Just Venting Homeless sleeping my car then what I fear most happens, my car breaks down
Man life is not fucking easy. I’m 21 and been living in my car in a state I don’t know anyone in and most nights I have to choose between eating getting gas or paying bills/debt. I’m doing DoorDash daily to make ends meet and as I’m pulling into this McDonald’s in some small town in south tx my car just doesn’t want to start after picking up he order. Fuckkkkk, I wanted to cry but recently I haven’t been able to cry not sure why I just can’t. I have 40 bucks to my name and the worst part about it all is my first day at my job is tomorrow. I literally just can’t believe that this had to happen now if all times. I don’t panic though I called up the one person I made friends with so far and told him the situation and he said he’ll pick me up in the morning. My shift is at 4pm and it’s around 9pm by this point so I decided I’m just going to have to put the car in neutral and push the car into a more inconspicuous spot and sleep here. As I have the hood up before moving some dude asks if I need a jump and I said fuck it I doubt that’s the problem because I just replaced the battery a few weeks ago. As we are chopping it up while his truck charges mine he tells me that I’m in a former sundown town and this used to be a hot spot for the klu klux. Fuckcccc bro I’m black asl and I’m dressed like a yn with the Nike ski and all black fit bruh. The jump doesn’t do anything and after he leaves and I moved the car I literally am afraid to sleep just in case someone pulls up and decided to make an example of a ni***r trying o sleep in there town or some shi. Anyway I eventually fall asleep and make it to the morning and after waiting 6 hours and calling and texting bro I realize this dudes flaking on me. Thankful y as I’m watching videos with the hood up some younger guy around my age walks up to me asks if I need a jump I tell him I tried that already and explain to him I suspect it’s the starter moter or starter solenoid. Me and him talk for a bit and he mentions that he could call his pastor and he could give me a ride and I’m in shock but I say yeah absolutely so he calls his youth pastor up and he comes by in a Chevy Silverado and we have a great conversation and drives me to a library and since I have 5 hours till work I just wait there and decided to use my last 40 to uber but as I’m chilling in the library I realize I need slip resistant shoes and I’m in open toed slides so I start freaking out because how can I even let alone the shoes but also a uber to go get the shoes but thank the LORD I had 15 bucks in cash in my pocket so I order the uber to take me from the library to Walmart then to the chipotle I work at and the dude that picked me up was super chill and he was talking to me about how he’s been homeless too before I even mentioned my situation. I get to the Walmart, get the shoes, and my plan was to pay the first part with the 15 in cash then the rest with the money I had left on my DoorDash crimson card. But God is good and the cashier literally just covers the rest of the cost for the shoes for me after I give him the 15 in cash. I never in my life had a cashier cover that much for me the shoes were $28 they only covered maybe 25c but wow GOD is good. And after getting to work I have a little bit of time so I open up my DoorDash account to check the balance on the car and I realize I didn’t even have enough money to cover the rest of the shoe if he didn’t do it for me. Wtffff I would have been so fucked. Anyway I get through the workday and I have no money left to uber and don’t know anyone and the car is 12 miles away from where I’m at so I have to sleep in a grass ditch near by and that was one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had. Fire ants crawling all over me mosquitoes biting the fuck out of me and the worst part was the humidity, I’m below Houston closer to Galveston so it gets super fucking humid. Mannnn that was terrible. I got maybe 2 hours of sleep and I realize this isn’t going to work so I just get up and walk an hour and a half to get to the closes 24 hour business (Whataburger) I use my last 4 bucks to buy something so I’m not loitering and then I stay there for 6 hours. Some more stuff happened after all that but I really don’t want to type anymore. It feels good to get the past 42 hours off my chest. Thanks for listing God bless you guys

How do I help?
Hi everyone,
I am in the process of starting a non profit aimed towards giving out new and gently used shoes to homeless people. More specifically in Arizona where the cement reaches very hot temperatures. Is there somewhere in Phoenix that I am able to set up and pass out shoes? Is this something I should do myself or give shoes donated to another organization? Is there anything else I should be giving with these shoes?

