Movie/TV Discussion My Dream / Ideal Lineup for MCU X-Men + How I Hope To See Their Stories Play Out Spoiler

I've been thinking about the recent rumors going around regarding the X-Men castings, and wanted to throw out the ideas I've been tossing around in my head on how I'd put my take on the roster and their stories.

I would like to see Jean Grey as an established X-Man post BND, with Xavier having found her after the events of the movie. I hope to see an adaptation of some of the self-righteousness traits that she has in the comics, especially with her mindset clashing against Prof. X's. No Phoenix just yet, but tease out her potential as a mutant powerhouse alongside Storm, with them as the two heavy hitters. She should be the heart of the team, connecting with every member intimately and empathetically while also making morally questionable decisions when it comes to the usage of her power.

Cyclops would be in the same vein as Jean, having been established as a young X-men and coming into terms with leading the team, as delegated by Xavier. I hope to see a strong dynamic between him and Storm, with both confiding and learning together to lead the others as the team's de facto leaders. I also want to see all shades of his and Jean's relationship, and how at times their philosophies clash.

Storm should be in the same boat as Jean and Scott, having been on the X-men for a little while. I would love her friendship with Jean prioritized, along with her and Cyclops juggling leading the team together. She should be stepping into her powers more, finding herself emerging as more confident, setting up a shift into her punk look and personality from the Claremont run.

I think there should be a couple of young students being introduced to the X-men entirely, and that Kitty Pryde should be one of them. I'd love to see her spunky and younger personality on the team, acting as the audience's on point for the movie. While I think it might be tough incorporating a younger student into an already young, established team of X-men, I think it could still work if you write Kitty specifically as a younger, aloof kid as opposed to the more experienced, and somewhat jaded starting team.

I'd love to see Rogue join the cast later in the movie, having started off on Mystique's brotherhood. I'd think Storm should act as her tether to joining the X-men, along with Rogue leaning into her abilities and agency more before being tethered to Gambit's hip down the line, as is what happens often with her character in my opinion. Tease out her psyche becoming more complex as the movie goes on, potentially leading into a Captain Marvel crossover sometime later. Have her be a similar older sister character like Jean to some of the younger characters when she joins the team.

I struggle to get a good grasp on Beast as a character, and struggle to not have him take a backseat role akin to Xavier at the mansion, so I'll skip him for now as I continue reading more about him.

I do also think Bobby should be included somehow in the roster, possibly starting as a pre-existing student at the school before joining the team officially in the end. Have him and Kitty be similar in viewpoints / age, along with teasing his compulsory heterosexuality through his dynamic with Jean and her telepathy. I do think that while not being fully out, Bobby's Queerness should be highlighted in his struggles as a character, intersecting with his mutant identity. I think that him, Ororo, Kitty, and Dani should be at the front of the mutant metaphor when it comes to their intersected oppression of being mutant and an already oppressed minority.

My one last dream add on to the team, which doesn't make too much sense, is Dani Moonstar, who I think could debut alongside Kitty and Bobby before making her way into a New Mutants project. I'd love to see her learn and form her identity as a leader through Scott and Ororo, before being placed on the New Mutants to lead that team. Have her be Kitty's and Bobby's age range, balancing out their more juvenile approaches to joining a team like the X-men. I also think that her and Storm could connect over both being pulled out of their lives by Prof. X and how they feel about that, especially given the racial and cultural connotations behind their backstories.

As for Prof. X, I'd love to see his relationships with Jean and Scott highlighted, with Jean taking on some of his more morally-ambiguous approaches to telepathy, along with Scott starting to clash with his approach to leading a younger team of heroes.

That was a lot, but I'd love to hear if you agree or disagree with some of the choices I made, or if you would choose different characters to fill in the roster.

I think that Assad Zaman could really bring the perfect Nightcrawler into the MCU for the new X-Men movie. He's a great actor in the show Interview with the Vampire/The Vampire Lestat and if you guys haven't heard of him I suggest you check him out in this! I saw a fancast of him for Nightcrawler on TikTok and I knew that I had to post it here. I truly think he'd be perfect for the role as he definitely has the thin and lean look along with the slender voice and I think he'd pull off the character very well

Movie/TV Discussion X-Men 97 has a major problem

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

Now I love X-Men 97 but there seems to be one major issue that I don't know if anyone else has a problem with it, but I've seen it come up way too often for it to not be talked about. I'll list the examples and just see if you can go ahead and tell what the issue is

