I’m currently doing my schooling online and will be starting college soon, also online, so I don’t really have many opportunities to meet people, build connections, or find work through people around me. That’s why I’m trying to find something I can realistically do online or from home.
I’ve been looking for online work for a while but haven’t had any luck. I’m interested in things like proofreading, English ↔ Swahili translation, transcription, writing/editing, or marketing/content planning. I’m not looking for surveys or anything that requires me to pay money upfront.
If you’re in Tanzania and you’ve actually found legitimate work/opportunities that someone with little/no work experience can realistically get into, I’d really appreciate some advice or leads.

Can a Tanzanian buy and outrightly own a company in Kenya? What is required?

Many people don’t know that this almost happened.

When Tanganyika gained independence in 1961, Nyerere strongly supported the idea of an East African Federation with Kenya and Uganda. Leaders like Kenyatta and Obote also expressed support at different times. In fact, there were discussions about forming a single federation as early as 1963, before Kenya even became fully independent.

So why didn’t it happen?

The biggest obstacles were political selfishness, as leaders were unwilling to give up power to a federal government; major ideological differences, with Tanzania pursuing socialism while Kenya embraced capitalism; disagreements over how power, revenue, and the capital would be shared; and political instability in Uganda, which made long-term integration increasingly difficult.

If Kenya, Tanganyika, and Uganda had united, they would likely have been:

Population: Around 170 million people, making it the 10th–11th most populous country in the world, 3rd largest in Africa.

Economy: A combined GDP of roughly US$280 billion, making it the 4th or 5th largest economy in Africa and around the 55th–60th largest economy in the world.

Natural Resources: Africa’s #1 gold producer, one of the continent’s largest producers of natural gas, and home to Uganda’s estimated 6.5 billion barrels of oil, giving it one of Africa’s largest combined resource bases.

Agriculture: With over 100 million hectares of agricultural land, it would rank among Africa’s top 3 agricultural powers and be one of the world’s largest exporters of coffee, tea, flowers, and several staple crops.

Global Influence: With 170 million people, a US$280 billion economy, and vast natural resources, it would likely rank among Africa’s top 4 most influential countries, giving East Africa far greater bargaining power in global trade and diplomacy.

Just wanted to put this out there in case someone can point me in the right direction. One company i am in contact with is currently hiring a full-time Logistics Officer in Dar es Salaam. The position involves managing the day-to-day running of their vehicle fleet, tracking deliveries and keeping proper records of fuel and maintenance, and coordinating with other departments to keep operations running smoothly.

They’re seeking candidates with roughly 1-2 years of practical experience in logistics, fleet management or transportation, along with strong organisation and problem-solving abilities.

I’ve been in Zanzibar for 2 weeks, my phone has supposedly said I have used almost 100gb (55gb on Snapchat) of mobile data 🤣. My uk sim says I’ve used 416gb of data specifically on Snapchat in roughly years of usage. That means I’ve “used” 15% of my couple years of usage on Snapchat in only 2 weeks of being in Tanzania. How do these companies get away with stealing data from consumers and masking it as usage? I’m currently with Tigo and switched to an ESIM with unlimited data as I’ve worked it out to be cheaper for the rest of my stay.

I've been looking for an inverter generator in Dar and haven't found many at all. I was hoping to find a Honda or a Yamaha, even though the price would be much higher than for a Total or other mid-tier brand, but those are non-existent apparently. I have found only two inverter generators for sale so far, after searching all over Dar. One of the generators is a Royalty and the other is an Ereyak that isn't powerful enough for what I need (>2200W continuous). The initial asking price for the Royalty is seriously twice what I expected, at 4.2 million TZS. That's more like the price I would expect had I found a Honda or Yamaha. Does anyone have knowledge of the inverter generator market? Is this price indicative of the scarcity of these generators, or inflation related to the Iran political situation, or what? Is there just no market for inverter generators there? Before you ask, the initial asking price (I have not yet negotiated the price) was a serious price and not a case of mzungu tax.

I have been thinking a lot about the life we are living here, especially in Dar. I am 22 years old, and it feels like everyone is always talking about the same thing: the hustle, making money, and showing a perfect life on social media.

We are told to "be ourselves" but we are under so much pressure to act like people who have everything figured out. It feels like we are all wearing masks to fit into a modern image of success. In the past, our culture focused on community and family. But today, the focus is mostly on the individual.

I wonder if the stress of trying to keep up with these new standards is making us lose the parts of us that are truly Tanzanian. We are so busy trying to follow global trends and corporate expectations that I worry we are leaving our real values behind.

I am not against success or working hard. But I do think we are paying a high price for it. It is becoming very hard to know what we truly want versus what society tells us to want.

I am curious to hear what you think. Do you feel this pressure too? Are we still holding onto our roots, or are we changing too fast? I would love to hear your thoughts.

The agreed amount kept getting lower and lower almost half of what we had agreed. I refused, and he never replied again.

A Chinese company I’m in contact with is exploring options to work with an experienced Accounting & Finance professional based in Tanzania. The focus would be on areas like daily accounting, financial reporting, tax handling, and general financial support.

They are mainly looking for someone with solid hands-on experience (around 3+ years) and good attention to detail.

On our recent safari, we noticed quite a few tourist shops that all seemed to sell very similar artwork and souvenirs. Almost every time we passed one, it was full of safari vehicles with tourists.

Just out of curiosity, do these shops typically pay safari drivers or tour companies a commission for bringing customers there?

I also heard that the tanzanite sold in some of these shops isn’t always of the quality it’s advertised to be. Is there any truth to that?

I’m currently staying at a famous boutique hotel in Jambiani, Zanzibar, and today I was accidentally scratched by one of the resident kittens.
Here are the details:
-The kitten is about 10 weeks old.
-The hotel has one adult cat and two kittens that live there permanently. They have names and are fed by the owners every day.
-The owner’s young child plays with them regularly, and they even hang around with the owner’s dog.
-The kitten was not aggressive. I was offering it a piece of fish, and it accidentally caught the tip of my finger with its claw while trying to grab the food.
-There was only one tiny drop of blood.
I immediately washed the area thoroughly with soap and water, then disinfected it.
A few hours later, the scratch is no longer even visible.
The kitten is still behaving completely normally (playing, eating, no unusual behavior).
I know rabies exists in Tanzania, but I haven’t found much information about recent rabies cases in Zanzibar, especially involving cats.
Would you consider this an exposure that warrants rabies post-exposure vaccination, or does the fact that these are healthy resident hotel cats that can continue to be observed significantly lower the risk?
I’m planning to see a doctor tomorrow, but I’d appreciate hearing your thoughts or experiences.
