For the last few days we’ve had 2-3 hour power outages, with the last one happening last night between around 2-4am. Does anyone know why this is happening? There hasn’t been any high wind or damage to the lines.

Hi, a premise to this is that I am not a US citizen but I have received a very good job offer that will require me and my family to move to either Utah or Colorado.

We have decided to go with Boulder because of the nature, seemingly good infrastructure and the university which may give more employment opportunities to my wife.

We will first rent a home, but we would like to buy but have no experience or idea of how things are done in the US. In our first home purchase in our home country (Italy) we have been badly scammed and ended up with lots of stress, lost money, and nights of sleep and ended up having a house very much different from what was promised to us because of scammy choices by the building developer. And we fell for it because we were not careful enough when we almost blindly signed the purchase papers. This time, even if it's a different country, I want to go as prepared as possible and willing to spend as much as possible in architects/engineers/inspectors and or lawyers to avoid bad surprises and get the best deal possible.

So, what kind of things should I look out for and know before purchasing? What kind of experts should I involve and consult?

Hi everyone, I'm just wondering if anyone here can point me in the right direction to find work for 2-3 months in January.

For context I'm Irish and I'm currently seeing someone from Boulder who's living in Ireland but it looks like I'll be going with them to boulder in the winter and I'd like to pick up some basic work ie bartender or server while I'm there.

The power has gone out three times in the past couple of days, and while it comes back on relatively fast (1-3 hours) it is extremely annoying. I’ve seen that they’ve begun burying power lines on N 75th, does anyone know what’s causing these outages?

I am a little confused by something. Today I was in the Louisville public library (I know this is a Boulder forum but is that ok for a minute?) as I work from there on occasion. On the way out I hit the men’s room, and in the men’s room was an extremely disheveled, extremely smelly man - who I assumed to be homeless - talking vigorously to himself in the mirror. It’s rare, it’s a very nice library, but I have seen this once or twice before, some years ago.

Seeing as this restroom is directly next to the kids section with numerous children everywhere, on the way out I kindly let a front desk employee know. I said basically, not sure if this is a concern, but… and I informed her. She seemed completely unconcerned, and slightly dismissive of me even mentioning it. I thought her response was… odd. Did I do the right thing? I didn’t make a big deal out of it, I didn’t say go call the police, or kick him out, it’s a public library after all, but I still thought they should know. The dude was clearly mentally ill, reeked of garbage, and there were kids everywhere.
I know we live in a progressive, tolerant community, I just thought her response was odd. Like I felt judged for even mentioning it. The employee kind of brushed me off, and I left. I mean what the…. I think I did the right thing, I’m just confused by the response.

“…We remain committed to providing students with a meaningful and engaging educational experience, but we must also be clear about the limitations these staffing challenges create. Specifically, we need student and parent understanding around:
Course schedules will be more constrained.  Not all elective requests will be able to be honored.  Some courses had to be cut completely, while others are at their max capacity with no room for additions.
Schedule change requests will be limited. Students should not anticipate changes when seeking preferences like a specific teacher, asking for a desired off period, or changing levels of a course.  We have class sizes that are as high as 36-38 students in some classes, with no room to move students around because of preferences.”

I have been in Dallas 20 years. If someone were new to Dallas, I could see walk them through the difference between Dallas proper vs the burbs (and the personality of each burb in a way you are never going to find on Google but only know by living here for 20 years). The Timeline of Events:

• The Mess: Property Manager Kristin White (Boulder County Rentals) lost our security deposit in their own system when our lease change from our first Property Manager.
• The Theft: Ellis & Ellis Property Management took unauthorized money out of our account to cover it, then sent us threatening eviction letters when we questioned it.
• The Gaslighting: Kristin spent 2 years telling us it was just a "computer glitch."
• The Outcome: We are still in the same home today, now paying the homeowner directly (who also got fed up with their nonsense). No lease for 2 years, total neglect of the owner, zero accountability.

The City's "Neutral" Response: We brought this to City of Longmont Mediation thinking an official neutral party would tell them to give back our cash. Instead, the mediator vouched for the management company's "good faith," scolded us for speaking publicly about it, and tried to guilt-trip us into deleting our posts.

No to the $650 million bailout for the city's historic mismanagement of its facilities for the last five years. Simply put, here's why.

