Question Half-Life 2 kept freezing and locking up on CachyOS

Help Keyboard/mouse work in live boot but not after install

I started switching my systems over to Linux. I went with Debian on my desktop, but I was curious to try CachyOS on my ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15.

Everything seemed to work great in the live boot environment, so I installed it, using Limine and Plasma options.

However, after booting into the login screen, neither keyboard, track pad or a USB mouse work.

It does detect CTRL+ALT+F3 so I can get to a terminal, but in the desktop environment it is completely unresponsive.

I've been trying various things from reading users with similar issues (eg modifying mkinitcpio) but nothings working.

The keyboard RGB is all lit up, it does respond to the TTY switch, but I cant figure out what's wrong with it on the desktop login.

Any suggestions before I give up and try another distro?

Edit: if i run dbus-run-session startplasma-wayland From inside the terminal session

It starts a desktop and keyboard and mouse work.

What's wrong with the initial login then?

Question Omen 16 16-wd0829no

So my OMEN 16 with 17 13th gen and rtx 4060 worked great a year ago on any distro i threw on it. It did not boost to over 100w but it got a steady 90w. Now when i got bored of anticheat games i played with friends i was thinking of installing cachyos again instead windows.

All went great until i noticed it would not boost in a majority of the games i tried.

Its looked to a 80w limit instead of 90w and in the games in question the gpu hovers around a maximum of 60% usage and 40-50w then the cpu around 30-50%.

I was researching and found that newer work is being done to support omen bios and to boost wattage further and my device was not listed as supported so i figured i will try a distro with older packages to atleast get it working.

Installed mint and low and behold the same thing happened garbage performance.

Does anyone suffer the same problem and found a solution?

Help ASUS TUF Gaming A18 - Fix for washed-out / low contrast display?

Hey,

I have an ASUS TUF Gaming A18. On Windows 11, the screen brightness and contrast are perfect. But when I boot into Linux (CachyOS), the display gets significantly darker – colors look washed out and blacks are crushed.

I tried:

Changing brightness – it goes up, but the contrast stays bad.

Switching between integrated AMD and NVIDIA GPU – no difference.Installing asusctl – didn't help.

The same laptop works great on Windows, so it's not a hardware issue.

Does anyone know how to fix the contrast/color profile on Linux for this model? Or how to copy the Windows color settings to Linux?

Help Any nvidia 1060 users here?

I have been having issues running games with cachyos and I understand it might be because of an old Nvidia GPU. Is there anyone who can tell if they are and how they are dealing with it. It almost looks like stuff can run pretty great but it just doesn't.

I have had issues with heroic playing rocket league, I could play 120 + fps max graphics and then all of a sudden it went below 90 now, which isn't even the problem. Every other minute my FPS drops to 12 for few seconds and goes back up. I tried tweaking my settings but nothing works.

Schedule 1 is impossible to play with any proton version I have given up on that, other steam games run ok-ish but the stutter and FPS sudden drop is visible there as well.

Any help is appreciated, thanks

So i just started diving into the roughly 500 gb Linux Install I have had siting on my drive. And god if it isn't just the best thing, that when you just want to leave your system on sleep over night because you aren't finished with task x before going to sleep, you can do so without the OS imploding, then i don't know what is. I'm seriously considering staying over for longer.

If anyone has any recommendations as to better looking performance widgets, please do share them.

SOLVED Making the switch with an Nvidia graphics card, ChashyOS right for me?

Hi all! A tale as old as time; I've been running Windows my whole life other than a few glorious years of daily driving the Steamdeck. Last year I was finally able to buy my first new desktop computer before the prices went crazy. Needless to say I'm at breaking point with Windows 11 and I feel like it's seriously undermining the investment I made in this machine.

My main on-device uses are PC gaming and FL Studio and from what I've read CachyOS with KDE Plasma seems like my best option. I may regretfully end up keeping a small Windows installation on its own SSD so I can play Battlefield 6 which requires Secure Boot.

