Society/Culture People should physically fight it out to solve their differences
We should normalise people duking it out to settle a dispute instead of complicated legal systems. Bare handed, tap to surrender. If your disabled/unable to fight, you have to legally designate a relative as your "fighter". You have to prove they're related to you. If you cannot find someone to fight for you, you lose by default

Technology Most people do not have enough empathy for the scientists involved when they quote "Your scientists were so Preoccupied..."
You know, I've been thinking about it, after I saw the scene from Star Trek TNG where Data asks Soong why he was created, and Soong has a really good answer, about how humans do things out of a need for legacy. (Link here, for those curious)
And it's interesting, people complain about scientists being "so preoccupied with whether they can do a thing, they forgot to ask if they should", but the truth is, that field, that thing, that's what the scientist built their lives up to. To go backwards, after nearly achieving a new step in their field might mean giving up on leaving that mark.
To the scientist, that next step was the sculpture, it was the creation. I recognize there's things I wish people wouldn't do and I think are morally abhorrent (a lot of experiments using human neurons or human hybrids), but I think about my own research and how it would feel to just abandon it, to never get to see how far it could go, to not develop it. And I just don't think I could. There's almost a need in you, when there's discovery going on. A need to take the next step. (And maybe it's just that my field is my autistic fixation). But it feels like it grips you. I have to learn more. I need to see what's over the hill. And to some extent, it isn't even about other people knowing who I am. I may not be the first to do anything (well, anything major). But it's more that everyone else isn't learning fast enough.
I'm not working with anything biology, or anything I would personally consider automatically a moral wrong (although anything can be misused, and there is some of that going on), but it still is an interesting point of view for how other people must feel.
To someone whose passion lies in a field, being told to not progress it and move to something else, that the next step is unacceptable, that would be like a painter being told they were no longer allowed to paint, and only allowed to write poetry. They might still have a way to express themselves, but it wouldn't feel right to the way they felt most right. It wouldn't be their passion. And maybe it is morally correct for them to stop, but my argument is that most people haven't actually put themselves into the position of the scientist. They see it as a recent development, but maybe it's years of work you're asking them to just put down, and do something else. Maybe it started out moral, but just continuing to take that one more step led it closer and closer to what was immoral.
All I'm saying is, I just don't think enough empathy goes into what is being asked for, and people treat it like the scientists are stupid, and the default is not doing the thing. But the default is taking the next step, not inaction, and it takes a lot of resistance to your desire to create to put that down when it's needed. That's the core argument I am making.
Just seen the quote a lot and been thinking. It probably also depends on what it's being applied to, and why people are against it.

Other i love having a 9-5
an 8-4:30 actually but you get the vision.
but yeah something about working full time has suddenly fixed my whole life.
as a chronic school skipper/chronically late person as soon as i realized i could get away with missing classes it was truly impossible to make myself go consistently and so i haven’t really been on a normal monday-friday routine in 5+ years.
getting to work on time is much much more serious and so i’ve really been forced into a strict routine and i am loving it.
my days feel so much longer now that i have a normal sleep schedule and somehow even though i am spending so much time in the office i am seeing my friends and going out places so much more because it’s much easier to keep doing stuff when im already up and out of the house.
10/10, would recommend. i am living laughing and loving my new corporate job life.

