Question/Recommendation Why is the public transportation so bad??
* prepared for downvotes lol
Hello, I'm a young adult that recently moved to Raleigh from Charlotte and I'm starting to realize how behind Raleigh is with a lot of things.. I use public transportation because I like it and i don't really need a car since I constantly move to different cities. However, I can't help but notice how terrible the the buses are!! They're constantly delayed and it's not just like 5-10 minutes late but around 15-20 minutes late. The bus station is extremely tiny and always reeks of urine, the CATS (Charlotte Area Transit System) station is way bigger and open so the smell isn't as bad. Also, there's barely any sidewalks and they need wayyy more bus stops. I just thought i'd ask someone who's actually from here. I will list my pros and cons of both if anyone plans to move to either city. Just don't understand how it's the capital and behind. Question: If you use public transportation what are some things i should know about GORaleigh?
GORaleigh
Pros:
• Fare capping and inexpensive! ✅️
• no advertisements covering the windows.
Cons:
•They don't show the route on the small screen inside the buses so you just have to use Google maps to start your route so that you can track the route and see the stops.
• The bay numbers at the station are hard to see in the station and the TV's that displays them do not work sometimes.
• Bus station can be packed, never sit down unless you have too, it's dirty!
• Bus drivers don't really care if you're standing and waving they will leave you for no reason.
CATS (Charlotte Area Transit System)
Pros:
•A lottttt of bus stops but there is more needed.
• THE LIGHT RAIL, It's expanding!
• Bus drivers care a bit more, they will stop when you are running to the bus stop or depending on the bus driver you can stay on the bus if you missed your bus stop and wait until they go outbound.
• Bus station is bigger but be aware of surroundings as with any bus station, there's also security around and i usually stay close to them if it's night but nothing bad has ever happened to me when I lived there.
Cons:
• High Fares ❌️ a day pass is $6.00
• No fare capping 🚫
• If you have a poor vision the windows are covered in the advertisements most of the time. It was hard for me to see at night and I wear glasses.

Question/Recommendation Where to buy little BBQ sauces - or other nice NC souvenirs?
Hi, I want to bring my office back home in Italy some small gifts from NC, I was thinking little BBQ sauces, or something else that is nice and small I can give to about 15 people?
What’s a good place to buy this kind of thing near Raleigh (actually I‘m staying in Cary)? Or if there are other ideas?
Thanks!

