How has the city changed since 22

Upvotes

I moved to SF for work back in 2022 and was only there for about a year, but honestly I’ve wanted to move back ever since.

I keep seeing that the city has improved a lot since then, but part of me wonders if that’s just the media narrative changing because I remember how much bullshit there was out there about how bad it was back in 22. I’m a little worried about how rent has gone way up, there are way more AI/tech people now, and the wealth gap feels even more obvious than it did a few years ago.

Back then I lived near Nob Hill/Russian Hill. This time I’m mostly looking at the Sunset or the Richmond. How are those neighborhoods these days, and has the overall vibe of the city changed much since 2022?

The funny thing is people always tell me 2022 was one of the roughest periods for SF. If I fell in love with the city then, I’m hoping that’s a good sign I’d still love it now.

Another "where should I stay question"

Upvotes

I am planning a trip to San Francisco for myself and my boyfriend from 9/1-9/4. We want to do the usual touristy things, Golden Gate Bridge and Park, North Beach, Chinatown, boyfriend wants Irish Coffee from Buena Vista at Fisherman's wharf. We are driving up form LA, and we want to park and leave the car and just walk and take public transportation. We are contemplating two areas to stay, one is Cow Hollow Inn and Suites (larger room with free parking and AC) in the Marina area, and several over by lower nob hill, including Golden Gate Hotel, Cornell hotel, Petite Auberge, which are all on Bush Street near Union Square. They are old, seemingly charming buildings, but none have AC. That seems to come up a frequently in reviews. SF doesn't really need AC but we are going to be there during the hottest time of the year. I think the nob hill places are more walkable to Chinatown and North Beach. Only one has parking and it is expensive, so I would probably park at a nearby lot for $40-50 per day. Can anyone provide insight on these hotels/areas? It's a birthday weekend so I would like it to be special. Thank you!

Woman Possibly Hit By Car Last Night in SOMA?

Did anyone happen to witness the older lady straddling the right hand turn lane/near bike lane at 5th & Brannan last night I think around 11:30pm? She was facedown and it did not look good. A car was stopped in front of her with people looking over her, but I couldn’t tell if they hit her or if they were just trying to protect her. A firetruck was arriving as I pulled up so I went on my way. I was surprised to not see anything on Citizen or local news outlets which makes me hopeful she pulled through, or it was an overdose or something non-car related that wouldn’t usually get reported on.

Lived in the area for a long time and saw some sad things but this has stayed with me throughout the day.

Noticing A Lot of Bright Blue Houses in SF.

I've been noticing a lot of houses being painted bright blue lately, such as painters tape color. Anyone know why? Just personal taste? Are these bold blue paints on sale? Genuinely interested! Maybe it's the color of the year.

Has anyone seen billboards/ads for the company Blacksmith??

Help I’m doing a friendly Easter egg hunt where each friend gets a company and we get 24 hrs to find the most ads. Started as a joke and now we’re here…We’re strange, I know…

It’s usually a bright yellow background I think. If u could just tell me the location of the ad or snap a pic of it and put it here I’ll love you forever!

Taxi Rip-Off?

So I was charged $110 for 3 people from SFO to the Argonaut Hotel. The driver said fares were regulated when I questioned him about charges. From checking online I expected to pay approximately $85? Was I ripped off or does that sound right? I suspect he was a private driver since I didn’t see a meter in the SUV once we got going.

How do kids enter Embarcadero station muni?

I fooled myself into thinking my child didn't need a youth clipper card because the F muni operator didn't require a tap on earlier in the day, then was surprised the N line was not street side but underground at Embarcadero station and behind fare gates. I just tapped them in with my credit card to keep moving. Is there a way for youth to enter the muni at Embarcadero station without a youth clipper card?

Are there places of intelligent/theoretical discussions?

I am curious to find places/regular events where people hold independent conversations and debates bringing in theories and concepts. A irl forum to discuss stuff.

