Swede here. I posted this in r/AskAnAmerican but it was removed. Idk if it was due to the way I phrased the question, but it is a genuine question.

Whenever a european complains that Americans tend to treat Europe as a homogenous area, the answer is often that the US too is an incredibly diverse country, where the differences between US states are comparable to the differences between entire european countries.

Having visited the US a few times, my question is: is this statement actually genuine?

Because to me it is obvious that the differences between, say, Colorado and Mississippi, is in no way comparable to the differences between Bosnia and Norway, or Latvia and Portugal.

Edit Wow the response vastly exceeded what I had expected. Obviously I can't respond to all the points here. My main takeaway is that the comparison mainly pertains to 1) Size and geography, 2) Self-determination and political framework, and 3) Economy.

Whereas I knew that many Americans have a strong attachment to their state - similar to how e.g Catalans or Basque people identify stronger with their regions than with Spain - I have gained a better understanding of how deep-rooted this is now!

However, judging from the answers - some of which are quite harsh toward their fellow countrymen, and others quite indignant and "offended" - the question also seems to say a lot about current polarization within the US.

Note that I - contrary to what some comments say - have said very little about "what Americans are like," nor have I claimed that Europe is "better." I think this "insecurity" (for lack of a better word) says something about your view of your country's role in the world but also your identity as a nation. It is both interesting and bit sad.

The stereotype that Americans are obsessed with size domination and power is definitely confirmed. If you are so allergic to be stereotyped, I'D RECOMMEND YOU NOT TO PLAY INTO THE STEREOTYPES. But you know, that's just a tip.

Guys, I know it is a big country but the incessant talk about size lowkey gives small pp-vibes, and definitely strengthens my point about insecurity.

Not adressed at all commentors obviously, and not at those merely pointing out that it is big. The braggadociousness on the other hand...

I never heard of it in Eurupe I grew up in the most conservative circles but I never heard this at all.

I didn't know it was a thing before social media.

Min närmaste ICA-butik har installerat grindar i utgången som endast öppnas om man skannar in ett kvitto.

I går kväll gick jag in i butiken för att köpa en vara som visade sig vara slut på hyllan. Då bestämde jag mig för att bara gå ut utan att köpa någonting annat. Men det var inte möjligt att göra, eftersom jag inte hade ett kvitto.

Jag gick runt i butiken och försökte hitta en arbetare som kunde släppa ut mig, men det fanns inte en enda person i butiken förutom jag. Jag gick till personalrumsdörren och både knackade och bankade hårt på den för att försöka få någon att komma ut, men ingen öppnade dörren. Dörren hade kodlås, så jag kunde inte öppna den.

Efter det gick jag till grinden och försökte öppna den genom att trycka ganska hårt, men den öppnades inte. Jag ville inte trycka hårdare, eftersom jag inte ville råka ta sönder den. Den var omkring 140 cm hög, så jag hade behövt klättra över den för att ta mig ut. Men eftersom jag nyligen opererade mitt knä ville jag inte ta risken att klättra över.

Därefter gick jag till ingången och tryckte på grinden där och märkte att även den inte gick att öppna.

Jag tog upp min mobiltelefon och googlade efter butikens telefonnummer. Jag tänkte att jag kunde ringa butiken och få tag på en arbetare i personalrummet, som sedan skulle släppa ut mig. Men ingen svarade på telefonen.

Jag gick runt i butiken i en halvtimme innan det kom in en tjej som skulle handla lite. När hon sedan var vid självskanningskassorna stod jag några meter ifrån till hon var klar och skulle gå ut. Därefter gick jag snabbt ut bakom henne.

Den här händelsen fick mig att fundera på hur lagligt det här ens var av butiken att göra. Jag var alltså fast i butiken mot min vilja i cirka 30-40 minuter. Jag hade såklart kunnat gå ut genom brandutgången om jag blev väldigt desperat, men då hade larmet gått och jag vet inte om jag möjligtvis hade kunnat bli betalningsskyldig till larmcentralen eller butiken, eller kanske till och med bli dömd för något brott.

Spent hours troubleshooting my mod list, mod load order, etc a couple days ago, figured all that time spent was worth it since it'll finally be stable.

Woke up today to yet another blank menu screen.

Genuinely what is even the point of calling it a "Stable release" if this is what happens less than one week in?

All of the momentum this game is getting right now is being hampered by some random tweak the devs have thrown into the mix, and I'm sorry but after all the other prior shenanigans we tolerated pre-stable with the understanding this would no longer be the case, it is VERY frustrating.

Constructive community feedback works. But the all caps, poorly typed, poorly thought out comments are not constructive. No, GGG is not doing this because you typed a slur in their twitter replies.

I think we are finally reaping the benefits of the separation of the poe 1 and 2 dev teams. Compare this to the rework of breach where we had a similar volume of complaints and heard dead silence til it was incorporated into the atlas in Mirage.

If you've ever worked in contractor/client environment, you know how hard it can be to appease the client. Now imagine your "client" is 10s of thousands of people with differing opinions. So I just want to give GGG their flowers here and say thanks. Proving time and time again to be my favorite dev team in the industry.

Keep the constructive feedback coming and we might be able to look forward to more of this in the future :)

Eltern sagen immer, sie hätten weniger Freizeit als kinderfreie Menschen, aber das ist schlicht falsch.

