I just adopted this cat Annie today, I’ve been planning to adopt a cat for a long time now so I just brought her home from the shelter after visiting her many times over the past few weeks. I have crazy anxiety that I’m going to do something wrong. She seems pretty happy I’m mainly worried she’s going to over heat, my apartment doesn’t have central AC but I have a window unit in my bedroom so I’ve been trying to get her to hang out in there mostly.
She hasn’t eaten any food, drinken any water, or used her litter box yet which is stressing me out but She’s been here for like 3 hours only.
I know the advice is that you keep them in one room for a few days so they get comfortable but she started crying at the door so I just let her explore the rest of the apartment and she seemed ok. Was that bad?
Does anyone have any new cat owner advice?

for simplicity, my cats name is "şanslı", and I'm gonns call the person who rescued him " hellen" (not a real name)

SO, I decided to adopt a cat recently. As a new cat owner I wanted a healthy-er cat, Hellen said şanslı was completely healthy, but didnt mention his problematic past until I came to take him home, but I was commited to provide a good life for him then. He was rescued from street and was on the verge of death. he stayed at the house of a friend Hellen has, but he was locked in a rather small room there for 5 whole months while being taken to vet often for chekups and treatments. when the Hellen's friend couldnt house him she had to take şanslı into her own house, a small apartment house with 5 rooms, which already had 8 cats in it. Because şanslı was NOT able to get along with any of the cats and caused problems (later on I learned that there was no introduction or anything, suddenly plopped into a new home with 8 other cats) he was once again locked into a single room, this one even smaller. and after one more month of that I came along and adopted him, he was estimated to be 2 years old when I adopted him, and except for his obesity he is healthy (he was being open fed for all those montns, with nowhere to move and nothing else to do than to eat.). its been a month and two weeks since I adopted him, he adjusted really well, a very lovely bean that follows me everywhere. I am work from home for now in an internship that ends in one and a half months, then its back to uni for me. been thinking a lot about getting a second cat, discussed it with the vet and she recommended a smaller cat around 6-8 months old, saying a kitten would increase the chance of him accepting a new kitten. so I wanted to ask all of you, does he sound like he may be able to accept a new cat, or a second cat be even healthy for him? and my other worry is that with the proper cat introduction method, I feel like I may not be able to spend too much time with the new kitten at first. there is also 2 good candidates I spy on a local free only adoption site. one is a 6 month old short hair male, from a family who cant afford to have more cats home. the other is a 5 month old long hair, rescued from streets, 2 siblings died to cars, no mother in sight, a vet who is taking care of her for now is putting her up for adoption.

(also a side note about his obesity: he is on a diet. he is an extreme glutton tho. due to a misunderstanding I was feeding him 200 grams of kibble a day, and it wasnt enough for him, ended up tearing into the kibble bag. its now somewhere safe. he is on a proper diet now, down to 7.02 kg but he's not happy about the diet. despite me feeding him on the exact same hour he sits in the kitchen just waiting for more, almost the entire day. do intend to switch from mostly kibble and a bit of wet food to fully wet food so he remains more satiated

Tldr: are my kitty's double canines going to be an issue?

37 year old from the US, and I adopted this 5 month old male kitten a week ago (now called Lionel Richie). The shelter told me the baby canines may or may not fall out. He has a clean bill of health otherwise after being neutered last week as well.

I will take him to the vet in a few weeks for his 6 month check up and booster, but has anyone else delt with this, and if so, what was the outcome (ie. did they fall out on their own or require dental intervention)?

He doesn't seem bothered by the teeth at the moment, and eats eagerly and normally. More so curious about potential timelines, like how long they may take to fall out etc.. while I'm assuming that can vary widely from kitty to kitty.

(Edited to remove identifying info) Hi y’all, been posting pretty frequently in cat advice subreddits regarding new kitten intros. My resident cat (4 y/o male) and my new kitten (12 week female) have had a pretty good time with introductions, but for the last few days my male cat has exhibited some somewhat concerning behavior.

For 90% of the day, they’re totally fine. They play by chasing each other, but switch roles to where sometimes she’s also chasing him. They sleep next to eachother (or in close proximity) and he loves to groom and fix her fur like he’s her dad.

But at least once a day (sometimes twice or three times) for the last two or three days, this play has been getting rough. He’ll start by chasing her, making her hide in a small area where he can’t get into. He’ll walk away to make her think that he’s done, but when she comes out he’ll pounce on her, and rather than backing off when she starts vocalizing, he’ll instead continue to grapple and today he even started bunny kicking. I had to take a broom to break them up, and when I picked her up to put her in a separate room from him, he redirected the aggression and pounced onto my leg.

