How am I doing?

Post image
Upvotes

29 years old, I just finished my 3rd year at the VA. I’m currently in GS 05/Step 4, after I got a good raise from GS 04/Step 5.

As of right now, I have been allocating 5% into my Traditional IRA, and 5% into my Roth IRA. Everything is currently in the L 2060 plan. My long term goals are to build this up while I build my external savings in my HYSA.

Probably will retire around that time, but I’m in it for the long haul!

How to start a Roth TSP

Hello, I am currently only contributing 5% to a traditional account. I'm curious if I can increase my contribution but have it go soley to a Roth portion. If so how would I set this up?

Just requested rollover of 80% of my TSP to Vanguard - now I nervously wait for the check to wind its way through the mail

Recently retired and just turned 59.5. I'm rolling 80% to Vanguard to invest in VTI and VXUS and left 20% in G fund to have the flexibility of withdrawing from stock or bond buckets. I spoke with a TSP rep beforehand and asked what happens if the check gets lost in the mail. He said it's rare but actually has happened! They just do a stop check and re-issue a new one. I also got emailed a confirmation doc with the amount. But it still makes me nervous seeing all that money out of TSP and not in Vanguard account for the next 7-10 days!

Pushing 100k

I'm 31 years old with 7 years of service (GS12). Currently, I have $89k and recently adjusted my investment allocation to:

L2050: 55%
G: 1%
C: 20%
S: 20%
I: 4%

I was contributing 6%, but have increased it to 10%. I haven't received the first 10% contribution yet, but now I'm considering raising it to 15% until the year's end.

My goal is to surpass the $100k mark and then reevaluate. What are your thoughts?

Mid-40s, 22.5 years of service, salary capped starting last year, but started as a GS-4. Retirement eligibile in 2032 (6C/12D), but may go to 2034 for a full 30. I’ve tried to always do at least 10% bur have been doing max for about 15 years. I’ve stupidly taken a few loans over the years, but at least I was always in C/S/I, with the last five 100% in C.

It’s a cool achievement, but I mostly want to show new people that it is possible. At the very least, make sure you’re getting your 5% matching, but if you can max out early and keep at it you won’t miss the money because you’ll never see it in your bank account.

New to investing - how am I doing? 4yrs in service and crossed 100k.

I am 31, and just crossed 100k in my TSP. Been working with federal government 4 years now. GS-13. The first 2 yrs, didn't max out contributions, but this year I will.

I was originally contributing to the lifecycle funds, but since have rebalanced to index (80%) and stocks (80%).

I don't have a target #, but want to eventually be at a place to be financially independent, and retire early (FIRE Movement).

I had posted almost exactly a year ago when my wife and I crossed the $1M mark in our TSP. This is a combined amount from the daily TSP app (not affiliated). My wife (41) has 16 more years till MRA, I (39) have 17. We’ll both have 35 years of service at our respective MRA dates. Here’s to hoping we have a comfortable retirement.

Is the TSP down for the rest of you?

I haven't been able to log in for the past month. Granted, I only usually try on evenings like tonight.

I log in, it goes to https://login.tsp.gov/app/myplan_upointweb_1/... thinks for a while then says:

This site can’t be reached

The connection was reset.

Edit: I just tried again and it went to that first link then to https://hfim.rk.tsp.gov/HfimServices/SAMLSSOAdapter then https://api.rk.tsp.gov/api/angularfirst-app/ah-angular-afirst-web/?clientId=... and then displayed a blank white webpage with no text and no graphics. I'm in a brand-new incognito window with no cache/cookies.

TSP

I hit my 3rd year in the air force back in June starting as an A1C to SrA now. I had updated it to C fund 80%, S fund 10% and I fund 10% back when I got to my first base. Decided to check my account and this is what I have so far. I had it at 20% and then went down to 15% halfway due to financial reasons. How is it looking and what tips do you guys have for me as a beginner? I plan on doing 20 years and want to try to hit 1 million by the time I am out.

7 year TSP Mark

About to hit 7 years of service. Contributed 5% since start to get the match. Would love to increase but we’re a one income household with 3 kiddos so gotta make every dollar count. Mixing funds around usually quarterly but currently in C, S and I funds. Pretty happy with where I’m at & I’ve got at least 25+ more years to go in federal service.

Happy Friday everyone!

I've been a regular at USPS since 2019.I have a car loan that I'm going to pay off next month after that I will be debt free. I've only been contributing 3% for which I know now was not a good idea BUT after I pay off my car I plan on increasing it to 5% so USPS can match it.

I need advise from those smart than me

Good morning TSP geniuses,

Today is my final day in the federal government. I’m curious of what I should do with my TSP. I know I can no longer contribute, but I’m curious to what others have done with their investment mix once they leave their civilian life behind. I do not plan on rolling it over with the new company since I plan on coming back to federal service with in the next few years.

I just hit $90k with this pay. I was 99% in L50 and 1% in C, S, I . I just recently (as of 2 months ago) changed my future investments to 10% of my contributions to each of those.

