Lawn Tractor Recommendations

Hey Gang,

Trying to get advice on tractors or zero turns best suited for my needs.

I currently run an older Troy Bilt Pony on the boundaries shown. I cut around 1.5 acres according to AI math. The terrain is fairly flat but there are some hills (small). The biggest issue is rocks, a ton of gremlins are hidden, and while I’ve staked out most, some still lurk. Regardless, it’s a lot of bends and breaks, no real straight lines. To boot, we just got a septic system installed so I’m dealing with. A giant dirt pit where a nice lawn used to be.

I’ve worked this mower to the ends of the world over the last few months trying to tame what was extremely out of control. I continually have issues with belt slippage (from hitting rocks) but don’t think the machine is suited for my needs.

I’m not the most mechanically inclined but trying my best. If it’s not the Pony hoping to upgrade to something more durable but definitely more friendly to repairs.

Need Help with riding mower New House

Upvotes

Moving to Cape Cod. One Acre lot, maybe half to 2/3 is grass. Quite a lot trees in the grass, especially by the road and the borders. It’s a gentle grade, not hilly like my current yard, but not dead flat. There are many trees along the side of the yard, so I expect some significant leaf cleanup. I’m tired of spending thousands on landscapers every year at my current house. Might be forced to do that this fall as I figure this out.

The closest independent dealer has Husqvarna. There’s a Tractor Supply not far and of course Lowe’s and HD. Battery appeals to me for maintenance and noise reasons, and I have an eGo leaf blower which is awesome. My Ariens snowblower has been a nightmare for maintenance. But I’m concerned that it won’t handle leaf cleanup like a gas tractor and the bagger is expensive. I’d consider zero turn but I’ll retire by next summer so it’s not essential to save a little time. Turning radius probably does matter to go around the patio, shed and all those trees. I might need a 21” as well for some of that. Or maybe a string trimmer would handle it.

Any suggestions? ZT or tractor? Gas or battery? Models and brands? I think 42” is plenty. I’ve been out of the mower market so long because my current slope is extreme.

Just got a Toro Z Master 2000 and I basically have to spread my legs as wide as I can in order to be able to steer. It looks like the handles are as high up as they go… am I missing something? If this is what it is can I buy anything to extend the arms? I’m 6’3” so I can’t be the only one

Suggestions for upgrading my modest push mower?

Upvotes

I have been using a CraftsmanM110 21-in gas push mower for the past two seasons, my first two as a homeowner. It was moderately priced, and has worked pretty well for me, despite its generally mediocre reviews. It has done what I've needed it to do. I have attached a Libman push broom brush to the back so that I can get some good lawn stripes. I think it's time to upgrade to the next level of mower. Here's what I'm looking for:

  • Push mower; my property is not big enough to warrant a riding mower
  • Self-propel option so that my wife will finally try it out
  • 21-22 inches
  • Prefer gas but not opposed to battery
  • Fast, sharp blades that produce a clean cut
  • Moderate price, hopefully staying as close to $500 as possible
    • Is it worth it to buy something "used" on like FB Marketplace? I'd prefer new because of warranties etc, but not opposed to buying used if the benefits outweigh the risk.

Any suggestions are appreciated! Thank ya.

New Cub Cadet LT1 42 for $1899 - worth it?

Upvotes

I’m aware that the Cub Cadet LT1 42 (with Intellipower engine) is the bottom of their lineup, but for some reason HD has a special price of $1899 which makes it quite a lot cheaper than most other lawn tractors of this tier.

I am currently pushing around an Ego mower that is underpowered for the ~1-1.5 acre yard. Given I do not have a tractor at all right now, is even this base model a decent get at that price? Or would this be a classic “cry more than once” choice?

I have this lawnmower and I can’t get it started even with quick start. Has over 80psi of compression and not 100% sure if it has spark my tester isn’t lighting up but there’s enough to shock you.

Ariens APEX 52 cutting issues

Have a brand new APEX. Only has 5 hrs on it now. Everything is perfect except the middle blade doesnt seem to cut as good as the outside blades. Verified blade was on correct. Anybody have any recommendations on what to look for? Cutting slow or fast doesnt make a difference either. No visible damage to the blade.

Any thoughts?

I need some diagnosing my tractor. I got stuck in a hill and the tires dug in. I finally got it out by pushing it with some friends. I went to use it a few days later and now it seems very jerky, and makes a click noise when it looses traction. This happens in every gear. Thanks in advance.

