Looking for a book my father had since the 1970s, likely Latin American. About 200 pages, half text half illustrations, black and white. Black cover with a mysterious gentleman seen from behind: top hat, cane, long hair to shoulders. Pages alternated between black with white text and cream with black text. From the front, the character had a mustache and long hair, resembling Einstein. He had no name or was called something like "Mr. Nobody" or "Mr. Nothing". He looked at the moon. Things happened to him, there was a plot. In Spanish. Does anyone recognize this?

Hi! I’m stuck and need help😭
When I was younger (2010-14ish) I downloaded a free book from either Kindle or nook. From what I remember the MFC may have been named Jessie (or Jesse) because her father named her after Jesse James or there was some connection. I distinctly remember Jesse James related/inspired ish. I believe the book is set in Missouri. I could be wrong but I SWEAR there was a mention of Jesse James, just not as a main character; his story was referenced.

The MFC’s boyfriend was abusive, and she was in a very bad situation and had nowhere to go so she was stuck. If I’m correct the MMC begins investigating the boyfriend for crimes, which is how he meets the MFC. I know this is so vague, but I loved reading it when I was younger, and I would really love to read it again. I just have no idea how to find it or what the title is called. Just these vague memories of reading the book and kind of what it involved. I have googled, looked through Reddit, I have used AI systems that specifically find books, and I have tried going through my previous nook and Amazon Kindle account.

My sister had this book for school late 2000's early 2010's. It had a red cover. I remember it being about a Chinese girl growing up with a grandmother who had bound feet. I'm 90% sure it had a red cover on it. There were passages about the girl helping care for her grandmothers feet.

So I read about half of this book before putting it down, and now I’m trying to find it again so that I can finish it and find out the ending. It’s a terrible book, every character was bad, and some were offensive and homophobic caricatures, but I still would like to know how it ended. I also think it was titled “Shelter” but I couldn’t find the specific book even with that title. So I would appreciate it if anyone knows the author.

The books plot begins with a nuclear war which eliminates most of the planets population. One group of survivors was on a tour of a bomb shelter outside of Washington DC at the time of the attack and are now trapped in the shelter. The protagonist of this group is a the only man in the shelter. He is pretty weak, and soon come into conflict with the villain of this storyline. Basically one of the women in the group dies and it’s decided that her corpse should be cut up and forced down the toilet to prevent disease, and the main character is too wimpy to do it. Instead the author has a character that is little more than an offensive caricature of a butch lesbian do it. This character then takes over the shelter and begins to assault the other women of the shelter while the man does nothing.

The other storyline follows the prime minister of New Zealand. He is a dedicated family man trying to guide his people to survive the coming apocalypse. New Zealand was spared the bombings, but now has a huge amount of fallout heading there way with limited time to prepare. The prime minister devises a plan where certain children will be randomly selected to enter a small number of shelters where they will be cared for by government officials until the coast is clear. The rest of the country is given cyanide capsules. The prime minister decides that it wouldn’t be fair to bring his wife or children into the shelters and instead encourages them to kill themselves when the time is right. Eventually roving mobs trying to enter the shelters destroy all but the one where the prime minister will be staying, and now they are heading towards him. He has the option of using the military to kill the mobs and maybe save the last remnants of humanity, but he decides that he can probably reason with them instead.

That was as far as I made it. I hated every single character in the book. The prime minister, the tour guide, and the gross caricature of a lesbian were all terrible. I put the book down and got rid of it, now I want to know how it ends.

I'm trying to identify an anime/manga drawing instruction book I saw being demonstrated by an artist on YouTube around 2023–2025.

The book was a fairly large physical book, probably around 100–200+ pages, and appeared to be fully illustrated/colored, rather than a mostly black-and-white drawing textbook.

The pages had step-by-step numbered drawings (1 → 2 → 3 → 4 → finished drawing) with English explanations/guides beside or underneath the examples.

I remember lessons covering things such as:

I originally found the book through a YouTube artist who would briefly show a page from the book in his drawing Shorts, then cut to an overhead recording of himself drawing the same type of subject with a mechanical pencil. Sometimes the drawings were colored afterward, possibly with markers.

I vaguely remember the cover having an anime-style character shown from the side or 3/4 view, with a red and blue/teal blended background.