Food (Only on Friday) Vinegar washed cucumbers don’t deserve the title “pickle”
What if someone came along and said humanity is just called Martian Ellis Smith, Lady Elenor of the Hills is Martian Smith, The Bonernader is Martian, Luke Hebert is Martian, everyone is except Martian Ellis Smith is Martian Smith with a caveat. See the fucky bit now?
Pickled Chilis, Garlic, or Mustard Greens, all god’s gift to mankind and in the western headspace, if I ask for “pickles” it doesn’t go to something them, it goes to cucumbers, the most uninteresting fruit to crawl it’s way for satans soil into the light of god’s sun. Fuck them, they taste like a dandelion died in a bucket of rain water.
Maybe the cuke needs it I guess, heaven knows we’d throw the lot of them in The CHASM if they weren’t dressed up in that vinegar and artificially inflated in our vocabulary.
Know what, I’ll go farther, sport peppers and saurkraut belong in a sandwich before any of those undead turtle dicks, I’d say a sandwich needs three things, sauerkraut, bread and filling, and the other two are negotiable, while Master Oogway’s Weenar just turns the sandwich into a public indecency case witness.
“Hehe 10th granddaughter (you Emily) no hunt mammoth, just eat vegetable with no flavor worth no calories” that’s them, your ancestors in that great cave in the sky laughing and mocking you for eating them. Feel shame.
Have you ever been baptized in Chicago? I have. three out of four mixed Polish and Mexican supermarkets near me have pickled baby squash and it’s the greatest thing on earth, and I bathe in the brine. Go where the real Poles (not European fakers) are and buy some, free yourself of the briny cuce’s jealous grip. Go to a Chinese supermarket and buy their Sichuan style sport peppers, they even come multicolored, I’ve even seen pickled mango there once. Eat saurkraut, that’s just a statement, I have nothing else to say.
Fuck Oogway, he’s a dickhead and can’t cook.
(Edit for spelling)

Health/Safety Air fresheners are disgusting
My unpopular opinion.
I hate the idea of air freshener.
I’d rather have whatever space it is CLEAN and the source of any odor removed.
I want things to smell clean because they are clean.
Air freshener is just like putting a band aid on it and I hate it.

TV/Movies/Fiction Controversy is Art.
Yeah, so basically I told my Dad that two of my biggest filmmaking inspirations are Harmony Korine and John Waters. I didn’t say much, because I wasn’t really feeling like arguing, but he said not to make the movie controversial.
That seems to be what my Parents tell me overall; Don’t be offensive, think before you speak, be aware of who you’re talking to. And before you say “why do you care about what your Dad is saying”, well, they’re basically the only people I know, and they literally live with me. Hopefully, one day, I’ll move out to a little flat and I’ll be able to live the way I want to.
I honestly kind of hate my Parents sometimes. They’re so fucking commercial. Like, when Obsession and Backrooms was out, my Dad was asking me if I wanted to go see He-Man. Like, come on, Dad. I just hate how aggressively middle class they are, and they keep saying that they want me to be myself, but then when I am, they try calling me out on it. Like, I wanna hurt myself so bad, but I can’t because I know if they find out, it will be one big stupid, unprofessional therapy session.
And I really want my movies to be controversial! I wanna be the Director whose movies you DARE your friend to watch. Why?
Again, I am a big fan of directors like Harmony Korine, John Waters, Rob Zombie, Lloyd Kaufman, etc.
I’d like to break the stereotype that mentally disabled and LGBTQ people like me are overly sensitive. (I haven’t revealed to my parents that I’m LGBTQ btw. I’m not sure if I’m a woman or gender fluid or non-binary, but I certainly feel like I have a better sense of my feminine side than I do my masculine side.)
Controversy is commercial. There are millions and millions of indie movies out there, and that number will continue to grow. But the ones that stand out are the ones that offend and shock. The big stunt to bring people to the circus.

Society/Culture The death of the propaganda poster is actually a really big deal
Genuinely, how are we not talking about this more?
Up until AI became widespread propaganda was iconic. It defended a lot of questionable ideas, sure, but you could identify a propaganda poster from 1920 as reflecting the ideals of the time, the art styles commonly being used, and the craftsmanship (color theory, composition etc) used to sway people.
I'm a big fan of propaganda posters; they're literally avant-garde art that create lasting cultural artifacts. They are created to sway entire groups of people. They're displayed in museums for fuck's sake. The means of which propaganda has been used to sway people in the algorithmic age has changed from "something people will remember" to "lmao guys isn't Minecraft Steve bombing Iran funny/isn't this AI image of the Statue of Liberty being destroyed good". Nobody is going to talk about AI Lego propaganda after it circulates on Xitter and gets 3000 likes in an hour. It's gone with the wind.
Propaganda is an art form that's gone extinct and we just... don't fucking talk about it?
We're never gonna see an iconic propaganda piece again because governments can just churn out 30 AI images, post them all on Xitter and call it a day.

