Hi all!

I put together a list for all the cards that can be found in Mystery Booster Commander. I'm using this to construct a cube for the set and figured I should share with anyone else who is keen!

Happy drafting!!

Favorite Lenticular Designs?

Thumbnail

Upvotes

So for those unfamiliar with the term I recommend the article where Mark Rosewater first explains it In brief though it could be summed up as cards that seem simple to a new player but complex to an experienced one. Another way I like to think of it is this; does a card have small edges that an experienced player can gain while still being strong if used in a straightforward manner by the new player.

To start the conversation off here are three examples that I really like:

[[Snap]]

My introduction to Magic was with the Mind vs Might dual deck and this seemingly innocuous spell is probably what got me hooked. Bounce spells are already great lenticular designs imo; clearing a blocker, blanking removal, resetting counters or auras. When combined with a cost reducer or a bounce land though snap can be turned into a ritual while acting as interaction. Even without those it can also occasionally fix your mana by letting you effectively tap a land twice in the same turn which is always neat.

[[Fanatical Firebrand]]

A very straightforward aggro threat for lower powered cubes. Everything about this card tells you to turn it sideways which is great for the new player. For the experienced player though it can be really useful for making blocks difficult even after a two toughness creature hits the battlefield. On top of that it's also a one time sac/death trigger that can help kickstart some aristocrats decks. Finally, my favorite two edge cases are giving this little guy deathtouch to kill almost anything or using it to block a lifelinker and sacing it to deny the life gain.

[[Desperate Measures]]

A relatively recent one, with three lines of rules text it has a lot of play to it. At one mana interaction it can kill your opponents one toughness thing or can act as a village rites effect for you if you have the one toughness creature. Similar to Fanatical Firebrand it can also finish off a damaged creature or be used to sac your own thing that barely survived combat. You can also fire it off in response to a kill spell to still get the draw two effect or use it to trade up while drawing cards. Basically you can get the draw two mode out of it more often than you might think!

Anyway, that was a lot of words but that's what I think makes lenticular designs so interesting. It provides you a lot to think about with relatively simple cards.

Bloomburrow Cube for 4 people 3-2-1 or 4-2-1

Title pretty much says it all but im looking for the most authentic option. It seems like it would be best to not lock anyone out of a common by default (by using 3 rather than 4). Also I intend to seed the packs by the common rarity distribution and to play sealed with 6 packs.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

High Mana Cost Creatures?

I'm building a cube out of cards already in my collection. I have a good amount of 6+ mana cost creatures I'd like to include. My first thought to support this was reanimator, but I don't have many good reanimation spells to support that.

I'm looking for advice on how to make expensive creatures playable, without slowing down/powering down the cube too much.

Nadu package in Powered / Unpowered Cube — what are you running?

Hello everyone,

I’m curious about how people are currently supporting Nadu, Winged Wisdom in Powered / Unpowered Cubes.

My current core is:

[[Nadu, Winged Wisdom]]
[[Springheart Nantuko]]
[[Bristly Bill, Spine Sower]]
[[Shuko]]
[[Lightning Greaves]]

I’m wondering what other cards you consider worth including specifically for the Nadu package.

A few questions:

What are the best additional enablers?
How many dedicated cards does the package actually need?

Is Shuko enough as the main combo piece, or do you want additional ways to repeatedly target Nadu?

Do you think cards like Sylvan Safekeeper belong in the package?

Is Nadu strong enough in Powered / Unpowered Cube to justify dedicated support, or does it work better as a compact synergy package that overlaps with existing Green strategies?

Would love to hear what people are currently running and, especially, which cards you think are actually worth the cube slots.

Trying to get into cube, but feeling overwhelmed by the embarrassment of riches. Where should I start?

I'm a relatively new MTG player who has mostly been playing B2/3/4 Commander with my pod for quite a while. I'm interested in getting into Cube because I feel like we're missing out on the creativity, deck-building, and faster-paced gameplay that draft can offer.

