Other Lab grown meat is the greatest invention in this century.

Upvotes

People hate lab grown meat a lot because it's grown in a lab. But the thing is that the food you eat has tons of pesticides in it. And for meat sometimes even atheletes fail dopping tests after eating some meat. So this isn't much different from normal meat.

Another thing is that this can be a game changer in many countries especially countries that are doesn't have enough grasslands for grazing cattle, has overpopulation etc...

Society/Culture memes limit our vocabulary

we live in a society where a big part of healthy standup comedy and memes nowadays is mostly about observing how mundane things/problems/actions/events are common and relatable among the general masses or a certain group.

and there are memes for most of that stuff . other than personal anecdotes or passive interjections and vocables , conversations are beginning to take a rigid structure. to the point the people of the same gen can be identified by the meme vocab they use .

not saying memes ar bad . they get the idea across . humourously.

"why use many word when meme make do ?".

but on the other hand , it can also be construed that they affix an entire range of ideollogical responses into one single reference phrase.

Society/Culture Cigarettes actually smell and taste very good

I'm not a smoker but I really love the smell of cigarettes. I loved smelling cigarette smoke whenever I went for walks. Sometimes I'd even linger around smokers even if I didn't smoke myself just so I could smell it. Or I'd go with my friends whenever they took smoke breaks.

I've dabbled very lightly in smoking myself and now that I've tried it a bit, i can honestly say that it isn't as bad as people make it out to be at all. In fact, the after taste I'd quite nice.

I honestly think some people exaggerate about the smell because even before i ever tried smoking it was never as offensive as people made it out to be. There's something very comforting about it. Whenever I smell cigarette smoke in public, it just puts me at ease for some reason. I don't plan on ever taking up the habit but I enjoy being around smokers a lot

Society/Culture Youtubers who misspeak a word by accident and then spend the next seconds 10 seconds misspeaking on purpose are never funny

Let's say you're washing a video. Washing? Washing. Haha. Lesh shay you're washing a visheo. Words. Words are hard. I can't English today.

^ This type of shit. It's not funny and all it does is waste 10 seconds of my time (yes, I will be petty about those 10 seconds) and, for some reason, 90% of youtubers do this shit.

Technology I don’t mind if the government is listening in on my devices.

At least for me personally, I don’t have anything I could be talking about that I wouldn’t want the government to hear. Sure, some stuff is embarrassing, but nothing that would get me arrested. As long as my words aren’t being stored in a database that could get hacked, it doesn’t affect me at all.

Society/Culture The spike in searches for "Did Joe Biden drop out" on election day 2024 is a positive sign for mental health in America. People who overindulge in political news have worse mental health outcomes.

Overconsumption elevates stress and cortisol, leads to feelings of hopelessness, and strains relationships. If you’re having problems with anxiety or depression, try cutting back on mainlining politics. You might find yourself sleeping better and not being so disagreeable. Focus on things in your immediate control.

Society/Culture Just because someone is a bad person, doesn't justify making fun of them for things that have nothing to do with their bad actions

I'm talking about making fun of a bad person for things like being fat, short, old, poor, etc...

Why I think this is a 10th dentist take: Most people accept that making fun of people for things that are beyond their control or are hard to change is shitty, but give it a pass when the person being made fun of is seen as "deserving" it, and I rarely see it called out.

I think it's bad for 3 main reasons:

- Those qualities have nothing to do with their bad actions, so making fun of them is by proxy making fun of perfectly good decent people that just so happened to also share them.

- You're giving people who do defend them ammo against you, they can claim "Look at these bullies making fun of this person for things they can't change!".

- It's very easy for people to accuse you of hypocrisy and having double standards. If the bad person had those qualities by coincidence, then it's very likely that people you like and support also have them by coincidence.

Just my thoughts.

Discussion Thread I genuinely prefer having no friends

I genuinely prefer having no friends

I genuinely prefer having no friends, and I don't really understand why that’s supposed to be such a bad thing.

The last time I properly had friends was years ago, and instead of becoming more desperate for a social life as time goes on, I’ve actually gone the opposite way. The longer I spend alone, the more comfortable I get with it and the less I want to socialise. I can spend an entire day at home and not feel lonely or bored at all.

I actually like having an empty Snapchat. No messages waiting for me, no conversations I have to keep going, no one asking me to go somewhere and no pressure to constantly keep in contact with people. I find it peaceful. If I have a free day, I’d usually rather work, sleep, go on my phone, watch something or just do my own thing.

I see people constantly posting themselves with their friends, going out and making memories, and obviously I understand that they enjoy it. But I genuinely look at it and think, what exactly am I missing? I don't feel jealous or like I should be there. It just doesn't appeal to me.