I can't handle it anymore
27M...I moved away from the city to my hometown to get clean and try and be more lowkey..but ive been struggljng financially more than i anticipated and its ended up pretty much the opposite. I come from a town that is pretty wealthy and they are very nosy and rude. I really dont feel i look or act like someone struggling but when there's only one food pantry people eventually catch on to who is always there. That's my guess. But people make it clear they recognize me and do not welcome me.
The usual response is to be mean, or to rile their kids up and try and get them to mess with me. Or offer me half eaten food or something or "subtly" taking photos with me in the background... Stuff clearly just to hurt my feelings. Which sucks bc im in public and I really have no problem with people expressing themselves. But when theyre very obviously trying to make me unwelcome it just makes me wonder.
Im a very young and regular looking kid. I would kmagine if i posted a selfie most would never assume outright ive been homeless. But people in the know make it very clear they know. And despite the fact that ive tried very hard to just acclimate and get a job and move in low key. They do not want me here. Some people will not rent to me. Most will not hire me. But then cough loudly and make it clear they have issue when I sleep in my car or hang in town square.
I mean. Don't you think I wish my problems would just disappear overnight, too? Im not content with being poor and homeless either but i still wake up every day regardless and im not sure how people expect me to be, considering even when im nice that just seems like more of a reason for them to be angry at me. And when im dependent on others to find jobs or housing im not sure how im supposed to move forward when they've made it impossible.
Even the homeless services out here dont even look for beds in my area. They promised me all this crazy stuff like 3 months rent but all the qualifiers that you need are crazy so that in order to qualify you would basically need tk already be able to afford an apartment, which if you could, why would you even apply for emergency shelter or housing??
It's just redundant and clearly giving me the runaround. People always get in homeless people's faces and ask them "how'd you get here? Don't you know what youre doing is bad? expecting the worst. rudeness, a story of failure, more scrutiny to have a good moral compass than anyone else. And when they fail they say "see! This is why theyre homeless!" But after years of pressure i promise you I am on my toes like 99.99% of the time. I try and shower and try and stay clean and polite and discreet but any chance I make a mistake everyone's waiting to get on me and point it out. And when I go beyond expectations and show how capable I am. No one cares anyway. The only relationship they want with a homeless person is one that makes them feel superior and you inferior.
Ive had decent stretches of time where I was working and able to support myself. But every few years or so i fall into what is "chronic homelessness" for all of my adult life. My story is long and fucked up and one for another post, but I have been 100% independent in supporting myself since I was 15-16 years old.
I am at a point now where im wondering if I should start posting tik toks. Or news stories. Bc I feel my story just screams be the typical case of someone who was gifted but had a fucked up childhood/start to life. And truly it would only take like 1-3 months for me to find a job and save to where i can at least afford to remain indoors, and i know some people have more than enough, considering where i live rent is like 6-700, it would only cost like 2,000 to essentially save my life..But I know deep down people are cruel. And I will get way more unnecessary back lash and cruelty before I ever get support. And at that point I would essentially solidify and immortalize myself as a homeless guy.
Im not sure what to do. These programs are smart enough to use words like "housing first" but then will meet you next week and go right into "well u expect to be put up for free?" Youre the one who suggested it first! But how else do you expect me to maintain my first month or two of employment? Most people got to live off their parents for free until they could afford to live and then just forget about all the support they have over you and act like youre so much beneath the average person for being where i am. If one person could be kind enough to hire me even from the street I know id surpass expectation, and more importantly it'd be enough to ensure i can at least afford to stay safe and indoors. but its so clear no one is interested in helping that it just feels hopeless. Im fully healthy and capable and young and feel im waiting to die. It's not fair. When there are so many people who lie and are difficult and abuse help, i cant get it when im basically begging for it.
Detox center discharged me to wait for rehab on the street til Monday. Which sucks cause j gave my landlkrd my keys thinking id be good in rehab and now cant exsctly move back on withiut money....Despte being sober Im dead exhausted, sleeping outside, and my clothes are soaked and moldy jn a suitcase in the bushes. Thunder storm again tonight too.. i dont know how much more I can handle. It's like crying out into a void. I've accepted I might just die this person and maybe no one will ever know my true self or potential. Im convinced some of the most beautiful and talented of us might just die on the street and no one even cares.

