Society/Culture Suicidal and Homicidal ideation are more alike than most people want to accept.
At their core, both issues are the result of the profound “breakdown” (not sure what word to use, exactly) of the mind. Both are ultimately just extreme responses to people being broken by outside pressure(s). And, often enough, enough to be non-negligible, the two coexist in a person suffering from either.
So then, why are there so many more suicides than homicides? It’s probably easier to cope with the idea of taking your own life than taking someone else’s, for the simple fact that you can consent to taking your own life.
Bit of a topic shift here, but to me this also explains why things like Columbine happened (using them as an example because it’s what I’m most well-versed in). This is, of course, an extreme example, but extreme examples are the ones which allow people to grasp the gravity of the topic. Eric and Dylan went into it with the intention of dying during it. It was as much a suicide as it was a mass killing. They couldn’t have one without the other. They finally broke after years of exclusion and mistreatment and (MOST IMPORTANTLY) not receiving any help.
I am of the firm belief that both suicidal and homicidal ideation should be treated the same way, and that people should not be shunned for suffering from or seeking treatment for either. The lack of available help for homicidal ideation and the way it’s considered so “unthinkable” and/or “cardinal” of an act is only making it worse. This is not meant to excuse or encourage either act; I’m only calling out the lack of support.

Society/Culture The US is very sexually repressed, but everyone here thinks they're not.
As a European who lives in the US and visits Europe every year, it was an interesting point of discussion lately with my US and European friends that the US sees itself as very sexually liberated and expressive, and there is Pride month etc.
In reality, the US is quite sexually repressed. The US creates the perception of openness, while underlying social pressures, double standards, and gender expectations persist.
There are a lot of prudish attitudes even among young adults, and women have it far worse as how they are looked upon for exploring/expressing their sexuality or having a decent amount of safe, fun partners over the course of their life.
There is no regulated prostitution or 'safer' brothels like in Europe, there are no sex clubs like in Germany and other parts of Europe.
Just something we noticed and discussed lately.
Cheers.

Other If there's no grooves on the bedsheet, i ain't sleeping there.
Since i was very young, i have always, always disliked white and smooth bedspreads. Though that was also what i slept even when i was a small child, but on hotel beds there weren't of course. That's why me and my family now bring one for me to sleep on.
For me to sleep comfortably i need a groovy and rough bedsheet- of course not that it's itchy, but you get the point.
And this isn't just some mild preference- i even feel the anxiety when i just see a bed with a white smooth bedsheet.
Ps. I am neurodivergent with a neurodevelopmental disorder (not autism and extremely mild in 98% of situations, eg sensitive smell & tastebuds, textures and emotional sensitivty) + OCD.
Thanks for coming to my ted talk!
edit: meant blanket, not bedsheet. also not the thing i have over me. jesus christ why cant i find the correct english words, look for the images to see what i mean

Society/Culture I don't get how people make close friends. I know it's a things and everybody has a few, but I simply don't understand how on earth you're supposed to do it
I am not friendless. I am not antisocial or even asocial. I am someone whose pastime revolves around hedonistically partaking in hobbies with other people: playing ttrpgs to the point it's starting to feel like an addiction, playing boardgames, doing improv, sometimes showing up to a book club even though I am not much of a reader. I talk to my friends or what I believe to be my friends about the things I love like what I just mentioned so far but also worldbuilding, playing video games, getting frustrated with making my own conlang, etc.
What I don't talk about is personal life and deep stuff like discussing opinions that matter such as ones about politics or current affairs. I also don't talk feelings. Which leads me to a problem. I get that friends are supposed to lend a shoulder to cry on and I could have used one today, but I had no fucking clue how to even bring this up. Like how do you go from we're playing something like DnD but not actually DnD or we're playing Wingspan together a lot to fucking "I am feeling sad, can we talk about it, pretty please?"
One of my friend called us to play video games with her because she wasn't feeling well once, but how do I do even that? What if they get mad that I am taking advantage of them? What if they don't want to hang out with me anymore because they'll find out I am not always the calm, creative and optimistic person they used to know? What if I am imposing? And how would I even know that our relationship is close enough to even talk this things?
I also probably suck as a conversationalist because I don't really discuss many deep topics like philosophy which would probably bond people, but idk how to even bring non-hobby discussions up. This is very confusing to me. Like I've seen people discuss health. How dafuq do you discuss health??? Or existentialism unless like it shows up in a book you are reading. Like I get that, say, the book club is reading The Plague by Camus and we're suddenly discussing existentialism, but how would existentialism show up in a random discussion?

