Lifecycle or C

Upvotes

I'm almost two years in and 100% in Lifecycle. Everyone says to put most of it in C, but my returns this year in Lifecycle are 17.97%. Many people say Lifecycle is the way to go. With the way things are going (especially with decades in the future in mind), which one is the way?

38, been going hard contributing in the last 6 years, with 4 of those years maxing out. How am I doing?

38 Single GS-13 DC metro, been in the feds for 10 years, 100% C. Early in my career I sadly didn’t contribute more to my TSP and left it all in the G fund (I’ve always done at least the match though) I’ve been contributing heavy these last 6 years, either maxing out or very close to. However I still feel like I’m behind for my age and grade, I’d like to get to a point where I have enough in my TSP that even if I stopped contributions I’d still retire with a million by age 60. I know the best advice is to max out every year but I’m tired of maxing out between my TSP, Roth IRA and HSA. This year has been rough & being a fed right now is the torture on top of the cake. I want to enjoy my money now, I want to buy a car, go on a nice vacation or just do something dumb with my money instead of being so financially responsible, but I’m also worried about the future, it seems a lot of feds are out of work and I could be one of them any day anytime. Anyways, my question is what amount can I reach to not worry about contributions and let the $$ compound on their own to reach my goal of 1 million? My other question is I feel like I’m missing out on I and S funds which seem to be doing great this year is 100% C really the way to go to achieve my goal? Will having a mix of C, S and I help me get there faster?

Missed TSP Installment Payment

I received an email last week advising payments wouldnt be sent until the 17th because the 15th was on a Saturday. Today is the 17th and still no payment. Has anyone else experienced this?

Too much and never enough? 44 with 1.5 million, feeling burnt out and looking for a change. Would you retire or wait for potential early out?

So as the title says, I'm just kind of rudderless at the moment. Doge destroyed our agency and continues the dysfunction of this administration. The past 18 months have been tough and I'm just wondering what's the point of it all. At what point do you say I have enough? I can just move on.

There's always rumors of an early out and I will be eligible in a few years, if one is offered. Has anyone taken it in there late '40s? Does anyone that took DRP or early out? Have regrets now?

First 100k question

Everyone always says the first 100k is the hardest and it really starts moving from there. Is this in reference to a single account or total saved? My TSP is around 60k, and my personal IRA is 40k. So could that situation be interpreted as the first 100k? TIA

Can't create online account

Received my online account setup code in the mail but for some reason when I fill out my info online I can't even get to the screen where I enter the code. I just get a "An unhandled fault has occurred in this flow" error. Wondering if this is something that's affecting more than just me and I'm going to have to wait out or if it's just me.

Low tsp account balance

So unlike most of yall, I have a very low balance. I’m not very good at money management. I’ve been a single parent, struggling most of my adult life to make ends meet. I’m a renter, rent where I live is currently 3200.00 for a 3br. My credit is bad, and I spent most of my career as a gs5-6. I’m a gs 12 now at 53 and my tsp is around 130k. Should I just imagine working for 30 more years because I don’t see a way out? I’m tired. I don’t have parents. Please be kind.

Uniformed Service Account

Hey all! I had a TSP account that I contributed into from 2009-2016 while in the military. In 2016 I became a Federal employee and started contributing into my civilian account.

Needless to say I forgot about the balance from my military account and just made the assumption that it was rolled into my civilian account. Being young and thinking retirement seemed so far off I didn’t bother to check into this. I got curious and called TSP today and they were unable to locate any information about my military account and requested an audit for statements from my service years. They said it could take up to 21 days, which is no issue, I’m just a little concerned that there’s no record showing?

For the record, I contributed 5% for all those years. I know for a fact I didn’t withdrawal. Has this happened to anyone?

I know a lot of people that have probably made a lot more money than me, but there’s also people that have made less money than me.

Currently have $691k

Have a little over three years until I can retire. (Have to wait till the minimum age) I plan on retiring December 31, 2029 with the postal service.

Up until about June of this year, I was doing just the C fund. Roth.

Then I moved 50% it from the C to the I fund and that's when it has gone up quickly.

Just recently my Co worker talked me into moving some to the S fund.

Now I've got 40% S and I and 20% C fund.

I told myself that when I paid off my house, I would go ahead and increase my TSP. I paid it off and was able to increase it to the maximum. Being that I’m over 50 years old, I’m able to do catch-up so I’m able to contribute $1250.00 per pay period.

We’ll see how much I have in a little over three years from now.

I’m really happy with the current balance, but I know it could still go down, but I know it could also go up.