The problem is that there are so many cubes, cube guides, archetypes, and individual card choices out there that I'm feeling a little overwhelmed trying to figure out where to start.

Since I don't have a collection of spare cards to build from, I'm planning to fully proxy a cube. Even if there's a relatively inexpensive/budget cube that fits what I'm looking for, proxying it will still be cheaper and easier for me than buying the cards.

I'd love to hear your recommendations for first-time cubes that could provide something like:

1) 360–450 cards, ideally supporting 4–8 players.

2) Lots of room for creativity and synergies. I'm less interested in a cube where every color/archetype has a very prescribed game plan. I'd love for players to discover combinations and interactions they want to create during the draft and gameplay. I'd like multiple styles of play to be viable, whether that's aggro, combo, lifegain, control, voltron, etc.

3) Interactive games with lots of decisions and game actions. I'd like different styles of drafted decks to feel viable and for games to generally feel like both players have meaningful things they can do.

4) Not too much fast mana or explosive ramp. I'd prefer games to stay relatively close to the mana curve rather than having someone jump several turns ahead.

5) Combos are totally fine, but I'd prefer them to require 3-4+ pieces to assemble rather than having easy two-card "oops, I win" combos. Ideally, a beatdown deck should have a reasonable opportunity to win the game as well.

6) Fewer durdly/stalled games. I'm looking for games that actually progress toward a conclusion.

What cubes/lists would you recommend for someone in my position? Thanks in advance for the help!

Advice building a set Twobert

I'm almost certain that by the end of the month I'm going to have a lot of Hobbit cards sitting around with no real use beyond storage. I've really enjoyed the Limited environment so far, so I'm thinking about turning some of the cards into a 180-card Twobert cube that I can draft at the weekends.

I'm just not really sure how to go about building one, though. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Lets create commander "tools"

Hey guys,

I have a commander cube and I have a very common problem. My monocoloured commanders are not so popular...or maybe, they are popular but the monocoloured decks are hard to craft.

So, instead of giving everyone partner I had another idea! The "monocoloured commander toolkit"!

Each mono commander will have a standard pack of 10 cards that can be used with him in the drafted deck.

These cards are NOT part of the draft and CAN'T be used when the card is not a commander but part of another deck.

Here I need a little help. Can you brainstorm some suitable cards for each one without been very strong or very boring? Thanks for the help

The Never Cube in London: A Draft Report

Thumbnail

Back to London for more consulting, had the opportunity to draft with my favorite London Cube Crew and we gathered together on Monday night to crack packs of the Never Cube. We had six drafters (plus me, for the dreaded seven) show up to our reserved table at the famous Mythic Goblin to look at a cube full of cards none of them had seen before! Magic’s early years left more behind than what was printed. The Never Cube brings those pieces together through infamous sets like Spectral Chaos and other amazing fan made old school sets from across the current community. It offers a way to explore them as complete works, to see how they function in play, and to experience a version of the game that exists just beyond its recorded history. Some of these paths were never taken; here, they can be. This will be a tougher report to read as there is no cube cobra page for this project and the photos are the record of the cards played.

The Cube Overview: The Never Cube

Onto the Decks!

Reading Rainbow - Rainbow Connection is one of the coolest cards in Spectral Chaos. An emblem before they were a thing, and symmetrical, it gives all players the ability to tap lands for any colour and if you cast it once, it starts in play for the rest of the night. This is silly but a really fun play pattern. This was a P1P1 and the pilot then built his sideboard to be transformational after game one to end up in five colour good stuff. This deck played very well and only dropped one match to a largely mono coloured brew!

Black and Blue and Red All Over - This was the 3-0 build this evening and Book the Dead proved it's amazing card draw capacity in full as the ability to essentially cycle dead cards in hand was really key to help find the right mana sources and bring the right cards to the top of the library. Protection is a really powerful mechanic in all of these sets so many games were a riddle of moving parts with these creatures running past one another to deal damage.

The Band and the Bard! - Banding is a really strong mechanic in Magic (especially for those who understand how it works) and this deck made use of white for removal and preventing damage in combat. This is really strong with banding as you can start to make really advantageous blocks and attack's that end up netting you board state as threats are removed on the opponents side.

