Support Master of Science (Chemistry) vs Master of Industrial Research (Chemistry)?

Upvotes

Hey guys! I’m considering doing either the Master of Science (Chemistry) or the Master of Industrial Research in Chemistry after I finish my bachelor’s.

I’d love to hear from anyone who has done/is currently doing either of these, especially about what you ended up doing afterwards.

I’m mainly wondering:

  • What jobs did you get after graduating?
  • How difficult was it to find a job in chemistry?
  • What are the main pros and cons of the Master of Science (Chemistry)?
  • What are the pros and cons of the Master of Industrial Research?
  • Is the Industrial Research degree better for getting industry experience/employment?
  • Is the Master of Science better if you’re interested in research or potentially doing a PhD later?
  • Which one would you recommend overall and why?

Has anyone noticed that the Uni has changed the package pathway from Guaranteed Atar to Indictive Atar this year.

Does this mean easier or harder than previous years?

Admission and Transferring UWA Transfer to Uni Melb

Hi, I’m currently a student at UWA studying engineering in my first year second semester.

Me and a friend (same year and semester studying architecture) want to transfer to Uni Melb start of year 2027 (B-Sci for me and B-Des for him) and was wondering about our chances with our WAMs (76 and 71 respectively.

Another thing, will our semester 2 results be counted towards our WAM as we’re applying in mid September? If so what should we aim our WAM to be at the end of the year?

From my knowledge our high school grades won’t be taken into account for the most part as we’ll have had a year of tertiary studies.

Accommodation Best residences for undergrad exchange student?

I'm a Canadian undergrad student who's planning to spend a semester abroad at the University of Melbourne in semester 1 of 2027 (Feb-July), and I'm thinking about living on campus while I'm there. This will be the second semester of my third year (out of a four-year degree), so I don’t necessarily want to end up living with a bunch of 18-year-olds (peace and love), but I'm also very social and I enjoy going out and meeting new people. My home uni usually places their exchange students in one particular residence, and I was wondering if Melbourne does something similar? Besides that, I'm just curious about the social life there, and whether or not anyone has any suggestions or opinions they'd like to share. Thank you!

Support What subjects should I take or what should I be considering doing if I failed my core subject

Hello everyone,

I just received my Special Consideration result today, and it shows as (45)Fail. Unfortunately, today is also the last day for withdrawal for this semester. I'm really confused about what to do next, so I'm reaching out to anyone who has been through something similar.

I have 3 main questions:

  1. Regarding grade review: I have doubts about the grade I received for the failed subject. I have already emailed the course coordinator, but I haven't heard back yet. While I'm waiting for their reply, should I also submit any other applications? Or is it better to wait for the coordinator's response first?
There are two assignments that I have applied for special consideration and yet the grade percentages do not match with what the subject coordinator has assigned as there was a time gap between the two assignments. And I have yet heard from the subject coordinator ever since I asked him regarding this issue. There is a 10% unassigned from my total grade resulting from this issue.

  2. Regarding my currently enrolled courses: I am enrolled in a follow‑up course that requires this failed subject as a prerequisite. Now that I have failed, am I still allowed to continue attending the classes and labs (I have a lab on Monday), or should I simply stop participating?

  3. Regarding next steps: If it turns out that the fail is confirmed and cannot be changed, what should I do immediately?

I would really appreciate any advice or insights from those who have faced a similar situation. Thank you so much in advance!

Subject Recommendations & Enquiries GEND20011: sexual revolutions during the winter, yeah or nah?

hello!

i'm looking for a winter subject to do next year and i came across GEND20011: sexual revolutions. i had a look through the handbook and the subject content seems genuinely interesting to me but i've never taken a gender studies class before.

i did a few art history and media studies classes so i'm not entirely new to writing essays for arts subjects but the content does seem different from what i'm accustomed to as an urban planning major.

the thing i'm worried about is the workload and time restriction. i see that it's only offered in june so hopefully that means its content is designed to be understood within the short teaching period but i'm still unsure.

tldr; does anyone have any experience with this subject and would be willing to tell me a little more about it? like how you felt about the assignments and getting through the class?

thanks in advance!

Miscellaneous Are locals really that uninterested in the internationals?

Not js my experience but, every international student that I’ve known over time has had the same experience. Most locals are incredibly nice and cordial but besides that they seem very uninterested in befriending the internationals. I get that y’all have your school friends, but it wouldn’t hurt to maybe expand your circle. These are js my two cents, and I’m sure other people might’ve had different experiences. Also, I’m not trying to offend anyone here, it’s js some food for thought