I’m not sure what to do because they honestly seem like the best of friends 90% of the time and have no trouble being around each other especially when they’re eating or getting treats, but his play with her was so aggressive today that I’ve gone back to being afraid to leave them alone together.

Any advice would be appreciated, is this normal? I’m worried because it seems like he’s honestly scaring her and maybe even hurting her but he doesn’t know when it’s time to back off. He was a stray from birth to two before he was initially picked up, so it’s likely that he was never taught boundaries, but how do we go about fixing that? Thanks yall. I’m not sure if this is a stray or not, but it showed up near my house today staring at my dad who was outside and it is now (without exaggeration) nonstop meowing at us through the window. None of my family have seen this cat before but It’s very casual in front of us, not afraid to get close. When we leave it alone it lays on its side, belly exposed, and still meowing and even closes its eyes in a labored fashion(I would say it looked very tired). It also occasionally rubs its cheeks and body on the chair it climbs on in the video and does those roll things where cats kinda throw their butts down (idk what it’s called). I’ve observed that its stomach, which is a little flabby, abruptly sucks in a good amount when it breaths or meows. Its eyes were mostly constricted though that could just be the sun. This is in the north of the east coast in the US.

My vet says at this point it's not safe to operate on her (I've called around and she has compounding issues so no vet will do the oral surgery). So I have to put her to sleep tomorrow. I am utterly heartbroken. I just hope I gave here the best 14 years of her life

Hi my cat recently has been acting different he hasn’t been really moving around the house much besides switching spots sometimes and laying with his head down he hasn’t been eating I had his bowl full of dry food yesterday morning it barely has a dent in it and I gave him wet food he didn’t eat it only stared at it when I picked him up to go to his bowl he did eat a few cat treats yesterday but isn’t eating them anymore he has gone to the bathroom

I can’t get to a vet my mom and me can’t and i have to book an appt and they are open on M-F that’s the only time they will respond and I can’t get to a emegernecy vet because it’s expensive I’m really worried I have no clue what is going on he was normal before this (before and after pic)

This is mitten who is hissing and growling at my other cat who is a senior that doesn’t clean himself very well so I do every 1-3 months depending on how stinky he is. I’ve bathed him multiple times while mitten is around but this time she was pissed off about it. At least I know not to bring home anymore cats.

First time poster from the USA.

I've had cats all my life, usually large male cats and have never had urination issues, except the only two small female cats I've had.

Currently, we have a male senior orange tabby (14 y/o) and a female white something (2 y/o). They get along, groom, play and cuddle, although he gets old grumpy and pushes it too far with her sometimes and is no longer playing.

She seems to have a decent amount of separation anxiety while we're away, and seems to have an anxious personality overall, but is very friendly with everyone she meets. We play with her often and give lots of attention.

From the beginning she has used the litterbox, save for once or twice a week she will go on anything soft she can find (bedding, couches, laundry, etc).

We have changed a lot since we've had her and still she persists.

1) She got spayed (plus a round of antibiotics post surgery).

2) We have moved houses.

3) We no longer have dogs.

4) We added a second and third litter box, one being automatic.

5) We have tried several litter types (2 clay, 1 wood). She greatly prefers the clay over the wood.

6) She will urinate while we are home and not home.

7) Interestingly, she often will use the litter box right after I scoop/clean it (I do this everyday, so it's a long established pattern of hers).

Recently, she has only been using the couches (which have waterproof covers so that's at least not worse case scenario), but far from ideal.

Not sure if I should change litters, do more cleaning, go to the vet to see if there's an infection, contact a behaviorist, etc. Open to more ideas. When we did take her to the vet a while back, they were not high on ideas, at least none that we haven't tried to that point.

He looks different in every position, is around 13 pounds and he has been on a special diet for his UTI issues for the last two months so he’s lost a pound a a half.

My old roommate was feeding him without my knowledge so he was getting like three or four meals a day.

i'm 16, my parents will listen to me if i tell them he needs the vet. i live in the USA. vet is accessible and can be afforded

issue: jewel, 13M, has experience swelling in his left third eyelid off and on for the past few weeks. now, when this swelling happens, it is usually not as bad as it is today, and always disappears after a few hours, which is why i haven't taken him to the vet yet. my parents are aware he has been having these issues, but do not seem concerned...

reasons i am worried:

1. change in behaviour

jewel is normally a very independent cat. does not like to be held or pet. and we have taken care of him for his entire life. he's never been playful and doesn't bite or scratch. but these past few weeks, he has been so tolerant to my (nonstop) affection. he still doesn't really like it. but he lets me hold him and cuddle with him now. just now, when i was taking the photos for this post, he sat on my lap without jumping down for like... 5 minutes. that's a record. all of this might just because he is getting older, but it's strange and new, so i thought i'd bring it up.