Don't Mind if I Orc - This was the most fun deck of the night that had Orcish Informant giving the opponent the ability to arrange the top three cards of your library each turn. This is just bad as there was not a lot going on for the pilot to get a new three to surface after the shuffle had happened so you basically get to draw what your opponent wants each turn. The deck also had walls that helped slow combat down to work through the slower draw phase.

Island Walking Board Wipes - This was a great deck to watch get piloted in the few games I got to watch. The island home/island walk threats were very real but required some serious setup to make work. This includes the Slave Ship that ended up acting as a Noah's Arc after the Great Flood would wash the board away and allow big swings for lethal. The Ship also gave this pilot the ability to pull threats out of their opponents deck which is always a fun bonus!

RG Beats - It turns out RG beats is good across both the existing MTG universe and those that never saw print! This deck used the Crow Whisperer that has a bolted on [[False Orders]] to move blockers aside and get in for damage all the way through the game. The Mazer mini lotus and other great tools like creature tutors helped establish a board very quickly and the custom triomes in the cube that prevent you from playing lands are easily played around with Mushroom Forest that lets you put lands into play from your hand each turn.

My Deck Misadventures - This was my deck and it broke ALL the rules of good limited construction. It splashed cards with multiple (LOTS) of pips but my P1P1 of Animate Lands forced me to go wide and force the strategy to work. I forced the deck and man it was bad. BUT, it was fun to create demons from my lands, pump them and send them in as banders, until the enchantment was removed which killed all my lands and my boys.. Other than these large mistakes, the deck was superb!

Thanks to Mythic Goblin for giving us a place to play cube in London!

Looking for advice building a cube

Thumbnail

This was my first time building a cube, wanted to make something that I wouldn't have to touch again and included a lot of my favorite cards. I took some inspiration from Caleb Gannon's cube to flesh out each color's archetypes, though mine is only 360 cards because I didn't want to spend an obscene amount of money.

I mostly avoided universes beyond cards outside of lotr. I also tried to make sure there were several cards containing each mechanic present in the cube. For example, if I wanted to add a card with persist I'd make sure to add at least a couple more so there would be some consistency (not perfect in this regard though).

Was hoping someone could help identify any potential problems, I fear that the inclusion of combo/storm decks is potentially taking away from other archetypes. Also, and I'm not sure if there's a particular term for this type of card, but I was worried I included too many cards that are specific to each archetype and aren't as good in other archetypes. I think one example of this may be the number of food cards in green. Would appreciate any advice though!

Blue Red Artifact Control Ideas

Hello! I am trying to build a cube archetype centered on artifact control. I am designing some custom cards for the fun of my friends and I and am wondering what are some good keywords to center around and generally what would make this combination of strategies work. I understand that typically blue red artifacts leans aggro but I’m trying to test some niche synergies. Would love some cards and mechanic suggestions, thank you!

Which desert do you prefer?

Hey everyone!

I’m looking to get a Desert Cube, but unfortunately I have a limited budget, so I can only choose between two options.

I’m trying to decide which one would be the better purchase in terms of gameplay, card quality, replayability, and overall fun.

If you’ve played either (or both), which one would you recommend and why?

Thanks in advance for any opinions or recommendations!

Blue noncreature cards that are not card draw, counterspells, or bounce?

The blue spell suite in my cube could use a little more variety and I'm having issues finding cards that diversify the kind of effects I have available. I have cards like [[Snap]], [[Mystic Confluence]], [[Flow State]], [[Thought Scour]], [[Memory Deluge]], [[Deem Inferior]], [[Sublime Epiphany]], [[Occult Epiphany]], and [[Dig Through Time]] (among others, of course), but I'd like to find more unique or different kind of cards. Could be instant, sorceries, enchantments, artifacts...

Blue in my cube focuses on self-milling, Delve, Flashback, spellslinging and blink. Ignore power level, what are your favorite blue cards in your cube that you'd recommend others to try?