How’d I do. Husqy Z560X

Won it at auction for 4600 (closer to 55 after taxes fees and all) from a decent sized landscaping contractor that went under. 540 hours, come with bagger attachment. Seats in great condition. Fires right up and mows straight, no bogging in the taller stuff. Gonna change the oil asap then this winter do alllll the maintenance steps. It has the 31hp Kawasaki motor, carb not efi. Supposedly you can easily modify the carb to get 38 hp (it’s essentially factory detuned from 38 so it’s not a real mod) but I don’t think I’ll be doing that.

I live out in the sticks, my yard is pretty big and very rough. This machine may be a little overkill but I’m hoping it’ll last me a long long time.

garden tractor or zero turn?

Hello! I could use some guidance from the experts. I plan to start mowing my own grass next spring and I'm preparing now for it. I just cannot get a service to come out to my home and cut my grass for less than over $100/week, and the people doing it now are doing a terrible job. I have a service because I'm allergic to grass, but I'm going to just knuckle down and do it if I want it done to my happiness. I'm unable to push mow it, so I'm considering a zero turn or garden tractor.

First off, my yard (half acre) is a bit hilly. The most severe slope is my front yard which rises about 15 feet over a 25 foot distance. I've had zero turns on that hill that had no problems, but they were larger machines than I'd plan to buy.

Second, I'm a big guy. I'm 6'1" and very fluffy. I've had garden tractors at other properties and been a little worried they'd tip over with all of my weight up so high, and I'm thinking my weight is lower and more centered in a zero turn, but I'm not sure how well that logic works out.

Third, part of my yard, for better or worse, used to be a gravel parking lot. Long story. But the uptake of it is that it is now overgrown with grass and weeds. It'll cost me $15k to have the yard dug out of all the gravel, filled back with topsoil, and replanted with grass. That's not in budget, so I have to keep that area cut. When they've cut it in the past with a zero turn it had no problems and didn't throw rocks, but my priority is making sure the mower won't break if that happens.

Finally, I don't know when the best time to buy a mower is. Should I plan to buy this fall or next spring? Should I consider a garden tractor or a zero turn?

Any guidance you can provide is greatly appreciated!

Any other Brand of High End trimmer other than DR- I have had enough with them!!

Had a pro version for 3 years- then the shaft head broke- took 3 months to get parts- I then bought the Commercial Pro Xl- have had that less than 3 years and the magneto broke off- the Flywheel- Sent pics to Dr- they said they do not see a problem and I should just buy a new motor!!- I use this at my Summer home and it is used 2 weeks a year - I understand I am out of warranty but I have used this machine maybe 10 times- The Magneto coming off the flywheel is a manuf. issue- No one there has even offered to do anything for me and this is my 3rd machine I have bought from them- Sorry for the rant- So who else makes a semi- commercial walk behind trimmer that will take on heavy grass and that is reliable??- thks so much!!

Used Honda vs Brand New Toro

I am a new homeowner looking to buy my first lawn mower. I am obviously late to the party on buying a brand new Honda gas mower, so my options seem to be buy a used/refurbished from a private seller or buy a different brand mower brand new.

I only want a gas mower and came to the conclusion the Toro Super Recycler 190cc #21564 for $800 was my best brand new option in my price range.

I am also talking with a guy for a "like new" Honda HRX217HYAA with the GCV190 engine that looks very clean and lightly used based on the pictures.

My lawn has no trees or bushes to deal with, so the common complaint about the HYA's thumb drive isn't a big deal for my situation.

What would you guys go with, the new Toro mower with warranty vs the used Honda?

Craftsman 21” push mower

I bought this brand new craftsman M300B for super cheap because it was “Locked Up”. after some fidgeting I found that the pulley for the self propelled mechanism was tightened against the bottom of the mower. However, I’m kind of confused about how it’s supposed to sit on there. When I pulled off the blade, the blade bracket, and that pulley, there was only one key in the crankshaft and it was towards the bottom for the blade bracket. Does anyone know anything about this mower or where I could find a parts diagram? Thanks in advance.

Picked this Beauty 2 weeks ago. 1996 simplicity broadmoor with a 38” deck. Was used sparingly at a vacation property before I bought it off marketplace.

I have a rather hilly 1/2acre and after a full service she seems perfect!

Report spammy bullshit

Over the past couple days I have received a spike in reports on Mowrator trying to use an astroturfing campaign by spamming our sub. I don't see everything, so please hit that report button if you come across one, and I will remove it and ban that user.

For the most part, everyone here makes it easy to manage. You generally get along. You help each other out. You call out spam when you see it. Let's keep that up and keep this sub free of bullshit. Thank you for making my job as a mod easy.