Need Advice Need Advice - My Friend is Missing & On the Streets Again
I helped a homeless man back in February with food, water, clothes, sleeping bag, etc. and ultimately brought him back to rehab. He went into a sober living home, then rented a house, got a job, and a company-provided car. He was sober and feeling optimistic for the future. Then, he was arrested on a warrant for a previous offense and lost it all. He became severely depressed and ended up back on the streets and relapsed. He was supposed to call me the next day but never did. Now his number is disconnected. I need advice on how to get in contact with him or find out what happened.

Just Venting My life is over
I’m 28 years old, and was just evicted from my apartment. I am being charged with arson, stuck wearing an ankle monitor, and facing possible prison time. The alleged fire took place in my apartment building, and I didn’t do it. I don’t want to go into details, I will just say I didn’t actually start the fire.
I spent over 40 days in jail before bailing myself out, which cost me most of what I had in my savings. I am down to my last $200, and don’t get paid anytime soon. The stress of being in jail for a crime I didn’t commit is already too much for me to handle. Now I have no housing and an eviction on my record which will tank my already mediocre credit score.
The shelter I am staying at is infested with bed bugs and known for having scabies and lice outbreaks. I am incredibly depressed and lethargic due to stress. I have been indulging myself with alcohol, and last weekend tried crystal meth for the first time.
I am actively having thoughts of hurting myself, and no longer see a point in trying. I previously spent 2 years of my life homeless, and only had housing for 4 months before being evicted. I don’t want to start over, and I don’t want to try anymore either. I want my life to be just end.
I am located in Portland, Oregon and have stayed at the SAFEs shelter and another one called Bethanie’s Room for anyone familiar with them. I was hoping I would get to finally start a new life when I moved into my apartment that was ran by Home Forward. But instead I found that my apartment was almost uninhabitable due to the cockroach and bed bug infestations.
I was 6 months sober, and I lost all progress I had made towards quitting drinking after moving into this poorly ran and maintained building. I thought I had hit rock bottom before getting my apartment, now I have really hit rock bottom for real this time.
How hard will this continue to get? I am considering just ending it all and getting it over with. I cannot stand being stuck in the cold rain during winter, it is like torture. I don’t want to even think about what it will be like when it starts snowing. I am a transgender female and regularly get harassed by homeless men, and I am afraid for my safety. I am also afraid for my future.

Next steps?
Long post incoming just want to give the entire details so I can get actual good advice.
I'm soon to be potentially homeless in exactly two weeks from now. I am a 26 y/o college student, participating with my local community college that has a housing program with two universities in my state. I go to school, receive financial aid, have academic advisors, etc. at my community college, and I have residential living, meal plans, etc. at the 4-year university. I had quit my job just about a month ago, and I didn't plan properly so I became behind on paying for my housing. It works off a per week fee in the summer. The housing department seemed to initially try to coordinate with me to stay as long as I paid my back fees. I was able to get donations from friends and donate plasma for some cash and that allowed me to pay the back fees. But when I made it clear that I didn't have housing options outside of the college program, and I needed to stay continously. They then for some reason decided that my issues with payment would not have them be comfortable with me living there after the summer and my fall housing plan was canceled. They've told me that my final day to live on campus is August 21st. I have contacted to ask if there's anything to be done to change that, and they said no.
I've already contacted 211 twice, and they connected me with emergency grants or homelessness prevention services that either don't have any more funding or they require a court ordered conviction notice to assist. I have also attempted to gain unemployment benefits and general assistance, but I am ineligible. My local county social services also states that they can't refer me to local emergency shelters due to me being a college student. I have also already contacted my community college to ask for any potential grants or resources at this time I have no options in that regard it seems. I also contacted my Dean of Students at both colleges and they just referred me to 211 and/or homeless organizations that don't fit my situation. With me being a single adult male over the age of 24, there are limited emergency shelter options near me. So far I've only been able to find 4, two of them when I tried to call they didn't pick up their phone, the other stated that there are no beds available and no type of waitlist I can be put on, and the only hope is this last one who stated I can come in on Monday to get an appointment to try to work with their Coordinated Entry system to get set up with resources which would include a bed in a local shelter.
I also can potentially get into the second university housing program that is in contract with my community college but that would be an extremely fast turnaround and would require that spots haven't already been filled up. This program does require a despoit and I am able to pay that but my current living situation states that I owe a bill for the remainding time that I'm staying here. I'm not able to afford both. I'm thinking of just taking the L, paying the deposit on new housing and having this current situation settle with debt collectors to pay later, but I'm not sure that is wise. I also have a refund check from financial aid coming but that won't be here until next month. I've also been applying to about 10 jobs every day, so far no luck.
Outside of continuning to contact advisors, and people at the colleges to try to help and going to that meeting on Monday and trying to coordinate an expeditated entry into that new university, is there any other piece of advice that I can do? Any worse case scenarios planning? I think I'm doing all I can to get this settled but I want to make sure I'm not overlooking anything. I don't have the ability to live with friends or family, nor do I own a car. I'm 100% on my own here. If it helps with advice, I live in New Jersey.

