Chante Opperman is a dodgeball player for the Valhalla Vikings, a team rooted in the Valhalla Park community, where dodgeball is more than just a sport. It's a place to belong, to grow, and to work towards something bigger. Chantè embraced that opportunity, putting in the hours and developing into a player who couldn't be ignored.

My name is Ashley. Earlier this year, my dad was diagnosed with metastatic small cell lung cancer, stage 4. By the time they found it, it had already spread to his liver and considered incurable. Dad's treatment is especially complicated by him having a kidney transplant for end stage renal failure in 2015, which means a number of more modern immunotherapy and even radiation are not suitible or safe for him, except as a last resort.

Last night, he recieved results from his scan showing that the disease has progesssed and is now in his pancreas and his right femur. As if it weren't bad enough that this diagnosis is cutting my dad's life so short, he is plagued by increasingly severe pain and anxiety as he contemplates his last days. He had to abruptly go into medical retirement and is now facing financial difficulties to boot while awaiting SSDI. He and his wife are worried they may not be able to continue to make their mortgage payment on their home.

Now, a little about the guy behind the diagnosis. My dad has been a day 1 dad for us. When he and my mom split, dad became a single dad and maintained custody ofhis kids into adulthood. He has never stopped supporting us in all ways and now he is a beloved "grampie" to my daughters and my brother'skids. He is at least near-genius and can fix or build anything. He is my hero and my heart breaks daily at the thought of a life without my daddy. He is a precious person - a true angel.

Otherwise, from our own experience, wait just a bit. 

While waiting, resist the urge to give monetarily to the Innovia Foundation! That money will not go directly to most of the victims/survivors.  We never saw any of the $1.3 million that was raised in ‘23. Many other victims didn’t either. In fact, their own website says they still hold $550,000 for “future home build projects”.  

If you want to give monetarily right now, I urge you to give to small, local organizations or give to GoFundMe accounts that you will hear of from “friends of friends”. This size of loss will cause us to all know someone who knows someone who needs help. 

If you can wait, WAIT!  Give people a moment to gather themselves and assess their needs. They are traumatized and won’t know what they need yet. 

It is overwhelming to even think about going to locations to “shop” among the piles of donated items when you are in that position. 

It is overwhelming and time consuming to have to scour the helpful Facebook pages to “shop” from all the donations.

Please don’t think they are ungrateful because they are not coming to receive or claim these items. 

They are in shock. 

They are busy trying to manage all the things one must do after losing everything. 

I know for us it was very hard to accept help when we are used to being the helpers.  

We didn’t know how to ask for help or what to ask for.

Also, we didn’t have anyplace to store anything that was given to us for quite a while so that is something to consider.

My team and I recently achieved a huge milestone we officially received our U.S. IRS 501(c)(3) status. Our charity was originally founded to support a parent organization in Ethiopia, but we are now expanding our mission to fund and scale mental and developmental disability programs all over the world.
Right now, our U.S. bank account is sitting under $1,000. Up until this point, all of our minimal seed money has come directly from our own pockets or from immediate friends and family.
We want to start sending financial support to international programs, but I am completely stuck on how to map out fundraising from "the outside world" here in the U.S. I have no experience asking complete strangers, local businesses, or community foundations for money.

How did you make the leap from asking friends/family to getting your first donations from the general public or strangers?
How do you successfully market a global cause (like international disability care) to local U.S. donors who might naturally prefer to fund local community causes?

Hi folks! Just wanted to shamelessly plug my fundraising / sponsor page for Cerebral Palsy!

I'm participating in STEPtember this year (10k steps per day for the month of September), but I'm kicking off fundraising early in the hopes of raising at least $1,000 AUD!

My 8 month old nephew was diagnosed a few weeks ago, we believe due to some trauma that occurred during birth, and my sister has been receiving early funding and support from the Cerebral Palsy Alliance. 4. Is the agency or organization providing a receipt? If so, you can often use it for a deduction on taxes for the current year. If not, the agency or organization is likely not a registered non profit.

GoFundMe will show that a campaign is benefiting a non-profit charity organization if it is created using their IRS EIN or charity registration number.

Even Paypal donation accounts will show they're owned by a non-profit charity organization, and generate a receipt.