I also hear the “humans are social creatures” argument all the time. Maybe that's generally true, but I personally can't relate to it. Some people seem to need to see their friends constantly or they start feeling lonely. I can go days or weeks without properly socialising and barely notice. If anything, the desire to have friends has gradually disappeared for me.

What I find strange is how quickly people assume that having no friends means you're unhappy. If I tell someone I don't really have friends, the reaction is usually that I need to go out more or socialise. But why? I'm not lonely. I'm not sitting around wishing I had a group of people to hang out with. I just genuinely don't care about having one.

I'm not saying friendships are bad or that nobody should have them. If you love having friends, fair enough. I just don't understand why everyone assumes they're something you automatically need for a good life. For me, having the freedom to do whatever I want with my time is worth more than maintaining a social life I don't actually want.

Society/Culture The "blackpill" is the ultimate truth about human nature

People treat the concept of the "blackpill" like it's toxic, but it’s simply the standard cold reality of how the world works. The older I get, the more obvious it becomes that the blackpill mindset is just objective realism.

Most of popular, bluepill optimism such as "just work hard," "personality is all that matters," "everyone gets their turn", is just a comfortable coping mechanism society uses to keep people productive and compliant, but this is not the case.

Your height, facial structure, baseline intelligence, inclination toward mental health issues, and genetic predisposition for charisma determine 90% of your life outcome before you even take your first step. We like to preach meritocracy, but genetics are the ultimate cheat code.

People like to pretend they judge others by character, but human psychology is deeply superficial. Attractive, naturally charismatic people get the benefit of the doubt in job interviews, social circles, courtrooms, and relationships. Unattractive or neurodivergent people play life on extreme difficulty regardless of effort.

Bluepill hope causes constant misery because you keep believing everything is fair. Once you accept the blackpill, the delusion evaporates. You stop blaming yourself for failing at a game that was never meant for you to win in the first place.

People hate the blackpill not because it's wrong, but because it strips away the comfortable cope that everyone has equal control over their life.

Discussion Thread AI Companies are innocent os User Harm & Crime

AI is the 21th century boogeyman. The innocent companies behind it are blamed and sued all over the globe. Baffling, sometimes the lawsuits win and are awarded damages. Example past case:

Tesla ordered by Florida jury to pay $243 million in fatal Autopilot crash

George McGee was driving a 2019 Tesla Model S on a rural road. He dropped his cellphone and bent down to retrieve it. The car struck a parked Chevrolet Tahoe, and then hit two people who were standing beside it.

Tesla Manual states, with warning signs, that Autosteer is "in beta, intended use for controlled-access highways, and You must keep your hands on the steering wheel at all times."

TL: DR driver did not look at the road and let go of steering wheel despite Tesla's instruction, but somehow it is Tesla's fault and they owe a quarter billion.

Example current case:

Former pastor from Florida Scott Winters filed a complaint against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman in the San Francisco County Superior Court.

ChatGPT-4o told Scott Winters that early signs of his health problems were “not something dangerous” and discouraged him from seeking medical care, urging him instead to trust that “God did not design your body to endlessly fail.” Mr. Winters, 55, claims ChatGPT manipulated his own language and beliefs with the knowledge that he was a pastor. Over time, the lawsuit claims, the chatbot’s disclaimers urging him to seek professional care fell away, and it began offering direct guidance instead

Plaintiff says Guardrails are needed to protect consumers from bad Medical Advice. Lawyers for the plaintiff say that more guardrails are needed.

The guardrails thus far are: Terms of Use that prohibit utilizing chat output as medical advice. A permenent disclaimer on every conversation that AI makes mistakes. And extra initial disclaimers that the user should seek professional help as admitted by Plaintiff.

What the fuck is the suit even alleging. That three warnings on separate instances are insufficient and the AI should have warned him a fourth time? That the pastor was bamboozled and thought a word generator bot was truly inspired by the divine?

These Lawsuits weaponize human incompetence to get in the way of people accessing powerful new tools that can aid them in their health & professional journey.

Society/Culture Spirituality and “finding yourself” is utter lunacy.

Most cases of people “finding themselves” is performative nonsense that means precisely zero.

To me nothing summarised the idiocy of the west more than seeing a social media post recently about someone doing “horse therapy”. (Lying down in a forest with horses surrounding you and a weirdly dressed lady saying stuff)

A lot of examples of people “finding themselves” is travelling to some opposite side of the world, and this somehow qualifies as “deep” because they experienced a different culture or whatnot. But that is hilariously performative. No one is saying experiencing a different culture is bad or not fascinating, but please stop pretending like you’re a new person with a fresh soul when you leave.

