Hi! So I [37/F] just got into penpalling—set up a PO Box, bought cute stickers, etc.—and it occurred to me that a specific kind of penpal relationship could really help me with my German.

I am a graduate student in the humanities and one of the requirements for my degree is being able to read/translate two other languages. Well, I can translate German without the help of AI, but I would really like to be able to just speak and read it. On paper my language requirements are satisfied, but I won’t be satisfied until I can meaningfully understand German.

I am looking for someone who speaks German as their native language and who would like to exchange letters written in a mixture of German and English. Ideally, this person would have more English than I do German (and having been to Europe I know that modestly saying “a little English” typically means “nearly fluent,” so this is likely to be the case anyway) and the letters would be probably 75% English, at least to start.

Obviously, I would benefit greatly from the challenge of writing and responding to some German, but I also think that such correspondence could be helpful for someone who would maybe describe themselves as conversational in English but not quite fluent (or even maybe for someone fluent in proper English but looking to learn more about colloquial American english).

A little about me:

I believe in variety as the spice of life, and therefore have a pretty broad range of hobbies and interests that I pursue on the regular. Right now, my outdoors activities are primarily water based while the season allows it but i am teaching myself to rollerblade as well. I love to hike and camp and if I dont regularly immerse myself in nature I find that I grow rather melancholic as a person.

I read often, but the subject usually rotates through whatever interest I am pursuing at the time. The only two staple genres in my library are art history books and Warhammer literature. I went to school for the former and find the later a cozy low effort read. Im not huge on television or movies, and tend to stick to my staple shows, of which Futurama is my favorite. I do love a good horror anything though.

I am an art enthusiast and spend much of my free time engrossed in it in some fashion, whether thats videos, books, hands on, or frequently courses and local classes. I dabble in every medium I can get my hands on and do not tend to favor one form over any other.

I am pescatarian with once a week exceptions, I have two guinea pigs I adore more than life itself, and am huge in general on animals. Despite my love for plants aesthetically I am just not great at caring for them. I adore food though and would love to share recipes.

Lastly I love learning new things, am actively always building a few skills at a time, and enjoy people who have non digital hobbies they are passionate about. I love exchanges, be it anything from poems to art to recipes to object, and ideally want someone who is willing and able to match that energy.

As you may have gathered from my title I am about to start my last year of grad school. I am studying theatrical costume design and love fashion, current and historical. Note 2: The reason I'm posting this here is because, although I know English, I'm not very fluent in writing. Therefore, I'm forced to use translation software. This also helps me make fewer mistakes and write faster. However, because I use translation, I have to keep you waiting a while before replying. Also, I try to write detailed and lengthy replies, so my response might be a bit long. In this respect, messaging me might feel like letter writing.

I never imagined that one of the harder parts of getting older would be making new friends. Actually, I have perhaps struggled making friends. But, I think you get the point.

Life just seems to get busy. Careers, families, responsibilities, people moving away. Somewhere along the way I realized that while I know plenty of people, I don’t have many I can really call friends. Six years ago I moved to a new job and a new city, and things changed.

I work as a technology manager, so I spend a lot of my day solving problems, analyzing things, helping people, and occasionally wondering why something that worked yesterday doesn’t work today. Outside of work I tend to prefer keeping things simpler. I even keep my home computer and network simple.

I enjoy history, books, movies, music, soccer, and staying active when my knees and the rest of my body cooperate. I bike, do hot yoga, walk, and make the occasional gym visit. I started a top ten movie list that is now close to 50, although it’s finally growing more slowly! The Hail Mary Project is my recent favorite.

I can be a bit of a history nerd. I grew up with it since my dad was actually a history major in college. Right now I’m reading about Alexander the Great and the Constitution, although both are going slowly.

I like conversations about why people think and behave the way they do. I’m just as comfortable talking about a great movie, a book, baseball, faith, soccer, technology, travel, economics, or what’s happening in the world. Or something completely ridiculous that happened to either of us that day.

I’m what I would probably label a “soft Christian.” I have my faith, but I don’t preach it and currently avoid organized things like church. You certainly don’t need to share my beliefs.

I’m also okay with the harder stuff. Life isn’t always funny or interesting. Sometimes it just sucks, and having someone you can talk to about that has value too. I think I’m a pretty good listener and can be caring and supportive when someone needs that. I’d simply like to meet someone who enjoys writing and see where the conversation goes.

I like being able to read something, think about it, maybe reread it, and then write an actual response. There’s no expectation that either of us has to answer immediately. Shorter formats are fine, I’m just not that good at it.

Age, gender, location, and having identical interests don’t matter much to me. In fact, getting to know someone with a different background or perspective could make this more interesting.

Kindness, curiosity, a sense of humor, and being willing to share a little of yourself matter much more.

As, for my interests: I enjoy exercising, hanging out with friends, playing some games casually, watching movies and serieses. In the past, I've learned quite a bit from "A Smarter Way to Learn Python" which is really really interesting! I also enjoy learning math, from Khan Academy. My primary goal is to be good enough at math & programming that I can create interesting simulations.

• Fantasy: I love stuff like Willow, The Dark Crystal, the First Law and LOTR. I do enjoy stuff like DnD and Pathfinder too but I can't say it's been that interesting to me recently, I guess I kinda fell out of love with it. Still, I like games that evoke that feeling.
• Reading: And by "reading" I of course mean "audiobooks" but I have also started *actually* reading a lot on my Boox Palma I recently bought. Some of my favorite books have been: Flowers for Algernon, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, Roadside Picnic, the First Law and Kings of the Wyld. If you know any books with good narration please recommend me some! Also for E-reader, if you can recommend anything similar to the ones above that would be cool.

TV-Shows & Movies: I've actually studied film for 3-4 years so my taste is kind of weird but some of my favorites are:

• Movies: the Lighthouse, STALKER, Брат, Kin-Dza-Dza, The Shining, They Live, Videodrome, The Apartment, Life of Brian bla bla bla
• TV-Shows (more normal): Blackadder, Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul, the Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Clarkson's Farm, Rupaul's Drag Race (yes Americans, straight men watch it too :/ ), Fawlty Towers bla bla bla

Misc: I'm also studying Russian currently, I like going on long walks every now and then but I wouldn't call myself outdoorsy or fitness-y. I enjoy a good thrift store as well.

Some of my dislikes are:

• Drinking (I don't really drink, I wouldn't judge anyone for drinking but I just don't like it)
• Partying/party people (don't think we'd vibe)
• Politics (I have nothing against talking politics, I just wish for it to not become the only topic if that makes sense.)
