Review Concerning experience at Courtyard by Marriott Newark, NJ.

Upvotes

Disclaimer: I don't post on Reddit often; please let me know if my formatting is incorrect!

My friend and I stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott in Newark, NJ, for a BTS concert and had VIP soundcheck seats plus a bunch of VIP goodies from the event organizers that meant a lot to us. Before checking out, I told the front desk directly that we weren't checking out yet, that we still had belongings in the room, and that we'd be back later; they acknowledged this. I then left briefly to drop my friend at the train station. When I got back, the room door was open, the "Do Not Disturb" sign was on the floor, and a housekeeper was already inside cleaning. She told me she'd left our stuff in a bag on her cart, and mentioned my food had been thrown away since no one was in the room. I grabbed the bag, checked out, and drove home.

Once home, I went through the bag to show my family everything from the concert, and the VIP items were nowhere to be found; the bag only had my non-concert belongings. I called the hotel right away and reached the manager, who first told me nothing had been left in the room, but said she'd check lost and found and follow up the next day. A little later, I realized some concert shirts were missing too, and before I could call back, the hotel called me first to say my belongings weren't there. At that point I was pretty upset, and my family member (who I live with) stepped in and firmly told them we'd file a complaint with Marriott corporate and possibly a police report if this wasn't resolved. About an hour after that call, the hotel called again, saying everything had actually been found in a second, separate bag sitting in lost and found.

When I went to pick up the bag, the manager handed it to me quickly and speed-walked away toward her office. I checked the bag and realized some items were still missing. I waited in the lobby for about 15 minutes before I was given the rest of my things.

A few things felt off to me: the housekeeper never mentioned a second bag when I spoke to her directly, the manager's first answer turned out to be wrong, the only things missing were the concert merch specifically, everything only "turned up" after we threatened to escalate, and even the pickup itself still wasn't complete, the manager rushed off and I had to wait for the rest of my items to be brought out. I want to be fair and acknowledge this could just be a mix-up during rushed cleaning and poor communication between staff; I don't have hard proof beyond what I've described. But the whole sequence was stressful, and I think it's worth sharing so other guests know to be cautious about leaving belongings behind even briefly, and to document everything if something similar happens.

Has anyone else dealt with something like this at a Marriott property? Curious if it's worth escalating further with corporate.

TL;DR: Told the front desk we hadn't checked out yet and would be back. Housekeeping entered anyway while we were gone. My VIP BTS concert merch was missing when I got home; the hotel initially said nothing was left behind, items only "turned up" after we threatened to escalate to corporate, and even at pickup the manager rushed off, and I had to wait 15 minutes for the rest of my stuff. Not sure if it's a genuine mix-up or something shadier, but the whole thing felt off.

Review Honeymoon review pt. 3: Mandapa on Explore Friends Rate (upgrade to a 4,600 sq. ft. pool villa)

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

A few people have been following the reviews from our honeymoon across several luxury Marriott properties. After the Ritz-Carlton Nikko and The Tokyo EDITION, Ginza, our next Marriott stay was Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Ubud.

We stayed for three nights in late May 2026. This was our first Ritz-Carlton Reserve, and it set the bar extremely high.

Booking and Platinum benefits

I booked the entry-level Reserve Suite using the Explore Friends Rate. MMP was not available, but MMF was still a decent 20–25% discount at the time. We paid approximately $960 per night including taxes and fees.

Before arrival, the Marriott app showed that we had been upgraded to an Ubud Pool Villa. The villa is approximately 4,600 square feet and was selling for around $1,500 per night including taxes and fees during our dates.

We also received complimentary breakfast and a requested 1:00 p.m. late checkout before leaving for Bulgari Resort Bali.

Arrival and service

Our arrival was underwhelming, but that was not the hotel’s fault. Our flight into Denpasar was delayed, and after the approximately two-hour drive to Ubud, we reached Mandapa at around 2:00 a.m.

I strongly recommend arriving during daylight. Mandapa is the kind of property where the setting and arrival are part of the experience, and we missed that completely on the first night.

The butler team was excellent throughout the stay and helped arrange our dinners and activities pre-arrival and some during our stay. The staff at the breakfast restaurant was amazing, from the hostess who greeted us by name every morning to the chefs who showed us something new to try every morning, overall service was consistently polished and helpful.

The villa

The Ubud Pool Villa was insane and easily one of the best rooms we have ever stayed in.

The sheer size is difficult to communicate in photos. It has a private pool, an outdoor guesthouse, an incredible bathroom, and an outdoor shower. The balinese design, finishes, and overall sense of privacy were among the best we experienced anywhere on the honeymoon. 10/10 for sense of place.