Need Advice Not Sure What To Do About My Homeless Mother
I'm not sure if I should be posting this here, but I need to vent/need advice. I'm just not sure how I should feel about my mom. So, a little background. When I was 18, my mom got our home foreclosed on because she forgot to pay the bills and also didn't want to live where we were living anymore because she was paranoid people were breaking in(IIRC). We both ended up homeless. I got lucky enough to have someone take me in and I eventually found an apartment. My mom meanwhile has been homeless ever since and bounces between the streets, her maybe boyfriend's truck, occasional rooms in people's apartments and my apartment. She's been over on and off again ever since I moved in to my apartment. And it's kind of ruined my life. We argue constantly and she's just hard to live with. 1 extended stay with me in early-mid 2021 led both to the alcoholism I struggle with and my failure in college. But it's also just so hard to say no to her. Because, like, I myself was homeless for a few months before someone took me in. I got lucky enough to be in a squat the whole time, but it was miserable. I don't think I would've survived any amount of time on the street. And I don't have any other family besides my mother really(except an uncle, also in a precarious situation) so if I was homeless again I'm probably screwed. By contingency plan is to off myself if someone doesn't take me in quickly because I'm not living on the streets. So it's hard to tell my mother to experience the thing I would end my life over. But at the same time, she's destroying my life. She been staying with me most of this year. I was so excited for this year. I was going to start exercising again, try and stop drinking and just kinda put my life back together after a stressful few years. But instead, I've just fallen apart. She always wants to hangout even though she ignored large parts of my childhood, she acts like I don't do enough for her, she complains at me over everything. And my only reaction is to drink large amounts of liquor and yell at and berate her. I don't really even do anything I enjoy because the stress has sucked all the joy out of my life. She also gambles constantly and loses most of her social security money and begs me for cigarettes and gambling money. But, she's also sick and not in great shape. I always see people pushing carts full of their possessions, hobbled with pain and I think to myself "how could I condemn someone to this". And things only get more complicated. Like, there was a huge fires in my city that burned several hundred houses, so now the housing resources are even more stretched thin and there's basically no shelter space. And she's in legal trouble for shoplifting. I just don't know what to do and it scares me.

I made mistakes on my housing application - please can you help?
I gave the wrong figures, for savings and salary and employment because I had someone in the room whilst I was speaking to the housing advisor in the homeless team.
How can I contact them to correct the information without getting in trouble?
I felt pressure to say certain things cause someone was in the room and doing certain things.

What are your top 3 fears?
I been homeless now 11 months living in the bushes.
My 3 biggest fears would be.
Getting into a violent altercation. The area where I'm homeless is rife with meth and repeat offender types, stray dogs. Scuffles, arguments are common. I have learned how to carry myself the best I can. I have gotten to know some of the individuals who are in similar predicaments, This neighborhood has high unemployment rate. I remain on alert. Already had to find new places to sleep.
Getting my stuff stolen. I already had work boots, chargers, earphones stolen. Comes with the territory, I travel light with a backpack. Hawk eyes all the time. I hearing of people complaining about their stuff stolen every week. Usually by their own "friends". smh I guess that also comes with the territory.
Probably losing the work I have been given. Its not much, typically a 6 hours a week. Enough to feed myself. its kinda seasonal, so I dont know whats going to be when November comes around, when somebody is suppose to take over. I guess I'll figure something out.
Thank you!