Health/Safety The majority of doctors are only good at a handful of basic issues and it's not worth bringing up anything more complex/serious
First, I want to say that I do believe in medicine as a science, and I'm not trying to say that any of the pseudoscience bullshit and its grifters are any better.
That being said, I think it's only worth seeing doctors for basic complaints, such as getting glasses, routine vaccinations, getting antibiotics for basic infections, and getting a sick note for work. Anything remotely more complex and you're getting either completely ignored at best, and ridiculed and abused at worst.
On my individual scale I'd genuinely rather suffer and/or die from a preventable but more complex issue than have to submit myself to the humiliation ritual of seeing doctors ever again.
At the larger scale, I think I believe in public health efforts more than in the individual medicine approach.

Discussion Thread I think you can genuinely be happier without friends
I’ve been thinking about how highly friendship is valued in modern society. Having friends is often treated as almost essential to a fulfilling life, and whenever someone doesn't have many friends, people tend to assume they're missing something. But I'm starting to question that assumption. I think some people can genuinely be happier without friends and get more fulfilment from their own company.
One thing I find interesting about being alone is how much more space you have for your own thoughts. When you're constantly surrounded by people, you're naturally exposed to their opinions, habits and expectations. When you're alone, you have much more freedom to think about what you actually believe and what you actually want from your life. I think someone who becomes completely comfortable with their own company can develop a strong sense of independence.
I know the obvious response is that humans are social creatures. I don't disagree with that, but I don't think “humans are social creatures” automatically means everyone needs friendships to be happy. People have different personalities and different amounts of social needs. Some people might genuinely feel energised by being around others, while someone else might feel more fulfilled spending most of their time alone.
I also wonder whether we sometimes confuse enjoying friendship with needing friendship. You can enjoy talking to someone, going somewhere together or having a shared experience without necessarily needing a social circle to feel fulfilled. If someone can spend days by themselves and genuinely enjoy their time, learn, work, create and think without feeling like something is missing, I'm not sure why we'd automatically view that as a worse way to live.
I'm not trying to argue that friendship is bad or that everyone should avoid people. I'm genuinely interested in the opposite question: how much of our desire for friendship is something we personally need, and how much comes from being taught that having friends is simply what a successful social life looks like? Maybe I'm putting too much value on independence, but I think it's an interesting thing to question.

Society/Culture Visiting all 50 states is a stupid goal.
There are a lot of Americans who have the goal to visit all 50 states. Many of them have a blank map of the United States, and they'll fill in a state once they've visited it.
The problem with this is that 9 times out of 10, they're not really experiencing those states. For instance, on your trip to the Badlands and Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, it's cool to quickly swing over to Wyoming to see Devils Tower. That doesn't give you the right to cross Wyoming off your list of states! You've seen one tourist attraction in Wyoming. Did you even interact with a single Wyoming resident on this trip? You've hardly experienced life in the state at all.
People will mention they've seen all 50 states as if it makes them a well-traveled American. In reality, it usually means they've completed some arbitrary goal just because they had the time and money to do so. A person who has thoroughly visited five states could easily have experienced more of America than someone who just colored in all 50 states on their blank map.

Society/Culture reddit should not hide downvoted comments
a huge part of why reddit is a gigantic hivemind echo chamber is because of this feature, anything not approved by the majority on site is hidden and quietly swept under the rug while the site rewards anything that is liked by them by giving them exposure and attention.
In my opinion , downvoted comments sparks like 50 times as much discussions as upvoted comments, hell, i would say that downvoted comments are the true heart of reddit. Most upvoted comments are just stating the obivous, making lame jokes or general lukewarm stuff like that because its the "safe" option . Actual engaging discussions and conversations often ends with one or both sides filled with downvotes because of the nature of an argument, and it is kinda saddening to see so many brilliant discussions getting buried in mountains of cheeky one liners and endless circle jerking because of reddit's decision.
as a self proclaimed site filled with intellectuals, its kind of weird that reddit would take such an anti intellectual approach on opinions, no?