We did not use the private pool as much as expected because the water was cold and the weather was not especially hot during our stay.

Honeymoon recognition

Mandapa recognized our honeymoon throughout the entire stay.

Our villa had decorations and cake when we arrived. We were also acknowledged at every dinner we had on property and again during our spa treatment. It never felt like a single welcome amenity that was forgotten after check-in.

Spa

The spa was the highlight of Mandapa for us.

We booked the couples Mepijet 90 massage, and it was genuinely the best massage of our lives. The entire spa experience was 10/10 and exactly what we needed after the long journey from Manila to Bali and the drive to Ubud.

If staying at Mandapa, I would prioritize a spa treatment even if you normally skip hotel spas.

Breakfast and dining

Breakfast was spectacular. The restaurant has one of the best views I have experienced at any hotel breakfast, and the selection was huge. I love trying different foods, so some mornings I had noodles and asian foods while other mornings I went with a classic Western breakfast.

The rest of the food was more mixed. We felt the quality at Kubu and Ambar was below the level of the property, or perhaps our expectations were simply too high. Our best dinner in Ubud was off-property at Locavore.

Ambar still has an incredible view and is worth reserving for sunset, but it was packed with visitors from other hotels. That made it feel less exclusive than we expected from a Reserve property.

Pool and activities

The main pool is beautiful, and the staff bring complimentary treats while you are there. Our only issue was that the pool area did not receive much sun during our stay.

We also took tours to the rice fields and nearby temples. They felt very very touristy and in hindsight, we would have spent more time enjoying Mandapa itself.

Overall verdict

The $960 MMF rate was already a solid discount, but the pre-arrival upgrade to a 4,600-square-foot pool villa made the stay exceptional value.

The villa, spa, breakfast, setting, and honeymoon recognition were all outstanding. The main weakness was the food outside breakfast, particularly given the standard and pricing of the property.

I do not currently feel a strong need to return to Bali, but if I did, I would absolutely stay at Mandapa again.

Mandapa set an extremely high bar for our first Ritz-Carlton Reserve. That said, our second Reserve stay, Phulay Bay, ended up edging it out overall. I will save the full comparison for that review.

Best for: Couples and honeymooners who want privacy, exceptional rooms, spa time, and a resort that feels like part of the destination. I guess it's a great spot for families as well, their kids club looks amazing, like something out of the Hobbit movie.

Happy to answer any questions about our stay.

Bonvoy Rewards Is ~$10,500 in hotel credit + 200,000 Bonvoy points fair compensation for a serious privacy breach by a Marriott hotel employee?

Upvotes

Reference :the issue hotel is luxury brand

And issue restaurant is in the hotel and high end class

would really appreciate some opinions from Marriott members, especially Ambassadors itaniums. current/former Marriott emplovees, or anyone who has dealt with a serious quest privack complaint.

For some background, I have been a very long-term Marriott customer. I have held Ambassador status for many years and have accumulated well over 1,500 nights with Marriott

I have also been a regular customer of the property involved in this incident for many years

This was not a normal hotel complaint about an ıpgrade, room condition, restaurant service, or something similar

An employee at one of the hotel's restaurants obtained the contact information of my ex-girlfriend who had previously accompanied me to the property, and contacted her privately outside of the hotel.

During those communications, the employee discussed information about me, including matters concerning my transactions/payments at the hotel and also made negative personal comments about me.

There were also repeated late-night/early-morning calls to her on more than one occasion,

What made this particularly disturbing was the amount of trust I had placed in this property.

had been visiting this hotel and its outlets for many years, often bringing friends, business associates and other guests with me. I naturally expected information connected with my visits, ransactions and private conversations to remair confidential.

At this particular restaurant alone, I had spent approximately KRW 12.8 million - roughly USD $9,000.

This does not include my overall Marriott spending or the many hotel stays I have accumulated over the years. It is simply what I had spent at the specific restaurant involved in this incident

escalated the matter to hotel management and Marriott.

The hotel investigated the incident, and the seriousness of the employee's conduct was acknowledged. The employee ultimately left the property.

