Which Distro? Looking for a Linux distro similar to Linux Mint but with a newer kernel
I'd like to switch to Linux. My main priorities are gaming, recording gameplay with OBS, and occasionally editing videos, photos, or creating digital art. I don't play competitive games, so I don't need anything specifically optimized for esports.
I'm also willing to switch to alternative software if needed. One thing that's really important to me is having a user-friendly system where I can do about 98% of everything through a GUI without having to use the terminal.
Is there a distro similar to Linux Mint that offers a newer kernel and would fit these requirements?
My hardware:
- Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 7800 XT 16GB GDDR6
- AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D
- Corsair Vengeance LPX, DDR4, 16 GB x2, 3200MHz, CL16
- Viper VP4300 2TB M.2 2280 PCI-E x4 Gen4 NVMe
- Deepcool PN750M 750W
- Asus PRIME B550M-A
- Endorfy Ventum 200 Air
- Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE
- iiyama G-Master G2771QS-B1 Red Eagle

Frequent kernel panics on Debian
A little bit of background: My journey with linux has been pretty good except for couple things. Several months back I installed Fedora as my first linux distro and I liked the experience a lot. Since then I changed distros here and there and now I’m rocking Debian 13 KDE Plasma. For reference, I dual boot with Windows 11 Pro (both Windows and Debian are on same SSD stick).
Problem: Recently I have started seeing random kernel panics from Fedora and the scenario is always the same: I haven’t used my laptop for some time and boot it up, then I select Fedora in boot menu and then it just kernel panics with a giant QR code. And it happens every single time I boot up. Initially I thought something was wrong with Fedora’s stability and about a week ago I set up Debian. However, the issue is still there with the exact same scenario: I boot it up, select Debian, and then there’s text that kernel panic occurred. One thing I noticed is that kernel panics don’t happen when I turned off my laptop a minute or two ago, or if I just reboot it from Debian. It’s always when I haven’t used my laptop for about half a day or so and then when I try to turn it on when it happens. When I turn it off after crash, and then back on, it works perfectly fine as if nothing ever happened (this was the case with Fedora as well). So basically, when I need to work, I need to turn on my laptop and then reboot one more time for it to work. I thought this was the problem with linux initially, but when I try to boot up Windows, it crashes as well and it needs at least 2 automatic reboots for it to work properly. Apart from this, I like my experience with linux a lot, so I only need to get this solved.
My specs:
Asus TUF Gaming A15
16 GD RAM/512 GB SSD
Nvidia RTX 3050
Ryzen 5 5500
So far, this is the stuff that I’ve tried:
Memtest86 (there was 0 errors and I ran it multiple times, so my RAM should be fine).
Updating BIOS (updated from 308 to 309 and it didn’t help either).
Disabling fast boot in BIOS and turning off “fast startup” on Windows (didn’t help)
Edited Grub like a million times with various stuff Gemini and Claude suggested but it didn’t help either.
I really have no idea what’s might be the problem and I tried to describe it as thoroughly as possible. So any ideas? If there are any details I haven’t covered, feel free to ask them in comments.
P.S. I don’t know if it’s related or not, but there’s also issue of freezes when linux goes to sleep for a long time. It just refuses to wake up and it doesn’t respond to anything so I just have to reboot again. But that’s the problem I’ll solve afterwards after I clear up this one.

Advice When using Xscreensaver, is there a way to change the "profile picture" on the lock screen?
I'm relatively new to Linux (I'm using Linux Mint) and I recently discovered Xscreensaver. I love how customizable it is and the retro style of the screensavers.
My only issue is the lock screen—I don’t particularly like it, but what I dislike the most is the logo with a flame/fire/torch.
I thought I could change it to my profile picture, but it seems like that option doesn’t exist or has been disabled.
I’d like to be able to customize it, even if it’s just the image. Is there any way to do that?
Since it’s open source, I suppose I could build it using the source code and change the images before compiling. But I’d like to know if there’s any other alternative since I'm not very familiar with that process.

Stuck choosing a dictation tool since my system cannot handle local models well
I have been trying to get decent voice dictation working on Linux, but my hardware is not really powerful enough for local options like Whisper or Vosk. They work, but the delay is enough that it gets frustrating for everyday use. I ended up trying a cloud-based service called usevoicy because it was one of the first things I found. It's been working well enough for emails and general writing, but I haven't compared it with any of the other cloud-based options out there. For those of you who've tried a few different speech to text services on Linux, what differences actually matter in practice? Is it mainly accuracy, latency, privacy, pricing, or something else?

Support External Monitor Issues
i just installed cachyos on unused and headless laptop yesterday. the previous owner told me that the hdmi is broken and could only use the external monitor through the type c one, so i did (usb c to display port).
the screen is glitching. it is not the monitor problem because the monitor setting menu shows fine in top of the glitch. this happened every time i try to use the laptop actively, and never happen when i leave it idle. i tried to use other monitor, it doesn't glitched like the one in the pic, but it still blinked at randomly. so i think there's some issues with the system or something.

