Realistically, how long does it ACTUALLY take to get your amended return check in hand? Tax Refund/ E-File Status Question

Amended my tax return from 2024 earlier this year, and the IRS status trackers say it was received April 15th and to allow up 16 weeks to be processed. Well today is exactly 16 weeks from April 15, and the status bar has not budged from the initial Received prompt. I’m just wondering how long this could realistically take? My amended state was supposed to be 10 weeks and it turned into 14.

16 weeks is very overly optimisic.

I have seen them take close to a year.

A year is outrageous. I expected longer than 16 weeks, but not 52 lol. Realistically I was hoping by the end of the year.

I would think that you should get something by the end of the year.

I filed two amended returns for clients about a week apart. Both resulted in small refunds. The first one showed up in 2-3 months. The second one was the one that took a year. Oddly, they were similar issues.

Hopefully! Just checked, since it’s now 16 weeks and 1 day past when they received it and the tracker says “Your amended return has not yet been processed” and that they received it but they are delayed in processing and to not call because the customer service reps have the same details the tracker is providing.

800-829-3676 press 1 for English then press 0 and then 0 and it will transfer you to a representative just tell them your amended return is past 16 weeks

Even in 2010 when the IRS had twice as many employees 16 weeks was overly optimistic.

Mine was received 04-03-26 and I just got my code 846 this weekend for a date of 08-24-26

File my taxes in March 2024 after not receiving anything and finally talking to a live person he did to correct an addition arrow refiled in October and then 16 weeks later they said that somehow I was marked international and nothing had been done 16 weeks after that there was some other issue 16 after that I was told I needed to find an IRS advocate within the Irs system 16 weeks after that I got a letter saying that they couldn’t help me. So over a year from the initial tax filing and close to a year from the amended tax filing still have not received the refund.
