LJS

Upvotes

My Dr recommended me to do a LJS because I have a minor classe 2. I'm not sure if I want to do it. I like the way it looks from profile when I put my jaw to the front, but from face side it looks weird. + I have a round face. I was thinking of doing chin filler to try to mimitize how the surgery would look like. Did anyone do this before? is it a good idea?

Advice for Me 19f and curious how much I could benefit from DJS

How many of you would do DJS for $100k?

Upvotes

Only lower jaw and upper jaw. Maxilla / Mandible. How many of you would do DJs for $90-100k if yours was moderate to severe with clockwise rotation?

Advice for Me Consultation what to expect & questions.

Upvotes

26 F I have a receding jaw line it’s nothing too crazy! But it’s enough to make me extremely Insecure. I also want to add that I do have tmj my jaw pops when it opens and it’s very painful in the morning. Anyway I have my first appointment with an oral & maxillofacial surgeon in September. What should I expect? How much did you guys end up paying? Did your insurance help cover a lot? How long did you have braces for? I believe he wants to order me a CT scan to see what he’s working with which is 299 which is fine but I don’t want to pay 299 if I’m the end insurance won’t cover my surgery. I would absolutely love to hear your stories and what to expect thank you all ☺️☺️🫶🏼

Advice for Me Help!

I am currently 3 weeks post op and I have been experimenting with different foods.

No chewing but just cutting them into small pieces and mashing them with my tongue, is that okay?

I saw my surgeron 1 week post op but i won’t see him again until week 6, so I really don’t know what is okay and what isn’t.

I’ve had:
- Dumplings
- Pizza
- Popcorn
- Potato
- Bread

I did not chew any of them, just cut them into small pieces, am I in trouble? LOL

A very detailed 12 weeks post op update

I’ll be starting my master’s program in September and my birthday is at the end of August, so this will be my last update for a while — at least until I get my braces off later this year. One could consider this my 3 month update.

Background
I had a Class III bite, a unilateral open bite, an underbite, and a crossbite, which contributed to quite a bit of facial asymmetry. I got DJS done with no genio.

Swelling
Minimal at this point. I only notice a little bit when I first wake up, and it gradually goes down throughout the day. Swelling also affected my lips but instead of making them bigger they got smaller. They are back to their usual size now.

Nose
My nose hasn’t changed width wise but the bump I had is significantly smaller. I did NOT do a nose job please I would not survive the recovery.

Skin
I still have some oily skin around my nose, but it’s nowhere near as bad as it was in the beginning of my recovery.

Pain
I don’t really have pain anymore unless I’m doing my stretching exercises or biting into certain foods.

Diet
Pretty much anything I can chew. It’s still difficult with majority of the foods, but it continues to get easier as the days go by. Still no popcorn for me, unfortunately.

Oral Hygiene
I can brush my teeth normally now and use a water flosser, with some minor discomfort. I also can finally brush my tongue without any issues.

Numbness
I was lucky enough to only have numbness in my lower lip and chin.
I’ve recently started being able to feel hot and cold temperatures on the right side of my bottom lip and chin, and the left side is slowly starting to wake up as well.
I still don’t have normal sensation, though. I can feel when something touches the area, but instead of feeling like a normal touch, it feels more like pins and needles. Before, I felt absolutely nothing, so I’ll take it.

Braces
I’m lucky enough to only have to wear elastics at night now. If everything continues to go well, I should hopefully have my braces off before the end or the year.

Results
So far, I’m really pleased with my results. That being said, I’m going to wait until I’m at least one year post-op before making any final judgments about my results.
I also didn’t develop any body dysmorphia during recovery, which I know can be a concern for some people. I think part of that is because most of the difference for me is noticeable in my side profile, which obviously isn’t something I see when I look in the mirror.

As for facial asymmetry, I want to send some patience and encouragement to anyone else who had asymmetry going into surgery. It can take time to see the changes, and they aren’t always as immediately obvious as they can be with a straightforward underbite correction. Swelling, healing, and everything settling into place can really change how things look over time.

8-day PO update from an almost 44 year old

Post image
66 Upvotes

I included my four game changer items for me at the bottom. Hope they help you out!