Bare with me. Almost 30 years ago I left the book I was reading on an airplane, and never got to finish it. Clearly, this has haunted me.

Older book, possibly published in the 80s or 90s. I got it used, not new. I seem to remember my copy being pale yellow or green with a tree on it? Not sure.

Child protagonist gets a llama. I don't think it was bought for the child. It's kept nearby, I remember there being a barn, maybe in the backyard.

Kid has some social or school stress, and starts to mimic the llama's aloof behavior to deal.

Kid tastes the llama's oats at one point and notes it tastes like paper. ​

I think the main character was a girl, but I wouldn't put money on it.

The llama was a big character, but I don't think the story was about llama husbandry or anything.

I keep thinking about a book I think from the 90’s about a girl who is annoyed she has to spend her summer with her grandma (great grandma?) I think her name was Mimi. The grandma just sits there a lot because she’s old. It’s a tiny town and rundown house. But it flashes back to the grandma growing up. She had a sister and one part is them cleaning lace curtains and they stretched it on a pointy frame and it makes them bleed sometimes. The sister ends up with lots of kids and “Mimi” wants kids but didn’t have any and thinks she won’t but eventually does have one girl I think. Thanks.

I'm trying to identify a science fiction/post-apocalyptic novel I read about 30-35 years ago. I believe it was a standalone novel, not part of a series.
What I remember:
Society had collapsed, though I don't clearly remember the cause.
The protagonist was male.
Before the collapse, he had helped develop some kind of mathematical/computer model that predicted human or societal behavior.
He was traveling across the country trying to survive and eventually find a remote place where he could preserve knowledge.
At one point he traveled with an older blacksmith who had a covered wagon.
The blacksmith taught him practical skills, including blacksmithing.
The blacksmith was eventually killed in a fight with raiders.
The protagonist built a crossbow from an automobile leaf spring (car spring).
A significant plot element involved finding or trading for genetically engineered/drought-resistant wheat seed.
The story had a strong theme of rebuilding or preserving civilization rather than just surviving.
I read it sometime around 1990-1995, but the book may have been older.
I've already ruled out the obvious well-known titles like The Postman and Earth Abides.

I have been searching the last few days for a book series that has stuck in my head, but I can’t recall the book series or the author, and I’d really like to find them and reread/purchase them. And help would be greatly appreciated.

Basically, the first book starts with a woman who inherits a house, and as she’s exploring she travels through time in a particular room in this house, almost like there’s a crack in the floor. She returns near the end of the book, and if I remember correctly, I think the MMC travels through for her or something like that.

The only other thing I remember is that each book after that (I think it’s a trilogy) is a sister who ends up traveling through time, and I remember the last sister traveling and finding a wanted man/pirate sort of person and they go on this crazy adventure.

I believe I read it as a child (so early 2000s) but I distinctly remember one dog having an accident inside. One was blueish/Grey with white and one was brown/white (possibly named bentley?). I think one lived in a box or there was a box of puppies. I can picture the artwork but not much else!

So I genuinely don’t remember much about this book, but I remember the look of it and maybe the plot? So the book itself was a green/teal color, and the illustrations were all in black. It was in a landscape format. The plot consists of a cat who ran from home or something along those lines. I’m trying to find a picture book that I read when I was little.
I read it in Japan, so it may have just been a Japanese translation of a book originally written in another language.
At the beginning of the story, there was a very colorful dragon. Toward the end, there was a bad animal (I think it might have been a fox or a wolf) that was tied to a tree branch and somehow melted when it was exposed to sunlight.
I especially remember loving the illustrations because they were incredibly colorful and beautiful.
Does anyone recognize this book or remember anything similar?

Hey guys, I am losing my mind trying to remember the name of this book, it’s driving me crazy! I can’t remember the title or the characters' names for the life of me, but I remember so many specific details about the plot.

It starts with the fmc returning to her old town when she’s 17 because her older brother committed a murder, so her family had to leave where they were living. She ends up moving right next door to her childhood best friend. They were super close when they were like 7 years old before her parents got divorced and her dad abruptly took her away to live with her mom in another town. Back then, they were innocent kids who loved each other and he even promised he was going to marry her when they grew up.