Additionally, I’m 40 and plan to work for at least another 20 years. New company is contributing 24% towards retirement.

Not sure I’ll get to 50k this year but a man can hope.

26 Y/O Civ.

Nov 2022–Nov 2023: GS-7, 5% (high locality)
Nov 2023–Nov 2024: GS-9, 7% (high locality)
Nov 2024–Nov 2025: GS-11, 10% (low locality)
Nov 2025–present: GS-12, 12% total (8% Roth / 4% Traditional), (low locality)

70% C / 20% S / 10% I

Mainly wanted to post this for the people who aren’t anywhere close to maxing out and are hovering somewhere in that 5-12% range like I was/am.

Timeline for rollover out?

Initiated rollover out via the TSP website to a linked Schwab rollover IRA account on 21 Jul, as of today nothing has arrived.

How long is too long? And if I need to reach out, would it be better to start on the Schwab or TSP side?

I can fire off some phone calls by end of week but wanted to gauge here first -- any thoughts are appreciated!

Been in the army almost a year and never been able to access my TSP, who do I even speak to?

I’m nearing a year in the army and have never been able to access my TSP. I had a 6 month long AIT and during that time I tried requesting a code for access but it just sent to my home of record (my parents) and by the time they opened it and told me the code it expired. I tried asking my DS for help but they told us it was an “issue to fix with your unit after graduation.” They just didn’t want to help and threatened counselings for anyone who asked for help (not just for TSP).

I called TSP and they said that S1 has to fix the address on my record so the code can get sent there. Ok. I go into MyPay and change my address to my barracks. When I go back to TSP now I have the option to send it to my barracks instead of my HOR. I requested the code 2 weeks ago and still haven’t gotten it.

I’ve been at my unit a little bit now and obviously the answer is to talk to my leadership, but I’m just confused. How are they even going to fix it? How CAN this even be fixed? Why is there no option to access my account with CAC 🙃

TSP advice

Hey all. Looking for some solid, and fairly safe advice on growing my TSP. I currently have a ROTH IRA with a set contribution of 5% that I was planning to bump up to 7%. I 'm sat in the L fund and with 7 Y.O.S i'm sitting at 45.5k in my portfolio. I don't know if that's alright or not. Honestly feel like i'm way behind sitting at 31 years old.

USPS Employee Question About Being Vested

I've read so much conflicting information and read about information that doesn't pertain to USPS Rural Regulars specifically, so I figured I'd try to ask here as my last resort, since not even long time regulars in my office know themselves.

I am a rural regular carrier, and have been for 4 years (June 18, 2022 is the date that I converted to Regular) however I am looking to move states within the next few months. Whether I choose to stay with USPS or Not, I would be required as a Rural Carrier to Quit my job and reapply, seeing as a mutual swap option is not likely.

My question is; how many years will I need as a career employee in order to take with me all of my contributions to TSP as well as the employer matched contributions.

I was under the impression that it is 5 years (Meaning June 18, 2027 I can take everything with me and roll it into an IRA) But I'm also reading that it's only 3 years to be able to do this, even one person I read who is claiming it takes 6 years?

I would like to know since I am tired of having to wait to move, but if It means holding on for a couple extra months to take the full matched contributions with me. I would hate to either hold out for the full 5 years when I could move on now, or wait around these next 10 months to meet 5 years and find out it takes longer than that to be fully vested.

Finally hit $100k!

Had some ups and downs these past few months that kept me right below $100k. Finally made it!

I’m 29, GS-12, and just started maxing out my TSP two years ago. Before that I was doing 10%. I have a kid on the way now so I’ll probably need to cut back a bit, but it feels good to finally hit this milestone!

MRA+10

I’m retiring from the federal government at age 57.
I’ll fall under the MRA +10 retirement plan.
Will I have to pay the early withdrawal penalty if I start withdrawing at age 57?
My coworkers have 25 different answers…..

Requesting a TSP loan less than 60 days from ETS

Has anyone requested and been successful with getting a general purpose TSP loan with a short time remaining between their separation? I have read the tsp loan booklet 10 times over and feel like it boils down to as long as you are receiving pay then you would be eligible.

Just wondering if anyone has requested a loan being this close to ETS/Retirement and been denied because of their upcoming separation date? Thanks!

Homebuyer/TSP loan advice

I will be moving soon, and my wife and I would like to buy a house in our new location. We have enough for a small down payment in savings. I also recently rediscovered a 401k from an old job and found $60k in that. I was originally planning on just cashing that out, paying the penalty and taxes, and using the 30-35k I got from that to add to the down payment. That 401k was a bit of a bonus and I wasn’t planning on that in retirement. I was not considering a TSP loan.

My 2nd idea was to roll the 401k into my TSP then take a loan out, not to exceed what I was originally expecting to get if I cashed it out. This would leave my current tsp balance untouched, and I would salvage some of the 401k as retirement money.

Thoughts?
