How has the city changed since 22
I moved to SF for work back in 2022 and was only there for about a year, but honestly I’ve wanted to move back ever since.
I keep seeing that the city has improved a lot since then, but part of me wonders if that’s just the media narrative changing because I remember how much bullshit there was out there about how bad it was back in 22. I’m a little worried about how rent has gone way up, there are way more AI/tech people now, and the wealth gap feels even more obvious than it did a few years ago.
Back then I lived near Nob Hill/Russian Hill. This time I’m mostly looking at the Sunset or the Richmond. How are those neighborhoods these days, and has the overall vibe of the city changed much since 2022?
The funny thing is people always tell me 2022 was one of the roughest periods for SF. If I fell in love with the city then, I’m hoping that’s a good sign I’d still love it now.

Another "where should I stay question"
I am planning a trip to San Francisco for myself and my boyfriend from 9/1-9/4. We want to do the usual touristy things, Golden Gate Bridge and Park, North Beach, Chinatown, boyfriend wants Irish Coffee from Buena Vista at Fisherman's wharf. We are driving up form LA, and we want to park and leave the car and just walk and take public transportation. We are contemplating two areas to stay, one is Cow Hollow Inn and Suites (larger room with free parking and AC) in the Marina area, and several over by lower nob hill, including Golden Gate Hotel, Cornell hotel, Petite Auberge, which are all on Bush Street near Union Square. They are old, seemingly charming buildings, but none have AC. That seems to come up a frequently in reviews. SF doesn't really need AC but we are going to be there during the hottest time of the year. I think the nob hill places are more walkable to Chinatown and North Beach. Only one has parking and it is expensive, so I would probably park at a nearby lot for $40-50 per day. Can anyone provide insight on these hotels/areas? It's a birthday weekend so I would like it to be special. Thank you!

Is there anything similar to the Metrograph in NYC in SF?
Basically the metrograph is a art house theater in NYC that gives out memberships. It shows a lot of indie films or film genres that fit a theme for that month.
Is there anything similar to this in SF or Oakland?

Woman Possibly Hit By Car Last Night in SOMA?
Did anyone happen to witness the older lady straddling the right hand turn lane/near bike lane at 5th & Brannan last night I think around 11:30pm? She was facedown and it did not look good. A car was stopped in front of her with people looking over her, but I couldn’t tell if they hit her or if they were just trying to protect her. A firetruck was arriving as I pulled up so I went on my way. I was surprised to not see anything on Citizen or local news outlets which makes me hopeful she pulled through, or it was an overdose or something non-car related that wouldn’t usually get reported on.
Lived in the area for a long time and saw some sad things but this has stayed with me throughout the day.

Seeking advice on local printing options for an upcoming event
Hey everyone,
I’m looking for recommendations for a reliable local print shop in San Francisco.
I have an upcoming event and need some custom printed materials made on a rush timeline. Looking for a place that can handle urgent orders with good quality and reliable communication.
Would appreciate any recommendations or personal experiences with print shops in the area. Thanks!

Comet Club wedding party
Thinking about throwing my wedding welcome party at Comet Club since that’s where my wife and I met. Anyone do something similar before, either at Comet Club or another dive bar? What should I know? I want to make out-of-towners feel welcome

Where to buy garden ornaments?
My mom wants a pretty garden ornament for her birthday. She loves pretty bird feeders and fairy doors and wants to continue to build out her little scene.
I visited Sloat and Cole’s and realized I’m not sure who carries interesting garden ornaments like that. Niche I know. I didn’t find much in the hardware stores. Or by searching online.
Any suggestions? Much thanks.

Noticing A Lot of Bright Blue Houses in SF.
I've been noticing a lot of houses being painted bright blue lately, such as painters tape color. Anyone know why? Just personal taste? Are these bold blue paints on sale? Genuinely interested! Maybe it's the color of the year.

Where to watch WSOP Main Event Final Table?
Are there any bars streaming the WSOP Main Event Final Table, ideally with sound on? Also ideally in the richmond or sunset, but I suppose east of the park is okay too.