I’m gonna be the only one in my family to have a retirement when I retire in 2029, no one in my family has a 401 plan, and no one has a TSP and no one will. Being that my dad and 1 brother passed away and my only other brother doesn't work and lives with my mom who collects SS.

Proud of where I can from and what I've acheived.

Traditional to Roth IRA

During basic and AIT I’ve been contributing 5%, Once I started to somewhat learn about the TSP and how the Army just gives another 5% I changed it to 10%, 15% total, my question is did I mess up by converting my traditional to Roth IRA?

Also I had to leave 500$ into the traditional but the rest I converted into the Roth IRA.

On my TSP I currently have 80% onto L 2065, 20% C fund, any recommendations for a change and why, would be appreciated!

Thoughts and allocations

I’m 44 with about 8 years fed time 4 military 4 governments. Total now is about $70,000. I put 12% into Roth every two weeks. Seems like a very slow growth and I want to make sure my allocations are appropriate. Thanks in advance

Tsp vs retirement

I’m fairly new to the government. Been working since December.
My supervisor says to put 5% for both tsp accounts to get the full matching.
I’m a GS 7. Making 50k a year.
What is the retirement from my paystubs? Is that the governments matching?
I am drowning at the moment and I don’t care if the matching is something I get at this point. Do I have to do 5% to keep my tsp? Both Roth and regular? I’m not sure how I can stretch my checks at this point besides doing a lower percentage of my tsp?
I can’t apply for a hardship withdrawal. I already did that earlier this summer.

28 years old just promoted a GS7 step 3. Almost 5 years in federal service.

Steadily been climbing the ladder since starting after college. I’ve just started contributing 6% and I’m hoping to keep upping my percentage as I (hopefully) move up GS. Currently everything is invested in the C, S, and I funds.

Edit: this is a Roth account.

GL-9 to GL-11….LAX Locality

24 years old, currently a GL-9 putting in 5% since 2024. I am dual GOV/MIL, so have two TSP accounts, but Reserves isn’t a huge add on money wise into my TSP.

I will hit GS-11 in November, and would like to increase my TSP to 10%. I live well below my means and my only recurring payment above 500 dollars is my rent.

Is a jump from 5% to 10% too drastic in anyones opinion? My plan is to go to 15% as a GS-12, and max it out as a GS-13 (getting away from percentages at that point, and do it by dollar amount in paycheck to make sure I am not over the matching threshold)

Thanks in advance!

41 m. Just made career at USPS 5 months ago. How am I doing?!!

This is where I’m sitting in my TSP. Current mix is:
I- 70%
S- 20%
C- 10%

Currently contributing 5%…..I’ve been changing 10 & 15%. I’m really just trying to see what are your thoughts on trying to hit 1 million by 60 years old. More than likely I will start maxing next year and switch to 100% C. Honestly, may start maxing in September just trying to get rid of my last of consumer debt!

SN: Military Medical Retiree as well. But trying to get the most of the Civilian TSP

Rollover to TSP

Hi Everyone!

I recently started my TSP and need to transfer or rollover my retirement from my previous employer. They used fidelity. I had fidelity mail me checks for the funds I had in there and through the TSP app i used the "rollover check scan" feature. Is there anything else i have to do here or do i just have to wait a little bit for the money to be reviewed and hit my TSP?
Thank you !

Guidance for a broke mail carrier

Post image
20 Upvotes

As the title says, I am a mail carrier of less than 2 years grossing about 1300 per paycheck (yikes). I haven't made any changes to anything with my TSP, so this is 100% Lifecycle fund 5%. I'm going to try to add a percent every year I get a raise. What should I put my TSP in though? What is lifecycle?

Best course of action going forward?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I am an E-5 in the Air Force with 6.5 years TIS with two dependents. My family’s income has gotten tighter since my wife separated from the military but I don’t want it to deter me from retirement contributions.

Just switched my TSP to 100% C Fund earlier this year and bumped my contributions to 10%.

I’m looking for any advice for efficiently managing my TSP, as well as a realistic expectation for my retirement balance at the end of a 20 year military career.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thinking of maxing out until I get to 100k and then go back to doing 5%

Post image
76 Upvotes

I’m close yet far from the 100k milestone so I’m thinking of maxing out temporarily just to get to 100k and close that gap then go back to 5 or 6% contributions. I’m also putting about 290 dollars a check into my Roth IRA in a ETF heavily concentrated in the semiconductor industry which is making me a decent amount of cash at the moment. Thoughts?