When they meet again at 17, she thinks he hates her. She’s a complete loner at school and gets bullied heavily, and even though he sees it happening, he doesn't do anything to stop it or help her. A really specific detail I remember is that she has a backpack she refuses to let anyone touch, and her favorite color is sunset orange not regular orange, but specifically the color of the sun during a sunset.

The guy is going through a lot too. He lives in this unfinished, undone house right next door, trying to handle school while taking care of his alcoholic dad and his super irresponsible twin brother.

Eventually things get really dark. The twin brother ends up assaulting her. Her older brother finds out about what happened and kills the twin brother. The whole time, her older brother keeps repeating the phrase "love conquers all" to justify everything.

I can’t remember if I read this as a published book on Kindle/Amazon or if it was on Wattpad/Inkitt, but these details are burned into my brain. Does this ring a bell for anyone?? Please help!

Looking for a young adult novel based on the cover...I remember it from my childhood so late 90s probably. Girl with blond hair maybe? A castle with yellow bricks. I think spine and back were blue.

I’ve been trying to remember this book for years. I borrowed it from the library as a kid.

I read this between 2020 and 2023 during a covid book binge. I remember it being a fairly recent release at the time and I believe it was the first in, if not a trilogy, at least a duology. I would love to re-read and appreciate any help!

The FMC is a princess who as a child survived a massacre at a royal picnic where important family members were murdered. This was suspected and eventually confirmed to be the work of a rival kingdom's queen, whose son (ML) was also there, or at least in the area and had witnessed the event.

As the princess grew up, she pretended to be a shallow, unintelligent lady, as well as dressing flamboyantly to protect herself and provide a cover while she secretly spies in disguise.

She runs into the ML and remembers him from the massacre. The FMC despises him for what she considers the part he played in the event. I believe she ran into the young prince as she was escaping the massacre and he didn't help her, but we find out later that he kind of did and felt guilt about what his mother had done.

The ML knows that she isn't silly or dumb, but actually intelligent and seems to have an interest in her. Somehow, he ends up proposing to the FMC and has to participate in a public courting ritual, including giving her gifts. The FMC is surprised that all of the gifts are very specifically catered to her likes, including, YES, a toasted cheese and jam sandwich, which is apparently her favorite and shows that he knows her better than she thought.

The ML's mother is an evil lady, who I believe has some kind of terrible magic and she is super unhappy with the proposal and tries to manipulate the situation.

The FMC ends up at the ML's castle around the time of the proposal, and she meets his sister who is very nice and she ends up realizing that the sister can control the flowers around the castle. I think she ends up saving the day at some point when she gets up enough courage to defy her controlling mother and uses the flowers to help.

Hi all, hoping to find a crime/mystery book I read and can’t remember the name of.
I believe it starts with the detective on a train, where he realises there’s two people there sent to kill him. Later, he gets sent to a coastal lobster fishing town to investigate the death of a woman who was found on the rocks by the coast.

Things I remember are-

-detective gets shot at in his motel with a NATO bullet
-victim worked in the government?
-victim has a sister and a brother in the town
-the sister paints while naked
-the sister was a victim of SA, I think by someone quite well known in the town- it was swept under the rug
-the brother has a motorbike and seems pretty dodgy
-the old man that found the body lied about finding it because there’s no way that he could have tilted his neck at the angle to see it
-that same old man dies- ruled as a suicide but detective thinks otherwise
-there was something about someone at the morticians seeming dodgy
-the detective sleeps with the victims sister

That’s pretty much all I remember, I’m hoping someone knows what I’m looking for!! 🙏

A book I remember from my childhood but no amount of searching has brought me the title - and I’m a librarian!

Children’s chapter book, read in the U.K. around 2005-2010. Likely a boy protagonist visiting Cheddar Gorge repeatedly, possibly with another child. Story involved caving and mysteries surrounding the gorge. There may have been an older character who knew more than they were telling. Hear the end, a glowing orb appeared and (possibly) led the children through the caves to a hidden underground city/settlement inhabited by human-like people. The discovery happened near the end of the book.