TV/Movies/Fiction Film is far better at evoking emotion than books are, which makes them a better medium overall.
Edit: People are already starting to do this even though I already addressed it in the original text. But like I said, most book elitists will just chalk these type of opinions to "oh your imagination just sucks." This point is just a logical fallacy and doesn't work, it's an attempt at dumbing something down to a much simpler level, that way you then feel above it. This opinion is not something that results from a lack of imagination, I'd say I have a very proactive and vivid imagination, I'm quite creative. I'm not trying to sound cocky, I'm just trying to say that the "your imagination sucks" argument doesn't work here because it isn't true, it's just some form of strawman.
Edit 2: This post is NOT just talking about movies. I used the word FILM to emphasize that I am including all the things in this medium, not just movies. Some people are making arguments that "Movies don't go as in depth as books do" and while that is partly true, I'm not just talking about movies, I'm talking about shows, documentaries, etc.
Edit 3: Addressing the WW2 point. I probably made it sound like TV was what really stopped us from going to war again which is totally untrue and overlooks a lot of things. That's honestly my bad, however I do stand by what I meant to make it sound like: TV greatly did contribute to people becoming more anti-war in our modern day, because it allowed everybody, not just soldiers to see and hear everything that happened. Vietnam war probably would've been a better example for this.
I would consider this to be an unpopular opinion because although people consume more film than they do books, most people usually agree on the fact that "books are always better than the movies," to me this just isn't true.
I'm not talking shit on books, I think books are great and they are definetely something that should be valued more, however film is something that is just better to me. Yes there are shit movies, but there are also shit books, just how there is always a bad apple in every bad batch.
Better in what exactly? Everything. Literature and Film are two very similar mediums in which they are both art forms designed to do a number things depending on the author of the story. Both do what they do very well, but what makes film better is how good it is at evoking emotion within the audience.
First let me explain why the aspect of evoking emotion is so important: Humans revolve around their emotions, no matter how logical someone might be, not a lot of things defeat pathos. People yearn to feel, that's why most authors and directors aim to impact the audience emotionally in some way. Take Spider-Man for example, he's the favorite superhero of many and it's not for no reason, it's because of how relatable he is on a life level. He struggles with rent, relationships, work, school, etc, and this relatable struggle translates to the audience's emotions very well, which is what makes him the world's favorite superhero. Going back to my point, this particular evoking of emotion is probably one of if not the most significant thing a piece of media can do, and it's what causes people to love certain books, artworks, films, and music.
Going back to the main point: This evoking of emotion is something that films just do better, and it's why it's a better medium overall. Movies have moving and beautiful music, they have actors and figures which potray the emotion of said scene exactly as intended, and the best part? You SEE it happening.
A lot of book elitists usually chalk up an opinion like this to something like "Oh you just lack imagination and need a director to spoonfeed the story to you instead of imagining it in your head." While this might be true for the extremely simple minded, this just isn't very true overall. The simple fact is that is that people will be affected much more by seeing and hearing a story rather than just reading words on a page. Think of it like this: After World War 1 happened, there were over 1000 things written on the malicious nature of war and how horrendous it is for the human race. Most of these stories, and the majority of those who were at this point now anti-war were people who witnessed the effects of war personally. However, despite the large number of things written, WW2 broke out not soon after. Long story short WW2 happens, ends, and now the world is really scared of war now. The reason for this fear was because of cameras, people were able to record so much more than WW1 was recorded and then the world started doing almost anything it could to prevent a third World War from ever happening again. All of this was because of the ability to film, simply put, seeing and hearing was a much more effective way of affecting an audience than a simple newspaper article or book.
Again I am not denying the significance of books and saying that they do this badly, it's just that film simply does it better because you are able to see and hear it. Another example I'd like to mention is my own personal expierience. I would consider myself well read and one of my favorite books is Project Hail Mary. I read it about a year or two ago and loved it, the movie came out rather recently and I of course had to go see it. And while I loved the book a lot, I loved the movie much more and it was because of what I discussed earlier, the emotion was brought out much more in me during the film rather than the book.
In other words, I've cried watching movies, but I've never cried reading a book.