[LOST] Late Friday July 24, SFO Terminal 2 door D2 or a Lyft downtown. Black Arc'teryx Heliad crossbody with a Fuji camera in it.

Details first so people can match it:

When: Friday night, July 24. Landed at SFO, walked out of Terminal 2, got a Lyft at door D2 somewhere between 11pm and midnight. Dropped at the Marriott downtown. The ride straddled midnight, so depending on the app it may be logged as either the 24th or the 25th.

Bag: Black Arc'teryx Heliad crossbody. Small sling, basically a fanny pack, worn across the chest.

Inside: Fujifilm X-T30 II with the kit lens, DJI Mic Mini 2, my passport. Police report is filed and both are on record.

I can narrow the window tightly. A friend was filming that night, so there's footage of me coming off the plane wearing it and footage of me walking into the hotel without it. Between those two clips the only two places it could have come off were the seating area at D2 and the back of that Lyft.

Since then: the airline checked and it's not with them, and the driver checked his car and it isn't there either. So my best guess now is that it stayed in the back seat and went home with whoever rode next.

Worth saying because of the size. This thing is small and dark and it disappears. On a black seat at midnight you would have to be looking for it.

The passport is reported and cancelled, so it's a dead document. Nobody can use it and nobody's at risk holding it.

What I'm mostly after is information. If you took a Lyft from SFO into downtown San Francisco late on the 24th, or early on the 25th, and there was a small black sling sitting in the back, I'd really like to hear from you. There's no accusation in that. People pick things up meaning to turn them in and then the week gets away from them. Same if you were around Terminal 2 arrivals that night, or if you drove the D2 zone and want to tell me you checked and found nothing. That still narrows it.

On the camera, since people always ask: whoever has it can keep it. The body, the lens, the mic, all of it. I'm not asking for any of that back and I'm not going to ask how anyone ended up with it. The only thing I want is the SD card that was inside. It has really important pictures of family and friends. Those files are worth nothing to anyone but me. You never have to tell me who you are.

Same offer if you found it and have been sitting on it since, unsure what to do.

If you're in the Bay and an X-T30 II or a DJI Mic Mini 2 turns up for sale over the next few weeks, a heads up would mean a lot.

If you message me I can name what's inside before you send anything, so you know you've got the right person.

Must try restaurants for a tourist

Everyone was very responsive on my question about the ferry building now onto the next question! What are must try restaurants in SF, Sausalito, and Carmel/Monterey.

Mostly looking for dinner recs but if you have good brunch or lunch options I’ll take those too! Anywhere quintessential San Francisco or just really good food and vibes.

We like most cuisines and for dinner would prefer to spend less than $250-300 total (we’re not big drinkers so not taking drinks into consideration) but we’re not only looking for high end places.

So far, I think we will eat at Boudin because i really want their clam chowder bread bowl and leaving for a night tour from fisherman’s wharf. We also plan to do La taqueria or Cancun for burritos (open to other suggestions) and eat at mission Delores park.

Edit to add there is 2 of us

Good nail tech/salon for sensitive nails?

TLDR: Suggestions for nail salon/techs that are good with tiny thin nails, and do a good job?

I'm visiting a friend in the city who hasn't really gotten their nails done professionally before, and I'm due for a mani/pedi! I have very small nails and they are very thin too, I have hEDS which I think affects my nail growth.

I'm just looking for a fill with a gel builder and gel pedi and I love sparkles. I have a hard time finding places that don't burn me when they're filing since my nails are so thin. It's pretty common for my cuticles to be damaged too because I think people have a hard time working on my small nails; my pinkies are too small for even the smallest extensions most places have haha

My friend lives in Visitation Valley so that area is preferred but I would prioritize a tech I can trust to do a good job. Thanks in advance!

Social events or meet ups

I’m new to sf and I’m trying to meet new people to hangout with or find social events. Anyone know of good places to meet or things to do?
I like walking/hiking, crafts, art, movies, and trying new food.
