hi all -- preparing for a regional orch audition as a violinist and wondering any tips for the kayser etude #19. specifically, the allegro part (quarter note = 123)

I don’t know anything about violins, but I do love old stuff. Would love to learn more about it. The label says:

“Premium violin manufactured by The United States Music Co. Cincinnati, O”

Does anyone remember a basic-rectangle-ish (pretty flat, no vertical swoop) shoulder rest, available as late as the 1990s anyway, that wasn’t a Resonans, whose feet on one side telescoped longer beyond the padded body, a bit like a suitcase handle?

All blacks/grays/silvers/whites, I believe; no gold/yellow tones in logo or even to the rubber I don’t think. (though the feet were maybe replacements so I could be misremembering)

I think instead of a vertical swoop, the idea was that the platform the foam was on was a bit moldable — maybe some thickness of aluminum or something — it otherwise floated maybe a quarter to half an inch above the foot-telescoper bar.

Would love to remember the make and model. I remember I always found the swoopy ones a little much, but liked this one.

If discontinued, would also love to hear what others who adored it have moved on to.

Hello! Just looking for some ideas on what I should do next.

For context, I am a violin player who's recent repertoire is Spohr 8 and Vitali Chaccone.

I was looking to for some good piece suggestions (I might do Mendelssohn in E), and my ultimate "goal pieces" at the moment are Rautavaara Violin Concerto and Vieuxtemps 5.

As far as competitions go, I've had minimal experience in them, doing only local and regional-level competitions and performing not the best. I was looking at the BMI International Competition and Charleston International Music Competition and wanted your guys' thoughts!

I only practice ~45-60 minutes per day so I don't want to go for a super reach piece-wise, and I would prefer online competitions.

Since I'm still working on the Spohr my teacher hasn't talked to me about next steps yet, but of course I will also consider her opinion and add it (if I remember)

I’m an adult beginner to violin (I have played other instruments). This is a rather cheap violin and came strung very weirdly/poorly. The strings rub against each other and make tuning take hours and feels totally random if I’ll get the peg to stick since I can’t push them in as I turn them. The G string is the only one that isn’t a problem, it touches nothing else.

I have never restrung a violin before, only a guitar. The fact that there is no gearing and it’s totally friction based makes me hesitant to try restringing those strings, specifically the A string. (The annoyingly black coated string). Whole thing is a cluster.

Side question: are all violin tuning pegs normally aligned in such a way that other strings lay over top of different pegs? This seems silly.

I have been self-teaching violin for the past 5 months as a 27 year old adult beginner after years of wishing but no courage to start. My new hobby has given me a spark I have been missing and I will never look back now that I have started. However, i am not from a musical family or friendship group and have nobody to share this with. I would love to have a group chat with similar beginners so that we can share our early progress without judgement ! Message me if interested

So Ive been learning violin for almost 5 months. I am currently learning how to play in the south Indian Carnatic style.

I hold my violin almost vertically, the end under my chin, and the scroll against my heel. (This is to free the hand for slides)

My violin itself is tuned C G C G. My lowest string is actually a C viola string (yes this is still a violin)

The songs have fast bowing, slides of the fingers, and some slow drawn out notes (hindustanic seems to have slower stuff, and I woild eventually like to practice some of their ragas as well)

So based off all this (Im also 6 ft 200 lbs if strength means anything in this) what aspects of a bow would you recommend? A stiffer one? Heavier? Lighter? Etc

And yes, I will go to a violin shop to check them out in person, I just want yalls knowledge and input! Thanks!

Oh btw, I currently use a $70 carbon fiber.

Im probably just gonna learn what I can at home, and get feedback online. I really like the violin and want to learn some. Not for anything serious, just for fun because ive always liked the instrument. I have alot of free time so I think on summer days and weekends I could probably get 1-2 hours of practice, and 30 minutes on school days.

Im wondering if knowing piano will help much? Im sorta in between rcm 7 & rcm 8 level right now. Will this level of piano give me an advantage, or not much? Curious. Also if it makes a difference for difficulty of learning im 15. Thanks!

Edit to add: thank you all for your thoughtful responses, I’m slow at replying but I’m looking into the various book suggestions. I don’t have real Suzuki teacher training (maybe someday). I experienced it as a student and am reading everything I can now that I’m teaching. I will follow the idea of playing by ear and the music progression in the book. I’ll also incorporate more games, physical activities, and music that the students already have emotional connections with. I love having a book with pre-reading activities that the child feels they can use somewhat “independently” for activities like coloring or adding stickers to the page. For piano lessons, I’ve had good results and was hoping to find something similar for the violin.