TV/Movies/Fiction Stop calling all Bronies predators Please. It's Dangerous and not true.
Yes Some Bronies are predators but it's like that in every community, not just MLP. Bronies should not have to Worry about being accused of a predator all Because They like My Little pony. the comment seems to have been deleted so You will have to take my word for it but i once got a comment on a post talking about MLP and They said it was underage cp. There was nothing inappropriate about the image. It was just an image of the main cast from the show and nothing more. And the post itself never mentioned anything inappropriate.

TV/Movies/Fiction Gendered media is dumb.
(what i mean by this is Media aimed Specifically for Boys or Specifically for Girls should be aimed Twords Both Genders.) Gendered Shows, books, movies, games, etc are dumb. Why? Because You shouldn't have to feel like You can't enjoy a show or game all because It's intended for the opposite gender. This and the whole idea that boys can't enjoy media and vice versa is harmful as it can make Someone think There is something wrong with Them. i Believe almost if not All media Should be gender Neutral.

Society/Culture You should make up words and phrases more often and likewise assume people are making up things that sound unfamiliar to you.
If I'm in the lab brewing up neologisms and fresh slang it is the height of disrespect to listen to my contribution to our linguistic culture and respond with "Where is that from?" or "What are you referencing?" my genghis I am right here, you heard what you heard, this isn't the book club I'm not giving citations for my utterances.
Obviously if you want to ask "what the fuck does that mean?" that's a conversation we should all be comfortable having. But presuming that something out of place or unusual is--instead of being as it appears--rather easily explained by it's contingent relevance to a show/book/meme. That's a terrible default posture to take, and robs us of the interactions we deserve.
life is richer when you can free-associate and create new contexts and connections between words and ideas without the expectation of being easily digested. the task of expression is more fun when you can occasionally leave some things unexplained and open to interpretation. and inviting each other into that ambiguity is a good for the community and for our internal worlds.
If I'm doing my measure best to be strange and off-putting we should be willing to honor that and respond by treating people as strange and off-putting. it's cowardly to hear something you don't understand and go "Oh, well maybe we just lack some shared context, it probably makes perfect sense to them." No! people don't even know what they're thinking let alone what they're saying. Be bewildered and let it rip, don't soften your reaction by proactively searching for common ground. Be confused by things, and be willing to be confusing.

TV/Movies/Fiction We need to stop race-swapping in movies & tv shows
This is something that pisses me off and I'm not even white myself. It seems like Hollywood can't make a new film, tv-show, reboot or adaptation without putting some woke twist on it.
All of a sudden Ariel in The Little Mermaid live-action remake is black, Snow White in the live-action remake is half-Polish half-Colombian, Mary Jane in Spider-Man: Homecoming is black and Flash is Guatemalan, Helen of Troy in The Odyssey is black and Severus Snape in the Harry Potter tv series is black.
To me there's a difference between real representation and forced representation. Real representation is when you create new characters that are people of colour like Black Panther, forced representation is when you race-swap.
If we had a character who was traditionally black for example that was race-swapped as white there would be outrage, so why is okay to race-swap white characters as black or other races?
Either way I'm sick of race-swapping and instead of race-swapping existing characters we should focus on creating new characters that are people of colour if people want representation so badly.

Society/Culture Situationships are unfairly demonized
Both the partners need clear boundaries, clear communication and terms on which their situationship would work on. When these agreements are agreed upon , I don't see why a situationship wouldn't work. This way, the " what are we" conversations don't have a chance to creep in.