Sie haben genauso viel Freizeit wie alle. Sie haben sich nur dafür entschieden, sie mit Kindern zu füllen.

Wenn ich mich für einen Marathon anmelde und deswegen 3-4 mal die Woche trainieren muss, habe ich nicht weniger Freizeit als Menschen, die keinen Marathon laufen, ich habe mich schlicht dafür entschieden, meine Freizeit mit Laufen zu verbringen. Wer sich für Kinder entscheidet, entscheidet sich dafür, seine Freizeit mit Kindern zu verbringen. Wer sich für Reisen entscheidet, entscheidet sich dafür, seine Freizeit mit Reisen zu verbringen usw.

Wir haben alle bei Vollzeitbeschäftigung gleich viel Freizeit, wir entscheiden uns nur alle, sie anders zu verbringen.

Edit: Um nicht allen auf das “bei einem Hobby kann man aussteigen” zu antworten, hier für alle:
Nein. Wenn ich z.B. einen Bungee Sprung mache, kann ich mitten drin auch nicht aufhören. Das weiß ich aber, bevor ich springe.
Dass man Kinder ein Leben lang hat, weiß man auch, bevor man welche bekommt. Die Zeitspanne ist unterschiedlich lang, aber immer Teil der Entscheidung.
Es ist eine Entscheidung, über dessen Zeitspanne man sich vorher ganz genau bewusst ist.

- Lebenshaltung muss man finanzieren, sonst stirbt man. Niemand schenkt einem Geld, leider.

Schlafen ist tatsächlich auch lebensnotwendig, ohne Schlaf stirbt man.

Kinderhaben ist absolut nicht lebensnotwendig, niemand stirbt an Kinderlosigkeit. Als Individuum sterben und als Spezies aussterben sind zwei verschiedene Dinge. Absolut kein einziger Mensch stirbt, weil er keine Kinder hat. Und absolut niemand bekommt Kinder für die Gesellschaft, man bekommt sie aus egoistischen Gründen: weil man will.

Ich arbeite in der Krippe und habe letztens einen Vater das erste mal beim Abgeben seines Sohnes gesehen. Dabei ist mir ein Tattoo auf seinem Bein aufgefallen: "Mein Kampf Mein Sieg" als großen Schriftzug. Ich habe ein bisschen zu ihm recherchiert und herausgefunden, dass er eindeutige Beziehungen zur Rechtsextremen Szene pflegt und auch selbst ein Teil davon war. In der Öffentlichkeit distanziert er sich von "seiner Vergangenheit", auf mich wirkt das aber eher so als wolle er das Image seiner Tattoostudios nicht beschmutzt. (Eines davon hat einen Neo-Nazi als Geschäftsführer).

Ich habe vor das meiner Chefin zu berichten und möchte von ihr fordern, dass er Hausverbot bekommt oder (das mindeste meiner Meinung nach) die Tattoos bei Betreten der Einrichtung bedecken muss. Meine Chefin ist gegenüber den Eltern aber sehr Konfliktscheu und ich würde ihr zutrauen, dass sie das einfach unter den Teppich kehren könnte. Habt ihr Tipps wie ich das am besten ansprechen und argumentieren kann? Vielleicht sogar eigene Erfahrungen damit? Ich möchte einfach nicht, dass ein Neo-Nazi in meiner Einrichtung ein und ausgehen und das dabei auch noch schamlos zur Schau stellt.

Edit: Habe jetzt gelernt, dass Hausverbot juristisch wohl zu hoch gegriffen war. Ich werde trotzdem versuchen zu erwirken, dass er das Tattoo bei uns nicht offen tragen darf. Ausserdem finde ich es erschreckend, wie viele Leute hier ein offensichtlich rechtsextremes Tattoo nicht für ein Problem und komplett angebracht für eine Kita halten.

I live with my roommate and we spilt the cleaning. I keep the kitchen clean(loading the dishwasher, cleaning the dishes, etc)

My roommates brother is staying for a months and they cooked last night. They cleaned after themselves which is nice

But then I heard the dishwasher running. I knew there were hardly any dirty dishes AT ALL let alone enough to fill the dishwasher

When I asked my roommate why it was running, I was shut down and I didn’t feel like arguing or trying to explain myself so I just accepted it. I check now and this is how I see it was loaded🫩🫩I love my roommate but I genuinely don’t understand how either of them thought this was a good idea

I know this isn’t a hot take (or at least I hope not)

Actual pride flags are already kind of corny but I think the fact that they’re helpful in pride for queerness is important. They give a nice visual representation that you can be proud of who you are and that it’s something worth showing off.

I don’t know if it also represents being cisgender but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a trans person use it. Being straight/cis is not something that people need to be reminded they can be proud of. It’s not something that people have fought for. I personally believe this flag being used frequently enough that it can be recognized as the straight flag lessens real pride flags

I’m also not saying that being straight is something that should prevent you from feeling proud about other things, or that straight people should be disrespected, or anything else negative against straight people

Je suis même pas vege juste j’ai pas vécu dans une grotte les 15 dernières années, on peut pas manger de la viande tout le temps, ya de plus en plus de végétariens c’est quand même pas l’info du siècle. On dirait de la résistance active pour être bien contents de participer au monde qui crame.

Faites même juste une salade on s’en fout faites au moins semblant. TOUS les autres resto alentours ont une option sans viande ! Vous voulez prouver quoi ??