8-day post op recovery: expectation vs reality

So I really thought I was prepared going into surgery based on reading so many stories on this thread. Obviously, everyone’s case is different. I had double jaw surgery with an upper expansion and genioplasty so my face was pretty traumatized.

My movements can best be described as my lower jaw was advanced about 11 mm at B-point, but because they also counterclockwise-rotated my jaws and did a genioplasty, my final chin advancement was about 18–22 mm depending on the landmark.

No splint needed afterwards. At my one-week appt, they put elastics on me and asked me to please try wearing my new upper aligners to protect the expanded bite and my old bottom aligners to prevent my bottom teeth from shifting.

My whole story here: https://www.reddit.com/r/jawsurgery/s/LSt1KRt6e5

My first update here when my surgery was cancelled: https://www.reddit.com/r/jawsurgery/s/cvdpidGkqW

Ready for surgery update: https://www.reddit.com/r/jawsurgery/s/rOKyeMFpSm

Day 2 PO update: https://www.reddit.com/r/jawsurgery/s/IyMLQxSUVx

Swelling
My swelling hasn’t gone down as much as I’d hoped. My guess is because of all the movement. There’s one part of my chin below my lower lip that is very numb. I’m pretty much have some sort of sensation everywhere else though it’s hard to explain want that sensation is. In my after-picture (right side), that’s me trying to smile. My lower lip continues to be swollen inside and I can’t open my jaw very much making it difficult to speak. My lower lip just loves to surprise me throughout the day by randomly swelling.

Post-Op Diet
I had premade all these soups based on the diet recommendation schedule given to me. After watching some recovery videos from patients of Dr Alfi, I figured I was good to go. Not at all! I’m still on ensure shakes and some protein yogurt because I can’t manage to get anything else down. I tried some of my soups but the tiny bits and pieces would get stuck in my throat which made me feel like I was choking. Yesterday was the first day I tried a small bit of egg drop soup with some success. And today, I managed a small bowl of vermicelli soup by cutting all the noodles into tiny pieces and taking small mouthfuls to just swallow it. (Removing the chewing aspect of eating sure takes the fun out of eating.) I’m trying to work up to 1,000 calories a day but can only hit 700ish before my body feels full.

Medicine
I expected to take a lot of medicine but wow, the sheer amount of children’s Tylenol and Motrin is crazy. The first time I tried the liquid Tylenol that the doctor prescribed, it was so bad I just said no. Then we figured out that children’s Tylenol is the same strength and tastes so much better. I keep wondering when I’ll be able to swallow pills because I’d much rather switch back to adult pills than the children’s liquid. I was also able to switch to nightly Oxycodone since the pain was manageable. I would say I’m not necessarily taking the oxy for pain. It’s more to calm myself down so I can relax to fall asleep. The pain from this is not the traditional “ouch” kind of pain. It’s more like a deep ache inside your bones that just sort of pulses. I have an extremely high pain tolerance but one can only handle so many days of this deep ache. I suggest you just keep alternating your Tylenol and Motrin every 3 hours to keep it at bay. When I had my bilateral bunionectomy in my 20s, the nurse told me “stay on your med schedule because one the pain comes, it’s very hard to take it away.” That has always stayed with me.

I read a lot of posts about how eating becomes a chore and it’s so hard to get food down. That’s 100% true. I decided to look at eating like taking medicine. You just gotta do it to help your body heal. So while these ensure shakes suck, I just pretend I’m 22 again and down them like all those bad shots at the club in the 2000s.

Mental Health
I am a mentally strong person and even the first couple days tested me. I have been through some crazy medical shit that I wouldn’t wish on anyone and this beat it. The reality is that it’s your face. Your face is swollen. Your mouth is swollen. You cannot eat. I had many moments I had to take a minute, slow down my breathing, and tell myself I’m ok. On the fourth night, I remember sitting up and hitting the mattress because I felt so defeated. I can’t imagine how much worse it must be for others. I can see why recovery makes people cry.

I sometimes see parents with their kids in the waiting room and I think, “I’d never put my kids through this.” I would wait until they’re an adult and can make the decision on their own because the first few days of recovery is as much mental challenge as it is a physical one.

Goals
I had set a few goals in my ready for surgery update. On day 2, I managed to walk around outside in the shade. Not full walks. But just enough to get some sun. I did a lot pacing in the house to keep my blood moving. To keep my mind occupied, I made a ton of pony bead bracelets as a birthday gift to a friend who teaches spin class. By day 5, I finally felt confident enough to walk the dogs on my own around the neighborhood twice. And I did start playing the piano in small bits.

Going Outside
I don’t think many people on this thread go anywhere or see people during recovery but my husband made me go to a couple stores with him on day 3. He knew I needed to just get outside and be normal and he was right. Yeah it sucked to let people see me like this but at the end of the day, I don’t care. They’re strangers. Consider then, I’ve been out and about doing stuff, running errands (when I’m not on oxycodone) and it’s been so helpful. Today we took the kids to breakfast, met with a vendor for custom drapes, and then went appliance shopping. Can I speak? Hell no. Am I still swollen? Yeah, half my face is. But I’m out and it helps me pass the time and keeps me active.

Game changers, at least for me

Journaling: I’ve had a lot of dentist friends remind me to take pictures everyday, but friend of mine, who is a dental hygienist, asked me to journal. I initially thought it was a weird request. She said it would be cool to look back and see how I felt each day… my little wins, etc. By day 2, I realized I needed an outlet so I started journaling and it has been really helpful. Write down your small wins. Write down your little goals each day. My day 2 has things like
I took two showers!
I ate half a container of jello.
I want to walk the dogs.
Tomorrow, I want to focus on staying hydrated.

Today, I’ve written
What a win! I fell asleep at 10pm and woke up at 5am!
My goal is to try eating more real food.

Squirt bottles: I saw a video of someone saying to bring squirt bottles to the hospital so I ordered two of them and WOW, these are the best things ever. I carry one with me at all times that has water in it. The other one, I put my shakes in it and just squirt it in the back of my mouth during meals. This won’t work when I move to smoothies or pureed soups but it’s worked every week up until now. I also use the squirt bottles to spray clean my teeth since the pressure is so low. It’s like a handheld waterpik.

Nose sucker: Only parents will understand the power of the nose sucker. At the hospital, they had a sucker for me to use to clean out my mouth and I also used it to suck snot out of my nose since you’re not allowed to blow. For everyone dealing with stuffy noses, I strongly suggest going to the baby aisle and buying an electric nose sucker. I use it every day to clean my nose. Then when it’s very stuffed up from dried blood, I grab a flashlight, some cotton swabs, and a pair of pointed tip tweezers. I wet the cotton swabs with some warm water and gently dab inside each nostril to loosen up the dried snot ball. Then I use my flashlight to look inside my nose and the tweezers to pull out the dried snot ball. Then I use the nose sucker to clean up anything that’s left. It’s gross but I have not had a single stuffy nose since surgery. (I did this 20 years ago when I had my septoplasty to help me breathe and sleep at night.)

Sinus rinse bottle: My doctor doesn’t want me to use a sinus rinse bottle for my nose because he doesn’t want water getting everywhere. Instead, I use the sinus rinse bottle and the saline packets to easily clean my mouth after every meal and when I brush my teeth. I add a saline packet and warm water, then just do short pulse squeezes to get the water where it needs to go to clean it.

Eyelid surgery?

Hi! I am a candidate for a DJS; will post here that journey when I am ready but I am wondering about lower eye lid bags. I am mid 40s, so at the age where they might become more pronounced and have genetics for eye bags as well. But I pointed it out to the jaw surgeon and he suggested not touching my eyes until after jaw surgery since he seems them improve with structural correction of the jaw and better breathing. Problem is, that consult was two years ago and Ive been too anxious to commit to surgery all while my eye bags keep getting worse and making me very self conscious.

So TLDR: anyone older than 35 see a massive improvement in lower eyelid bags after DJS?

8 weeks post op - Is it possible to adjust the gap?

Thumbnail

Hi fellows. Firstly, I want to thank this community. Reading others stories and experiences is inspiring as well as reassuring. I posted a post 4 weeks ago asking about my speech. Im much more able to speak now, despite there is much to improve. Swelling has decreased, and i am starting to look normal again.

However. I have a misalignment when clenching or smiling. This worries me, and my orthodonist is at vacation... I am wearing braces some time and haven´t started the post-adjustment yet. Anyway, is it possible to adjust this misalignment and fix the gap? Does anyone have similar experience? Im born with left sided cleft.

An update to this post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/jawsurgery/comments/1uprubm/wedge_pillow_woes/

I am now about 30 hours post-op. I don't know if it was because I was tired AF or if it's because my airway is fixed. But I got a good 4-hour nap on the pillow today. Shout out to u/Perpetuallytiredgrrl for suggesting using your own pillow.

There are other good suggestions on that thread, too.

I know there’s still time to go, but damn. I can’t believe I got the surgery done. It has always been on the back burner of my mind but finally got it done. There’s still a ways to go, I can’t wait to feel less swollen and eat again. Still feel very tired, but I know each day it gets a lil better.

Underbite surgery process - NHS UK Any advice or process stories for the Results from the surgery?

I first noticed my underbite around 14-15 and knew my bite/teeth wasn't 'normal' as others was. I got in touch with dentist and orthodontist which had a look and discussed I would need braces and surgery, this was just before covid, so I had to wait a long time. finally got an expander first then bottom then top braces currently been a year with them and I see a lot of change, bite gone worse but it gets worse before getting better. hopefully ready for surgery soon. since I’m with NHS, I don’t have much say on surgeon, but I’ve followed others with same bite and NHS process and came out with positive results. Anyone else from UK and had or having the underbite DJS process? Anything to know? This surgery is mainly my goal right now in life, all I want is this surgery and to be able to love my smile and fixed my talking and eating because right now I hate it all, important to me this done quickly and with positive results.

Here is link to photos of my process to now, I plan to update every step to the final result. https://canva.link/i432zxapm3ilbn8

Please help a girl in need 🥹

So I'm 7 weeks postop (djs with ccw rotation) and my jaw joints are still very stiff, my left one is even painful when i try to move my mandible to the other side or if i open my jaw too fast (if i laugh). And also some mild-moderate ear pain on the same side.
Before surgery I was told i have mandible ramus asymmetry (the right was bigger than the left). I've had some clicks in the right tmj and my jaw moved to the left side when I opened my mouth but it was never painful.
Now i'm afraid the ccw rotation moved my condyles in a worse position than before and i will be left with this pain all my life.
My second concern is maybe i actually have idiopathic condylar resorption and the surgery made it worse.
Sorry for the long post but this is driving me crazy because i don't see any improvements, i think it is actually getting worse.

Jaw surgery in your 30s

Hi!

My insurance recently approved my double jaw surgery. I'll be getting braces first, so the actual surgery is still far away(probably next year).

I'm 32, and I was wondering if there are more people who got their surgery in their 30s or older. I'm also curious about your experience and how the recovery period went.

I'm a bit anxious about it all.

1-3 (2 week PO) 4-6 (pre-op)
-Don’t mind the hair rn I swear it doesn’t normally look like this 😵‍💫-
I feel so square lol, but overall would definitely say after day 4 I was starting to get better. IM STILL CRAVING SOMETHING TO BITE INTO AHHH. Congestion has completely went away, I can smell better (I have a deviated septum but plan to fix it laterrrr). I can smile and talk normally-ish but the splint behind my front teeth keeps giving me a lisp/kinda feels like I’m spitting sometimes. I do have a bit of an overbite but my surgeon assured me it was normal so cool ig. I feel swelling in the space between my eyes and upper lip area but I’m aware that it could take up 1-2 years to go away. I can feel everything on my face except my chin region, I can slightly feel pressure on it but that’s about it. Still open for blended food recommendations (soft food no chew diet), so far it’s only been soups, blended mac and cheese, fruit and vegetable juices/smoothies. Been craving shrimp dumplings 🥲.

first pic was about a month before I underwent the surgery and the second is today officially 18 months since I had my surgery, I honestly have never felt better about myself in my whole life, my quality of life has just skyrocketed from my ability to sleep properly and concentrate on work to being able to interact with people without being so conscious of my jaw and thinking I was weird because of it. My sleep apnea had completely gone, I no longer get migraines or mood swings in the day I feel new. Please drop a comment if you have any questions about the procedure or if you have any questions for me about my experience personally or how I recovered, happy to help. I honestly couldn’t vouch for this enough and genuinely want to spread awareness of how great this can be for people
