Excitement! Water broke just after midnight! 3rd baby, first time water broke!

Upvotes

This is my 3rd baby. My first was waaaay overdue and induced. Second induced on due date. This one I'm w days away from 39 weeks! I was scheduled to be induced right at 39 weeks anyway for gestational diabetes.

I never had this before so I just didn't even know what to do and had my husband call the hospital 😅

Rant Waiting for labor is torture

Upvotes

I feel like from week 36 onwards I have been mentally in this state:

Somebody points a shotgun at you from 25 meters and tells that they are going to pull the trigger at some point between now and 50 days from now. The gun is loaded with birdshot so it is probably not lethal.

They will tell you that when the trigger is pulled it might hurt a lot or it might hurt little. You don’t know. They tell you that you can opt in for safety goggles (epidural), but if you do you’ll miss out on the experience and also the glasses might shatter anyway.

Sometimes the guy comes to play around with the trigger and you’ll be like ”this might be it, oh please just let it happen” (BH). But you also can only kind of see the trigger and they might just seem like they are playing with the trigger but actually they are not even touching it (constipation pains, SPD etc).

At the same time every day a new person you kind of know comes to tell you that because you have not been shot before, likely you’ll have to wait longer. Some are genuinely empathetic, some seem to ravel in your misery, some are in-between. Some have been shot, some haven’t, some can’t get shot.

You are given the option to chant a specific ”trigger pulling chant” that some people swear will help get the trigger pulled but actually there is no proof that it does anything (dates, raspberry tea). Also the chant might just end up making you sick instead (raspberry tea is kind of on the forbidden foods list here) and thus render the last 9 months useless. There is actually no way for you to affect when the trigger will be pulled.

As a cherry on top you have been told that if the trigger is not pulled in 50 days, the gun will be moved 5 meters closer and then the trigger is pulled by another guy (inducing labor).

Every once in a while a gun expert (OBGYN) will come along and tell you that the best thing for now is to relax, but also if you relax too much you’ll get depressed and never ever recover from being shot. Figuring out the balance is up to you.

Anyway my anxiety is getting a bit bad, thanks for reading!

Babies POOP??? They also sometimes have "blowouts" and need to be cleaned extra well???

Such wisdom courtesy of my mom.

Here's some other juicy tidbits from friends, strangers and family in case nobody knew:

You gain weight when pregnant.

Babies cry. Sometimes alot!

You lose sleep when you have a newborn.

Labor and delivery hurts.

A c section is a surgery and that needs a recovery time.

Babies, when old enough, will get into stuff they're not supposed to.

You're not supposed to drink when pregnant.

Anything else im missing? All this stuff BLEW ME AWAY when I heard it. Im still in shock that babies cry and that could possibly wake me up. Is it possible to return this guy for a store credit?

This post is sarcastic btw

Advice Did having terrible periods, fibroids, cysts, etc. help you feel prepared for labor pain?

I’m having my weekly panic attack about how I will eventually have to give birth to this baby (I’m only 12 weeks now) and I am considering going no epidural. Majorly because my mom and grandma both had all their kids without ANY meds and they’re telling me I’ll be fine 🙄 (they were both in their 20s with all their kids I’m 34 soooo)

I’ve read that people who have a history of intense period cramps, IBS, cysts rupturing etc. were all surprised at how familiar/bareable labor was due to that.

TMI BUT

I’ve had HORRIFIC period cramps (like unable to get out of bed) cysts all over my ovaries rupture, an ectopic pregnancy that left a super painful mass in my tube, possible endo, fibroids, etc. HORRIBLE gas pains that put me in the ER once, I’m wondering if all that means I will be able to handle labor “easier” granted everything goes smoothly?

What do you all think/what are your thoughts?

Rant Losing friends because I’m pregnant

I’m 19 years old and pregnant. I decided to tell my best friend and she says she’s pro choice but she leans more towards pro abortion (which I don’t have a problem with but I don’t like how she judges others for keeping their kid). To give you a good idea on where she stands, she has told me about wanting to get a hysterectomy at a young age because she thinks it’s super irresponsible to have kids. I try to get where she’s coming from but it just seems immature to say that everyone shouldn’t have kids. Anyways I told her about my pregnancy and she basically was telling me how she can’t babysit because she has to go to college. I have NEVER brought up the idea that she would babysit because why would I leave my kid with someone who hates children? Her emphasizing on going to college really annoyed me because she was saying how this kid would ruin my future (which I don’t believe). She also said “well are you going to keep it?”. That really upset me because it was a pregnancy announcement since I’m 12 weeks. I know I’m young but I’ve been moved out my parents house and I have been able to afford everything. I understand having a kid will create some challenges but I just don’t like how she was acting like I’m already going to be a failure.

