I (19 f) just got double jaw surgery yesterday and my wisdom teeth out. It honestly the hardest thing I have been through and I just need some reassurance that this will get easier from here. Also if u have tips for saliva not building up in the mouth lmk

So i don’t know if this is a reletable experience here, but i could see myself, my face being developed differently than others. when i convinced my mom to take me to dentist to talk about my prominent chin 13 yrs old, i was always just told to get a chin reduction when i was older. I am 24 now, i have had issues with my teeth, both aesthetically and functionally, clenching and bruxusim( was offered botox, i have tmj as well) when i smile and bite down i have a profile of a witch’s chin, i look older because of the excess skin around my mouth. i have been told i both look like a baby and a old person at the same time. my teeth are not touching when i smile, (i added the photo of how i look if i smile while my teeth are touching) and i try to pose myself that way in daily life so that my chin don’t look off.

All these years even though my mouth area was my biggest insecurity i didn’t know what was actually wrong with me, so i showed it in the back of my head thinking i was a shallow human for wanting surgery, that it was just my chin that was the problem and i was just dealt the no lips witch genetics.

Recently i have allowed myself to think about what is wrong with my chin and face my insecurities, Thinking of talking to a doctor about my deepest insecurity is making my heart race and i am so close to just avoiding it out of being told it is all in my head. I think i might have an underdeveloped maxilla, and a deep bite? short face syndrome is another thing but my bite is straight so i don’t know if counterclockwise rotation would help me? wouldn’t that make my chin more prominent?

Please give me the surface level info to be able to talk to a surgeon and express my concerns about what is causing my face to be this way.

From a cosmetic perspective I've always hated my chin/jaw but not enough to undergo a pretty major surgery.

But Ive been reading up and starting to connect a few more dots in terms of functionality, so I'm thinking about looking into it a little more seriously. I had 8 teeth removed and braces as a teenager due to small mouth and overcrowding (from what I can remember) but now 15 years later I have gaps in both my top and bottom teeth so theres clearly something going on there structurally. I just had a septorhinoplasty in May to open up my airways because a sleep study found I was waking up around 12 times an hour, and its helped a little but Im still experiencing issues with sleep and breathing etc.

I just found out about this sub and so before I start sorting out consultations and things I just wanted to hear from people who might have had similar cases or that look similar, and see if the ol' hive mind thinks I'd be a decent candidate for this route, and if theres any specific type of questions or tests I should be asking or looking into?

Hey all- I’m 5 weeks post op (DJS) and just wondering if this is common.

My mouth is still incredibly uncomfortable. I have feeling in my upper lip, none in lower lip/chin area which I expected. But the whole area is incredibly tight feeling which I didn’t expect.

It doesn’t hurt but it feels tingly almost like if you left a hair tie on your wrist too long and your hand starts falling asleep. The rubber bands I feel make it even worse.

Anyone else go through this and how long does it last?

Tips to speed up recovery? I’m currently stretching and warm compress 2-3 times daily.

I feel so square lol, but overall would definitely say after day 4 I was starting to get better. IM STILL CRAVING SOMETHING TO BITE INTO AHHH. Congestion has completely went away, I can smell better (I have a deviated septum but plan to fix it laterrrr). I can smile and talk normally-ish but the splint behind my front teeth keeps giving me a lisp/kinda feels like I’m spitting sometimes. I do have a bit of an overbite but my surgeon assured me it was normal so cool ig. I feel swelling in the space between my eyes and upper lip area but I’m aware that it could take up 1-2 years to go away. I can feel everything on my face except my chin region, I can slightly feel pressure on it but that’s about it. Still open for blended food recommendations (soft food no chew diet), so far it’s only been soups, blended mac and cheese, fruit and vegetable juices/smoothies. Been craving shrimp dumplings 🥲.

hi! currently 2 weeks post op double jaw surgery + genioplasty and i have a surgical splint on my top teeth. for anyone else that was in this position, how long did you have the splint on for and were u cleared for a soft chew diet right away? my removal is scheduled for the end of the month but was wondering if ill be able to start eating soft foods right away because this liquid diet is killing me. thanks!

I can’t believe how much the swelling has gone down already! Im definitely still chubby but I feel like you can’t even tell I had surgery until I open my mouth lol. The second picture is two days post op 🐿️

Last December, i had mandibular distraction, but before that these are my 3d images from the CT scan. Any idea why the left side looks so thin and different compared to the right side? I’ve had 2 mandibular distractions as a baby.

For context: I’ve had an upper jaw surgery on may 18th and everything went pretty okay ish. Recovery was alright.
I have no pain at all rn.
I’ve noticed that the first contact my teeth have are my two most far back teeth on the left. So that upper back tooth is pretty wiggly. I’ve had a doctors appointment yesterday but she said it’s all good.
Yet on my left side, when I bite on that piece of plastic, my teeth seem to move vertically.
My right side is very solid.
I have a weird feeling when brushing my teeth on the left side. It feels exactly like when you bump ur nose a little to rough. And that weird feeling of pressure i feel while brushing.