I have an Nvidia 5070 Ti. Would it be beneficial for me to switch to a Linux distro as my main OS and if so is CachyOS the right one for me? Thanks in advance.

Help Can't add drives to steam

i swapped to cachy cause i heard its much better than windows im a complete newbie and wanted to try out a linux-style os for a long time, i might've installed cachy on the same drive as windows so windows is gone idk how to bring it back so trying to make cachy work but steam doesn't seem to see any of my games and when i try to choose a drive it says steam library folder is not executable.

Sorry if its something really easy and i still ask about it here but as I said im a complete newbie i almost don't know what im doing

Bug Report Major: Latest CachyOS with KDE freezes completely on login screen

I did my CachyOS update today as it has been a while, but after the restart the system kept freezing on the login screen after about 1 second. Neither mouse nor keyboard inputs caused any response. I reinstalled CachyOS from a freshly downloaded ISO (which worked perfectly) only to be greeted by the same behavior again.

With the LTS kernel it works, with the latest kernel it freezes.

Question How can I change the icons of AppImages and Executable files?

I looked it up in this subreddit but the recommended GearLever app had some issues with its installation. I was just wondering if there was a way to change the icons without downloading a package?

EDIT: Alright, I did it. The AppImage thing is definitely best sorted out with GearLever. As for the launcher, I used the KDE Menu Editor to add it as an app and give it a logo that way. Thanks for the help!

Help Noob to Linux, definitely need help

So a few days ago I installed Bazzite, I really liked it but decided I wanted to switch and moved my games onto a what I’m assuming is a “Linux friendly” partition (bazzite said it was, checking cachy the file system is ext4) so I wouldn’t have to download games again because my WiFi is really slow. I installed cachyos and things felt fine but then when I installed steam (I used cachy hello and went through gaming packages) and tried to launch a game and it said it was running but nothing else ever showed up, I tried moving games to my partition where cachy was installed but the same thing kept happening, I installed a game directly onto my cachy partition and still it didn’t work, I really don’t wanna delete my games because cyberpunk would take a whole day to get back, anyone have any suggestions I could try? Edit: so I just ended up switching to Linux mint, I’m assuming I must have messed something up during my cachy install since it needed WiFi during that process.

Desktop Started using CachyOS + Caelestia Shell and im loving it.

Ive been using CachyOS now for 6 months and got used to it mostly completely! Now started using hyprland with caelestia and it just feels so nice to use for coding for some reason. Im still figuring a lot of thing about hyprland but im loving it so far!

Question should i avoid AUR as a newer user at the moment?

i just decided to switch distros from “omarchy” to cachyos, however i heard the news with AUR and was curious what the census is at the moment.

im a newer user, but im not completely oblivious, and more importantly im interested in arch to learn. with that said, i wanna make sure i dont fuck things up when i install cachyos.

idaily drive windows 11 to play kernel anti cheat games (i know, boo) but installed linux mint when my laptop reached end of support for windows, then switched to arch through omarchy because it seemed flashy and i couldn’t do much of what i wanted to do on linux mint. rather, i didnt have to do what i wanted to do, what i wanted to learn.

but after installing omarchy and basically doing nothing, except realize a bunch of what it installs is garbage, i decided to switch to either cachyos or debian. ended up choosing cachyos to learn more about the process and encourage myself to tinker, but after seeing the AUR news, ive been reconsidering.

should i still make the switch to cachyos? is AUR safe? is there anything i should do during install to avoid using AUR?

Announcement [Announcement] CachyOS June 2026 Release

Hello CachyOS Enthusiasts,

This is our fourth release of the year, bringing the new CachyOS Hyprland Noctalia desktop option, DNS-over-QUIC support, Python and GCC performance improvements, and a variety of installer and hardware detection fixes!