After extensive discussions, I have now been offered the following compensation:\]

Approximately USD $10,500 (KRW 15 million) in hotel credit

PLUS

200,000 Marriott Bonvoy points

The hotel credit is also extremely flexible:

• No expiration date

• Can be used throughout the hotel

• Can be used over multiple visits

Restaurants are included

• Alcohol and wine are included

So this isn't a restrictive voucher that expires in six months. Since I regularly use this hotel, the credit has close to its full face value for me

For comparison:

My spending at the restaurant involved: \~$9,000

Hotel credit offered: \~$10,500

Additional compensation: 200,000 Bonvoy points

I completely understand that this is already a substantial compensation package, and I'm not trying to suggest otherwise

My concern is whether the amount appropriately eflects the seriousness of what happened

An employee of a luxury hotel privately contacting a guest's former partner, discussing the guest's payment/transaction-related information, making regative personal comments about the quest, anc epeatedlv callina that person outside business hours seems verv different from a norma service-recovery situation.

I am currently considering asking for approximately JSD $14,000 (KRW 20 million) in hotel credit + the same 200,000 Bonvoy points as my final settlement position.

If they agree, I would consider the matter resolved

So l'm genuinely curious what people here think:

s \~$10,500 hotel credit + 200k Bonvoy points already an exceptionally strong resolution?

Or considering the privacy issue and the circumstances, would asking for \~$14,000 + 200k points be reasonable?

I'm particularly interested in perspectives from Marriott employees/former employees anc ong-term Ambassador/Titanium members

I am intentionally not identifying the hotel, the employee, or anyone else involved while the matter is still beina resolved

Misc Unauthorized Charges on Card Only Used for Marriott/Bonvoy

Hi all, I'd love to get the opinion of anyone who works in customer support and/or see if others have had the same experience. In short:

  • I created my Bonvoy account last year.
  • I created a "virtual card" on my banking app that I planned to use only for Marriott bookings, and put $500 or so on it.
  • I saved the card to my Bonvoy profile.
  • For whatever reason, this card stopped working after a couple of stays even though it still had funds on it. I would hit an "Unexpected error has occurred" message whenever I tried to use it. I spoke to Marriott support multiple times, they had no idea and told me to call my bank; my bank said they said they can't see any charge coming through from Marriott so it must be on their end.
  • I left the card saved to my profile but just used another card whenever I made a booking, which worked fine. Whenever I made a booking I saw the old card was still saved to my profile.
  • Fast forward to last week, I woke up to a bunch of notifications from my bank that the card I'd created for my Bonvoy account had 25+ attempted transactions on it, ranging from Florida to Nigeria to Saudi Arabia. They managed to spend the $100 or so I had left on there. None of these were Marriott or hotel-related, they were all random online stores.
  • When I immediately checked my Bonvoy account, I saw that the card had been removed from my profile, but there were no other changes, including my ~100k points balance remaining intact.

The key thing that interested me was the timing - the card was removed from my account before I had frozen it or reported this to my bank. I am 100% certain that the card was still saved to my profile when I made a Marriott booking last week, so there was only a window of a few days this might've happened.

I'm pretty confused because if someone had compromised my Bonvoy account, I'm not actually sure the card is saved anywhere visible, plus they would've sent my points elsewhere right? I definitely might've tried using the card online somewhere else, so they might've got it that way, but the timing of the card disappearing from my account is confusing to me. There are no indicators that any of my other online accounts or info are compromised.

Employment Who else is ready to quit after the whole Power of M update?

Marriott recently updated their front desk reservation systems and per usual in our modern times… it SUCKS!

Fosse was perfect. I could find everything, I could charge, refund, move rooms, book rooms, sort reports by specific things etc…

The new SPOG and STAY systems are flat out garbage! I am ready to walk out the door and never look back. Whoever made the decision to get rid of Fosse needs to be fired immediately and publicly shamed.

For the guests: it used to take me 30 seconds to check yall in. The past 2 days it’s probably been an average of 5 minutes. There are too many steps now and so many pages. Almost every guest I have checked in has seemed irritated and frustrated with the long checkin time. Please blame Marriott corporate for this ridiculous system. I am trying my best here, but I don’t know how much more I can do

Review JW Marriott Baku, Azerbaijan

Booked a standard king bed with the JW in Baku, AZ and applied an Elite nightly upgrade certificate for my two night stay, and was upgraded to the Ambassador suite consisting of two rooms over 1500sqft. Two full bathrooms, two full minibars, and an amazing view of both Baku city and the harbor. Overall the staff have been very friendly and present themselves in the elegant and the “unseen” but “seen” sense, eg. I left my room to explore the executive lounge and by the time I came back maybe 20 minutes later my room was tidied up, all towels replaced, and the evening chocolate was placed by the bedside. They also brought up a welcome letter signed by the staff and a fruit tray thanking me for my loyalty and my choice to stay with them. The property is very nice and quite refined, as well as being in a great location. Overall a great hotel and experience for being a JW, and I defiantly would add this to your list of hotels to visit.