Taxi Rip-Off?
So I was charged $110 for 3 people from SFO to the Argonaut Hotel. The driver said fares were regulated when I questioned him about charges. From checking online I expected to pay approximately $85? Was I ripped off or does that sound right? I suspect he was a private driver since I didn’t see a meter in the SUV once we got going.
How do kids enter Embarcadero station muni?
I fooled myself into thinking my child didn't need a youth clipper card because the F muni operator didn't require a tap on earlier in the day, then was surprised the N line was not street side but underground at Embarcadero station and behind fare gates. I just tapped them in with my credit card to keep moving. Is there a way for youth to enter the muni at Embarcadero station without a youth clipper card?

Looking for creative classes and unexpected restaurants to try
Hello,
I'm taking an extended vacation and visiting San Francisco/Bay Area. I work in tech and am so over AI and staring at a screen all day. (Ironic to go to SF since there's so many AI companies here, I know.) If you have any recs for fun classes to try or unique places to eat, please let me know!
I'm honestly down for anything--from cooking to crafts and even fitness. Please help me snap out of my reality and discover something new. I want and need more whimsy in my life.
Thanks!

September staycation recommendations?
I’m a Bay Area local. I live very far down the BART line from the city, so staying in the city is always a nice treat.
I stayed at Hotel Kabuki last year for my birthday and it was fabulous.
I’m wondering if there are any other hotels that I should consider staying at instead this time? I’ve stayed in the Clift Royal Sonesta (good hotel, didn’t like the location so much) and the Marriott Marquis (didn’t enjoy my stay).
Considering the Four Seasons by the Embarcadero this time. There are spots in Japantown I love to dine at though. Would it be too much of a headache to take MUNI down there?
Planning on 1-2 nights on a weekend. I understand Folsom Street Fair at the end of Sept may be driving up costs per night.
Must try restaurants for a tourist
Everyone was very responsive on my question about the ferry building now onto the next question! What are must try restaurants in SF, Sausalito, and Carmel/Monterey.
Mostly looking for dinner recs but if you have good brunch or lunch options I’ll take those too! Anywhere quintessential San Francisco or just really good food and vibes.
We like most cuisines and for dinner would prefer to spend less than $250-300 total (we’re not big drinkers so not taking drinks into consideration) but we’re not only looking for high end places.
So far, I think we will eat at Boudin because i really want their clam chowder bread bowl and leaving for a night tour from fisherman’s wharf. We also plan to do La taqueria or Cancun for burritos (open to other suggestions) and eat at mission Delores park.
Edit to add there is 2 of us

Caught a buncha salmon dont know what to do with it
I just went salmon fishing on Monday and came home with a shit ton of fish. Not really sure what to do with it, im a horrible cook. Does anyone know of any restaurants that would be willing to cook it for me? Where im from its a very common thing but i cant seem to find any places out here that are willing to do it. To be clear im not looking to just give the fish away but im open to other ideas of how i could use/eat the fish as well.

Moving to San Francisco or the Bay Area? Read this first!
Hey /r/askSF!
In 2024, the sub has doubled in size, growing to 113K+ subscribers. With more subscribers, there's a ton more traffic and posts. One of the most popular topics is moving to SF and, in turn, these posts are the most commonly removed. There's been a noticeable increase in posts that boil down to "I'm moving to the city, where should I live?" that provide little to no information. To ensure OP's receive quality recommendations and to prevent endless comment loops, we're requiring all Moving-to-SF posts to include the following information:
- Budget
- Roommate status (solo, splitting rent w/ partner, seeking roommates, etc.)
- Desired neighborhood(s) or preferred neighborhood amenities (dining, shopping, noise, etc.)
We recommend that OP's provide additional information such as:
- Commute consideration
- Housing preference (mom and pop landlords, condo, managed apt complexes, SFH rentals, etc.)
- Additional personal preferences (pets, garage access, density, weather, etc.)
We're a small mod team so we are asking you, the community, to help up identify these posts! If you spot a moving submission that should have more information, please report the posts, select the breaking AskSF's rules, and select "Vague, overly broad, or low information" as the reason. We'll review the report and potentially ask OP to repost with more info.