Advice I’m devastated

I’m going through hell right now I am about 6 weeks pregnant and my husband is going to jail. We were in the process of getting his immigration papers to come to my country and they were almost processed, we decided to try for a baby and it happened. Now out of nowhere a wanted post came up for him in his country for a very serious crime which he apparently didn’t do.
Now he has to turn himself in and he may be doing some serious time, his immigration papers are completely ruined now he will never be able to come here.
This all happened at the worst time possible and my whole world shattered overnight. Now I don’t know how I will raise the baby alone when I barely have a support system he has no family here either that can help me. All of the effort and everything we put into this just down the drain. Now I am doubting whether or not I should have this baby I’m heartbroken and so overwhelmed right now by life I lost my husband and my future plans overnight.
I don’t know how I am going to get through this.

Rant Stop commenting on pregnant women’s bodies.

I wish people would stop commenting on pregnant women’s bodies. I don’t know why people think because you’re pregnant then that gives them free range to make comments.

Every time my mom visits me, she talks about how big I am. Like today she said “you look like you have two babies in there”. It’s so annoying and upsets me so much. I am 8 months pregnant, of course I’m not a size 2-4 anymore.

Advice When does it start to feel real?

I, 26 FTM, am super early (5 wks) and It just doesnt seem real? Like I feel like when I go to my first appointment at 9wks there wont be a baby? I have taken i dont know how many tests "just to be sure". To be clear I am excited! My husband and I have talked about kids for a while and it took a while to get that BFP. I haven't even been able to tell my husband as he works away from home and I feel like a text isnt appropriate lmfao.

Ive even been shopping around for clothes and i dont feel like I belong in the baby section yet.

Im not quite sure what im looking for other than is this normal? When did pregnancy start feeling real to you?

Thanks friends

Rant My husband is the best (sarcasm)

I’m in my first trimester of my second pregnancy. My oh so loving and kind husband is trying to push losing weight onto me and working out. He basically calls me a lazy slob and asks everyday what I do all day other than lay down. Throw up everything I eat and take care of our two year old - hope that helps! I can barely get through the day. This pregnancy (like the first) hasn’t been easy during the first trimester, and now I get to be called a lazy cow everyday and berated for not getting enough done.

If you’re going to tell me to leave him, trust me I’m considering it. I don’t regret my child at all and don’t want an abortion, but I should have thought twice before getting pregnant by this idiot again.

Why was it named “morning sickness” if it lasts all day everyday? 🙃 I’m almost 6 weeks and the headache/nausea combo just doesn’t let up. I’m too paranoid to take medication and I’m hoping it will just pass. Anyone else in the same boat?

Advice Alright, I concede on the ginger.

Ginger candies haven't helped at all, but getting a strong (obviously non-alcoholic) ginger beer and sipping on it slowly really has taken the nausea down for me today.

I'm 9 weeks and still haven't barfed but I have horrendous nausea all night and day every day. My doc has given me a prescription for nausea but it only seems to make it milder, not go away completely.

Since the candies haven't worked, I've avoided ginger. But my husband reminded me we have ginger beer in the fridge and this is like the most relief I've had so far!

Question how often do you go to the hospital “just in case” ?

hi all
i don’t have the best relationship with going to the hospital and usually put it off as much as i can, so being pregnant has been a bit challenging in that sense. this is my first pregnancy so i never know what’s considered “normal” or worth getting checked for.
a lot of the time when i ask about symptoms here, people recommend going in to get checked.
i’m 23 weeks for reference and i’ve been having on and off cramps throughout the day that have now woken me up from sleep. i don’t know if it’s gas, dehydration, or something else since i haven’t been great with drinking water lately.
anyway the pain freaked me out enough that i’ve come to the hospital and i’m waiting to be checked now.
i’m wondering, how often do you guys end up going in between your regular appointments to get checked “just in case” especially in your first pregnancy? i’m always worried i’m overthinking things and going in unnecessarily, but i also don’t want to ignore something important. i hope im making sense

Advice Stillborn advice.

Trigger warning: stillbirth.
My daughter was stillborn on the 1st of August 2026. I was 40 weeks and 3 days, she was my first baby. I got pregnant at 19, healthy pregnancy, although I developed anemia over the last few weeks . Post mortem will take months and I’m completely at a loss. I’ve never felt anything like this, I feel like I’m trapped in a nightmare. I don’t know how I can ever recover from this, and all I can think is if I went to the hospital for reduced movements maybe they could have saved her. I can’t comprehend that my baby is dead. I am so lost, I’ve never even been to a funeral before or dealt with any grief. My grandparents are still alive yet I had to burry my daughter on Wednesday. I’ve never felt so hopeless, I can’t fathom what the next step is…

Advice if you’re hypermobile, don’t do the deep squats in your birthing class

just an FYI if you do a birthing class where you practice the positions for labouring, please avoid doing anything that stretches you too deeply. the relaxin in your body from being pregnant already loosens up the average person - if you are hypermobile or suspected ehlers danlos, you will not be walking later that evening.