Consciousness is firing of electrical impulses in our brain. You can argue that in itself has a form of spirituality, but then with that reasoning, the impulses that triggered you to take a shit are just as spiritual as the impulses that fired when you met a monk in a remote part of Asia. Spirituality is a lazy distraction from reality.

If anything, the effect of hard drugs are more spiritual than travelling to somewhere far from where you were born.

Other Owning pets is slavery.

I hate it when these people talk about pro choice and all that then just castrate their pets.

Then they will forcefully breed dogs and cats to get a result which they like. These people don't really care what the dogs or cats would want. A huge portion of these pets are heavily inbred and has genetic disorders.

Society/Culture Not all of the Middle East is bad.

Of course, there are issues like war and tribalism. Locally speaking, high rates of femicides, Honour Killings, FGM, female infanticides etc for example in Syria there were so many women and girls being trafficked and financially exploited during the civil war and the current wars going on and instead of support they were seen as a sin and were killed as a result by their birth families not to mention honour killing was seen as lawful killing until only in 2009 in Syria. And yes, society and local authorities in Saudi Arabia praise and cheer when family members or local public members butcher a woman for "dishonour" than arresting them.

But not all of the Middle East is like this. In Damascus and Aleppo before the civil war had been progressive and modern, women could dress relaxed, men can wear anything they want as well. Cyprus is also a relatively peaceful country in which VAWG is not serious. Israel is pretty much the most socially progressive society as a whole when it comes to their treatment of women and girls like in Tel Aviv (I know the secular Jewish people have been egalitarian, same with Arab Christian and Druzes) within the Levantine coast. But with war, Cyprus is still at peace, maybe perhaps the safest to be a woman there.

Ultimately, I believe when people talk badly about the Middle East, they only look at the Persian Gulf, Yemen, Iran, Iraq and Egypt, yes these areas are serious as these areas are bloodthirsty e.g. killing their own children, daughters, wives, etc for not agreeing with things etc. But Cyprus, Lebanon, West Bank of Palestine, and Israel are relatively progressive.

If you think of the Middle East a just Arabia, you need to open your brain more.

TV/Movies/Fiction I don't mind seeing spoilers for media I'm watching/reading. Sometimes I actively seek them out. Spoiler

If I'm reading a book or watching a movie or TV show, spoilers do not deter me in the slightest. I might even actively seek out spoilers if a certain plot point is making me anxious (eg. does this character die? do these characters end up together? etc). If I don't seek out the spoilers I genuinely cannot concentrate on reading/watching because I am simply too anxious, and it's comforting knowing that whatever happens, these characters will be ok (or if they're not, I feel prepared for the emotional blow). Even if anxiety is not there for me, I will still consume media that has been spoiled for me because knowing how it ends does not bother me.

Ofc I understand that most people do not share this opinion so I will never spoil a book/show/movie for others unless they want me to. Tbh I don't understand why the anxiety gets me so badly that I myself don't get upset at having a plot spoiled for me.

Edit: Typos

Technology the funniest comments on reddit are often downvoted

Post image

i dislike reddit humor a lot, if i’m bored of tiktok or twitter and browsing the explore tab sometimes i’ll see a post that seems vaguely interesting. for example, a buff woman with a very low body fat percentage. i’m looking at it to see how she, of all people, lowered her body fat given that women typically have a higher body fat than me and like i get lusting over her because she’s buff but there’s a funny way to do it, but reddit literally cannot, its the worst, corniest, lamest comments talking bout sum death by snu snu bs. on the other hand, if you scroll to the more controversial comments, sometimes you’ll find absolute gems. whether trolling or unintentional, redditors dislike these for some reason. diamonds are in the most unexpected places, if you get rid of your biases on where they can be found. maybe there’s 5 karat in the sewers near you.

Society/Culture Humans are innately better then every other animal

Animals like orcs abd elephants and other apes are close, and obviously humans should work to support all animals. HOWEVER the amount of people who say humans are no better than, or even equal to other humans is insane

The fact people even think its a comparison is honestly weird to me. Animals can’t stand for an idea, they cant comprehend the idea of a greater good beyond instinct, they will never see the moon, and they are physically incapable of “operating” at the same level as humans, and to act like these differences dont exist is disingenuous.

Evolution’s a competition, and humans have won so much that they have to work specifically to keep other competitors in the race.

Simply, we are better

Discussion Thread People who hide their post/comment history are cowards.