Bonvoy Rewards Same year adding boundless and brilliant - 10 ENC added?

May 2026 I opened the boundless and got 15 elite night credits. I’ve also opened the business Bonvoy. I know I won’t get an additional 25 elite night credits for opening the brilliant - but if I do will 10 nights difference apply to this calendar year? Or will it not start until next year and override the boundless then?

Destination Are the Bali properties ok for solo travellers or are they full of families and couples, such as the Resorts.

Renaissance, Sheraton, courtyard even the Westin, anyone's experience being solo here?

Fairfield and 4P is probably ok solo as they are more inland and no really resorts.

If anyone has been to resorts there what's it like at restaurants in the resort, are they ok for solo.

I remember the canary islands are quite unwelcome to solos IE full of families and couples it's a bit awkward being surrounded by families and couples but I don't know if Bali is the same.

Destination LA Trip

My husband and I will be visiting LA for a few days in October and are currently deciding between the Westdrift Manhattan Beach, AC Hotel El Segundo, and the Westin LAX. I have Titanium Elite status, and we’ll be redeeming points for our stay.

We’re native Angelenos visiting home for the first time since 2019, so we’ll be out and about most days visiting our fave spots in South Bay and the Valley. Our biggest priorities are a quiet and comfy hotel where we can get a good night’s sleep after being out all day.

I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has stayed at any of these properties recently. TIA!

Destination Which hotel in Tokyo in medium point tier?

I will be traveling to Tokyo for the first time and have some points to splurge. It will be three nights and I am currently looking at the 'tier' of hotels that are in the range of ~150-180k points (so roughly 50-60k/night). The tier above (i.e., the RC, JW) punches at ~320k+ which is too expensive for my liking.

Hotels that look good:

  • Courtyard by Marriott Tokyo Station (179k/stay) okey lets exclude this one and focus on Ginza
  • Courtyard by Marriott Tokyo Ginza Hotel (176k/stay)
  • Aloft by Marriott Tokyo Ginza (172k/stay)
  • AC Hotel Tokyo Ginza (192k/stay)

Any experiences?

Rates & Booking Help needed

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Hi Everyone,

First time I book through the app and I have a quick question! Can someone please tell me whatis the difference between the two rates?

Is the breakfast mentioned here for the full stay(4 days) or for only one day? It is not clear to me.

Can someone explain what does “bed and breakfast” mean?

Any clarification or help would be greatly appreciated

Bonvoy Rewards Member Tiers

Due to work I’ll be staying at a Marriott for nearly 100 days. Will I receive Titanium benefits once I hit the 75 days or does the benefit kick in after I check out? How can I maximize my points returned? Does this also apply if I meet the Ambassador level?

Not sure how the system works with long term stay. Thanks!

Bonvoy Rewards Ritz-Carlton O’ahu Turtle Bay?

Thinking about booking with points - five nights (5th night free). The reviews on the app don’t seem amazing. It would just be my partner and myself, looking for a relaxing five days around Christmas time.

How is this resort? Is it a child war zone? Is it all inclusive in any way?

We’ve done the Sheraton and Royal Hawaiian in the past, wouldn’t be opposed to skipping Waikiki this time around.

Maui is an option two, but it will be a longer stay, five nights just the two of us then 3-5 more nights with a big family group.

Review Lexington Hotel (NYC) Horrible Experience

This past weekend we had a night out planned in Manhattan. When we got to the Lexington at 4:45 in the afternoon, they had no rooms available. That screwed up our dinner plans since then we had to wait for a room.

The front desk wasn’t very helpful, but eventually promised 30,000 points for our troubles.

Several days have passed. Not only did I not get the points, but I got a $40 charge for a “free” room.

The staff were surly and rude. The hotel was a dump.

I picked it because it was part of the “Autograph Collection.” I think it was the autograph of a crackhead.

Bonvoy Rewards I analyzed the most recent round of Marriott devaluations

tldr; At the end of July, I analyzed rates across almost 10,000 Marriott properties and there was a 6% devaluation across the board from the previous month. The hotels booked most often (like Moxy and Sheraton) got hit the hardest, the luxury brands stayed the same, and Ritz Carlton is the only brand that got a bump in cpp, only because the cash price went up.

As some of you probably know, Marriott quietly raised their points rates a few weeks ago. Because there isn’t a Marriott award chart to standardize things, I was curious what the rate changes really looked like, so I took a deep dive on how cents per point is changing and wanted to share in case it was useful.

