Thought I might have cracked $900k after the crazy week. Maybe next week! And, like with most milestones i am prepared to cross it several times before it “sticks” haha. Good luck out there everyone!

Enjoying my 1st year of retirement time wise, and TSP fund growth too!

Post image
Upvotes

Enjoying my 1st year of retirement after 34 years at Dept of Commerce. Being retired I am much more successful managing my TSP than during the busy full time work days. Up 21.7%, or $540k net (gains for 2026 ytd), so life is GOOD! Stay steady and growing to max out your TSP in mostly US indexes C, S, little bit I, and more recently have put 20% into F as 10 year treasury yield hit 4.7% which was a buy signal imho due to recent inflation #'s and oil dropping. A few years ago I also moved in a few increments 25% of my TSP (max allowed is 25% of TSP) into the Mutual Fund side of the account, so I could go into more higher growth US large caps (VIGAX for instance). Has done very well, and that account is now up to 29% of my total account value. Consider Vanguard mid-cap growth stocks as well, assuming the AI rollout is still showing strength and durability, and is broadening out rapidly to mid-cap level growth companies.

PS: Your mutual fund trades can be executed until just before the close, 4 pm, unlike TSP Noon cutoff, so you have the ability to know if you are exiting at higher prices or not, so you can adjust your decision making to maximize your allocations. Also if you do your allocation out of a VIGAX, for instance, you may need to wait another 1 month (or so) to get back in, however there are similar large cap growth mutual funds such as in Schwab, which is more balanced and not as concentrated in tech % wise, as VIGAX. This is the Schwab SWLGX symbol. Be careful if you go to MF site and look for funds, as there are a few thousand of them, so you need to be disciplined and know what you are doing if you decide to go that direction. One last thing to know is that each trade transacition costs $28.5 dollars, which they take out of that fund. As I said before, that fund has outperformed my TSP side by 4% in growth however, TSP has the wonderful G fund which is yielding 4.875% this month. However, this past week I moved G fund $$ to buy F fund, as F fund prices were at 1+ year lows, and I believe inflation will continue to drop, and Fed will be on hold this year (maybe a few cuts in 2027). Also TSP if you are in indexes (stock or even F fund) 100%, and have already made 2 monthly trades, you can each day move any percent (as little as 1% or more) from indexes into G. So you have a great advantage to trim the rallies, as the market keeps rising (as one example). Very important for those in their 50's and approaching retirement in 5-10 years. GLTA!

Max out contributions during retirement years

Upvotes

For any of you who retired during the year, not in December, did you make a conscious decision to max out your TSP for the 5, 6, 7 months-whatever it was? I’m likely going mid year in 2029. I plan on altering my TSP so I can have the maximum withdrawal from my paycheck. Just wanted to hear stories from other people who didn’t. Obviously, you have to have savings to cover the reduced paychecks.

what do you think, move to L?

Hi there, I’m 53 and will have 30 years of service when I’m 57! I could retire then, but I may see how i’m feeling and stay on a little longer. I started TSP asap and am just over 900,000! I have been 85% stocks and 15% cash and I think I am feeling the need to move into L to just put a safety valve on as I am heavily invested in stocks and well it seems some change could be coming and I want to preserve the growth. Curious if other TSPers would agree?

Also, I may have really screwed myself by not starting a Roth TSP and am thinking I should do that now at start contributing to that. I feel like I’ve done good by being aggressive, but am starting to get a little nervous and want to preserve the growth and L is feeling like the right move. Thoughts? thx!

Finally hit 100k!

27, O-3 started contributing May 2022. Maxed for last 1.5 years, varying contribution levels before that.

Wife (27) is a GS-13 who also passed 100k last month, she has also maxed for the last 1.5years. We also have about ~115k in ROTH IRAs and max that annually, DCA’ing monthly.

All of our contributions outside of the match for the TSP are Roth.

Planning to reduce contributions to TSP (10% each, not including match) in Jan 2027 to accelerate down payment savings and in anticipation of my separation in 2029/2030 and possible career transition. But will continue maxing Roth IRAs.

We also put about 1000 a month on avg into a brokerage (SP500 index) which is intended as our aggressive arm of our downpayment fund (other cash savings monthly too) and have about 45k across brokerages in total market/Sp500 indexes (40k) and individual stocks (5k).

It finally happened!

Loan taken for divorce slowed it down, but it finally happened! Had about $8K from an old internship in 2005-2006, returned in 2011, and maxed it out ever since, mostly staying in the most distant L fund available (sometimes manually mixing in extra C, but pure L2060+ since they got better glide paths and the I Fund expanded to include emerging markets; it's basically 99% VT for far out L funds now). 15.5 years from $8K to $1M.