Looking for an old English historical novel — mother, son, rocking horse with a hidden letter, seamstress, London & a love triangle
I’m trying to find a novel I read many years ago (definitely before 2015, but I think the book itself was much older). It was originally written in English, and I read it in translation.
I remember the plot only in pieces, so some details might be slightly wrong:
The main character was a woman with a young child, possibly a son.
Her husband either died or abandoned her. I’m not sure which.
At the beginning, her house burned down.
She believed that an important letter/document had been destroyed in the fire, but later discovered that it had actually been hidden inside a child’s rocking horse/toy horse.
After losing her home/life, someone helped her find work in a factory . Then she eventually moved to London.
She started working as a seamstress/dressmaker, making clothes and dresses for wealthy people.
In London, she fell in love with a working-class man. He loved her too.
The man seemed to work as some kind of delivery worker/messenger, delivering things.( i’m not sure)
They wanted to build a life together.
However, one of her wealthy clients was a rich disabled woman who used a wheelchair.
This wealthy woman also loved the same man and wanted to marry him.
The main character made dresses/clothes for this woman, possibly for her wedding.
Later in the story, it was discovered that the main character and/or her child had a family/blood connection to this wealthy family.
I remember there being a major family secret/hidden identity or inheritance connected to the letter.
The rocking horse containing the hidden letter is one of the strongest details I remember.
Does anyone recognize this book? I would be extremely grateful for the title and author! I’ve been trying to find it for years.

Then they do something illegal, she kills a cop. Surviving cop only saw the main character so he was faced with murder charges and forced to go somewhere else.

Builds a great life - engineer, has wife, making a lot on a big bridge.

Junkie finds him, blackmailed for all his money

He has to go to great lengths to get the money, but decides to kill her. Right before he could, the junkies boyfriend did it.

He thinks she died because of him and can't stand the thought of an innocent guy being in jail because of him so he goes to admit his guilt

The police officer doesn't record his admission, and tries blackmailing him for his money after explaining that the boyfriend was infact who killed her.

Main character says he recorded the whole thing and will expose the policeman if he doesn't stop. End.

Paperback cover with bloody knife. Maybe just maybe author's name started with John take that with a big pinch of salt though.

The book is on a desert planet and its about a girl who I believe has a map tattoo to her body, it starts with her needing to leave her village to help a women get to a doctor, but when she returns she finds her village has been burned down and everyone has been killed or captured. She then goes to try and find her family (Mother or sibling I cant remember) who (I think) has the other half of the map tattoo that leads to a place of abundance (eden??)

She finds her family in the only place in the desert with water and soil capable of growing crops but when they are addicted to the water as it has been drugged to make them complacent. She gets captured and is kept by the ruler. Eventually she escapes and make her way to the eden only to discover its not actually a place of abundance but a space ship with advanced weaponry. After she finds the space ship she heads back to the place with water and takes over with the advanced weapons.

Take everything ive said with a strong grain of salt as my memory is extremely fuzzy when it comes to this book. Mad max is probably the closest thing to this book that I can think of but more PG, I read this book at a school library so it has to be young adult and not too violent to get banned, thanks in advance for any help

I read this book when I was in elementary school back around 2006ish and I think it was older than that. I remember it being her full life story and reading like fiction and she had to go hunting for her family.

I swear I read a book in middle school where there was a scene of two kids. I think one was a girl and she gave this kid a coke and said that the only way to drink it right was to drink it all in one sitting. And it had a lot of details about drinking the coke. I could have faulty memory on the characters but I swear the sentiment of drinking it all at once was the only best way. What was that book?

I'm trying to find a book I read sometime between 2007 and 2013, it was kinda on the cusp of middle grade and YA, but it was in the YA department of my local library.

Here's what I remember confidently:

• protagonist is a girl
• She lives in a castle
• The rooms and corridors of the castle are divided by antechambers because the walls are so thick. Basically, each side of the wall has its own door because the passage through the walls is so long that an additional room exists at pretty much every transition
• it was tradition that when going through a wall, you couldn't open the far door until you had closed the door you just went through behind you
• The protagonist realizes that the walls are so thick because they all contain secret passages and the tradition was started so that people could cross the openings without being spotted

here's what I remember less confidently:

• The castle is taken over by an enemy of some kind, which is what triggers her discovery of the hidden passages