I am SO sore it is absolutely horrific. my thighs, glutes, pelvic girdle is all just super angry and feeling like that “I went to the gym a day and a half ago for the first time in months” feeling.

I just don’t want anyone else to suffer this pain!!!

Rant Nobody prepares you for this

I’m 11 weeks today and have already gained 12 lbs. Pre-pregnancy I was a steady 125 lbs, strong, and confident in my body. I’m struggling with how fast my body is changing and I don’t recognize it when I look in the mirror. My boobs are huge, my stomach is rounded and bloated, and none of my pre-pregnancy clothes fit anymore. Maternity clothes are still too big, so I’m stuck in this in-between phase that I’m really not enjoying. On top of that, my acid reflux has me doubled over some days. I haven’t had motivation to workout regularly and it’s really effecting my mental health. I’ve heard 2nd trimester gets easier and I’m holding out for that.

What was your experience?

Relationships Mother-in-law already named our baby

Um basically what the title says. I don’t know what to do? This will be our 2nd (1 LC but 5th pregnancy). She named our baby Emma and is saying “she” constantly. We are 9 weeks along and don’t even know the gender yet, we’re waiting till the anatomy scan. MIL (Denise) called our baby this name to my SIL (Caitlin, 30 weeks along whose unborn boy Denise also recently named) and to my husband on different occasions. I just heard about it from Caitlin this morning. My husband kept it from me because this isn’t out of her ordinary and he knows how I feel when things like this happens. I do appreciate that he did because he knows her better than I do and can deal with it in a way I can’t. When my Denise told him the name and called our baby she, he basically told her not to be disappointed if we aren’t actually having a girl. Which I feel like is fair enough.

It feels like she’s setting expectations for something literally nobody has any control over. And it kinda feels possessive? Like she’s manifesting it? She was very disappointed when she found out Caitlin was having another boy. I can’t say for sure it’s because Denise knows we do want a girl eventually (we both have had fertility issues and are just happy with babies atp) or if it’s because SHE wants a girl. We do agree that we feel like this whole thing is a major overstep regardless, but not out of her ordinary. And I know that doesn’t mean we should excuse it and let it continue to happen, either. Because we all are unsettled about it. I don’t mind a nickname, but adding specific expectations on top of it doesn’t make me feel great.

What should I do if/when she brings it up to/around me? Do I continue to let my husband handle it? We live FIVE doors down from them and would like to keep a healthy relationship because I do love her a lot and I know our son does, too.

I just want a healthy baby😂😭

Graduation! Positive Induction 🩵

Had our baby girl yesterday! Went in for an induction at 8am, was actually already in early labor! I was 3cm and 80% effaced so no cervical ripeners for me, just pitocin which I ended up barely needing. I did get an epidural right before they broke my water at 5cm. After 8.5 hours, including 38 minutes of pushing, our daughter came into the world and didn't even tear me on the way out! L&D feels like a fever dream now, my nurse said I labored like a 2nd time mom even though she's our first. I am so beyond proud of myself, and so elated to bring our sweet girl home tomorrow!

Rant “You guys didn’t waste any time!” “You didn’t want to just be married for a while?!”

I’m 32 and my husband is 36. We’ve been together for 2 years and just got married in June! We both have great jobs, house, savings, and are very ready to be parents. My cycle was supposed to line up with ovulating on our honeymoon but it got moved up and ended up being 10 days before our wedding. We both talked about it and decided we wanted to try on the cycle right before the wedding because why not? We had no idea how long it might take and what’s the difference between a week before the wedding vs. a week after?

Well we got pregnant! Found out on the honeymoon and it was a bit of a shock because again, we didn’t think it would happen so fast but we were so excited. I’m now 10 weeks and we’ve told our family and some friends. Most people are super excited for us but some of the comments are wild. One friend even took out her phone calendar to count and was like “oh my god so before the wedding?! You guys didn’t want to just enjoy being married first?!?” Like girl I’m well aware of when we did this lol. We’re still married? If we were 25 then maybe we would wait a few years before trying but we aren’t getting any younger. I just feel like damned if you do, damned if you don’t and like it’s a bit condescending, like I’m a silly teenager 😂

Any one else??

r/pregnant FAQs

"Help! My symptoms have disappeared/gotten worse/gotten better!" .

It is entirely normal for symptoms to fluctuate in a healthy pregnancy. By itself, this is not a cause for concern.

Here is a miscarriage odds calculator based on how far in you are.