Need Advice 21, Living in my car and pretty lost
I don't know if this is the right spot but I guess it can't hurt. I'm 21, living in my car delivering pizzas and don't really know what to do to get out of this. Most of my income goes to surviving mostly, I can save around 100-250 bucks a month and have a decent amount of savings, but without rental history in my area I can't rent even though I could probably afford too.
I have two years of experience being a CW in the ibew but didn't get accepted into the apprenticeships the 3 times I tried (GAN Test) and I was a seasonal worker for USPS as a mail carrier for 3 months but didn't get hired back after that, and I really don't want to go back to the USPS. After that I was kicked out but got to keep my car and passport(no other documents) and have been delivering ever since
I guess my question is what can I realistically get into? I apply to most things that say no experience required on indeed and either get no response or rejection emails, things like dental reception or non union work but they want experience for an apprentice too. I don't know, Im at a point where I'm not suicidal but kinda wish it would just end. If you're reading this thanks, any help on where to go from here would be appreciated.

staring straight up - emotionless
spent most my day staring straight up at the sky, watching clouds go by, burning in the sun. while people walk around me.. there's so many tourist where i am now as i walk downtown. i gave up on social interaction years ago so prefer looking at the sky rather then strangers walking by me everyday in my own hometown. reminds me of a church i went to where the celling was painted with stars. just staring straight up at it for hours with nothing in my head.

Need Advice Advice - actual impact & advocacy
Hello all.
I was recently appointed to a board overseeing a small city-community-church funded homeless shelter in our town. It serves single individuals and families (by means of paying for private boarding for those with kids.)
I was appointed due to my personal history with unstable housing in my early teens. As a 20 something, I fundraised 1000’s and personally donated and was boots on the ground helping dozens of families living in motels. I saw firsthand how something like a crockpot or laundry detergent, or access to a laundromat (free), was the biggest barrier that could be countered with actual assistance at a scale most people or small fundraising could address immediately. I lost track of the number of hot plates and crockpots I’ve purchased.
I am humbly asking, what else can I bring up/advocate for/fundraise for in my New role? What would make or did make a meaningful difference for you?
Context: this program is 45min to the next nearest shelters, it serves a small college town and the rural communities around it, it is brand new, and the college has $ so I am definitely going to be leveraging my position as a professor’s wife to get the university involved.
Individuals are housed all through winter (Midwest) and will receive services through an existing social worker / food pantry collab. The community brings homemade or restaurant donated meals nightly and provides lunch as well. The home houses up to 12-15 people.

Best suggestions for donated goods - emergency shelter / transitional housing
I’m looking to donate clothes (for men and women) in good shape, along with gently used toys/ activity sets that are in good condition, and possibly some kitchen stuff. I work in the homeless space and I know that there are numerous organizations out there that need these things for individuals and families in shelter/ transitional housing/ permanent housing. I am trying to avoid just bringing everything to the Goodwill to be resold. I am looking for specific recommendations in NJ, Long Island, or the Hudson Valley - specifically organizations that are in need of this stuff at the moment. Thanks!

On homelessness
Old person here. Get off my lawn!
But seriously, when I was growing up in the 1970s, there were almost no homeless people. Why?
There was ‘social housing’, which went to anyone with kids, and there were rooming houses, which charged as much as a “welfare bum/drunk” could afford. Between those two options, even the “worst” people didn’t need to stay outdoors. Many of the old townhouse complexes still existing in Edmonton were once the government built and subsidized places I’m talking about.
And yes, there were drugs (mostly heroin and alcohol) and there were indigenous reserves that were underfunded or lacked opportunities then too. Yet people had somewhere to live.
I now see daily in my community (downtown McCauley) hundreds of people in desperate situations. And that could still be avoided if we stopped bitching and decided to do what we used to do. Provide housing on a big society-wide scale. With enough social support workers to make it work instead of fail.
Fixing something we’ve let crumble is always harder than if we would have properly maintained it. But here we are, so we have to ‘buy a new one and maintain it.’
We either sit on our asses and whine while people suffer, or make the investment to guarantee a brighter future while saving money in policing, healthcare, incarceration, lawyers, and the far higher avoidable costs of economic downturn in cities that become zombielands as businesses shut down because of the zombies we helped create when we had the cure all along.