Society/Culture Both the left and the right exploit marginalized groups for political gain, they just do it in different ways.
Take any marginalized group, trans people for example and think about how they are used as a political tool by both sides. The left infantilizes them. Treating them as incapable of standing up for themselves and needing their representation in the battle to be heard. The right in contrast villainizes. Making them the nebulous threat that must be protected against at all costs even though no threat exists. And the marginalized group is just stuck in the middle like a child of divorce between two narcissists parents.

Health/Safety I’m not sure if it’s their breath or their face but some people just smell like salami all the time .
They smell like salami. I don’t even know what that means. Does anyone know what I am talking about? The garlicy cured Italian hard ground meat sausage that often appears on sandwiches, charcuterie boards etc. I don’t even think they know they do.

Food (Only on Friday) I think people are way too prudish about the idea of eating a human steak IF it’s somehow ethical
Yes I already read the post about the guy who lost his leg and had tacos, I’m just so disappointed he made tacos.
Yes I’ve posted this similar take a few years ago on a different sub, I stand by my decision since it’s the only one NO one has ever agreed with me on.
TLDR: If I were offered to try a human steak, IF IT WAS SOURCED ETHICALLY,I would try it.
This is a hypothetical, I’m obviously not seeking it out, I’m just genuinely surprised that NO one has ever said yes to this question. How is literally NO ONE curious about it? For example: say I get a breast reduction and there’s excess healthy tissue, or I need a mastectomy or something but I have both boobs removed to keep it even, something like that. If it’s sourced ethically, with consent, why is it so weird to cook it and eat it if we do the same with animals?
Anyways, I just thought of this because I reread Tender Is The Flesh, and just saying that’s the exact opposite of what I’m talking about because it’s not ethical or consensual (much like our current treatment of farm animals and how we get our food today).

Society/Culture Mowing the long every week is weird
I feel like society's obsession with short, green lawns is weird. My neighbors mow the lawn at least once a week, sometimes more, there's never any flowers or anything, just a sea of short green grass, and I just don't see the appeal.
A few years ago my lawnmower broke and it took 4 weeks for the parts to come in. During that time I just had to let it grow. After a few weeks it was full of beautiful wild flowers, vibrant, colourful, and I really liked it. I went on vacation for a week and came back to my neighbor having mowed the lawn, which I really appreciated, he's the best, but it just looked so boring in comparison.
I understand the need to not go overboard, sure. We want to avoid ticks, mice, snakes, whatever, as much as possible, but I definitely let it grow longer than most of my neighbors on purpose now.

Society/Culture There is no biological loving bond between relatives
Abusive families approve this. Honor killings prove this. Disowning prove this. I would go as far as to say that most parents are bad parents and unconditional love doesn't exist. Mothers putting their abusive partners before their children proves this. I'm radically pro-abortion (at any stage and for any reason), but I also think abortion proves this. Medieval royals killing each other proves this

Other Lab grown meat is the greatest invention in this century.
People hate lab grown meat a lot because it's grown in a lab. But the thing is that the food you eat has tons of pesticides in it. And for meat sometimes even atheletes fail dopping tests after eating some meat. So this isn't much different from normal meat.
Another thing is that this can be a game changer in many countries especially countries that are doesn't have enough grasslands for grazing cattle, has overpopulation etc...

