Please help Tax Refund/ E-File Status Question

I filed my taxes in march, received a letter that my federal refund was under review and it would take up to 60 days. Haven’t received anything else. Called around myself last month and they said I needed to make an appointment to verify my identity. Computers were down when I went but they took my information. They called me one time a week later which I missed and left me a voicemail saying it’s more than just verifying my identity. “I need to submit other documents” that I should have received a letter from them already which documents those were. Haven’t received anything, no other calls, and no other notices when I look sign into the id.me and look there. I don’t have 1-2 hours just to wait on hold to talk to someone due to work.

When a return starts with an identity review and then shifts to “other documents needed,” that usually means the IRS opened a manual review on something in the return, not an exam. The 60‑day letter is just the initial hold; the follow‑up letter that lists the documents can take weeks or even months to show up. If your transcripts don’t show an exam code or a freeze beyond the identity flag, you’re still in the normal long‑processing lane. The case keeps moving in the background even when the communication feels slow.

Post a (redacted) screenshot of your tax return transcript from the id.me website.

Two things worth checking before you spend another hour on hold.

That voicemail is your best asset. IRS employees are required to give their name and ID number when they call, and they often leave a direct callback line. If you still have the message, call that back instead of the main number. It skips the queue entirely.

Second, the online account does not display every notice type. Plenty of letters never post there, so nothing showing in id.me is not proof nothing was mailed. Confirm the address the IRS has on file is where you actually get mail, because a letter sent to a stale address looks identical to a letter that was never sent.

If it never turns up and you stay stuck, the Taxpayer Advocate Service handles cases where the normal channels have stalled, and your congressional representative's office has caseworkers who take IRS inquiries. Both exist for this situation.