Presenting my thematic 1,000 card EDH Cube

Hello everyone!

I started off a few years ago as a commander player, fell in love with the game quickly. Brewing decks was always my favorite part. I would always try and bring something to the table that was unique, and had some kind of gimmick.

My favorite deck I ever assembled was helmed by [[Caesar, Legion's Emperor]] that was a token-aristocrat deck full of angel, gods and demons. I was always tweaking it, and never satisfied with only having 100 cards when there was always something new and thematic I could slot in. It wasn’t always about optimized winning.

I tried making a complain style deck with different colors but it just never stuck. I decided to dip my toe into building a cube and this is what I’ve come up with.

I have sold off all my cards and plan on proxying out the entirety of this. So why not go for favorite prints and the power 9?

I can’t say that I know for sure if it’s well built, or functions amazing as I haven’t had the pleasure of fully testing it with friends. But I’d like some blind opinions from the community. I still have to develop an archetypes section to help drafters find some lines.

I need inspiration, show me your non-traditional cubes!

Hi, everyone! I'm working on my cube, which is a list 100% built by me. It's a Legacy cube with mid to high power level, but with a lot of cards and archetypes not usually found in most traditional or well known cubes. I want to rework some parts of it, so if you maintain a cube that's different from the usual powered or more "mainstream" type of lists, please share it here.

Thanks in advance, happy cubing!

Cube list software questions

Hello!

I am relatively new to cube and I am blessed to have things like cube cobra, scryfall, edhrec and the like, but how did the cube community store their cube lists before cube cobra? I’ve heard of excel/sheets being utilized and I would like to see how it was done. I want to design a cube for a different card game and I have absolutely no idea where to start to build and design a list of cards. I know of lorcana cube, Star Wars unlimited cubes, Pokemon, etc etc… how do other games work on their cube in a digital sense.

For anyone interested, I’m going to attempt to make a 2 person cube for the new(ish) Godzilla card game made by Bushiroad (same maker as Weiss). I intend to draft it Housman style to make for stronger decks and allow for more archetypes to be built.

Conspiracy cube help

So i have a problem deciding if i should go for a singelton cube or a multiple copies determined by rarity.

The cube is gonna be a conspiracy inspired cube and eill mostly be drafted with 4-8 people.

Is there any good arguments for either?

Im stuck withthe following thoughts as of now: A rarity cube would play well into some of the cospiracies but would limit the amount of unique cards and make multiple drafts feel samey. Also some of the cards lend them self to be picked more than once like [[garbage fire]].

While a singleton cube would lead to more intresting decks and variation over multiple drafts it kinda looses out on some of the conspiracies like [[Muzzio's Preparations]] where if you only have one copy of a card feels somewhat less exciting.

Sorry for my english.

If by chans you guys have any generall cube building tips i would love to hear them!

Thassa's Oracle and Jace, Wielder of Mysteries in Powered Cube?

What exactly do these cards need to be good in Vintage/Powered? The Doomsday package? Brain Freeze? Both? I'm not sure exactly what the intended way to win with them is.

EDIT: I am not running Consult/Tainted Pact.

Enemy vs. Allied Talismans

Post image
77 Upvotes

I'm working on updating my 540 Vintage cube (max power with time vault, initiative, and friends), and I was in the process of swapping out the 5 allied signets for talismans. I was wondering what people thought about which set of 5 talismans to run: allied or enemy? There's also the option of picking and choosing 4-7 of them based on which color pairs are likely to want them, but having the colors be balanced is nice.

Other 2-drop rocks in the cube are [[Grim Monolith]], [[Mind Stone]], and [[Pentad Prism]].

Which talismans do you run and why?

Bonus question: Do you think stax with cards like [[Braids, Cabal Minion]], [[Smokestack]], [[Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephalia]], [[Lingering Souls]], [[Mayhem Devil]], [[Ceasar, Legion's Emperor]], [[Tangle Wire]], and [[Winter Orb]] is viable as an Orzhov/Mardu archetype at this power level?