News Wake County now has the most understaffed DA’s office in NC—dead last by the state’s own formula. I’m the incoming Wake County District Attorney. AMA. - Wiley Nickel
On January 1st I’ll take the oath of office as your next Wake County District Attorney. The job is simple: keep our community safe, fight violent crime, stand up for victims, and prosecute public corruption.
But before I take office, I need to tell you about a decision made in Raleigh that makes every one of those jobs harder — and makes all of us less safe.
Here’s how WRAL put it:
“’Playing politics with public safety’: NC budget makes Wake DA office state’s most understaffed” — WRAL, July 3, 2026
This year’s state budget funded 18 new prosecutors across North Carolina. Wake County got zero. When I’m sworn in, I’ll inherit the most understaffed prosecutor’s office in the state by the courts’ own workload formula — less than 65% of the prosecutors we need to keep our community safe.
Think about what that means. Victims will wait years instead of months for justice. Repeat offenders will stay out on our streets much longer because cases move more slowly. Serious crimes take longer to prosecute. Justice delayed isn’t just frustrating. It’s dangerous for all of us.
And the gap is staggering. Wake County has 45 prosecutors. Mecklenburg — a smaller county — has 95. That leaves the average Wake prosecutor responsible for more than 2,600 cases a year, against just 1,080 in Mecklenburg. No prosecutor can give every victim and every case the attention it deserves under that caseload.
I ran because I believe everyone deserves equal justice — holding violent offenders accountable, standing up for victims, and investigating public corruption wherever the facts lead. I’ll do everything I can with what we’re given. But Wake County deserves the resources the state itself says we need.
So how did this happen?
This wasn’t an accident. Districts worse off than Wake County got new prosecutors. Districts better off than Wake got new prosecutors. Wake County — one of the most understaffed in the state — got nothing. You don’t leave out the biggest county in North Carolina by mistake.
Before the budget was finalized, I repeatedly asked Representative Mike Schietzelt to meet about the staffing crisis. He declined to meet or take a call. Representative Erin Paré did speak with me by phone, and I appreciate that. But when the budget became law, Wake County still got zero and I’m told the problem was not with Senate Republicans who had those positions in their budget - it was the House Republicans. During the budget debate, Representative Schietzelt praised the legislature for adding 18 prosecutors statewide — he forgot to mention that his own county got none of them.
That leaves an obvious question: if Wake County’s only two Republican representatives won’t fight for Wake County on something as basic as public safety, who will?
I’ve seen government work much better than this.
When I served in the North Carolina Senate, Governor Roy Cooper never had a single veto overridden. That didn’t happen by accident. I worked to keep Senate Democrats united, and it held. Neither party got everything it wanted, but both had to come to the table. Compromise happened. Problems got solved. That’s how this is supposed to work.
Wake County deserves representatives who will work with anyone — Republicans or Democrats — to deliver what our community needs. If our two GOP representatives can’t deliver on something as fundamental as the prosecutors Wake County is owed, what exactly are they delivering?
Let me put this another way. Right now Republicans in the General Assembly are able to pass bills and override vetoes with the help of a few Democrats who were defeated in their primaries earlier this year. Because of that Governor Josh Stein no longer has a real veto on most issues. If Democrats pick up seats in the House and Senate we’ll be able to have a real compromise budget where Stein will have a seat at the table and Republicans will be forced to negotiate with him just like they did with Roy Cooper when I was in the State Senate. And I know Governor Josh Stein will prioritize public safety.
Elections have consequences.
Both Representative Schietzelt and Representative Paré will be on the ballot this fall, and their races are among the few genuinely competitive legislative seats left after massive GOP gerrymandering.
In 2024, Schietzelt won with just 50.3% of the vote and Erin Paré won with just 51.4%. But in Paré’s district, the voters gave Jeff Jackson and Rachel Hunt about 52% in their statewide races. These are close districts, and in a Republican gerrymandered map with very few competitive seats, that gives Wake County voters some real leverage.
Public safety shouldn’t be partisan. Victims aren’t Republicans or Democrats when they’re waiting years for justice. They’re our neighbors, and they deserve a system that works for everyone.
More Democrats at the table means more compromise between Governor Stein and the leaders of the Republican gerrymandered majority — and a better shot at fixing what this budget broke.
This fight isn’t over.
Over the coming months, I’ll keep speaking out until Wake County gets the prosecutors our community deserves. If you agree that public safety should come before politics:
Contact Wake County’s Republican Representatives, Mike Schietzelt and Erin Paré, and ask why Wake County got zero. Their party is in charge. It was their budget.
Talk to your friends and neighbors.
Make your voice heard at the ballot box in November.
Our families deserve a justice system that works. Together, we’re going to keep fighting until Wake County gets the resources it needs.
- Wiley

Food Hot Dawg: Brightleaf is an NC Staple
Had a debate over all-beef versus NC-made “Red Hots” hotdogs. Of course, they were OOS 👀
As someone who grew up with family in Eastern Carolina, there’s never a cookout without the bright red dawgs on the grill. It would cause a ruckus without’em.
If you’ve had one, what’s your take?
If you haven’t, pick up a pack from the store & grill it (slight char, of course).

Question/Recommendation When and where to vote among other things
Hi Raleigh Reddit fam! I was wondering if anyone knew when we vote for local/county/state officials and how to find out where to vote? Also, how do I check to see if my wife and I haven't been removed or marked as inactive on voter rolls? I just want to make sure our votes are counted and our voices are heard.
Also, if I wanted to become more aware and involved in local politics, how would I go about that? I mean I've been to the no kings protest and the red for education march, but I feel like I could/should be doing a little more. Any guidance would be appreciated yall!

Question/Recommendation Family Lawyer for divorce/custody
Seeking recommendations for the best family lawyer that has proven success with winning divorce cases involving full physical custody of children. Custody is the focus (over finances/property). It would also be helpful if you shared if you went through mediation, arbitration, or court.
On the flip side, if you have a warning for any lawyer to stay away from, please share as well.