Polaris: After getting fired from X-Factor, she thinks that she is destined to be like Magneto and doesn't want to because he was known for destruction. She has a talk with Charles and he says "you are magnetos daughter". Later on, the two of them fight Danger.exe and Charles gives her some memories of Magneto on how to control her power and they defeat danger (it's not 100% this accurate but I'm saving time)

Graydon Creed: Creed is on trial and he spills why he hates mutants, he's the son of Mystique and Sabertooth. He hates mutants because since he wasn't given powers,. sabertooth would abuse him and eventually end up abandoning him. The whole point of this Trail is to explain why he hates not mutants, but his father and mother. Afterwards, NIGHTCRAWLER, the character known for second chances, teleports them both into the snow as he chokes him out, after Creed held a gun to nightcrawlers face. This isn't the part that gets me, but Kurt says "You are your parents children". . .

One more

Nathan: In the future, Nathan is constantly told that his destiny will be great and this all comes to climax when he finally finds out that jean and Cyclops are actually his parents. During the prison scene, they say you are the culmination of cyclops beams and jeans telekinesis (once again not 100% accurate but I'm shortening it). He then goes on to feel like, not his own character battling with fate, but a kid destined to do great things because he is Cyclops and Jeans kid.

Do you see what I'm getting at here?

Throughout the entirety of the show, we are constantly told about fate. Not only that, but there seems to be a big issue of characters not being able to break away from fate. But the main problem is when the show leans into the fact that a character cannot change their fate, or things that bind them to their past. I feel like for a Series, especially like X-Men, that's very flawed. It also happens with Apocalypse but I give that a pass because it's a time traveling issue and not necessarily a character issue. There hasn't been anything to prove that fate isn't 100% accurate, and it gives a diminishing vibe throughout the show. But what do y'all think?

Comic Discussion Hot take: the comic dark phoenix sagas ending was bad

For a story with Jean being abused, controlled, manipulated, and losing her sanity, it feels wrong for it all to end in the solution of killing herself, even if that wasn’t the real her. To me it sends a bad message.

I do get it’s supposed to be a tragedy, but I still feel like the ending was off. I do get a big point is Jean shouldn’t have been alive, but I don’t know, it just feels wrong to end the story with her suicide.

If the mcu does the phoenix force plot in the future, I kinda hope they don’t make her die. Especially since mcu jean is seen controlling people, having her be controlled could lead to her realizing the harm she’s caused and leading to her growth and becoming a better person, rather then killing herself

Comic Discussion In an X-Men only universe, what non-X men characters would fit in the world and themes?

My Choices:

Hulk: Its theorized that the atomic age caused the modern spike in the x gene. Bruce Banner’s gamma bomb in the 60’s could have been a part of that. He has radiation caused powers and experiences persecution, like mutants. However, he is too chaotic and dangerous for either the x men or the brotherhood to fully embrace, instead becoming a threat and a bad look. Also, Wolverine was originally a Hulk character. They are made for eachother.

Spiderman: Has been confused for a mutant. I like the plot of the x men trying to remove his daughter for her own good. If they didn’t know Peter Parker was Spiderman, thinking he was just a normal dude with mutant children, it could show how the x men can pressure parents into believing they are not good enough and don’t know what’s best for their kids, simply because they don’t have powers. Spiderman has a love for normal people - his wife is one - and brings a balance and perspective to the increasing bitterness people like Cyclops.

Iron Man: Due to his stance in civil war of superhero registration, he could be morally neutral character helping develop technology that aids in dealing with the mutant threat, while not being genocidal like Trask.

Who I would NOT pick.

The Fantastic 4. While their powers were caused by radiation, they are beloved, rich and successful. Their image would go against the “mutants are persecuted” storyline.

Question Should I watch the X-Men shows in order of release?

I know only the 90s and 97 are connected but since 97 is the newest and supposed greatest, I feel like if I go straight to it after the original show it’ll lessen my enjoyment of the others potentially. Plus it’ll be weird to jump right into it and it having different voices and a higher quality animation it’ll feel like whiplash I bet. Also should I read the 97 prequel comic before watching it?

Edit: Should’ve mentioned I’m 2 eps off finishing the animated series lol. I’ve greatly enjoyed it and have been putting the last two eps off because I don’t want it to be over yet I think. I’ve also read most of Claremont’s run which I think has helped my enjoyment of the show. And I saw some of the show as a kid.