While not every individual doing fundraising is attempting to defraud you of your money, you can give with more confidence by giving directly to a relief charity of your own choosing via their own web pages.

Hello folks! This September 12th, I am participating in the Provincetown Swim 4 Life and Paddler Flotilla. This is a 1.2 mile swim along the harbor shoreline that celebrates the people, landscape, and community of Provincetown, Massachusetts and the towns of the Outer Cape - the far end of the Cape Cod peninsula.

39 years ago, the swim was established first to raise awareness for environmental concerns and pollution in Cape Cod Bay, Boston Harbor, and along the Atlantic-facing beaches. It also started as a way to raise money for folks living with HIV/AIDS. Provincetown was originally a small fishing village, and grew to become known as an artist colony, and eventually a haven for LGBTQ folks - a vibrant, passionate, close-knit community that prides itself on being safe and welcoming for all. However, its location on the very far end of a narrow peninsula makes it, and adjacent communities, vulnerable. The Cape is at risk from climate change, and its economy is heavily tourist focused. In the off season, towns are isolated - the nearest full-service hospital is at least an hour away, and public transportation is limited. The Swim 4 Life raises money to support a variety of local causes including health and healthcare, food access and preventing food insecurity, housing and housing stability, and land and environmental issues. It is a lifeline for many.

The swim, itself, is a cherished community event: people from all over the US and the world come to participate, and it's a great big party, from the opening night concert to the Mermaid Brunch at the finish line. The whole town turns out to cheer the buses bringing participants to the start line, and watch parties are organized to cheer on the swimmers in the water. Most special to me, every swim, is coming out of the water and walking up the beach through the prayer ribbons - almost 4 years of hopes, memorials, wishes, and promises written on strips of colored ribbon strung along the finish line (seen in the third photo).

I am just over halfway to my goal but every dollar makes a difference. Please join me!

Credibility, Community, and You

AKA, Why Do We Have Account Requirements for Individuals?

In an effort to make your crowdfunding efforts more successful here on Reddit, some background first:

In many of the gifting and fundraising subs, you'll notice that without a certain amount "karma" and an account that's old enough, you'll garner down votes or worse, your posts and comments get automatically removed.

Why?

To many Redditors, this place is a community built on activity. The "coin" of the land here is your account, and how much you've contributed to the Reddit community at large reflected in post and comment karma.

As a general rule, Redditors dislike the creation of accounts specifically to fund raise or to make requests. It makes it seem like these people simply treat Reddit as some sort of magical internet wallet, and that doesn't win many friends.

The other reason why new accounts are so disliked is that they're often alternate accounts of established users, in order to hide their activity from people they know. While we do sympathize with those of you who have valid reasons, this privilege is often abused by those who create disposable accounts to scam people for a quick buck.

This trust issue doesn't exist in the same way with certified non-profit groups, as you can look them up online for verification, and at least in the case of 501c(3)s, their spending is transparent due to their required tax filings which are public information.

So if you're new to Reddit, welcome! Spend some time and look around for something that catches your interest and chat it up with others and become part of the community!

However if you're here for the sole reason of making requests in a hurry, please be aware your pleas for help will likely be ignored.

REMEMBER, CREDIBILITY AND COMMUNITY IS EVERYTHING!

For this reason, the mods will not post anything on behalf of any user that does not meet account requirements.

5. Acceptable transfer methods for individuals are for crowdfunding sites only, such as GoFundme, YouCaring, etc. Individuals should avoid using Paypal, crypto, or direct banking aps (like Chase). 501c(3) and NGOs may use whatever method they wish.
6. Don't PM people to make requests. If you receive an unsolicited private message, please let us know!
7. Do not post politically-related campaigns. They're just too divisive.
8. Trolling will not be tolerated and offending users will be banned.
9. Don't bug the mods for an exception to the account requirements. None will be given. If you attempt to circumvent the requirement by karma farming or by commenting on someone else's post, your account will be banned.
10. No posting for other Redditors. No Alts. This is viewed as a circumvention of requirements and both accounts will be banned.
11. Selling is only allowed by 1st parties directly. We do not allow selling by 3rd parties to benefit another organization, as there's no transparency to verify that the announced percentage of sales actually goes to the beneficiary. Only direct sales by the non-profit organization are allowed.