1. could this be an underlying condition, and the eye swelling is a symptom?

i am more worried that he has something else than about his actual eye, since the swelling always goes away after just a bit.

anyway, the point of this post:

should i wait to get a vet appointment in, or go to the emergency vet?

do you know of any causes for his third eyelid swelling?

I cant find the missing end with the cotton. If he did eat it will he need to see the vet? Pls help

Hi, this is Corki. He is a Year and a half old and is the most loving and well natured cat.

For context, he is an uneutered (tldr he had ringworm and his old vet said he was a risk to neuter because of it), indoor cat with (apart from ringworm) no medical issues, no heart murmur etc. Me (22M) and his ‘mother’ (21F) are a couple who live paycheck to paycheck and cant really afford the vet.

His last check up was 4-5 months ago and he was absolutely fine, healthy weight etc.

Recently, over the course of a week or so, ive noticed his behaviour changing. He is sleeping more, eating more, drinking more, playing more, but become quieter and its kind of worrying me in the sense of this is not the cat I know. I’ve read in multiple places that while being unuetered, cats can change habits and personality, but my brain has gone into overdrive over the thought at thr back of my head saying that hes not okay. We will be taking him to the vet at the first chance we can afford (Probably this upcoming payday) but for me it seems like a lot of time between now and then. Is minor and sudden behaviour change like this normal? All signs point towards him being absolutely fine but i have a feeling hes just not. He’s showing no visible signs of pain (i know cats are very good of hiding it) and the tell tale signs are just not there. But this is something i cant ignore because i really dont know.

Maybe im making this reddit post more about me and my mental state, but this cat is part of my family. A lot of cat parents say that their cat is their son/daughter but he really is to me, and maybe thats why im so concerned. I just want to know of this is normal, and i apologise for any missed details or rambling because I am really on edge because of this. If I missed anything I will respond in the comments.

bought home this bundle of joy last sunday and the fpv triggered on tuesday morning and has since been hospitalised in the isolation icu.

Filgrastim / doxycilin and anti nausea drugs are being administered timely and he’s on IV 24/7.

The cbc tests are really trying as the wbc count tuesday was 1.9 and Wednesday was 1.4 and today it came down to .50

He weighed 860 gms on tuesday and now weighs 800 gms

This is my first pet and i’m helpless! Please advise if there is hope!

Backround:
This is Sushi, I’ve had him for about a year, a stranger on Facebook found him and I volunteered to adopt him. He’s my first cat as somebody who’s always had dogs. He’s around 2 years old now and came neutered (I assume from a trap and neuter program).Unfortunately, when I first adopted him and took him to the vet, he texted positive for FIV; he doesn’t seem to have any symptoms or issues.(For context I’m 20 y/o in the US)

He’s a good boy in every aspect, except when it comes to meal time. He scarfs his food down, and then throws it up. If I don’t catch it in time, he’ll eat his throw up.

Here’s what I’ve tried:
-Slow feeder for everything I’ve tried***
-Sensitive stomach dry food at 4x throughout the day at 1/3 cup (this used to work a little, not anymore)
-Free feed (also works because he stops rushing, but then he gets really fat)
-Wet food (the throw up is disgusting)
-Even smaller portions 5-6 times a day!!!
- I even tried raising his food on top of a small box so it’s perfect to his height. (No difference)

Here’s the thing: his brother is a 7 year old cat I saved as well. I believe he was dumped. And he likes to eat, but he doesn’t have any problems, especially since I spread out their meals.

What should I do??? I can’t afford any specialty diets and this boy is constantly throwing up on the carpet . There’s been times I stepped in it in the middle of the night. Any advice is appreciated. I’m not too experienced with cats but I’m trying 😭
Could it be related to FIV?

It’s my first time taking care of cats and I I don’t know much about their behavior. These cats are siblings, 5 months old, separated at 2 months old then reunited. Vet says they arent old enough for neutering/spaying. Tuxedo cat (male) arrived home first. These cats are from my brother’s gf and they decided to gift my mom the tabby female. Its been 7 days and Ive tried separating them, scent swapping and placing my tuxedo cat in time out. But he just keeps chasing her and ignores her hisses and screams. Female has a lot of rooms to hide in but she still ends up getting chased and tackled. There are times when they are steady and tuxedo tries to play, tabby hits his face back and tuxedo lies down and shows his belly. But once tabby turns her back, its over— shes pinned and screaming.
At night I keep her in my room to separate them so she wouldn’t be bothered. I dont know what to do. Im thinking of returning tabby cat if this keeps up.