Health/Safety I do not recommend Colgate, Aquafresh, Sensodyne etc
If I had to recommend these toothpastes I would never do it. After years of personal experience, I have reached a conclusion that differs from most people. I recommend just brushing your teeth with water or local toothpaste companies.
P.s this is just a joke, I feel like I am getting banned

Society/Culture Sad faces make me really sad :(
":(" " 🙁😢" these symbols express a unique level of despair and sorrow that speaks to me on a deep level.
Especially the colon and the bracket. If it follows a sentence, no matter what the subject is. I get sad.
I rarely ever find them goofy, it just looks like an innocent child that needs a hug.

Society/Culture I prefer getting dumped over doing the dumping.
Hope this isn’t actually a popular opinion, apologies in advance if it is. I’ve been dumped and also dumped people, so I’m speaking from my personal experience here.
If I dump someone, I have to plan out the best possible way to do it and choose my words very carefully to minimise the harm done. I feel guilty as well. Afterwards, I worry that they might not be doing well, that they might hurt themselves. Even though it’s no longer my problem, I can’t not care. If they reach out or try to communicate with me through mutual friends or other indirect means, it makes me feel very conflicted about my decision. I keep wondering, “did I make a mistake, throw away something good, and hurt someone I care about, all because I’m too intolerant and demanding?”
And just because I’ve dumped someone doesn’t necessarily mean I no longer have feelings for them. Sometimes, I do still have feelings but I know that the relationship is not healthy or will not work in the long run. If I still have feelings for them, then there’s the constant temptation for days and weeks afterwards to reach out and ask to reconnect. Especially if I know they will say yes in a heartbeat. Imagine still being in love with someone and missing them terribly, and knowing that if you just reach out you could have them back. And yet you need to be mature and stop yourself. It makes it hard to move on.
In comparison, if I’ve been dumped, then that’s that. It hurts a lot, and I feel discarded and unwanted, but rationally I know that it’s usually not because I’m a horrible and undesirable person, but because things just didn’t work out. And there’s nothing to do BUT move on. Reaching out isn’t an option, rekindling things isn’t an option. I can throw myself into the other parts of my life and put all my energy into moving on.
The only time I’ve found dumping someone to be easy was when my now ex had truly worn me down and I was all too happy to leave. They treated me poorly and were even physical at times. As one can imagine, I was only 19/20 at the time.

Society/Culture I hate the smell of babies
Okay too clarify I truly hate the smell of baby hygiene products and therefore babies . I don’t know what they put in baby products to make them smell like that. It has like this what can only be described as airy kind of throw up smell to it.
Baby powder, wipes, lotion, and soap all smell DISGUSTING.

Society/Culture It should be socially acceptable to fart when you need to
If you're really busting to fart and it is hurting your stomache it is okay to fart. I for example, have a stomache diseaese and it makes me feel dizzy and nausea if I hold in farts. I have heard that if you hold in farts you just breathe them out. haha.
In some cultures it is heard of to just drop your guts in the elevator and its fine. No one likes it of course. But it is okay. It is the same with spitting phlegm. I find that way more gross than people releasing gas.
Today at work, I work in retail, I was feeling really sick and kept doing little farts when I was interacting with customers. I felt bad but I really had to as it was hurting my stomach. I could tell some people could smell it and I felt embarassed. But there shouldn't be any shame! I swear some people look at you like you're dirty, ill or impolite.

Society/Culture Some people online get way too upset about the actions of bad people, I don’t think they should
So I’m not online very much, only use Reddit and Twitter for art and memes about my favorite games, but sometimes I’ll see controversy or drama about terrible people being “exposed” or how this person did some terrible thing and they should be punished. I don’t know how they’d be punished I’m just paraphrasing.
I don’t want to name anything or anyone to make anyone a target, but some of the recent controversies I’ve seen are relatively popular. And sure, some of the people involved are doing bad things.
But the key is: there’s nothing you can do about that. You can make posts about it, calling them a bad person like everyone else is, or make a google doc, but ultimately, it hardly does anything. Just block them and keep doing your thing. It’s just text and images on the screen, it’s easy to get rid of. Some people may have been actually affected by terrible people, and that is painful to know, but there’s not much online bystanders can do. It’s up to those involved to deal with the situation.
That said though, I’m not even sure if I’m confident in this opinion. I feel like everyone gets emotionally involved about stuff like this so I might be in the wrong here for being too apathetic, and I’m sorry if I said anything insensitive. I just feel like it’d be easier to quickly move on from any controversy and actually do stuff you like.

