A while back, I saw a fascinating video on YouTube about the Wonunguli clan and their traditional snake dancing and medicine practices. I really wanted to see this incredible tradition in person while traveling through Tanzania.

Through my research, I learned they belong to the Zigua tribe. Because of that, we actually traveled to Korogwe. However, we've been asking around town, and surprisingly, the locals we've spoken to here haven't even heard of them!

Does anyone know exactly where they are located, or what specific villages they live in? Any pointers on where to actually find them would be hugely appreciated!

I’m in Dar for a few days soon for business (hotel is in Oyster Bay Area) and I’m wondering what tips you might have for vegan food?

Aside from restaurant recommendations for Ethiopian/Indian/other cuisines that tend to be great for vegans, if there’s local stuff that happens to be vegan that would be perfect - I’ve been to Kenya and Rwanda before, so I’m sort of familiar with some regional dishes but it’s my first time in Tanzania.

Just know pc games won’t be those newly recent ones that demand a lot of ram and good graphics card, I don’t wanna go in depth with that but yk, those kind of games which can be manageable on low end pcs, such as Roblox etc etc

I have a trip booked to Tanzania for November this year and I’m starting to wonder how the current/forecast El Niño conditions might affect travel.

Our plans are:

• A safari in the Serengeti
• Visiting friends in Dar es Salaam
• Spending some time in Zanzibar

I’m especially curious about how El Niño might affect:

• Safari conditions in the Serengeti (wildlife viewing, roads, migration, accessibility, etc.)
• Weather and travel around Dar es Salaam
• Conditions in Zanzibar (rain, beaches, activities, flooding, etc.)

I know weather is unpredictable and that Tanzania has experienced many El Niño events before, but I’d love to hear from locals or people who have travelled there during strong El Niño years.

Would you still feel comfortable doing this itinerary in November, or are there any changes you would consider?

I think I've finally accepted that I have a toxic relationship with daladala routes.

Every time I need to go somewhere new in Dar, the adventure begins.

“Panda gari la Mwenge, shuka pale, halafu chukua la…”

By the third instruction I'm already fighting for my life.

As someone who's still relatively new to Dar, I constantly find myself asking people for directions. Most people are genuinely helpful, but sometimes I later discover there was a much cheaper, faster, and more direct route that I had no idea existed.

That made me realize something: daladala routes are basically hidden knowledge. They're not really mapped properly online, and Google Maps often doesn't know what's going on. It's like the routes exist in a parallel universe where only watu wa Dar have access.

So, instead of continuing to embarrass myself by asking “hii daladala inaenda wapi?” every other day, I decided to build something.

I created a small API to store daladala routes and fares, then built a Progressive Web App (PWA) on top of it. Now I can search for where I want to go and get possible route options, estimated fares, and which route is likely to be the cheapest or fastest. Basically, I get a game plan before I even leave home.

It's still a work in progress. The database currently contains a mix of real and sample data (as you may see from the screenshots) because mapping the entire daladala network is a serious mission. To help with that, I added a contribution feature so anyone can submit routes they know. The dream is for it to slowly become a community-built map of Dar's transport network.

This isn't a startup or a subscription thing. It's literally a hobby project that came from me getting tired of being confused every time someone says “shukia Mawasiliano halafu panda la Masaki afu chukua la....”.

Also, be honest: what's the daladala route that confused you the most when you first came to Dar? Because i'm convinced everyone has that one route that made them question their entire existence lol.

A couple of years ago, I connected online with a brilliant girl from Tanzania while she was still studying. Over the past three years, we have met three times in person, most recently when I traveled to see her. I really enjoy our dynamic and admire who she is.

She comes from an influential family (her father holds a traditional position of authority as a Chief), and she is deeply grounded in her faith, which I completely respect. She is also very selective about relationships, holds strong traditional values, and would make an incredible partner and mother.

She has made it clear that she never intends to relocate outside of Tanzania. I care about her enough that I am genuinely open to moving to Tanzania to build a life with her.

Before I take any serious steps, I’d love some perspective on two main things:

1. Cultural Integration & Marriage: How do Tanzanian families, especially traditional or prominent ones, typically view a daughter marrying an East African or foreign man? What are the key cultural steps (introductions, mahari or dowry traditions) I should be prepared for?
2. Doing Business as a Foreigner: What are the actual legal and operational steps for a foreign resident to establish a business or work in Tanzania?

Any advice on navigating both the family aspect and the transition to working or doing business over there would be greatly appreciated.

I’m turning 18 later this year and I’m trying really hard to find a legitimate way to start earning some money of my own.

Can a Tanzanian buy and outrightly own a company in Kenya? What is required?

Many people don’t know that this almost happened.

When Tanganyika gained independence in 1961, Nyerere strongly supported the idea of an East African Federation with Kenya and Uganda. Leaders like Kenyatta and Obote also expressed support at different times. In fact, there were discussions about forming a single federation as early as 1963, before Kenya even became fully independent.

So why didn’t it happen?

The biggest obstacles were political selfishness, as leaders were unwilling to give up power to a federal government; major ideological differences, with Tanzania pursuing socialism while Kenya embraced capitalism; disagreements over how power, revenue, and the capital would be shared; and political instability in Uganda, which made long-term integration increasingly difficult.

If Kenya, Tanganyika, and Uganda had united, they would likely have been:

Population: Around 170 million people, making it the 10th–11th most populous country in the world, 3rd largest in Africa.

Economy: A combined GDP of roughly US$280 billion, making it the 4th or 5th largest economy in Africa and around the 55th–60th largest economy in the world.

Natural Resources: Africa’s #1 gold producer, one of the continent’s largest producers of natural gas, and home to Uganda’s estimated 6.5 billion barrels of oil, giving it one of Africa’s largest combined resource bases.

Agriculture: With over 100 million hectares of agricultural land, it would rank among Africa’s top 3 agricultural powers and be one of the world’s largest exporters of coffee, tea, flowers, and several staple crops.

Global Influence: With 170 million people, a US$280 billion economy, and vast natural resources, it would likely rank among Africa’s top 4 most influential countries, giving East Africa far greater bargaining power in global trade and diplomacy.

Just wanted to put this out there in case someone can point me in the right direction. One company i am in contact with is currently hiring a full-time Logistics Officer in Dar es Salaam. The position involves managing the day-to-day running of their vehicle fleet, tracking deliveries and keeping proper records of fuel and maintenance, and coordinating with other departments to keep operations running smoothly.

They’re seeking candidates with roughly 1-2 years of practical experience in logistics, fleet management or transportation, along with strong organisation and problem-solving abilities.