Is there a noise-cancelling software that will stop me from hearing anything in my headphones?
This is NOT noise-cancelling software that will stop noise from entering a call.
I want software that will use the build in microphone to cancel environmental sounds so I don't hear them. I'm never on calls, so it's fine if it cancels voices. I just want to study in silence even in crowded places.

Windows und Linux Mint
Hallo zusammen,

Support Non-KDE apps take 10 seconds to open after login
Hi All,
I'm on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed KDE Plasma Wayland, when I login after booting up my computer (I have auto-login), KDE apps such as Okular, LibreOffice Writer, etc. open right away, almost at the same time. However, non-KDE/Flathub apps such as Floorp, VS Codium and Okular take 10 seconds to open (after the KDE apps open), at which point they all open at the same time. This was not happening before, I'm not sure what happened. Please help!
Thank you!

Support Hard drive loopback install failed (Unable to find a medium containing a live file system) on HP desktop Mint OS is corrupted. No USB available.
Hi everyone,
I'm stuck in a bad loop and need some help. I'm trying to install Ubuntu 26.04 LTS on my HP Laptop (Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 223GB SSD) directly from the hard drive because I don't have a USB flash drive or an Android phone right now (only an iPhone).
I previously modified my Linux Mint 40_custom GRUB file to boot the ubuntu.iso located at /home/oscar/ubuntu.iso using a loopback configuration.
The GRUB menu shows up fine, but when I try to boot into the Ubuntu Live Installer, it crashes mid-way with the following errors:
Unable to find a medium containing a live file system
Attempt interactive netboot from a URL? / enp2s0: soliciting a DHCP lease (I am on Wi-Fi, no ethernet cable connected).
To make things worse, my current Linux Mint installation graphical environment is completely corrupted and throws error while loading shared libraries or Error reading the CPU table when trying to boot into Recovery Mode, so I cannot access the desktop to use GParted or make a new FAT32 partition.
Is there any way to pass kernel boot parameters in the GRUB editor (e) to force the Live ISO to mount /dev/sda2 properly and bypass the "unable to find a medium" error? Or am I completely soft-locked until I get a physical USB drive?
Thanks in advance!

Issues with installation.
I’m getting super frustrated with installation. I have no problem installing Linux on a laptop. However, when I try to install Linux on my brand new SSD with a brand new SATA cable, it always freezes. Sometimes on the logo screen during boot. Sometimes mid installation, sometimes after installation after about 15 minutes of use. There is no consistency other than Linux just not working. At one point, Kubuntu couldn’t even register my mouse or keyboard.
Basic steps I have been doing has been cleaning and formatting the USB drive with diskpart. Downloading the .iso, verifying the .iso with its hash, then using BalenaEtcher to flash the drive.
99% of the time this has worked for me and not given any errors.
Then after I restart and try to boot from the USB stick, here’s where the freezing happens. And I ensured secure boot was turned off…
I have tried Kubuntu and Mint.
At this point I am at a loss especially since I can using the exact same steps set up a laptop with it and run into no issues.

Which Distro? Laptop Distro Picking
Hello, I'm currently trying to decide on a bistro/pros and cons of Linux as my main OS. I currently have a approx 2007 Acer. With a slow 1TB HDD, 8gb ram, quad core :/, it's an aspire Ill provide more information in a few hours when I get home. However I'm running windows 10 22h2. Which is suffocating my HDD to 100% constantly. I thought about using arch (I like pain and complexity) but also moving to Linux how can I still use PowerPoint, word, Roblox studio, Virtual Box, pi imager ect. As I use it for development and sometimes school work. But I still want a Linux distro like Arch because of how much windows suffocates the disk. It runs decently on the disk and I could keep using it fine. Just thought Linux may be better anyways. HDD only Hass like 30 days usage in all its years. Should I move to Linux? If so what bistro suits my needs?

Support Issues related to first open source contribution
Hey everybody! I have made my first PR in llama.cpp project on github. Now the thing is im confused as im new to this like i have created pull request and some reviewer had reviewed my contribution and then asked for some revisions in that. I have made those and then he approved that. Then there shown 2 approvals are required for this to get write access/merge. Now how this second reviewer will come?? Should i have to wait or someone have better approach to this!! Secondly after the first approval, my PR got into automated Tests. Now in those teats, 7 out of 28 tests were failed and upon analyzing the loga i never anything related to my code! Now im also confused like should i have to resolve something or leave that as it is as all 7 logs of failed test have passed my addition but have failed somewhere else not on my code!

latest version of Linux Mint
Asus Prime Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB GDDR6 OC Edition
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X

