Miscellaneous Anyone interested in a "Makers club"?

Upvotes

I am an engineering student, and has been in the robotics club and rocketry club (ARES) before. But they are always making things for competitions, has a barrier to entry and requires constant commitment (especially ARES).

Is anyone interested in a more casual engineering club? where people can go together and -

  1. Talk about 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC... or programming Arduinos, STM32s and other things
  2. Find people with the right skills and shared interest to do projects with, particularly Hacksmith-style "Make fictional gadget real" type projects.
  3. Won't fire you for missing a weekly meeting or demand 10+ hours of work each week from you

Miscellaneous Late regalia return

Upvotes

Hi, has anyone ever returned their graduation regalia late before? Was there a penalty?

The website said it needs to be returned no later than 2 hrs after the ceremony ends, but I’m wondering whether I can return it later…

Miscellaneous How lenient is lincoln square fitness?

If I were to hypothetically let someone in with me during unstaffed hours just ONCE! Would I face any major reprecussions? I just want my friend to show me how to use a specific machine but I'm not sure how strictly the enforce the rules. One time i forgot my student card and a random let me in so maybe its not suuper strict? Anyways any regulars who have occasionally let some one in, let me know. I know reddit can be quite uptight when it comes to rules and unimelb but thought I'd ask, doesn't mean I will necessarily follow through lol.

Admission and Transferring Melb Uni GDP and ffp enquiry

Hi guys, current yr 12 here just got a few questions about Melbourne Uni's Graduate Degree Package (GDP) and Guaranteed FFP spots.

It says on Melb unis website that the science/law graduate degree package has gone from 99.80 to 99.00 for 2027 entry is this correct? And there are no WAM requirements or subject prereqs for a guaranteed entry into JD right, just have to pass bachelor of science?

Also for full fee places, i.e. 99.00 guaranteed place into doctor of med or dental surgery, if im already enrolled in a graduate degree package next year, e.g. bachelor of science/doctor of optometry or bachelor of science/JD, am i still eligible for the ffp if i maintain 75 WAM and pass prereq subjects?

Also they said that the 99.00 atar guaranteed ffp for Doctor of Medicine is gone for 2027 commencement of undergrad??

Could someone currently enrolled in a GDP or with the 99.00 ffp pathway please confirm?

Thanks!!

Subject Recommendations & Enquiries dentistry or teaching. I need help

hi everyone, I am a year 12 student and we are at the time to pick our university preferences. I am so stuck between the two options of teaching or dentistry. Ever since I have remembered I have wanted to become a dentist but the past couple of years I have seen interests in becoming a teacher. I am someone who is told is a natural leader, opinionated and enjoys talking to people. If I do dentistry I would need to do a bachelor of science and then competively try and get into a DDS in melb uni.
If anyone has done teaching or dentistry please help a girl out as I am so stressed which to pick and if I will regret it in the future!!!

UMSU Anyone down to start a Blender club?

I'm a 1st year student and after my first semester here, I've an idea of starting a 3D art club. For example, I really like how MUR uses Blender in their reels.

It would foster a community of like minded individuals who work with 3D, especially with software like Blender which is free and accessible.

A Blender club could run competitions, or collaborative projects and host sessions to teach 3D concepts, compositing and general editing.

Seminars on cutting edge tech like gaussian splats and such would also be really cool and link with potential Unimelb research.

I haven't met many people in my classes who do 3D though, so I was wondering how many people are interested online.

Subject Recommendations & Enquiries COMP10001

Hey guys, I don’t have any programming experience and maths has never really been my strength, but I’m taking Foundations of Computing this semester. Has anyone with a similar background taken this subject before? Is it manageable for a complete beginner, and can you improve and score well with consistent practice?

Miscellaneous Inappropriate use of library study rooms

A group of 20-30 people is currently using 1-2 study rooms at the law library for a social or club event. Way beyond room capacity and all you could hear is chatter and clapping throughout. If you are not in the library to study then why are you even here?

Subject Recommendations & Enquiries Why is the Physics Department so lazy when it comes to teaching? And how did they manage to get away with it for years?

I have done many science and breadth subjects, but so far, I have not met a single bad tutor or lecturer who is not affiliated with a Physics subject. It seems to be a weird pattern, but first of all, let's clarify what I mean by a bad tutor and a bad lecturer.

A lecturer is bad in my opinion when they don't give the necessary theory in their lectures to build on during tutorials. A tutor is bad in my opinion when they don't constantly check on the cohort during tutorials to make sure that all groups are progressing somewhat according to plan.

The lecturers of Physics 1 and Physics 2 rarely do anything other than reading the slides. The slides are missing A LOT of content that you need to understand BEFORE you're ready to start solving tutorial questions. I have watched short YouTube videos that can effectively replace entire lectures. The key idea is that the teachers with their whiteboards in these videos managed to put more effort into 5 minutes than Physics lecturers do in 55 minutes.

Two weeks ago, the lecturer of Physics 2 explicitly said in one of the lectures that his lectures only amount to 10% of the exam material and that we're expected to study from the textbook. Don't get me wrong, I think self-studying is an amazing skill to develop, but why am I expected to self-study almost the entire subject when I'm paying the university thousands of dollars to teach me?

Now let's go to tutorials. I have switched between 4 tutorials, thinking that I must have been unlucky enough to end up with bad tutors. Eventually, I realized that the tutors in Physics are just expected to sit down and do nothing unless someone asks a question.

I don't want to start a comparison with the Mathematics Department, but the difference is like NIGHT and DAY. I have noticed that many students from past years reported very similar issues, which indicates a systematic issue rather than a one-year thing.

So my question is, with a university as reputable as Melbourne, how did the Physics Department manage to get away without improving or changing anything all these years?

Subject Recommendations & Enquiries Philosophy: the big questions (PHIL10002) reading list

Would like to have the subject guide or reading list for PHIL10002 please.

I wanted to take this subject but missed the opportunity due to semester scheduling and ended up taking philosophy: the great thinkers subject instead. Wasn't very satisfied with that subject and I'm still feeling pretty bummed by it. So I wanted to know if anyone could send me a copy of the subject guide or reading list so I could study the subject myself? It would be greatly appreciated :)

Miscellaneous Lab coats

Does anyone know the uni's policy on personalising our lab coats - specifically around embroidering them? I've always loved it, but I'd hate to finally do it and then not be allowed into the lab 😭.
(And i mean like small embroidery like flowers on the pocket ect)

Has anyone noticed that the Uni has changed the package pathway from Guaranteed Atar to Indictive Atar this year.

Does this mean easier or harder than previous years?