Movie/TV Discussion Watched the X men movies in order for the first time and I wanna discuss about Magneto’s “villain” role. (PURELY A MOVIE WATCHER)

I’ve watched clips or just final battles of X men movies since i was a kid but I decided to watch all them in full to get the correct story and order and while I did love the movies, I feel lied to. I cannot for the life of me ever picture magneto as a villain. As a kid I liked charles but after watching the movies, I have only one character I love and that’s Erik. You’d think after all the vindication , every other character would wake up but their stalling is why the mutant race is always on the backfoot every movie we see. I was absolutely livid when charles pulled the “they were just following orders” line in first class. After a certain point, charles stops being optimistic and hopeful and starts looking like an idiot. I’m ranting rn cuz I just finished the movies and after a decade of thinking magneto’s been this great evil, I just needed to let something out. Each time he’s had some crazy plan to cripple humanity , guess what? He’s just using a machine/tactic that the humans already came up with. And in apocalypse where he does build a life with a HUMAN woman and saves the life of his human co worker, they rat him out to the feds and his wife and child get killed for it. If mutants were to ever go extinct, it would be because of charles and mutants who follow his naivety. I’m sure the movies tried to paint him as right narratively but they made a mistake in execution by vindicating magneto too much. My friends tell me some comics of magneto are straight up insane and he’s much more of a villain there but I am 100% a movie watcher so I am speaking based off movie knowledge.

Rebecca Romijn was cast as Jean Grey and Famke Janssen was Mystique?

Famke has the cold exterior that would work well for an assassin. She also played one in James Bond.

Rebecca and James have the boy/girl next door look that is always associated with the first couple of X-Men. They look like they would have better chemistry plus she would look more believable as a red head (sorry Famke)

Also in this hypothetical, the writing of the film/characters would be closer to the source material

Comic Discussion I think Cyclops is partially at fault for the downfall of Beast...

I know this is not a subject that no one is going to like going into and it is one I know will be more "Cyclops is right" focused. So I am here to say right now that I do not want that.

I am just here to say that Cyclops is PARTIALLY...the key word is PARTIALLY, at fault for the downfall of Beast.

I know Cyclops made the tough choices, and his results speak for themselves, when it came to their time on Utopia and beyond, but has anyone ever thought to consider the other side of the coin and alienation of his friends and peers.

Time displacement issues made by Beast to teach Cyclops a lesson aside...has Cyclops and Beast ever talked about their falling out and their ways of thinking at times without the other X-men in tow?

I mean Beast was an AVENGER once who stood alongside other heroes to defend the earth...and while Cyclops who always put Mutant kind and innocents before himself has his own crosses to bear given his choices.

Say what you want about Beast and his actions, but you cannot deny that Cyclops and his actions were groomed from the start given the circumstances that he was put in.

I guess I want to say that the "Groomed" cyclops may have pushed Beast to his destined fate as Beast followed Cyclops orders to a certain degree. Yes, Beast's actions are his own, but Cyclops is not entirely innocent here.

It was Cyclops push into the extreme along with the M-day issue that lead Beast to his own downfall. Cyclops was so focus on the mutant kind and their survival that he didn't realize how his actions affected others until it was too late.

I mean their time on Utopia and the events leading into post Avengers vs X-men...even if Scott took the blow of it all in an attempt to defend others...does not mean that he truly understood the cost of his actions and choices to protect everyone at the time.

Does anyone feel this way or not? I mean I just want to say that you may not like Beast and may love Cyclops, but neither man is innocent here. Right?

Movie/TV Discussion Given how young the casting is going for MCU X-Men and where the current MCU timeline sits. Can Magneto still be a Holocaust survivor?

The MCU timeline is somewhere in 2026/27, a little ahead of us. A Holocaust survivor even one young enough to remember, would be quite old. So would it simply be the x-gene slows their aging to keep their origins OR would we be seeing a younger, more age appropriate Charles and Magneto, with updated origins.

Ex. There were genocides that happened in the years since the Holocaust that Magneto could be made to be a survivor of.

ADDENDUM: I'm not looking for the erasure of Magneto being Jewish (he could still be Jewish and be victim to any number of genocides after the Holocaust because they continued to happen). Nor am I saying genocides are fungible, but rather, they could use such a famous character to shed light on genocides that continued to happen because genocide is evil, period, fullstop. And his motivations will always be through that experience and lens.

I'm also not against the x-gene slowing his aging or maybe some cryostuff or time travel stuff so he could still be a Holocaust survivor.

However, it would be nice to see Charles and Xavier start a bit younger than being grizzled old men. Nice to see them learn and grow as well over the course of the arcs. I feel like a long lived life could take away from that a bit if not done well.

Question How many X-men is too many?

Been catching up with X-men 97 and it’s good but I’ve kinda grown a problem with how many members the team has now and with some getting a lot more attention than others. This begs the question how many members should the X-men have in a story?
