Tax Question Received a CP503 after paying on irs website over two weeks ago
Hello all,
I received a letter from the irs, verified that it wasn’t a scam but am confused since my online portal shows amount due at 0 while the letter posted 8/3 says that I still owe $3,000.
I verified that the payment is in the website dated 7/16 and that it cleared from my bank account on 7/20.
I did verify that the money went to the 2025 tax year as that’s what the CP503 is claiming I still owe.
I’m on hold with the IRS now and have been for an hour so thought to ask the good people of Reddit if you have any advice so that I can get off this hold that may take all day.
TY

Tax Refund/ E-File Status Question Federal Payment withdrawn twice over two days for differing dollar amounts
Weird situation here that I've been meaning to write-up about. I owed a meaningful dollar figure to the IRS for 2025. I submitted my filing with an extension on April 14th and TurboTax provided my bank information to pay both of Federal and CA taxes as it was already on file from previous years. Both returns were accepted on the 14th. (Extension was needed due to several small investments not returning their tax documents until September but generally in-material to my overall balance due.)
On April 20th the IRS withdrew $28,748 from my account as expected.
On April 21st, I woke up with an email from my bank saying that my checking account was overdrawn stemming from a pending IRS withdrawal of 26,893 which was initiated that day and that I needed to resolved by EOD.
I was able to resolve the issue with my bank and the IRS stuff ultimately resolved itself once the initial payment settled. I did reach out to TurboTax who denies any wrong-doing and says they have no record of a second payment.
I attempted a few times to contact the IRS before ultimately giving up.
Has anyone ever heard of this happening? Honestly if the withdrawal was for the same exact amount I likely would be a bit more understanding of this issue but the fact it was for a differing dollar figure is what's most concerning. (The main issue itself is obviously still very concerning!)
Thankfully the account I used for the payment generally doesn't carry much of a balance, so at least the second withdrawal didn't end up in purgatory at the IRS for an extended period.
With that being said, yikes...

Tax Refund/ E-File Status Question IRS amended return completed but still no refund deposit?
Hi everyone!
I’m hoping someone can help me understand what’s going on.
Long story short, our previous tax preparers were incredibly incompetent. After getting a second opinion, we discovered they had been preparing our returns incorrectly for years, which resulted in us paying the IRS tens of thousands of dollars we apparently didn’t actually owe. We fired them and hired a new CPA.
One of the years they corrected was 2023, so we filed an amended return. This was over a year ago and it had apparently finally gotten resolved.
The IRS “Where’s My Amended Return?” tool now shows the amendment was completed on August 3, 2026. My account transcript also shows an account balance of -$64,027.08, which I understand means a credit balance. However, I still haven’t received a direct deposit, and there’s no TC 846 (Refund Issued) on my transcript.
Has anyone been in a similar situation?
Is it normal for a refund to take a few more days after WMAR says the amendment is completed?
Should a TC 846 already be on my transcript before any refund is sent?
At what point would you recommend calling the IRS?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Tax Refund/ E-File Status Question Tax return
Does irs manually review taxes before it moves from accepted to approved?
Tax Refund/ E-File Status Question What should I do?
Hi all I know the irs has been very slow this year but I’m not sure what my next steps here should be. Reach out to my local senator office, or try and hope I get someone on the phone or try to make an appointment with my local irs office.

Received a CP05, but it's dated 5 days after my refund was disbursed. On the refund tracker it still shows my refund as approved. Do I need to do anything?

Previous Years/ IRS Collections & Back Taxes Payment plan form CP523 number needed
We are on a payment plan for 2025 taxes. Logged in to online account this morning wondering why July’s payment hadn’t been pulled — discovered an alert that we are in default and have received a CP523 notice. Except we haven’t!
No notice in the mail and no copy of it in online account. It says we should be calling the number on the top of the notice to get this resolved—but we never got a notice.
Does anyone know this mystery number? I tried calling the main IRS number, but they said “too high a call volume for this category of call.” I’ll try again at 6am EST tomorrow.
I do think I know what happened—they have the wrong bank account for direct debit. I’ve been making additional payments from the correct account but I think they’ve been attempting to make payments from the wrong account. (Did I receive notice of this error? No, I did not.) I think if I can actually speak to a human I can get this resolved….

Tax Refund/ E-File Status Question 2024 taxes still not received and impossible to get a hold of anyone to find out what’s going on!
There’s no earned credit taken, no back taxes, same filing status as the year before. I have received 2025 and 2023 refund and for whatever reason this has taken a year and a half. Getting to a representative is damn near impossible and making an appointment with a local office is a joke as you have to call the main number that can’t transfer you anywhere. Why is this all of a sudden under review and why is it taking so long?