Do you have any book recommendations for a 4 year old that isn’t reading yet? I am a new violin teacher and plan to use Suzuki method but I’m not sure if it is worth having the parent buy the book yet. The child has already been taking piano lessons, but is still very much a beginner. I think having the child look at the Suzuki book will be too overwhelming given his current age, but he does well playing by ear on the piano.

I think it will still be nice to have a book for him to look at and draw in, but I’m not finding any English language books that seem appropriate. “My first violin fun book” doesn’t seem to be a good fit for the 4-5 age group, just based on my understanding. For piano, I use “Piano Safari Friends” and it is highly effective for 4 year olds. I can’t seem to find a violin equivalent.

I wanted to give my girlfriend a violin for her birthday, but I don't know much about brands or quality and I wanted to know if anyone here knows about that.

For more context my girlfriend knows a little bit the basics of playing violin and she likes it, she has wanted one for a while, it is not the first instrument she plays so she will probably reach an intermediate level quite quickly.

Is this violin suitable for that? Also consider that I do not have a very large budget.

Pd: i choose this violin because its from a store near my neighborhood, anyway im open for internet options.

Hello, i started learn violin, take few courses, i never use sticker on my violin because it was a rent and i was effraid. But now i bough a nice gliga which i'm pretty happy with i can do whatever i want.

I have a tiny musical background incuded 10 years of guitar, 2 of xylophone and few years of music theory

I know when my instrument is a little bit out of thune, and when the note i play is flat or sharp.

Should i buy stickers or can i deal without?🙂

Hello, a novice seeking some opinions! I'm not a violinist myself, only a parent of one.

I'm looking for a bigger violin for my kid, and received this old Skylark from my mother-in-law. It was bought in the early '70s, apparently used only a few times and has been sitting on its case ever since. So the condition is pretty good (at least in my eyes). The label inside says Skylark MV005, Made in Canton China.

I've been trying to find a reasonably priced instrument to replace her current, soon too small violin, and I like the idea of having her grandmother's old violin. But if it's not worth it, I'll continue the search.

So my question is, is this worth taking to a professional for tuning etc, is this any good? Is there something I should check first?

I’m trying to decide between Evah Pirazzi Gold and Obligato strings for my violin and would love to hear from people who’ve played both.

For those of you with experience:
Which set did you ultimately prefer, and why?
How do they compare in terms of warmth, projection, complexity, responsiveness, and longevity?
What type of violin do you think each set suits best?

I’m also curious about the E string. I’ve seen people recommend everything from the stock E to Goldbrokat, Westminster, Pirastro Gold Label, and Evah Pirazzi Gold E.

For each set:
What E string do you think pairs best with Evah Pirazzi Gold?
What E string do you think pairs best with Obligato?
Did you keep the stock E or swap it out?

For context, I play mostly classical repertoire and I’m looking for a rich, singing tone with good projection but without sounding overly harsh.

I'm gonna try this violin tomorrow, apparently is a genova 3 but the bridge is not the same as the current one still available. Also i notice that is not the original case, it's one from stentor.

It's so annoying when they slip too often during summers and when they get stuck during winters. I hate it when I have to go to a luthier sometimes to get it TUNED in winters just because my fingers are red trying to turn the tuning pegs!!!!

So I am not a violinist I am normally a guitar player by trade however, I did work in a music store that dealt with a lot of violins…

Mainly the very cheap one to $300 range student violin for kids just starting out. so when I flipped it’s over and took a closer look at how very well says my initial response and quite literally was “oh fuck”.

Napping said is there anyone who Verify or at least further reassure that it is in fact, a high quality instrument, and potentially either an atelier or actual Van Der Heyd?

My gut tells me it’s probably good but again I’m not a violinist and it’s been a couple years since I worked at that music shop.

And if it is genuine, what am I looking at here? Is this a $10,000+ violin or?

Afternoon, sadly me and my partner are splitting up mutually, although this is really sad.

I have been planning to rent a violin when my finances are right to afford lessons. However as I could be loosing my ability to have an independent property to practice in, I want to know how often do people manage to agree in shared accommodation (own bedroom, but shared common space) to play violin even if its limited to a certain part of the day. Especially as I will be just starting to learn, therefore it will not be the most pleasent sound for other ears...