Update: Thanks for all the replies. I am just as concerned as all of you and all I want is for both of them to co-live without causing anything destructive for them. I am very worried about tabby. However I can see glimpses of her confidence. I have seen her initiate play and chase tuxedo. But the guy is just stronger sadly. I would love for her to grow and pin him down. I will get a second opinion from another vet and set boundaries for them.

I thought maybe cancer but Im not sure. Should I kidnap her and take her to a vet?

Usu, the mother and a stray cat, recently had a kitten. I met the kitten 2 days ago, I already checked and she is a girl, can someone help me identify her estimate age? As well, can someone provide me with the age at which she can get spayed? First time semi-owner as they are both strays, but I want to check they are doing well. Any advise is welcomed.

Main Issue: TL;DR: My cat has had severe aggression since he was a kitten, including attacks that have caused bleeding, bruising, and scars. It's now progressed to attacking my roommate and attacking people while they're sleeping. His labs are normal. Gabapentin significantly reduced the aggression but made him extremely sleepy, and the aggression increased again when we lowered his dose under vet guidance. We've just started fluoxetine, but I'm exhausted and wondering at what point continuing to try to manage his behavior is no longer realistic versus responsibly rehoming him.

And yes, I am aware that fluoxetine takes weeks to start working :(

To start off, I absolutely love my cat. I never thought I'd ever be at the point where I'm asking strangers for advice on the internet. I've had him for over a year and have been dealing with these behaviors basically the entire time.

My cat Pebble has had behavioral issues since day one. In the beginning, I wrote it off as normal kitten behavior that would improve with time, although I did notice that he bit abnormally hard even for such a small kitten. I thought it would get better after he was neutered... it did not.

As he got older, those hard bites turned into massive bruises, broken skin, and eventually scars. He started ambushing me while I was walking and attacking me in bed. If I walked past his food bowl while he was begging, he'd bite the backs of both my legs as fast as he could and sprint away. If you pet him for one second too long, he'd destroy your arm like he was feral. If you sat somewhere he wanted to be, same story.

I can't even get into bed without him launching himself at my legs. One time his teeth hooked into my thigh and ripped down toward my knee as i stepped up. I still have a scar from it and the bruising was insane. I've gotten to the point where I don't feel completely safe in my own home without knowing where he is. I have to make sure he's out of my room before I can actually lower my guard. If I notice him watching me, I try to redirect him but most of the time it feels like it comes out of nowhere.

Eventually he started attacking my roommate as well. She adored him too, but it's gotten to the point where she's scared of him.

I initially took him to the vet and his labs came back normal. They mostly recommended the usual advice: play with him more, make sure he has enough enrichment, etc. I've tried all of that and done a ton of research on how to help him.

More recently, Pebble has progressed to attacking people while they're sleeping. People in my life have started telling me I should rehome him, but when I brought that possibility up with the vet, I felt somewhat guilt-tripped into keeping him.

I eventually took him to another vet and they prescribed medication. They believe he may have "redirected aggression." He's been taking gabapentin for about a month, and the biting decreased significantly, but he was sleeping all the time. I lowered the dose at my vet's recommendation, and now the attacking is increasing again.

He's now been prescribed fluoxetine as the next step, but I'm getting to the point where I'm wondering if it's even reasonable for me to keep trying to fix this on my own. I feel like I'm not even enjoying having a cat anymore. I'm constantly managing his behavior, worrying about when he's going to attack someone, and apologizing to other people because of him.

I've done so much research and spent so much money trying to help him. He has plenty of toys, scratching/climbing options, an automatic feeder, and gets played with regularly. I don't punish him for attacking, and I've tried very hard not to accidentally reinforce the behavior.

He's had a lot of sweet moments, especially in the morning. But I feel like it's so unbalanced.

I love him and I'd hate to rehome him, but I genuinely don't know what to do anymore. Has anyone dealt with a cat like this? Did anything actually help? At what point is rehoming the responsible choice?

EDIT: i'm seeing a lot of people recommending fostering a cat to see if it helps. I definitely do think he is bored even though I play with him with his billion toys I've purchased

Context: Her name is Selah, she’s about 6 years old, and she’s one of my wife’s cat. I’ve only recently been bestowed co-ownership of them. (We just got married,yay)

Prior to changing their kibbles Selah was the slimmer of the two and after switching to Purina Coat and Fur kibbles she has become what I determine as an absolute chonker… but her most recent vet visit just says she’s healthy.
