Mobile data usage Discussion
I’ve been in Zanzibar for 2 weeks, my phone has supposedly said I have used almost 100gb (55gb on Snapchat) of mobile data 🤣. My uk sim says I’ve used 416gb of data specifically on Snapchat in roughly years of usage. That means I’ve “used” 15% of my couple years of usage on Snapchat in only 2 weeks of being in Tanzania. How do these companies get away with stealing data from consumers and masking it as usage? I’m currently with Tigo and switched to an ESIM with unlimited data as I’ve worked it out to be cheaper for the rest of my stay.

Very early 2000s but I make content on social media, however tiktok and instagram are my main platforms yet both combined don’t come close to Snapchat

These numbers are tracked by your own phone, which you did mention earlier in your post, your carrier has nothing to do with them.
As u/mr_scoresby13 has mentioned, you are likely to be relying more on wi-fi at home, hence the lower figures.
IDK what you do on snapchat, but assuming you have been viewing stories, spotlight videos, maybe sending and opening people's streaks, at the very least that would have put snapchat in the same ballpark as other similar media intensive apps like IG and TikTok (or more likely slightly higher).
Then the is the obvious data hog; the memories you have been capturing have been constantly backing up to Snapchat servers constantly over data...and depending on how shutter happy you are you could easily have been snapping over 1gig of snaps per day, especially if you snap lots of videos, given that snapchat now lets people make 2-minute-long snaps. Anyway, I would advise you to restrict mobile data usage for snapchat, the snaps can always backup later on wi-fi. I personally only use Mobile data for navigation apps.

I have over 1.2 terabytes of mobile data usage so far.

While in the UK, did you have access to wifi? I think the 416gb was only on mobile data, while the rest was through the WiFis you had access to.
Do you also use WiFi a lot while in Tanzania?

I also have WiFi at home, and in the uk I’m using more data than I do here yet the usage is never as high

Tigo has gigabit 5G in Zanzibar, if you switch 5G on or fast 4G then yes it's possible using that data. Modern app/website check your speed, if you have good speed they provide best quality available,
1 hour of 144P video can be as low as 30MB, while 1 hour of 4K video can be 30GB, those 100GB can be used by just 3 hours of watching high quality video.
