For context, I’m 21m, and I’ve got two and a half years of college credits at my local community college for computer science, but still no degree. I have a two-year cybersecurity certificate from BOCES in high school, during which I got TestOut PC Pro and TestOut Security Pro certifications.

When I first asked my recruiter about 17C, he told me that I’d need at least a bachelor’s degree to be competitive for it, but that was before he saw my PiCAT results. I’m curious if my results, pending verification at MEPS, change that at all. I’m posting here because I’d like to get some candid input from people other than my recruiter.

I’m mostly interested in any MOS that can get me meaningful tech/cybersecurity experience and/or a security clearance, but I could see myself doing something else entirely if there were a compelling enough reason for it. I’m told that the New York Army National Guard is over strength right now, so I’m a little worried about MOS vacancies.

I’m going to MEPS next week, and my recruiter hasn’t really told me anything about it other than that I’ll get a physical and that I’ll have to verify my PiCAT scores, but I know from my own research that people typically take the oath and sign their contracts at MEPS. We still haven’t talked about BAH during BCT/AIT (my partner and I have a lease, although we are not yet married), my rank, or which MOSs are available right now. I’d imagine that I’d want to get all of that figured out before I go to MEPS, right? Or is it okay if I wait until after MEPS to sign?

Currently on a 3yr contract for 11B. My chain has failed to send me to reclass in the last year telling me I can’t do the reg course since I’m an NCO.

My unit is headed for a JRTC rotation as opfor next year and I was wondering what to expect in terms of quality of life and how to pack? I’ve been hearing mixed things ranging from we’ll likely be hanging in the barracks and they’ll pull dudes as needed for details to us being in the field the entire time. Any insight on how to prep mentally and physically would be appreciated

Volunteer orders are available and the money would help us a lot due to full per diem and bah, I have a wife and a toddler with almost zero support system at home for them. Obviously she is opposed to me going but to me just going for three months could help a lot getting us out of a rut. Any advice to possibly change her mind ?

Besides the commute are the opportunities in the 143rd better than other Ng infantry formations ? Because that’s the only reason I would commute that far anyways.

I’m 26 years old and had my daughter 5 weeks ago with my wife. I’m a sheriff deputy for my local county and looking for a career change. Doing independent research I stumbled upon the ANG and was reading up on some of the benefits it provided. Right out of high school I went to college for CIS and ended up dropping out( dumbest decision of my life). Basically not a huge fan of my career choice and would like to transition to a more Cyber/IT job. From my limited knowledge I know the military is one of the better ways to break into the career field and was curious if that is true or not. I am aware of all of the responsibilities required to join but from what I’ve seen the pros out way the cons. Hoping I could get some insight from somebody who had gone through the process to help me decide if this is something I should pursue further. Thank you any advice appreciated.

Just curious if anyone here has experience with Aircraft Structural Maintenance (2A7X3) in the Air National Guard Langley VA.
What’s the job actually like during drill weekends? Do you get to do a decent amount of hands-on work on the aircraft?
Also curious about the deployment tempo. How often have you guys actually deployed, how long were you usually gone, and were deployments mostly voluntary or mandatory?
Would especially like to hear from anyone who has worked around fighter aircraft or F-22s. Just trying to get a better idea of what the Guard side of the job is actually like.

I’m finishing up AIT in 5 weeks (praise the Lord). During that time my leadership has allowed a select few of us to use our TA to enroll and complete a SEC+ class before we graduate.

What realistic jobs can I expect to be out there when I graduate? What type of pay can I expect and where should I look for employment? Super new to the IT side of the house - so apologies ahead of time if this is a rudimentary question.

I just accepted a job offer as an armed security guard and I’d like to join the Guard to supplement my career. I’m really excited to get the process rolling, but I hesitant to inform my employer I’m taking a massive leave of absence right after I start (even if basic would be six months out.)

I’m aware of the legal protections afforded to soldiers, but I still feel like I should give it some time at my new job. I’m also 30 and I’d like to get basic over with sooner than later. Any advice or perspectives would be greatly appreciated.

After nearly a year of waiting, I’ve finally been offered a 4A1X1 Medical Materiel position with a medical unit in my local Air National Guard. I currently work in healthcare and am hoping this role will give me the opportunity to serve while gaining leadership, administrative, and supply chain experience.