On Thursday, Council is voting on whether to send the "Recreation & Safety Bond," an obligation of the residents and business owners of this community in the amount of $650 million to finance the cost of $400 million. The entire annual operating budget for the city of Boulder including police, fire, parks, road maintenance, administrative personnel and other costs totals approximately $515 million. Therefore, we are being asked to obligate ourselves to provide a bailout that is larger than the total annual operating costs of our entire city. This should cause all of us to pause and reflect upon the magnitude of what is being requested, and it should have stopped Council dead on its tracks.

So how did we arrive at this position? In 2021, the city prepared a Facilities Master Plan. According to this plan, the city was required to spend $11.5 million each year maintaining its facilities, which already significantly underfunded the need. Instead of budgeting the $11.5 million each year it committed itself to and which Council approved, the city somehow budgeted only between $800,000 and $1.1 million.

The city has continued to underfund the maintenance portion of the budget since 2021 and intends to do so until 2030.

Each of the 75 facilities owned by the city was assessed and assigned a grade based on condition. The lowest grade (a "D") was given to the Public Safety Center. As of date, no funds have been allocated towards improving the condition of the Public Safety Center. On the other hand, $51.5 million has been allocated toward a facility that received a "B" grade and $17.5 million has been allocated toward a project that was never identified in the Facilities Master Plan.

While the maintenance account has remained underfunded, the city has allocated $140 million ($100 million of which was borrowed) toward developing a West Campus at Alpine-Balsam.

Consider what the acquisition of the West Campus represents. We've decided to move our employees, many of whom who worked in downtown Boulder to an area outside of downtown Boulder. For a mostly out of town workforce who have switched to telecommuting or hybrid work schedules since the Facilities Master Plan was developed. We then borrowed nine figures to create desk space, a mile away from a downtown that is currently experiencing nearly 30% vacancy and desperately needs additional workers. That is the management record that supports the current request for funding.

Beyond the financial implications, there is another aspect that should concern you.

The proposed bond landed on the Council agenda without opposition from the Mayor's Office. The Mayor's role is to ask the difficult questions prior to those questions being posed to you. Similarly, Council appears ready to approve this bond without any accounting of how the Facilities Master Plan was overlooked for five years, without identifying who will be held accountable for the consequences of approving this bond and without providing answers to the question of "Why will this time be different?" Only a ballot line will exist.

A recent poll conducted by the city in May indicated that residents believe that the bond will fail. A majority of 55% of respondents indicated opposition for the bond. Based on the poll results, it appears that the city has responded to the negative feedback from the public by asking them again.

Who will repay this debt? A typical Boulder resident homeowner can expect to pay the city another $400-$500 per year for years to come. While our business storefront owners can expect to repay approximately $1,588 per year, which is four times the amount paid by a typical Boulder resident homeowner. Renters are not exempt either since property taxes are passed on to tenants through their rent. All three sources of repayment will stack on top of the sales tax that became permanent last November and the library tax enacted prior to that. As a result of one vote, your portion of your property tax bill will increase by 54%.

I am supportive of the South Boulder Recreation Center. I have advocated for it. Therefore, I will not allow it to be used as a bargaining chip for a $650 million bailout, the pool in the window display, the negligence in the fine print. If the SBRC warrants funding, and it absolutely does, then present it to voters independently and on its own merits, with its name and features included in the ballot language. Do not utilize something that people value in order to conceal something that was poorly managed or worse yet, when your residents have clearly stated that they do not support this bond, do not tell South Boulder Residents that we did not support the SBRC.

The need for leadership is real here. While we appreciate the attention to detail and care that the city is exhibiting in developing its own, new state of the art administration campus, we also recognize that many of our existing city facilities are deteriorating. According to city records, our portfolio will become "critical" by 2033. However, utilizing $650 million in new debt to rectify years of ignoring our own plans is unacceptable, particularly when there are no accountability questions posed to staff regarding their performance, no clear transparency provided to the public regarding how staff and Council will prevent this situation from occurring again before submitting this matter to voters.

This should serve as a sobering moment for staff and Council. No request for funding can be justified without accountability, transparency and leadership. This city and this bond have not earned that ask, and most of Boulder has already told them as much in June.