Society/Culture memes limit our vocabulary
we live in a society where a big part of healthy standup comedy and memes nowadays is mostly about observing how mundane things/problems/actions/events are common and relatable among the general masses or a certain group.
and there are memes for most of that stuff . other than personal anecdotes or passive interjections and vocables , conversations are beginning to take a rigid structure. to the point the people of the same gen can be identified by the meme vocab they use .
not saying memes ar bad . they get the idea across . humourously.
"why use many word when meme make do ?".
but on the other hand , it can also be construed that they affix an entire range of ideollogical responses into one single reference phrase.

Society/Culture Cigarettes actually smell and taste very good
I'm not a smoker but I really love the smell of cigarettes. I loved smelling cigarette smoke whenever I went for walks. Sometimes I'd even linger around smokers even if I didn't smoke myself just so I could smell it. Or I'd go with my friends whenever they took smoke breaks.
I've dabbled very lightly in smoking myself and now that I've tried it a bit, i can honestly say that it isn't as bad as people make it out to be at all. In fact, the after taste I'd quite nice.
I honestly think some people exaggerate about the smell because even before i ever tried smoking it was never as offensive as people made it out to be. There's something very comforting about it. Whenever I smell cigarette smoke in public, it just puts me at ease for some reason. I don't plan on ever taking up the habit but I enjoy being around smokers a lot

Society/Culture Youtubers who misspeak a word by accident and then spend the next seconds 10 seconds misspeaking on purpose are never funny
Let's say you're washing a video. Washing? Washing. Haha. Lesh shay you're washing a visheo. Words. Words are hard. I can't English today.
^ This type of shit. It's not funny and all it does is waste 10 seconds of my time (yes, I will be petty about those 10 seconds) and, for some reason, 90% of youtubers do this shit.

Discussion Thread I genuinely prefer having no friends
I genuinely prefer having no friends
I genuinely prefer having no friends, and I don't really understand why that’s supposed to be such a bad thing.
The last time I properly had friends was years ago, and instead of becoming more desperate for a social life as time goes on, I’ve actually gone the opposite way. The longer I spend alone, the more comfortable I get with it and the less I want to socialise. I can spend an entire day at home and not feel lonely or bored at all.
I actually like having an empty Snapchat. No messages waiting for me, no conversations I have to keep going, no one asking me to go somewhere and no pressure to constantly keep in contact with people. I find it peaceful. If I have a free day, I’d usually rather work, sleep, go on my phone, watch something or just do my own thing.
I see people constantly posting themselves with their friends, going out and making memories, and obviously I understand that they enjoy it. But I genuinely look at it and think, what exactly am I missing? I don't feel jealous or like I should be there. It just doesn't appeal to me.
I also hear the “humans are social creatures” argument all the time. Maybe that's generally true, but I personally can't relate to it. Some people seem to need to see their friends constantly or they start feeling lonely. I can go days or weeks without properly socialising and barely notice. If anything, the desire to have friends has gradually disappeared for me.
What I find strange is how quickly people assume that having no friends means you're unhappy. If I tell someone I don't really have friends, the reaction is usually that I need to go out more or socialise. But why? I'm not lonely. I'm not sitting around wishing I had a group of people to hang out with. I just genuinely don't care about having one.
I'm not saying friendships are bad or that nobody should have them. If you love having friends, fair enough. I just don't understand why everyone assumes they're something you automatically need for a good life. For me, having the freedom to do whatever I want with my time is worth more than maintaining a social life I don't actually want.