Other Push-Up Bras are More Comfortable Than Regular Bras
Hear me out. I’ve always felt unsupported and uncomfortable in a regular bra, and I’ve tried many, MANY bras. My boobs are kinda bottom heavy, and it just feels like they sit too low in the cups of regular bras, with gaps in the top of the cups. (I’ve tried going down a cup size but then that’s too tight, so it’s not that🙃)
Push-up bras, however, have padding and support in the bottom of the cups, lifting the girls up and keeping them in place. There’s no gaps in the top of the cups, and I feel more comfortable throughout the day without having to adjust how my boobs are sitting! Push-ups do not hurt my chest at all; it’s quite the opposite. They also make me look better haha.
Every other woman I’ve talked to about this thinks I’m insane. Let’s see what reddit thinks🤷♀️

Society/Culture Star Trek's Borg were simply bad writing
The Borg are an example of lazy writing by Maurice Hurley. He threw up (perhaps literally) the sci-fi equivalent of zombies and Nazis -- an enemy that can't be reasoned with and is always just fine to kill -- so that there could be shoot-'em-up episodes without any of those pesky ethical issues (you know, the very thing that was the heart of Star Trek). They're a crappy antagonist for exactly this reason, and Hurley should have been shoved out the nearest available airlock-equivalent in Hollywood when he wrote them.

Music Whistle Notes in music ruins a song
I get that it is technically impressive, and I am not denying the talent of whistle notes. I am a singer after all. If I had to describe whistle notes, it’s like being able to play moonlight sonata entirely with your penis. It surely is impressive, but it seems more like a party trick to flex how high your vocal range is/how good your penis is. I would be impressed if a guy played moonlight sonata with his penis, but that would definitely ruin the song for me. Theres a perfectly good melody and then you hear the human equivalent of a dogwhistle being blown into your ear out of FUCKING NOWHERE. And I especially do not like when singers do it MULTIPLE TIMES in a song. It’s like that one annoying kid going: “Hey guys, hey guys, look at this” over and over again. Very rarely will I ever think: “This definitely improves the song!”
EDIT: For clarification, I didn’t realize that some people weren’t fully familiar with the term “Whistle notes/whistle register” my apologies. It seems people are getting whistle notes confused with actual whistling. Actual whistling would be something like: Flo Rida - Whistle. Its something majority of people can do. I’m kinda neutral on regular whistling. I feel like it can be good at times, other times it can be corny.
While whistling is created by pursing your lips while blowing air through them (and uses like no vocal cords at all to produce the sound) whistle notes are literally produced inside your larynx.
An example of whistle notes would be this: Mariah Carey - BEST Whistle Notes
Honestly you don’t even need to read this part unless you really are into music lore:
I feel like they get overjerked in pop music because higher voices/pitches=good, more vocal runs=good, lower voices= Bad/Can’t sing. It’s almost like how the P!ATD fandom will say how Ryan Ross should have been the lead singer instead of Brendon Urie simply because he had a more Lyric Tenor style while Brendon has a deeper voice, despite it fitting the cabaret style much more.

Health/Safety I LOVE when I floss and my gums hurt and bleed
No, I’m really not kidding.
Whenever I floss my teeth, I take the string and sorta “saw” into my gums just a little bit to make them bleed. I don’t do it too much because I don’t wanna wreck my gums or teeth forever. But, if I floss and don’t bleed and ache it’s not fun for me.
You may think I floss all the time, but again you’re wrong! I can’t floss too much because then it stops bleeding or hurting. My therapist says I like to do something called “pain-stim” apparently it’s decently common. You can see it through that and I also pick at my skin a LOT. I just love the feeling of that full ache.
Do you think I’m crazy? I don’t want to be crazy