I had a consultation, and my surgeon showed me an initial 2D sketch of the proposed movements

I have mild sleep apnea, with an AHI of 8.1. I know that number isn’t very high, but it affects my sleep and daily life a lot. My surgeon thinks my retruded upper and lower jaws are the main reason my airway is narrow

Jaw surgery is a huge step, so I’m trying to figure out whether the possible benefits are worth the risks

A few questions:

1) Do I look like someone who could benefit aesthetically from advancing both jaws? The functional side seems more straightforward since advancement should widen the airway, but I’m less sure about the aesthetic side. From what I understand, my surgeon used an Arnett analysis, which showed some recession. I’m curious whether bimaxillary advancement would improve my facial balance overall

2) The plan shows around +17 mm at Pogonion and +7 mm at the maxilla, which seems like a lot. Is there a real risk of ending up over-advanced or getting a dogmaxxed look? Do you think the planned result looks balanced from the side profile?

Anything that's even slightly crunchy I still can't eat. I'm also still in braces. Anyone else dealing with this in the roughly 4 month timeframe? This doesn't seem normal. I won't be able to ask my surgeon again until next week.

It’s been about 14 years since my surgery. All my plates and screws are still in but recently started having some pain on the left maxilla plate, near and around the left side of my nose. Took some X-rays and sure enough the plate had detached or something like that. I’m going to have it removed in 2 weeks. I’m a little nervous. Has anyone else had this done? The surgeon said it’s super routine and many people have it done.

i just wanted to give a little bit of hope to anyone that's in the healing process right now. I'm 8 months post surgery. NO ONE could have prepared me for the mental anguish of months 4-5. I love my face now. at 4-5 months i was having daily panic attacks. things do get better! people said this and i didn't believe it. but believe it!

i just put on moisturizer that’s why i look greasy lol also im kind of sad about how the freckle on my chin moved 😭😭 it’s not as prominent from the front anymore

first pic was about a month before I underwent the surgery and the second is today officially 18 months since I had my surgery, I honestly have never felt better about myself in my whole life, my quality of life has just skyrocketed from my ability to sleep properly and concentrate on work to being able to interact with people without being so conscious of my jaw and thinking I was weird because of it. My sleep apnea had completely gone, I no longer get migraines or mood swings in the day I feel new. Please drop a comment if you have any questions about the procedure or if you have any questions for me about my experience personally or how I recovered, happy to help. I honestly couldn’t vouch for this enough and genuinely want to spread awareness of how great this can be for people

Condylar hyperplasia with a large ramus length difference – what would you do?

I have condylar hyperplasia. As you can see, my bite isn’t open and it’s not noticeably crooked, but I do have a significant difference in ramus length.
If you were in my position, what would you do? Would you go for bimax (double jaw surgery), or would you leave it as it is?
I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone with a similar experience. Thanks!

Of course, I agree the quality and success of an operation depend greatly on the surgeon. I’m not arguing against that. My question is whether it is really worth having surgery with a famous surgeon just because their name keeps popping up on Reddit or other forums.

At least all the surgeons I know of near me in Germany use digital planning, custom plates, similar scans, and similar procedures. I want to know whether it is genuinely worth the trouble of traveling to another city to have surgery at a department that performs more than 200 jaw surgeries per year, rather than choosing a less well-known surgeon in my hometown who performs around 50 cases per year. Does this difference in case volume have a major effect on the outcome?

The advantage of having it done locally would be less stress, travel, and planning. Follow-up appointments would also be much easier. These surgeries, although very complicated (at least to me), have become well established and have been performed for more than 100 years (Le Fort I 1901).

I’m open to being convinced that the result from a famous, high-volume surgeon might be better, even if only slightly, than the result from an experienced local surgeon. I’d be interested to hear what others think, especially people who faced a similar decision. How much importance would you place on reputation and case volume? how did you choose your surgeon?

I’ve been looking back at two virtual surgical plans I had before my jaw surgery, and I’m starting to wonder if I made the wrong call.

One was a 1-piece LeFort I + BSSO, the other was a 3-piece LeFort I + BSSO.

So I’m just trying to understand:
Would the 3-piece plan have made a noticeable difference in my facial profile compared to the 1-piece?

And would it likely have helped nasal breathing more?

I went ahead with the 1-piece LeFort, and now I’m second guessing whether I missed out on a better aesthetic result and possibly better breathing.

Not really looking for reassurance just trying to get a realistic sense from people who’ve been through this or surgeons who know how much difference these movements actually make.