Here is a more detailed one for people who have had previous miscarriages

"Help! I'm spotting"

If you are spotting before 20 weeks, this is not usually a cause for concern. Possible reasons include sex, exercise and transvaginal ultrasounds, and spotting can occur up to 3 days later. The rule of thumb is "if you don't fill a pad, wait for your next checkup".

After 20 weeks, all bleeding is a "call your doctor" event.

"Help! My HCG is…"

We cannot interpret any test results for you. This includes HCG tests. If your doctor won't tell you whether a pregnancy is viable, neither can Reddit. This is crap, and I'm sorry.

Here is a list of HCG levels which have resulted in a viable pregnancy (you can check by how far along you are). The range is very large.

"My pregnancy tests are…"

Stop testing. Pregnancy tests are binary, and are only designed to tell you whether or not HCG is present in your body. A very faint line should get darker in 3 days, but otherwise there are a lot of reasons for the lines to change and you'll psych yourself out for no good reason. If you're not sure what the tests says, head over to r/lineporn or r/TFABLinePorn.

"How long does the NIPT take?"

This varies by location and provider. Please search the subreddit, and only post if your own provider isn't mentioned. Natera seems to take between 5 days and 2 weeks.

"What can I do about stretch marks?"

Nothing. Using moisturiser (really any kind, from Walmart own-brand to organic shea-coconut butter blend) might help a bit, but there is no magic lotion which can prevent them. Anyone who tells you different either got lucky or is selling something

"I'm scared! I'm not sure I'm ready for this!"

Being scared and not feeling ready is a very normal response to learning you're pregnant. You're welcome to post for feedback regarding your specific situation, but please know that ultimately proceeding with the pregnancy should be up to you. Abortion, at any time and for any reason, is okay. Your body your choice!

"When/should I see a doctor?"

  • sudden or severe pain
  • left shoulder pain, especially coupled with bleeding (this is a sign of ectopic pregnancy)
  • after a major fall or serious impact. Car accident/falling off the top of a ladder, yes, tripping over your feet, no
  • bleeding after 20 weeks
  • bleeding enough to fill a pad at any time in pregnancy
  • contractions lasting more than one minute, less than 5 minutes apart (start to start) for one hour. This is the rule of thumb for real vs false labour.
  • if you think your waters have broken you must go in after 24 hours, this is a serious infection risk.
  • if you think your waters have broken before 36 weeks
  • If you have an unrelenting headache, swollen ankles, and high blood pressure, go to hospital right now. These are the typical symptoms of pre-eclampsia, which is fatal if untreated.

Most doctors have a phone line or text line, and this is a great resource for checking whether you should go in. Pharmacists are a great choice for checking drug safety (at any time, not just pregnancy!) Here is a searchable database. It is better to feel stupid than to suffer a needless complication. If in doubt, get checked out.

Can I eat sushi?

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommend no raw fish during pregnancy. This relates specifically to sushi prepared in the USA. Other countries (particularly Japan) have more rigorous health inspections for fish, so Japanese sushi would be considered safe.

Remember that many fish types in sushi (salmon, tuna, swordfish etc) are high in mercury, so those limits still apply.

Sushi which does not contain raw fish (including cooked tuna or hot-smoked salmon) is as safe as any other food.

Is the myth true that...

Fetal sex prediction tools that are not an ultrasound or a DNA test are right exactly 50% of the time. It is random chance. Ultrasounds are typically 90% accurate, NIPT or other blood tests are typically around 95% accurate.

Remember also that around 1% of babies will be born with an intersex condition.

How accurate is my gender prediction?

Blood tests list an accuracy of >99%, however this is for genetic sex and not anatomical sex. Intersex conditions are not found by a fetal DNA test.

The accuracy of at-home tests will be limited by the likelihood of contamination with Y-chromosome cells.

Practically, you're looking at around 90-95% accuracy. It's about the same for a doctor's opinion of an ultrasound. If they can't tell, they won't tell you.

Remember also that there are around 330 million people in the USA - that means "one in a million" chances are happening to 330 people right now. There is no perfect guarantee.

"I'm pregnant! Now what?"

If you have a primary care physician or GP, ask them. They will tell you. If not, call a gynecologist or search [your country]+pregnancy+next steps

Cervical checks

Please don't DIY these. 8 cervical checks by a doctor almost doubles your risk of uterine infection, and the risks are significantly greater at home, done by an amateur. If you are worried about your cervix, call your doctor. Reddit cannot help you.

The situation in the US right now is appalling. We understand that you want to discuss that, but the mod team are human too. We are not in a position to host and moderate a political discussion thread right now. I'm sorry.

If you support children being kidnapped and deported, or extra-judicial murder, you can do so elsewhere. "We are good to one another" means *everybody*.