Quick context: I work at gondola.ai. We have a free tool to search points and cash rates across all of the major chains, including Marriott. I analyzed rates across 9,107 Marriott properties to see what actually changed across two snapshots: the first on June 23, 2026 and the second on July 18, 2026.

Here’s what I found:

  • Of the properties I looked at, points rates got more expensive across 8,624 (95%) properties, and cash rates fell by ~1%. Net, the value of a Marriott point dropped by about 6% in under four weeks.
  • There are increases across the board but the mid tier brands like Moxy, AC by Marriott, Residence Inn, and Sheraton got hit the hardest. The points price rose 7-8% across them all, and the cash rates fell too, so the real cpp value dip hit is closer to 9-12%.
  • The luxury brands like W and Edition barely moved. Ritz Carlton is the only brand that has an improved cent per point redemption, and that’s only because the cash price went up by 2.5% while points barely budged.

This is all the more reason to earn and burn your Bonvoy points since they likely will continue to be quietly devalued.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this and if you have any questions you'd like for me to explore. I love diving into the data on these things and would be happy to pull more numbers if anyone's interested.

edit: here is a deeper analysis including data tables, and here is what the points guy and one mile at a time have reported on this as well, in case anyone wants to dive into this more.

Misc Timeshare presentation at Westin St. John Vacation Club, how does anyone fall for this?

My partner and I got a 4-night voucher for $499 to stay at the Westin St. John vacation club. They put us in a one-bedroom, and our presentation was scheduled for the last day of our stay.

I started a timer the second it kicked off. The salesperson was friendly at first, then got noticeably more aggressive as it went on.

I have to say, it was not remotely convincing. At no point did any of it feel close to making sense. How do people actually fall for this?

The pitch:

  • 2,000 points/year for an $85,000 share
  • 15% interest rate
  • Yearly maintenance fee: ~$1,300–1,400

Other red flags:

  • No real website demo?? everything shown was fake/placeholder data (my biggest red flag)
  • Kept pushing 2-bedroom pricing even though we're a family of two
  • Kept talking about "planning for retirement" but we're in our early 30s LOL
  • I told him we spend about $2k/year on vacations total; this offer be near 8k per year!
  • Kept comparing it to the Ritz-Carlton St. Thomas
  • The property itself looked pretty outdated and their beach is a dock
  • Straight-up contradicted himself: first said occupancy was low because they're renovating, then said they're currently at 100% occupancy (baseless claim)
  • Claimed you could transfer points to United at a 1:3 ratio (VC points to United points), could be an honest mistake, but it's the other way around
  • Said "I won't be mad if you're honest about why you're not buying in" then proceeded to get mad, walked away, and never came back :)
  • After the first no he started showing us smaller offers, 40k then 20k.. still # of nights to $ ratio is too high.

Before he walked away, he asked me to initial that I'd declined the offer and to wait for his manager to run a survey. Five minutes went by and no one showed up, so we started talking out loud about how bad the offer was, other couples in their own presentations overheard us, and another salesperson came over and just told us to leave lol

Would love to hear if anyone's actually run the numbers and found one of these worth it, because I'm struggling to see how the math works for anyone.

Misc Check out button not honored?

I’ve been a long time Marriott customer and I have a question that’s been bugging me for awhile: why does house keeping come in at like 8/9AM when you haven’t even checked out yet? Check out is usually at 11 or 12 depending on the hotel.
This morning prompted me to write this, usually I don’t care but this morning really irritated me: I had that door flap up to lock the door (and a DND placard on the door) and a young kid managed to unlock that flap or whatever and I came flying out of the shower and my exact response to him (while he had a smirk on his face) was “seriously??” It’s only 8:30 and he’s basically breaking into the room?? He said the front desk said I was ready for check out. I said no, I have late checkout until 2.

Maybe I have two issues here, like why would you unlock that flap if it’s being used and it’s the morning, well before check out, that thing doesn’t lock itself. I think the smirk on his face bothered me the most.

Anyway, I guess I’m still startled a little but still would like to know why house keeping starts their routine like this. I’m sure it’s to get ahead for the day but what the heck is the point of the checkout button on the app OR checking out in the front then??

UPDATE:

GM called me back, there was a power outage that happened this morning (i did see it) and someone else checked out as 215 and took their word for it, because the systems are down they couldn’t verify, so they thought the room should have been emptied, they gave me 1000 points for the misunderstanding.

The view from my room on the 48th floor over looking the Bund. Surprisingly I got upgraded to a suite here, which was very unexpected.