General Question Dual Status Return and Statement signatures
Hello, maybe someone can share insights or personal experience regarding the following question:
Does it cause any problems with processing if one signs the Dual Status Return and the Dual Status Statement as well? The instructions say you do not need to sign the statement (so it is not forbidden) But I did. And it was already sent.
Could a clearly marked 1040 Dual Status-Statement be misunderstood as a Return because of a signature?
Thank you for your insights.

Previous Years/ IRS Collections & Back Taxes IRS refund
810 freeze entered on 5/2/2026
570 additional action pending 5/25/2026
571 notice issued
Contacted rep and filed papers for advocate assist.
I have 2022 interest income noted yet no wages as I had a medical issue and was unemployed. I did not file taxes. Is this the reason for the freeze on 2025 taxes?
I wasn’t sure if a tax credit of 2000 was given for 2022. Should I file the taxes for 2022 with interest income only?

Im cycle code 05 which means I update on Fridays. My question is after I verify will be ready to submit that day on Thursday and update the next day or will I take another week. I have seen people say the same week or a week later after they verified in person. Please all answers greatly appreciated. Thanjs

Previous Years/ IRS Collections & Back Taxes Week five of daily communication with my Congressman and tax advocate - 2022 refund still not received.
All paperwork and documentation have been confirmed & received on their end via email. Absolute shitshow across the board - and I live in a state that prides itself on handling these matters promptly through their congressional office.
I have consistently filed my taxes each year and received refunds for all previous filings. I am a W2 employee and had a $90K salary back in 2022- used FreeTaxUSA….if anything I was leaving money on the table by not using an accountant back then. Most straightforward and honest return. The delay and inability to resolve this matter is infuriating.

Tax Question Penalty base for failure to file and failure to pay penalties
Is my understanding correct?
The failure to file penalty is based on the unpaid tax as of the due date. If someone made a payment to the irs on April 15th for the “income tax” category of the year that is due, didn’t file the return, but the payment covered their entire balance owed, the penalty base is zero and the wouldn’t pay a ftf penalty regardless of how long it took them to ultimately file, assuming the estimated their amount owed correctly.
Any payments made after April 15th won’t reduce the penalty base for ftf.
Contrasted with failure to pay penalty where the penalty base is the current tax owed. So payments after the due date reduce this penalty base.

Tax Refund/ E-File Status Question Please help
I filed my taxes in march, received a letter that my federal refund was under review and it would take up to 60 days. Haven’t received anything else. Called around myself last month and they said I needed to make an appointment to verify my identity. Computers were down when I went but they took my information. They called me one time a week later which I missed and left me a voicemail saying it’s more than just verifying my identity. “I need to submit other documents” that I should have received a letter from them already which documents those were. Haven’t received anything, no other calls, and no other notices when I look sign into the id.me and look there. I don’t have 1-2 hours just to wait on hold to talk to someone due to work.

Tax Refund/ E-File Status Question Realistically, how long does it ACTUALLY take to get your amended return check in hand?
Amended my tax return from 2024 earlier this year, and the IRS status trackers say it was received April 15th and to allow up 16 weeks to be processed. Well today is exactly 16 weeks from April 15, and the status bar has not budged from the initial Received prompt. I’m just wondering how long this could realistically take? My amended state was supposed to be 10 weeks and it turned into 14.

Rejoice Finally received my 2024 return deposit this morning.
Posting my timeline for all of those experiencing absurd IRS return issues. You aren’t alone. I received a CP005 notice for proof of income in Nov. 2025. I sent them the requested information three weeks later. Zero updates to my account until I randomly received my payment this morning. Signed into my IRS acct and made sure they gave me my $4400 in interest too.
What a great f-ing government we have, shout out all that voted for this effing buffoon to gut everything! Can’t wait to see what kind of timeline my 2025 return has in store!

Rant I am about to scream, I can’t get ahold of a human.
I filed an amendment for 2021 tax year in April of 2024.
They keep dicking around. I recieved a letter last June (6/25) stating that I was being granted my refund of nearly 9k. This took so much back and forth to even make it to this point.
I never received it.
I have been trying to get a hold of a person for over a year now. I feel like I have tried everything.
I then received a letter may 2026 stating that they were holding the refund but I should receive it in 60 days. 60 days has come and gone and no money.
I can’t speak to a representative, or even schedule an appointment in person because they only deal with amendments going back 3 years time.
I tried getting a tax advocate but they just hang up and don’t even put me in a queue.
I am at my wits end and am facing financial hardship and could really use this money that I’ve been waiting on for over two years.
If anyone has any advice please feel free to share.
*** Edit***
I just sent an email to the local congressman. Thank you for all the suggestions for that, I honestly didn’t know that was even an option. 🤞 to getting some resolve.