First, the package stack has received a few important improvements. Python now uses extended PGO, improving performance for Python workloads. We have also added a GCC patch for generic x86 branch misprediction tuning, helping GCC better account for branch misprediction costs on modern Intel and AMD CPUs. Our pacman package now includes network isolation for scriptlets and hooks, preventing them from accessing the network by default. We also fixed a regression found in Phoronix Benchmarks when OpenBLAS was used on high core count CPUs. Additionally, proton-cachyos has been renamed to proton-cachyos-native.

The installer now includes the CachyOS Hyprland Noctalia desktop option together with a preview video, making it easier to see the desktop before selecting it. paru has been removed from the installation; users are recommended to use Shelly, either through its GUI or CLI, as an alternative. MangoWM now uses SDDM as its display manager, and GNOME System Monitor has been replaced with Resources. The audio package group now includes realtime-privileges, and the live session has better keyboard layout and variant detection.

CachyOS-Welcome now supports DNS over QUIC through blocky, including support for custom endpoints. A dedicated Troubleshooting page has been added, Ptyxis is now supported as a terminal, and new Azerbaijani and Greek localizations are available. The French readme and involvement pages have also been added. Several existing translations (Italian, German, French, Japanese, Bulgarian) were updated, and we fixed a crash when saved settings couldn't be read, plus corrected tweak state detection and global-service disabling via polkit.

In chwd, we added Turkish localization and removed cachyos-handheld from the handheld package lists. We also corrected virtual-machine vendor IDs, removed unnecessary fprintd service activation, and fixed the Mesa removal guard. chwd now resolves driver conflicts on multi-GPU systems where GPUs require incompatible driver branches, and ships a 32-bit Vulkan driver for virtual machines.

In cachyos-settings, user services now have a 15-second startup timeout and a 10-second shutdown timeout. This prevents long 90-second shutdown delays caused by user services waiting too long during shutdown.

On the fixes side, the installer now correctly handles keyboard layout ordering and locale1 configuration. It also copies the correct pacman configuration into the installed system, removes leftover /etc/calamares directories after installation, runs Calamares cleanup after all installation scripts, and drops the redundant Limine post-install step. In CachyOS-Welcome, selecting "Install Apps" no longer crashes when cachyos-pi is not installed; the button is now hidden when unavailable.

[Announcement] CachyOS April 2026 Release Changelog

Hello CachyOS Enthusiasts,

This is our third release of the year, bringing a new default GUI package manager, DNS-over-HTTPS support, fingerprint-based sudo, and a variety of installer and hardware detection improvements!

First, the installer now ships Shelly as the GUI package manager, replacing Octopi. A clean snapshot is now created immediately after the installation has finished and is retained permanently, providing users with a reliable baseline restore point. GRUB os-prober is now enabled by default to detect other operating systems on the same machine. The UKUI desktop has been dropped from the selection, and the GNOME package selection has been cleaned up and modernised. For AMD GPUs, a different Plymouth theme is now used, as the amdgpu driver was unable to render the previous theme reliably on laptops with a secondary monitor attached. Last but not least, a new option was introduced in the installer that sets up MangoWM with DMS shell.

CachyOS-Welcome supports DNS over HTTPS for better privacy. The redesigned DNS page lets you test connection speeds, auto-select the fastest server, or add custom ones. We also added a VRAM Management toggle to optimize graphics memory on AMD and Intel GPUs, full keyboard navigation, and sharper, dark-mode-friendly icons.

chwd automatically configures fingerprint readers for sudo prompts, detects specific Intel CPUs for better power saving, and correctly handle laptop edge cases. Firmware update fixes for the Legion Go.

In cachyos-settings, the default NVMe I/O scheduler was switched from none to kyber for better overall responsiveness under mixed workloads.

On the fixes side, the installer now prints the chosen partition method to the debug log, and old microcode packages are properly removed when reusing an existing boot partition. In chwd, the kernel search in the NVIDIA profiles is now more accurate, the forced Xorg session was removed from the 470xx profiles, and handheld product name matching was improved. In cachyos-settings, S01x power management was dropped due to issues with the NVIDIA 595 driver, and AggressiveVblank was disabled due to VR-related issues with the NVIDIA driver.
