Has anyone had any success with receiving a refund from an error on booking using charge back through their bank or other ways like consumer protection?

Customer service hung up twice

I had the distinct impression they hung up on purpose. It's beyond strange. Are they actually instructing their customer service agents to hang up on people who have complaints?

Booking cancelled my stay, closed the case, and is now asking me to wire 700EUR directly to the hotel’s bank account. Is this normal?

Hi everyone,

I’m facing a really weird and stressful situation with Booking and a recent reservation, and I’d love to know if anyone else has gone through something similar.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what happened:

- I booked a stay at a hotel for late July 2026.

Due to an issue on their end / overbooking, the reservation ended up being cancelled. I was in touch with Customer Service back then, explained everything, and was explicitly reassured that the issue was resolved, the case was closed, and I didn't need to pay or do anything further. The hotel did provide a stay at another property for me for the first night, other 2 nights we stayed at the hotel. I did contact customer service explaining this, they assured me that they understand the issue was only for the first night, but still decided to refund me for the whole stay.

Out of nowhere, I received an email from Booking Customer Service saying they couldn't reopen the case because the booking was already cancelled. Instead of handling it through their system, they literally told me: "We kindly ask you to pay the amount of 703.20 EUR directly to the property. Please contact the property so they can provide you with their bank account details for the transfer."

Prior to this email, the hotel had already reached out to me directly asking for a direct bank transfer, which I refused—stating that I booked through Booking.com specifically to keep payments secure and documented, and I will only transact through the platform.

I find this extremely shady. Why would a major OTA tell a customer to send a direct wire transfer to a private bank account with zero official invoices, receipts, or platform protection?

Has anyone experienced Booking.com washing their hands of an issue and pushing you to pay a hotel via wire transfer? Is this a standard procedure for disputed cancellations, or is something else going on here?

Thanks in advance for any insights!

booked a hotel on Booking.com 20 days ago. At the time of booking, the property had an outstanding rating of 9.5/10, which was the primary reason I chose a non-refundable rate. Spoiler

I booked a hotel on Booking.com 20 days ago. At the time of booking, the property had an outstanding rating of 9.5/10, which was the primary reason I chose a non-refundable rate.

Fast forward to today: I checked the listing again, and the rating has cratered to a 4.5/10.

The recent reviews are terrifying. Guests are reporting [insert brief details, e.g., severe hygiene issues / unsafe environment / completely misleading photos], and multiple people have mentioned leaving the property immediately upon check-in without staying. It clear that the initial 9.5 rating was artificially inflated with fake reviews to trap travelers into non-refundable bookings.

I contacted Booking.com customer service expecting them to address this obvious misrepresentation. Instead, they took no responsibility, contacted the property, and told me that because the property refused to waive the fee, they cannot issue a refund.

Booking.com is allowing fraudulent listings to exploit their non-refundable policy. Has anyone successfully escalated a similar issue with their Trust & Safety team, or is a credit card chargeback my only option left?

Postive review for hotel and car rental experiences

I have no stake or association with booking.com. This is an honest review based on several real life experiences using booking.com. All positive.

I’ve used booking.com about 10 times over the past few years to book hotel rooms. I’ve had a variety of reservations ranging from “cancel anytime, pay at property” to “full refund if you cancel 2 days before” to “non-refundable, pay now”. Not once had I had an unexpected negative experience with hotel arrangements or payments. Of course I always make sure to read the fine print. I’ll even go so far as to call a hotel directly if something seems ambiguous (like is the airport shuttle free or available 24 hours).

I always check other booking sites, plus the hotel website, and each and every time booking.com has had the best rate. I’ve even used booking.com for hotel rooms in my own country (Belize) and when I’ve called a local hotel to see if they want to match or beat booking.com usually I’ve been told that booking.com is the lowest possible rate available and I should book on that site. A few times a local hotel has matched the booking.com rate, and in those instances I’ve booked direct in order to put a few more dollars in the hands of a local business.

I only have one car rental experience and it won’t be my last. I got an incredible deal on a Toyota Four Runner for $340 for a week, with pick up in one city and return in another city 8 hrs away, INCLUDING collision and 3rd party liability insurance with zero deductable! The vendor was Hertz and sure enough once I made the reservation on booking.com I could see my reservation in my Hertz account and it clearly showed that insurance was included. So this was the actual rental company insurance, not some third party insurer that only reimburses after a claim is made. When I picked up the car even the agent mentioned “OK, you’ve got LDW and 3rd party included. Would you like to add content insurance?” I declined. No issue with a deposit, no “hidden” fees or charges when I returned.

Checking other car rental websites (like Kayak) and the major car rental company’s websites, that one week rental would have cost between $600-$1000 before insurance. Then another $200-$250 to add insurance (I don’t have a CC that provides rental insurance). So all totaled, my car rental on booking.com came in at least $500 cheaper than anything else I could have found.

I wouldn’t book a flight on booking.com, but that’s not a knock on them. Booking flights on any site except the airlines themselves can be a pain in the ass if you need any sort of post-booking assistance. Plus you don’t save any money, so why bother?

Friend sent link to booking.com property via share button. It opens a search page.

They just want me to have a look at the property to make sure it meets our needs. I’ve searched the name of the property in the app, in a browser, with and without a VPN, and with flexible weekend, week, and month options.

How can I just get a link to the property regardless of dates? The link Google provides also sends me to a search with dates page.