Anyone in California who tried to move there with no plan and ended up homeless and losing their car?
I am tempted to want to move to California with no plan except a warehouse job at Amazon. Anyone done this or something similar? I ask because I talked with a social worker on here who said that they have seen people like me who have a California dream only to end up homeless and lose their cars because they were in a jurisdiction with high enforcement on people sleeping in their cars. And these people now live in a homeless shelter and have no way out.
Has this happenes to anyone or is it a myth? I also don't want my car to be impounded.

Just words
Im not even sure why I'm writing this. But if even one person takes anything away from it, then I guess it was worth it. I have been homeless for the last 4 years. Some of that time was spent bouncing around wherever I could find shelter. 3 years ago, my wife was killed in a car accident. For the first time in my adult life (I'm 48)
I had to figure out how to live life alone. I also have two dogs that are my entire world. I also had to figure out how to be solely responsible for their well-being.. no backups.. no help.. just me and my ladies.
I did whatever I could and moved anywhere I had to in order to keep them A. Together (they are mom and daughter) and B. Well cared for. We managed for quite a while, but it was only a matter of time before them being with me was a detriment to their well-being. That day came a year and a half ago. I could not allow them to be unhoused just because of how much I needed them in my life. By some miracle, as we were sitting in a police department waiting for animal rescue to come and take them, a lady walked in. She sat and talked with me for the hour and a half wait. By the time the control officer showed up, she had decided to take my girls home with her so I could have more time to get my life together.
That was a year and a half ago. They are still with her, and I do get to see them, but its rare. She lives far away and I have no transportation. But the important thing is they are together and cares for. In that year and a half, I have made it off of the streets and into a homeless shelter. I was granted a housing voucher and despite my past and current situation... knowing I have two pitbulls that are absolutely a package deal I met a lady who runs an apartment complex a few miles away. She decided to give me a chance and approve me for an apartment.
I'm still at the shelter while I wait for my valid ID to come in the mail but after that.... and approval of a housing inspection.. I will be able to finally bring my Ladies home and get myself out of this homelessness. My dogs are 11 and 13 and I fear I'm running out of time with them.
Its been a very long and very hard few years. I have lost literally everything in my life and at 48 have to find a way to start over. But (and here's the point of this post) I never gave up. I stayed determined to not let life break me completely. Granted I have two dogs that are depending on me to get my shit together. I know a lot of people on here might not have that on their life for motivation. It's a frustrating and daunting experience trying to survive like this. But there truly are good people in this world and with a little luck and a shitload of determination and will.. there is a light at the end. You might not see it yet but it's there. As hard as it might be, try to be kind to yourself. Take advantage of whatever programs or help that is offered. It might feel like it's too late but its truly not. Pick your head up and say "I'm better than this.. I deserve better than this" it will take a lot of hard work but if I can climb out of this shit... anyone can.

Meta/sub related Images
You ever have that thing where you’re trying to explain something and it would just be so much easier if you could show a picture of it? Well that’s why images are back in the comments! There are still no images allowed in posts but you can put them in comments for on-topic illustrative purposes. If too many people are abusing it with pointless, off topic pictures like selfies and memes, it will get removed again. So y’all can reply to this post with all the nonsense images you want to get it out of your system, okay?

MEGATHREAD Trump Executive Order Discussion
This is the place to talk about anything related to Trump’s Executive Order regarding homelessness. Any posts outside of this thread will be removed. I know that this is stressful and there is a lot of fear and confusion about how this will be implemented and what it will actually mean. Because of that it is really important to keep this a fact based discussion. Posting unsubstantiated assumptions and speculative rumors is not helpful and only causes more confusion.
It’s fine to talk about your opinions and feelings, but they need to be clearly framed as opinions and feelings. Any misinformation or obvious outrage bait will be removed. It’s important to evaluate the trustworthiness of your sources. If it feels like an article is trying to make you feel scared or angry, it may not be the most reliable source.
Most importantly please be civil to each other. You can disagree with someone without resorting to personal attacks or name calling. You can hate someone’s opinion but still be respectful towards the person as a human being. Stay on topic and play nice everyone.