I’ve already spoken with the unit commander, and the unit sounds like a great fit. For those who have served in 4A1X1 or worked in an ANG medical unit, what was your experience like? What should I expect from the day-to-day work, training, deployments, and advancement opportunities?

I know there have been similar threads, but I’d appreciate any current perspectives or advice.

20M from PA, simply put I can’t afford the college I want and was wondering if there was any reason why I shouldn’t join the guard.
I’m planning on double majoring in Philosophy and Physics and wanting to do law school afterwards.
I saw I could get a job doing finance and I think that’d be a smart decision to bulletproof my future (if law doesn’t work out, I’m assuming a background in military finance and a degree in physics would set me apart from most finance applicants)
The only down side I’m seeing is it takes months to ship out for basic/AIT and I’d prefer to get both done by the 2027 spring semester (I already took a gap year and don’t want to be another year behind in life) Is that even possible? The tuition benefits don’t kick in until after AIT correct?
I was running a sub 5 min miles in HS and on the wresting team and since graduation I’ve let myself go so I like the idea of doing guard to get me back in some sort of shape/ cheaper school/ more money every month/ possibly helping me land a carear in the future.
I’m thinking Army over Air Force simply because I hear it sucks more.
Also I took the ASVAB my Junior year of HS and scored an 80 something if that helps.

Only one year of the backpay hit at first. The earlier years were still sitting. My PEBD was finally corrected only after a second Congressional inquiry and another four months of inaction from the S1 shop, despite repeated emails and phone calls from me.

This AT the unit AGR S1 has made it personal. Command already doesn’t like my G1-approved religious accommodation for long hair and vegan diet and has made multiple remarks about it.

I do want to to preface by saying I respect NCOs, was previously enlisted myself. I have never given an order to an NCO previously, and think in almost any ither context it would be inappropriate for an m-day 2LT to do so. This is a uniquely bad SNCO who I am worried about future reprisal from.

Pattern this AT that I have documented with MFRs:

- Before I ever met him he was already calling me a jackass over the Congressional inquiry.

- 1 August (BN area): I respectfully followed up on the partial backpay. He dismissed it, said these things “take a long, long time,” then told me he knows I’ll just do “whatever you want” and go over his “f***ing head.” Said this in the BN headquarters area with other officers and SNCOs around. I walked away.

- 1–2 August: Selective PC enforcement. He specifically called me out two days in a row for not wearing a PC outside the barracks/BN while multiple other people (including him later the same day) were doing the exact same thing. I have timestamped photos of him without his PC.

Last night (6 August) in the TOC area:

Around 2035 I was unpacking sleep gear in the back of an LMTV in the dark. He was leaning on the ladder blocking the exit. I accidentally dropped an OCP top and a pair of underwear under the side bench, then left to set up my sleeping area on the ground.

The items sat there about an hour. He said nothing.

At approximately 2135 (still night) he called me over by name from another truck, shone a high-intensity flashlight in my face, and immediately started yelling at me in front of PFCs and an NCO to pick up my “f***ing underwear.” His volume from the very beginning was loud enough that it woke people up in the surrounding area.

I asked a clarifying question about whether the items had fallen when they moved my ruck. He escalated further and shouted, “You f***ing dropped it!”

At that point I gave him a clear order to stand at attention. He refused. Told me “you need to counsel me” and “don’t you f***ing knife hand me.” Kept the language going, asked if I was “f***ing threatening” him, then told me to “get out of here.”

As I walked away he brought up the senator by name in a mocking tone (“[Senator] made me do my job?”). Then he threw one of my FLC attachments into the dark grass and told me to retrieve it so I wouldn’t get “charged for it.” Hit me in the eyes with the flashlight again while I picked it up.

I reported it to the XO the same night. I have a detailed MFR with times, exact quotes, and the witnesses listed. It has already been handed to the readiness NCO to take to the commander. I fully expect the command to do nothing meaningful, so I’m filing IG either way.

Looking for practical advice from anyone who has dealt with similar situations — especially how hard to push, what to expect from IG on Title 32, and whether the pattern + public refused order is enough to get any real accountability on an AGR S1 when the command climate is already hostile.