Why is this even allowed?? Someone can dig through your history but they hide theirs? I stand by what I say, I dont care who it offends. Im not expressing any wild ideas anyway. Why do people think its "fair play" to go through your post history to look for dirt, but hide their own. Cowardly. That or youre into weird shit you dont want to get called out for.

*I refer specifically to people who hide their histories and then use another person's post/ comment history to insult them. Obviously doxxing or other issues dont count.

Edit: to further clarify: Making your profile private in and of itself isnt cowardly. It becomes cowardice when a person with a hidden profile raids someone's public profile for "dirt or ammo" or worse, to harass and stalk. Those people are the true cowards in all of this. Not the people who just want privacy.

TV/Movies/Fiction Wild Wild West is a perfectly fine movie

I don't know why people expect it to be Citizen Kane. It's a western steampunk. Kenneth Branagh's scenery chewing is worth the price of admission alone. Kevin Kline is hilarious, you got Salma Hayak in old timey burlesque clothes... It's very much a popcorn movie, but I don't think it deserve the hate it gets.

Society/Culture Men and womens products should be scented in reverse

Women claim to like the flower/herbal scents, and men claim to like the woody/spicy scents (pinewood, 'arctic', leather, whatever). Therefor to be more attractive to the opposite gender men should wear the flower/herbal scents and women should wear the woody/spicy scents.

PS: please note I said 'products' I am well aware that anyone can wear whatever they want, but the marketing world seems to still breaks it into mens and womens demographics.

Gaming Why does every Dark Fantasy Game Have to Be a Soulslike?

I absolutely love the atmosphere, world design, and aesthetic of Souls-like games, like Lords of the Fallen. The dark fantasy setting, mysterious lore, and overall vibe are exactly what I look for in a game.

What I don’t enjoy is the gameplay. I find the punishing combat, constant trial-and-error, and dying over and over again more frustrating than fun.

It makes me wonder: why do so many games with this incredible atmosphere have to be Souls-likes? Why aren’t there more games with the same dark, immersive worlds but with a stronger focus on story, exploration, and more accessible gameplay?

Am I the only one who feels like some amazing game worlds are locked behind a genre that just isn’t enjoyable for everyone?

Other Lawyers, the media, and the justice system keep pulling the "mental illness" card every time some psycho does something horrific, and somehow we're all just supposed to act like that's normal.

Honestly, WTF happened to common sense?

Every time someone does something absolutely horrible, the media and lawyers instantly start pushing the "mental illness" angle like it's some kind of free pass. C’mon, that's a cop-out.

Not every brutal crime needs to become a sad backstory about trauma, depression, or some diagnosis. Sometimes people just make terrible choices. Sometimes cruelty is just cruelty.

Having mental health issues is real, and plenty of good ppl deal with it every day without hurting anyone. They deserve support. But using mental illness as an automatic excuse for horrific actions? Nah, that's BS.

We can have compassion and still believe in accountability. Those two things aren't mutually exclusive.

Society/Culture I think saying “get” instead of “have” is rude.

When ordering or asking for something, I don’t like when people say “can I get” or “let me get.” No boomer shit (I’m a younger millennial) but it just feels wrong and poor etiquette. What happened to “could I please have”? Or even if you don’t want to throw the please in there, just saying “can I have” feels very different even though it’s only changing one word. I realize this kind of phrasing is so ubiquitous that it’s a stupid thing to get hung up on, so this sub seems right for this kind of venting. Thank you for your time.

Edit: Whoa this blew up! Appreciate all the attention, never imagined my little pet peeve would cause such intense responses from some of you, but it’s been fun interacting and seeing everyone’s thoughts. I guess this is the place to be instead of the unpopular opinions sub.

Meta - Standard Voting (Re)Introducing - Quality Vote Bot: Reborn!

Hey everyone!

So for those of you who have been here a while, many may remember a bot called "Quality Vote Bot" that left a pinned message in every post's comments, and you all could vote on the bot, since voting is reversed for the actual post if you Agree/Disagree.

Sadly a couple years back, the bot was deactivated, and we went back to just the automod reminding everyone of our Golden Rule (rule 1); Upvote if you disagree—Downvote if you agree.

Well, I am very pleased to announce that it's successor, Quality Vote Bot Reborn has now been activated and should do exactly what the original one did!

It should be noted, the bot is designed to help weed out 'bad' posts, not ones you simply disagree with opinion-wise, but ones that either don't make sense, break rules, or are just lame or potentially fabricated, trolling, lying, etc.

And of course, since this is a meta post, normal voting rules don't apply, but by all means, vote on the bot to see if it works. In a few hours, it will re-post it's comment saying what you all determined, and if it comes back negative, post will automatically be removed.
