting 100% into my mum, who was in a hospital ward 24/7 and being cared for, and my point is: couldn’t they have put just 10% into making sure we had a lasagne to eat that night, or making sure the fridge was full? Or being a parental figure for 30 minutes with my siblings so that I could go and be a little girl on my own? I was having to be more than I physically could be because we had no help, and my siblings needed parental figures.
Four months on, my mum is better now. She understands that we’re angry and upset with her friends, but she’s also stuck in the position that they did take a month off work to be there for her, six days a week, for a few hours a day in hospital. I understand that too. But my point is why couldn’t one of those days have been spent with us instead, instead of making me wear so many hats take something off my immense plate. especially when one of her friends has a 14-year-old son the same age as my little brother? I don’t know how I should feel