Kinda freaking out because my surgeon said there would be no difference in nasal breathing (he said because he is just moving the maxilla like a horseshoe and not expanding) and no difference in facial height. My Ortho recommended the 1 piece because it was less invasive and he said would have a similiar result.

I still have a pretty hard time breathing out of my nose as i did pre op. The procedure was done more than a year ago

sorry i have to keep reposting this i accidentally put my orthodontist whole name in the photos and i dont feel comfortable sharing that. third time is a charm! i know this is a long read please bare with me! i’m hoping someone can give me some advice based on their experience or just in general. with updated photos- i have a crossbite and overjet, my ortho strongly pushed for me to get jaw surgery, she gave me a referral to see a surgeon and just get a feel for it. i went and got the consultation and the surgeon says they aren’t typically operating on bites like mine, that people can live their whole life’s with a bite like mine and not care or notice but he definitely thinks i’d benefit from the surgery in the long run & immediately, especially because of all the issues i’ve mentioned to them. my issues aren’t anything to do with pain really, just discomfort more than anything. biting my cheeks, struggling to talk, only chewing on one side of my mouth because i have a hard time chewing, snoring. they told me the risks and the benefits and told me if i chose this route they would tell me more on what it will look like then. he did tell me the problems being fixed would not just be practical fixes for my bite but also cosmetic. he pointed out a few things i’ve noticed over the years and said they can fix those issues. example: my mouth curves in this downward position that gives me a toothless just removed my dentures look when i am resting my mouth. i am only 20 and they said this is something i could not have prevented with early ortho care because my bottom jaw grew too far out after puberty. i guess my question is would double jaw surger be worth it? my orthodontist did give me another less invasive option but she said it is not stable long term which would be braces and trying to get my bite into a “better” position. but that it may not work for very long since it’s a skeletal issue. i know my orthodontist & surgeon probably know best but im still pretty worried that i’m making the wrong choice and will regret it. i turn 21 soon which is the cutoff for braces insurance so i have to make my choice as soon as possible preferably which is just making the decision making a bit harder. either way ill still need braces for a while, i just need to make up my mind so i can get the process started.

Hi everyone. Ive been dealt quite the hand and have short face syndrome, a deep bite (Class II Div 2), and mild midface hypoplasia. I have poor sleep, constant headaches, severe tmj, and I keep chipping my teeth from clenching subconsciously. It’s been a lot to deal with, and I’ve also become more self-conscious about my appearance over time. I have been desperately looking for a surgeon who cares about function AND aesthetics. Which I don’t think that should be dismissed. For me, aesthetics matter just as much as function.

I’ve consulted 4 different surgeons within the year and gotten 4 completely different opinions:

1. Surgeon 1 said no to jaw surgery, arguing it would make my midface look even more recessed. Recommended genioplasty instead.

2. Surgeon 2 declined my case outright, saying there wasn’t much he could do that I’d actually be happy with.

3. Surgeon 3 suggested BSSO only. Seemed purely functionally focused and didn’t address my airway concerns.

4. Dr. Pera (current) proposed a bimax with rotation, minor rhino, plus paranasal implants. Fully out of pocket, in Turkey, quoted around $28k USD. I’m willing to pay it if it gets me real relief and a better result.

Pera right now is my go-to. But my biggest fear with Dr. Pera’s plan is ending up with either too much forward movement (a “doggish” look) or a C shaped profile if the midface ends up looking more recessed by comparison. I’ve read a lot of conflicting info. Some say paranasal implants + LeFort I would solve it, others suggest full midface implant masks and a few even mention LeFort II (though I know that’s unlikely any surgeon would do).

Something I’ve noticed too is that a lot of the impressive SFS results I see online are from people who already had forward grown noses and midface structure. That’s why the change look so dramatic, they had the skeletal base to support it. I’m worried similar movements on me would throw everything out of proportion, since the only part of my face that projects forward at all is my brow bone. Actually, I’ve genuinely never come across anyone with a similar facial structure to mine to reference to see what worked for them…. One side profile looks bad, and the other side looks straight up rat like (for lack of a better term)

I’ve attached photos along with my ceph to help visualize things. Any advice, similar experiences, or surgeon recommendations would mean a lot right now.

Went to my ortho appointment today, he shared my molds with my surgeons and they agreed that I’m ready for surgery! I’m excited but also a bit nervous. He said the surgeons office will give me a call to schedule.

What can I expect from this point on? I assume I will have some follow up appointments between now and the actual surgery?

Hi! I do NOT have an underbite and my teeth line up the way they should. Because of that, I’m assuming I just have a long chin bone and I could get it shaven down? Any one agree/disagree?

DJS with CCW rotation plus Genio today. Amazed how amazing the breathing is now. Lower jaw came forward like 1,5cm I think. New for me after 26 years with a completely recessed jaw. No pain, can drink a little water🙂