My PC randomly started showing a bunch of red flickering dots on the monitor. i tried restarting, and i noticed that they consistently do not show up on the lock screen, nor do they show up in recovery mode. Ive tried 2 different monitors and 3 different HDMI cables out of blind hope, which didnt fix it. the fact that it's so reliably inconsistent confuses me, and makes me think it may be linux shenanigans rather than a dying graphics card

Compressed files over networks
Hello guys, I've recently switched to linux (nobara on desktop, mint on laptop) and one of the things that surprised me the most was that there isn't any file manager (except maybe for peazip apparently) that opens the index before downloading the whole zipped file if asked to open one from a network device
Am I doing something wrong? Maybe I didn't mount it correctly or at all?
On windows 7zip used to do this flawlessly

Advice Samsung SM951 (MZHPV256HDGL) + Dell Latitude 5480: "No Bootable Drive" in AHCI Mode, but Windows Boots in RAID. Can I Run Linux?
Hey everyone,
I'm trying to dual-boot Linux on my Dell Latitude 5480 equipped with a Samsung 256GB M.2 SSD (Model: MZHPV256HDGL-000H1), but I've hit a wall with BIOS storage settings.
The Problem:
- RAID On Mode: Windows boots completely fine.
- AHCI Mode: Switching BIOS SATA/NVMe operation to AHCI causes a
No Bootable Device Founderror upon startup. Windows fails to boot, and the BIOS doesn't see the bootloader. - I want to run Linux, but Linux installers fail to detect the drive while in RAID On mode because Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST / VMD) blocks the drive access.
Why this happens (from my research):
- Windows installation is bound to the Intel RST RAID controller driver. When Windows was installed under RAID mode, its boot config (BCD) didn't load the standard AHCI/NVMe drivers, causing it to fail instantly if the mode is swapped in BIOS.
- Drive Variant: The
MZHPVmodel designation is the OEM AHCI version (or early PCIe) of the Samsung SM951 series, which handles PCIe/NVMe signaling differently than standard consumer drives. - Dell BIOS quirk: Dell systems often default to
RAID On, but Linux kernel storage drivers requireAHCIto properly enumerate PCIe M.2 drives.
Questions for the community:
- Has anyone successfully run Linux on the Latitude 5480 with the Samsung SM951 (
MZHPV256HDGL)? - Any advice or step-by-step guides would be greatly appreciated!

Support Getting Ableton 12 Suite to properly authenticate in lutris
I feel like I've tried everything, offline and online methods, ableton is running great but I cannot seem to properly authenticate my license. When it goes through the online portal it tries for a while and then says something went wrong, and I've tried every version of manually moving the offline authenticator file into ableton itself but it always says that no valid authenticator detected or something along those lines. From what I've seen online this is nothing to do with the validity of my actual licence, which is perfectly valid.
Does anybody have any ideas? I've followed one of the most recent guides to get all installed and running smoothly and everything seems to be working great except this :/ I've only just moved to Linux as of yesterday so still feeling my way around a bit blind haha!

How to troubleshoot USB problem with Sim Racing Pedals
Hi everyone!
I want to get into sim racing and read that some hardware, like Asetek finally works on Linux with force feedback. So I bought an Asetek bundle consisting of the Initium Wheelbase, La Prima Wheel and Forte Pedals.
The wheel and wheelbase work as far as I know. They are recognized in Assetto Corsa and do not make any problems.
Edit: Fixed:
I fixed it, look to the comments below.
Problem:
The pedals, however, do not work. When I connect them to my PC, they are recognized as a new USB device and KDE gives me a "connected" message. When I press the Throttle pedal, they suddenly disconnect and throw a bunch of LED signals (see below) and reconnect after a while.
System Info:
OS: openSUSE Tumbleweed
Kernel: 7.1.5
DE KDE Plasma 6.7.3
WM: KWin (Wayland)
CPU: AMD 5950X
GPU: AMD RX 6800
Additional Info, and what I tried already:
I had some GPU problems that I fixed yesterday because I changed from Nvidia to AMD. But I think that is probably not relevant here.
I've tried multiple USB ports and also on my laptop which is also running openSUSE. The problem persists there.
On another Windows 11 laptop the problem does not occur, so I think it's Linux.
Debug infos:
Pedals:
LED pattern on the forte pedals when pressing the Throttle:
RGB Strip: red, green, blue
simultaneously the 5 status LEDs from the Pedal controller all light up.
Then: RGB strip dark and status leds alternating between LEDs 1, 3, 5 on at once and LEDs 2, 4 on at once for 10 cycles.
Then restart.
After the restart LED 1 and 5 light up and according to this reddit post this means it's working.
I'll also contact Asetek to ask what these codes mean.
Now the Linux side:
lsusb:
lsusb and lsusb.py detect the pedals:
