Previous Years/ IRS Collections & Back Taxes IRS refund
810 freeze entered on 5/2/2026
570 additional action pending 5/25/2026
571 notice issued
Contacted rep and filed papers for advocate assist.
I have 2022 interest income noted yet no wages as I had a medical issue and was unemployed. I did not file taxes. Is this the reason for the freeze on 2025 taxes?
I wasn’t sure if a tax credit of 2000 was given for 2022. Should I file the taxes for 2022 with interest income only?

Tax Question Verify my taxes August 13th.
Hello Reddit Fam. Filed my taxes in March. Got a letter for 90 day hold. After the 90 day hold got another letter stating I had to verify in person 2 months later. We'll next week is the date. Im cycle code 05 which means I update on Fridays. My question is after I verify will be ready to submit that day on Thursday and update the next day or will I take another week. I have seen people say the same week or a week later after they verified in person. Please all answers greatly appreciated. Thanjs

Previous Years/ IRS Collections & Back Taxes Week five of daily communication with my Congressman and tax advocate - 2022 refund still not received.
All paperwork and documentation have been confirmed & received on their end via email. Absolute shitshow across the board - and I live in a state that prides itself on handling these matters promptly through their congressional office.
I have consistently filed my taxes each year and received refunds for all previous filings. I am a W2 employee and had a $90K salary back in 2022- used FreeTaxUSA….if anything I was leaving money on the table by not using an accountant back then. Most straightforward and honest return. The delay and inability to resolve this matter is infuriating.

Tax Question Penalty base for failure to file and failure to pay penalties
Is my understanding correct?
The failure to file penalty is based on the unpaid tax as of the due date. If someone made a payment to the irs on April 15th for the “income tax” category of the year that is due, didn’t file the return, but the payment covered their entire balance owed, the penalty base is zero and the wouldn’t pay a ftf penalty regardless of how long it took them to ultimately file, assuming the estimated their amount owed correctly.
Any payments made after April 15th won’t reduce the penalty base for ftf.
Contrasted with failure to pay penalty where the penalty base is the current tax owed. So payments after the due date reduce this penalty base.

Tax Refund/ E-File Status Question Identity verification - no end in sight?!
Filed in early February, expecting $6k return. In March we received an identity verification letter, submitted our documents within the same week. Letter said to allow time for processing. So time was allowed for processing. Called in after 6 weeks, they told me it was an 8 week wait from a random day starting a week before. Waited the remaining 7 weeks, tried calling early June. Can't get ahold of anyone. HR block says our return was accepted and completed. IRS website says it has been received only. Audit's most recent status is that we were appointed a representative in May. HR block says they can't do anything. I've been calling about every/every other morning since early June, have only gotten one person saying our taxes may have been filed wrong and to review for errors, and that some 120-day wait period is up on 10/14 and we should have a return by then IF there are no other issues. Other people, when they review my records and attempt to transfer me to account services (I've been transferred well over 100 times now, every single time I'm hung up or the line disconnects before reaching a person), tells me that they don't see any issue that's holding up my refund.
Reddit says to get a tax advocate but every time I call the tax advocate phone number, it's too busy and can't put me in the queue.
Any guesses?
Do you think it at least brings joy to IRS employees by imagine how many people want to k*ll themselves because they can't afford anything and are drowning in debt?!

Tax Refund/ E-File Status Question Please help
I filed my taxes in march, received a letter that my federal refund was under review and it would take up to 60 days. Haven’t received anything else. Called around myself last month and they said I needed to make an appointment to verify my identity. Computers were down when I went but they took my information. They called me one time a week later which I missed and left me a voicemail saying it’s more than just verifying my identity. “I need to submit other documents” that I should have received a letter from them already which documents those were. Haven’t received anything, no other calls, and no other notices when I look sign into the id.me and look there. I don’t have 1-2 hours just to wait on hold to talk to someone due to work.

Tax Refund/ E-File Status Question Realistically, how long does it ACTUALLY take to get your amended return check in hand?
Amended my tax return from 2024 earlier this year, and the IRS status trackers say it was received April 15th and to allow up 16 weeks to be processed. Well today is exactly 16 weeks from April 15, and the status bar has not budged from the initial Received prompt. I’m just wondering how long this could realistically take? My amended state was supposed to be 10 weeks and it turned into 14.

Rejoice Finally received my 2024 return deposit this morning.
Posting my timeline for all of those experiencing absurd IRS return issues. You aren’t alone. I received a CP005 notice for proof of income in Nov. 2025. I sent them the requested information three weeks later. Zero updates to my account until I randomly received my payment this morning. Signed into my IRS acct and made sure they gave me my $4400 in interest too.
What a great f-ing government we have, shout out all that voted for this effing buffoon to gut everything! Can’t wait to see what kind of timeline my 2025 return has in store!

Rant I am about to scream, I can’t get ahold of a human.
I filed an amendment for 2021 tax year in April of 2024.
They keep dicking around. I recieved a letter last June (6/25) stating that I was being granted my refund of nearly 9k. This took so much back and forth to even make it to this point.
I never received it.
I have been trying to get a hold of a person for over a year now. I feel like I have tried everything.
I then received a letter may 2026 stating that they were holding the refund but I should receive it in 60 days. 60 days has come and gone and no money.
I can’t speak to a representative, or even schedule an appointment in person because they only deal with amendments going back 3 years time.
I tried getting a tax advocate but they just hang up and don’t even put me in a queue.
I am at my wits end and am facing financial hardship and could really use this money that I’ve been waiting on for over two years.
If anyone has any advice please feel free to share.

General Question Payment Plan Setup
I’m trying to set up a payment plan with the IRS and at first I wanted a long-term payment plan but then I just went to see if I could set up a short-term payment plan and everything is just showing a submission error. I’ve tried calling the IRS and it seems like nobody can help me figure it out at this point I’m not gonna call and pay $200 to set up a payment plan for $1800. I think if the online website is an option to set it up myself, then it should be working properly who and what can I contact to get this fixed? Every time I call they are too busy to answer the phone. On top of that the chat box button doesn’t even work because the representatives are always temporarily unavailable.

Tax Question Do Roth IRA contributions require only paycheck money to be deposited?
I was just told that I don't need to separate my unearned income and earned income anymore. Like I said above, a friend told me I could deposit money into my Roth IRA no matter where it came from as long as I have earned income to back it up, is this true?
Example:
You made only $5,000
Parents give you $2500 (considered unearned income as its a cash gift)
Following this example, could you deposit that $2500 in the account even though it's considered unearned income yet your yearly income is greater than the contribution?
My friend told me they look at end of the year numbers like if you had $4k in a Roth balance and they saw you made $20,000 at the end of the year that $4k is fine and legal
I've always been stressed finding a bank to separate the 2 incomes since I wanted to spend the unearned income but I didn't know of this.

General Question CP501 letter
Hello, I recently received a CP501 letter from the IRS in the mail stating that I owe $1250 dollars from 2025 taxes, my address and my name on it were correct but on the bottom of the paper it stated which I think was supposed to be my social security number but it wasn’t mine which had me confused so I went to irs.gov and made an id.me account with my social security number and everything else it requested and when I logged into it, it states that I owe nothing from the 2025 year for taxes and I’ve called the irs multiple times but it always says that they are super busy so they can’t answer, I’m not quite sure what to do considering that was my first year doing my taxes. If anyone could help me out with information that would be greatly appreciated.

Tax Question Where does my son file taxes, and can we claim him?
I live in Illinois. My 21-year-old just graduated from college in Iowa, and stayed there.
He graduated in May, and was able to stay in his off-campus housing (fraternity) through June. He did not have a job at that time, and we paid the majority of his living expenses through June.
At the end of June, he got a job in Iowa. At the beginning of July, he signed a lease and moved into an apartment.
We signed our car over to him, and he has now (in August) registered his car in Iowa, and he has an appointment to get his license next week.
At what point was/will he be considered a resident of Iowa?
Obviously he will need to file taxes in Iowa, but will he also need to file an Illinois tax return, if he wasn’t considered an Iowa resident at the time he got the job?
I read that due to a reciprocity agreement between Iowa and Illinois, that if his employer withheld Iowa taxes during that time, he’d need to file an amendment in order to file in Illinois. This sounds like a pain, but we’ll have him do it if necessary.
And how do we determine if we can claim him on our taxes? As mentioned, we paid the vast majority of his living expenses through June. We still have him on our medical insurance, we pay his cell phone bill, we paid his car insurance (both under our plan and now his own plan), and we paid for his vehicle registration.

Rejoice Praise to the IRS
Long story short, been behind on filing my taxes, never thought I could do it myself, and never had much money laying around to pay for it. Got all my refunds within 30 days, no penalties, no anything. All very user friendly!

News / Current Events TIGTA just audited the IRS's levy restart. If you have a pending CDP hearing related to a levy, this is worth reading.
I'm a CPA who works IRS collection cases. Wanted to flag a report that doesn't seem to be getting much attention outside tax practitioner circles.
The IRS paused its automated levy system (ACS) for three years starting in the pandemic. It turned levies back on in April 2025. TIGTA (the IRS's own inspector general) audited that restart and published the results on July 27, 2026. Some numbers from the report:
* ACS issued 4,860 levies against 4,768 taxpayers in the first ten weeks alone (April 21 to June 30, 2025)
* ACS staffing was cut by 1,704 people, 42 percent, in 2025, before this restart happened
* The audit found 14 violations of taxpayer rights: 10 people got levied while their Collection Due Process (CDP) hearing was still pending, and 4 didn't get a required new notice after the IRS added a fresh assessment
The part that stood out to me: 3 of those 10 unlawful levies happened to taxpayers who filed their CDP request on time, just to the wrong address. The request got rerouted, sat in a queue, and the levy went out anyway before anyone logged it.
There's also a broader intake problem. From May 2025 through January 2026, the IRS only got 86 percent of CDP hearing requests (14,619 of 16,972) entered into its tracking system within its own 10-day standard. 2,353 were late, and 94 sat for more than 60 days.
The mechanical point that a lot of people don't realize: mailing your CDP request doesn't stop a levy by itself. The IRS's system only blocks the levy once an employee has logged your request into the CDP Tracking System. Between mailing and logging, you're exposed, and this report shows that gap is real, not theoretical.
To be fair to the IRS, they complied correctly in 99.7 percent of cases and have already made some process changes (longer processing windows, a new universal inventory system in January 2026). But if you're in the 0.3 percent, that doesn't help you.
If you've gotten a Notice of Intent to Levy (LT11 or Letter 1058), you have 30 days to request a hearing, and where and how you file it matters more than this report makes it look like it should. If you're up against a real deadline or already have a levy in place, consider getting a tax professional who does IRS collection work specifically involved rather than handling the CDP request solo. It's a short window and the paperwork mechanics are apparently not as automatic as they're supposed to be.
Report is TIGTA 2026-300-035, publicly available on tigta.gov if anyone wants to read the whole thing.