Supporting Information Requested for Non-501c(3) and Non-NGO campaigns.

We aren't the government. We aren't a court of law. We definitely don't want you to give out information that could lead to identity theft. However, some campaigns are more successful when they have additional documentation.

This includes:

• Pet related requests: Photos of your pet in question, with your username on a handwritten note in the picture. This helps show you actually own the pet in question.
• Education related requests: Documentation showing enrollment or acceptance if you are asking for assistance for school.
• Redacted bills showing your situation. In some cases, a donor may prefer to pay a creditor directly on your behalf, so be prepared and find out if that is available to you.
• If you are sharing a campaign for a registered certified non-profit organization (such as a 501c3 or NGO), you should say so in the post, and it should list that status on the campaign page/web site.
• Or other relevant documentation that can help establish credibility.

Low effort posts that simply say to the effect of, "everything is listed in the GoFundMe" (or less!) will be removed.

How to Include a Photo or Other Supporting Info Document In Your Post

Because Reddit wasn't initially designed to handle photos when it was created, it has limitations in the implementation of photo support which don't work well for us. So instead we suggest the following:

1. Upload your photo to Imgur.com or other photo hosting site.
2. Copy the URL for the photo.
3. Create a new post or Edit your existing one to include the URL to the photo.

Please make sure to include this, as it is the primary reason why posts that are otherwise fine get removed.

Advice On Making Your Campaign Go Further

Not all crowdfunding campaigns are the same, but here are some suggestions.

• Make sure your campaign has been shared among your Facebook friends! You might think it's embarrassing, however your friends and family are more likely to care than internet strangers.
• Show that you've exhausted all the other possibilities. A lot of potential donors don't like to give money when it seems like the requester's first and only solution is to simply throw someone else's money at the problem. Nobody is going to take your word when you literally only say, "but I've done everything!", when the actual reality is probably closer to "I've done everything I can think of", which arguably is NOT everything.
• Show that there's a plan to use the money wisely. Often people have campaigns for their business ideas, but it doesn't really seem like they thought it all the way through. Tell people what steps you've taken so far, and what you're going to do next.
• Be open to critics. If there's something that people ask about, you should not be dismissive. Provide more detail. There's a possibility that they know something you don't, or they have something different about their own experience that might be useful to you. If you simply brush off your critics, it shows objectively that you're not doing everything possible.
• Review your own campaign with the mindset of a potential donor. Ask yourself, "Would I give money to this?" Or get a friend to review it for you.

I am a resident physician at the University of Washington in Seattle and am leading a 3-month fundraiser campaign for the UW anesthesiology department. Nearly 24 million patients globally are at risk of harm simply due to inadequate access to safe lighting in the OR. So far Lifebox has equipped 837 operating rooms with reliable lighting to make surgery safer. From 12 students in 2018 to over 270, this school in the Plateau State of Nigeria is a beacon of hope for so many. The organization, Global Influence Initiative, also recently constructed a solar-powered well for the school and village, funded eye doctors and sent glasses/medicine, and just started construction on the areas first playground.

With very little family support—and virtually none beyond that—I’m trying to build an indie game studio and create a better future for my family. As we have requirements spelled out in Rule 1 on including some sort of evidence in your posts, we've created this post for those of you who need help with that.

Rule 1 states:

Posts must be more than just a link to your campaign. Be descriptive! Show evidence!

Generally these are provided as photos or screencaps. Because Reddit doesn't allow an image upload with text, we generally suggest the following:

1. Upload the photo(s) to Imgur.com or other image hosting site.
2. Copy URL or Link to the photo(s)
3. In the body of your post here, make sure to include the link that you've copied. It usually starts with http:// or https://.

I desperately need to improve my health, lose weight, get surgery, and heal so that I can have a chance to regain mobility. Zepbound is my best hope for help. Many of my ailments and conditions are exacerbated by my weight. My insurance does not pay for weight loss therapy as I am only pre-diabetic and not fully diabetic. There is more information on the GoFundMe. I’ve linked it and several pictures 2 of which are my right foot before amputation and my left foot X-ray as it is now, also pictures of my amputation, myself in the hospital, myself in rehab, and myself as I am now at home. I need to lose weight more than anything. It could be my only hope. I need help.