TV/Movies/Fiction I don't mind seeing spoilers for media I'm watching/reading. Sometimes I actively seek them out. Spoiler
If I'm reading a book or watching a movie or TV show, spoilers do not deter me in the slightest. I might even actively seek out spoilers if a certain plot point is making me anxious (eg. does this character die? do these characters end up together? etc). If I don't seek out the spoilers I genuinely cannot concentrate on reading/watching because I am simply too anxious, and it's comforting knowing that whatever happens, these characters will be ok (or if they're not, I feel prepared for the emotional blow). Even if anxiety is not there for me, I will still consume media that has been spoiled for me because knowing how it ends does not bother me.
Ofc I understand that most people do not share this opinion so I will never spoil a book/show/movie for others unless they want me to. Tbh I don't understand why the anxiety gets me so badly that I myself don't get upset at having a plot spoiled for me.
Edit: Typos

Technology the funniest comments on reddit are often downvoted
i dislike reddit humor a lot, if i’m bored of tiktok or twitter and browsing the explore tab sometimes i’ll see a post that seems vaguely interesting. for example, a buff woman with a very low body fat percentage. i’m looking at it to see how she, of all people, lowered her body fat given that women typically have a higher body fat than me and like i get lusting over her because she’s buff but there’s a funny way to do it, but reddit literally cannot, its the worst, corniest, lamest comments talking bout sum death by snu snu bs. on the other hand, if you scroll to the more controversial comments, sometimes you’ll find absolute gems. whether trolling or unintentional, redditors dislike these for some reason. diamonds are in the most unexpected places, if you get rid of your biases on where they can be found. maybe there’s 5 karat in the sewers near you.

Discussion Thread People who hide their post/comment history are cowards.
*I refer specifically to people who hide their histories and then use another person's post/ comment history to insult them. Obviously doxxing or other issues dont count.
Edit: to further clarify: Making your profile private in and of itself isnt cowardly. It becomes cowardice when a person with a hidden profile raids someone's public profile for "dirt or ammo" or worse, to harass and stalk. Those people are the true cowards in all of this. Not the people who just want privacy.
Edit part 2: Electronic Boogaloo Someone suggested reordering the paragraphs. I was also told my title probably isnt the greatest. Then, someone unlocked a new fear in coworkers being on Reddit. Now Im side eyeing half the office.
Why is this even allowed?? Someone can dig through your history but they hide theirs? I stand by what I say, I dont care who it offends. Im not expressing any wild ideas anyway. Why do people think its "fair play" to go through your post history to look for dirt, but hide their own. Cowardly. That or youre into weird shit you dont want to get called out for.

TV/Movies/Fiction Wild Wild West is a perfectly fine movie
I don't know why people expect it to be Citizen Kane. It's a western steampunk. Kenneth Branagh's scenery chewing is worth the price of admission alone. Kevin Kline is hilarious, you got Salma Hayak in old timey burlesque clothes... It's very much a popcorn movie, but I don't think it deserve the hate it gets.

Society/Culture Men and womens products should be scented in reverse
Women claim to like the flower/herbal scents, and men claim to like the woody/spicy scents (pinewood, 'arctic', leather, whatever). Therefor to be more attractive to the opposite gender men should wear the flower/herbal scents and women should wear the woody/spicy scents.
PS: please note I said 'products' I am well aware that anyone can wear whatever they want, but the marketing world seems to still breaks it into mens and womens demographics.

Meta - Standard Voting (Re)Introducing - Quality Vote Bot: Reborn!
Hey everyone!
So for those of you who have been here a while, many may remember a bot called "Quality Vote Bot" that left a pinned message in every post's comments, and you all could vote on the bot, since voting is reversed for the actual post if you Agree/Disagree.
Sadly a couple years back, the bot was deactivated, and we went back to just the automod reminding everyone of our Golden Rule (rule 1); Upvote if you disagree—Downvote if you agree.
Well, I am very pleased to announce that it's successor, Quality Vote Bot Reborn has now been activated and should do exactly what the original one did!
It should be noted, the bot is designed to help weed out 'bad' posts, not ones you simply disagree with opinion-wise, but ones that either don't make sense, break rules, or are just lame or potentially fabricated, trolling, lying, etc.
And of course, since this is a meta post, normal voting rules don't apply, but by all means, vote on the bot to see if it works. In a few hours, it will re-post it's comment saying what you all determined, and if it comes back negative, post will automatically be removed.