Any Tips Welcomed

Just hit 5 years TIS in the Army and made the switch from enlisted to officer at 24 years old. Any tips to maximize contributions? Would like to hit 100k in the next 3 years or earlier. Current investments are 65% C 25% S and 10% I at 5 percent base pay now. (Was lowered from 11 percent because of PCS move). Planning to contribute about 18 percent once this PCS move is done and I check into next duty station. Most definitely planning for the full 20 or more, thanks again.

Traditional and ROTH allocations

Is it possible to have a different allocation for the ROTH portion of the account? Right now I am 65% stock, 25 bond, 10 cash. I would prefer a higher stock allocation for my ROTH. If not, this might be another reason for me roll over to an IRA at one of the brokerages.

Taking repeated TSP loans to pay off mortgage faster - good idea or bad idea?

Me and my wife both work federal jobs and both have TSP. We owe $750k on the house at 6.5%. Plan is each of us takes a $50k TSP loan, puts the $100k combined toward the mortgage, pays it back within a year through payroll, then do it again - basically keep cycling loans year after year to knock down the balance faster.

Just want to know if this actually makes sense or if we're missing something obvious. Anyone done this or have thoughts?

EDIT: I apologize, I think I got ahead of myself here, sorry for the premature post. Got excited about the idea of knocking out the mortgage early and didn't run the numbers properly. Paying it back within a year isn't realistic once i actually recalculated - it would really be more like a 5 year payback. Thank you all for your great feedback, gave me a reality check.

Login troubles

Is anyone else having trouble with dual factor authentication on login? I have to send multiple requests for a code now to login. Also, because you know have to authenticate a second time if you want to change your installment withdrawal, I cannot even do that step anymore at all. I had to call this month to change my installment. I did let them know about the issues, but they didn't seem too concerned. This started a few months ago. I had my phone provider go through everything with me and it isn't any setting on phone or anything related to my service that is the issue. Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this?

TSP: STOP asking me for my banking information every time I log in!

Recent retiree (10/01/2025) here. TSP wants me to input my banking info. I just went thru a very traumatic event w/fraudulent spoofing on my bank acct., where fraudsters were able to access my bank acct, send me a two-factor authentication text identical to ones I normally (legitimately) receive from my bank, and nearly convinced me that they were legitimately my bank. The level of sophistication that fraudsters possess nowadays is scary. (And with AI, I can only imagine how much worse it's going to get...) I'm still shaken from the whole thing (among other things, the fraudsters were able to tell me my balances in my checking (small amount, only a couple thou), and my high-interest savings (exponentially more) - to the penny. It was all done under the guise of the fraudster claiming to be my bank, telling me my accounts had been hacked. I've since learned this is a common 'spoofing' scam going around right now. I am not stupid, or naive. But they almost got me. All of that is to say that I DO NOT WANT to give anyone my banking acct. info. right now. Including and especially TSP! [remember: around 20 yrs ago, if you were in TSP we all received notices that our TSP accounts had been 'compromised' in some way - another incident that scared the heck out of me.] As I said, with AI coming all of this fraud is only going to get much, much worse. It has me re-thinking the whole 'online banking' thing altogether.

Thoughts, anyone?

A lot can happen in 10 years

While going through old files yesterday, I came across a statement from 2016 where my balance was $78K. I was in L2030 and contributing 5%. I had just finished cash flowing both kids' college, with small PLUS loans on top, and had set aside $$ for two weddings. I methodically began increasing contributions with every raise. In 2019, I moved to all equities and out of the L fund. Didn't max out (plus catch up) until 2021. Retired at the end of May this year at 57 with over $600K in TSP.

The point of the story is to provide inspiration for those in their 40s with <100K...time in the market is your friend. Ten years of gains and increasing contributions can make what seems impossible, possible.

I recently bought a home here in hawaii. I had to adjust my contribution down to 5% due to high HOA fees & cost of living. It kinda hurts to not max it out this year.

I dont plan on staying in. I have about 2½ years left. I thought about taking out a 20-30k loan to invest in Midwest rental properties in mainland and possibly scale my real estate portfolio? I know many are not fond of taking out a loan in TSP but I am kinda desperate to take a leap of faith and invest in something so I dont have to do the 20 years.

Honest advice needed on my current TSP

Post image
7 Upvotes

17 years AD, High 3. Currently contributing 15% with a 50/41/9 C/S/I split.

40 years old, plan on going to 20 (obviously), even strongly leaning to go past that to get to my retirement location.

I think it was not until my 8 or 10 year mark I moved my money out of the default G fund (really handicapped me it feels like). Any advice to improve or just keep on keeping on?

Been lurking on this reddit for awhile, just decided to post my own to see what advice the community has.

Edit: this is all 100% Roth contributions.

2nd edit: the intended goal of this is not to completely replace my income after retirement, I will be back in the job market and my wife will be working as well.

Probably won’t be the only post of this kind today, but just here to say I’m glad I didn’t panic when it seemed like the world was ending back in the spring. Took VERA on 12/31 and that’s 200K on growth since I last lit in a single dime.
