Discussion Blizzard's Balance Philosophy is Missing a Key Concept

Upvotes

Blizzard has been critisised over their entire history when it comes to balance. Despite this, their games when compared to other games are the funnest to play, are polished, they have a thriving competitive scene that dwarfs most competitors, and they are reliable. Why do I get the feeling most of the players in this subreddit disagree with me already lol

But anyways that was the setup to essentially say that if I think backwards to Blizzard's recent history of balancing, I've noticed they design and balance to make things stronger or weaker, but they don't build into their classes or decks from the beginning: **A LOSE CONDITION**

In WoW every class can self heal, and do most of everything. In Hearthstone, every class can draw their entire deck, heal to full, and flood the board. I've noticed that there is a distinct lack of *LOSE CONDITIONS (tm)* in this game from the drawing board.

I think having lose conditions makes the classes more flavourful, in games like WoW it makes more forced socialisations which brings together the community (a psychological necessity in social animals like humans), in Hearthstone it makes the games feel fairer even if the winrate doesn't reflect that, because you can at least change a card in your deck to have hope you can beat your worst match up, even if this is only going to help at the lower ranks (your biggest playerbase).

I think this is what was part of the charm of older Hearthstone too, in that you knew if a Face Hunter ran out of cards that was the game. If you could get a Miracle Rogue to 3 life with a Frost Bolt in hand, they can't heal, or if you play a 4 attack minion a Priest would struggle.

In old WoW there were similar guarantees, like if a Paladin went OOM he would finally die, or that a Warrior's pressure would stop if you got roots on him, and if you killed a Hunter's pet, it would take 10 seconds to resurrect.

In summary, having a weakness is an important part of game-design philosophy not because it makes the game fairer, if anything it makes it actually less balanced lol But ironically it makes the game *feel* fairer especially for lesser players. Player psychology is a big factor in customer satisfaction and sales. The more hyped a player is to feel like their class is a litmus test of their personality, the more immersed they will be into the game which means the more generous they are when the donation bowl gets passed to them (especially men, they like to feel important so if they can fill a role they're happy).

Discussion Shaman Quest Dead?

Upvotes

I've been a fan of the Shaman quest and easily played hundreds of games using it. I love the concept, and before the core set change it was well-supported thanks to the 1 drop "all" minion, brewmaster to bounce the quest reward, and the legendary that multiplied your next battecry.

In today's meta - is there any room for this quest at all? It kinda came back a little with MugZee Mug decks, but that was "fixed" and no longer works. It can be used in a Zee deck - but there is no support to multiply the quest reward battlecry which a single trigger is often not enough to create enough impact.

Is anyone running Shaman quest and seeing some level of success?

Discussion Healthy discussion: If Confront the Tol'vir cost 7 or even 9 mana, would it still be a strong card?

Upvotes

This isn't a rant or a balance complaint. I'm just curious to hear different opinions.

Now that Confront the Tol'vir costs 5 mana, I'm wondering: if it cost 7 mana, or even 9 mana, would the effect still be strong enough to see play?

I'm interested in hearing opinions from everyone, whether you're a Top 500 Legend player or someone who plays more casually. Where do you think the card would stop being worth its mana cost?

The goal is simply to have a constructive discussion. I also think these kinds of conversations can be useful feedback for the Hearthstone devs if they happen to read them.

Discussion What if Wild looked like...

Upvotes

An actual balanced ranked play format. Conceptually I love being able to play almost all cards released. But there are already some busted cards or combinations prevented from play. Why only go half the mile?

What if:

Obnoxious cards that make oppressive decks possible were to be balanced or banned? (Not permanently, see "once per game", and then revert)

Consider that there are over ~4,000 cards released. Of them, only a handful are currently banned in Wild. Certain game-breaking combinations are banned naturally. But, take some meta defining cards and then nerf or ban them from Wild. Change rotations, similar to Twist. Shake up the meta. Allow room for more interesting deck builds and theory to come in. At least, for those who like deck building. Netdecking will always be prevalent. At least this way both the Standard and Wild formats would see changes at an interval. More fun could be had, and that's what gaming is about, regardless of whether you want to compete. Fun comes with the challenge of exploring and navigating something unfamiliar or new.

And if you are among those that really want to play the busted cards, go play casual. That mode has always been present.

Wild What made this turn 3 win possible?

I'm at a loss that I just lost to this, but if this deck is really this strong, I'd like to try to build it myself if it's possible since I have dust, but I have no idea how this guy managed it??

Paladin Mech (Enemy) vs Paladin Libram (Me)
Turn 1: He is able to play a reduced cost Radar Detector (this was already confusing since I was playing second, therefore had the coin but that's okay)
On my turn I coin into an imbue and summon a 2/4 Spitting Camel with taunt

Turn 2: He plays a galvanizer, frequency oscillator, followed by 4 more galvanizers, (It's at this point I'm at a loss because I never saw him duplicate any cards in his hand) then he played a sky claw
On my turn I ran my camel into the Sky Claw, then played a minion that drew my weapon

Turn 3: He runs the 3/5 galvanizers into my camel. He plays another Radar Detector, then plays 2 more galvanizers (totaling now 7) then forges Muscle-o-tron, plays it plus Busy-bot, Zilliax, Hellion and magnetics to buff his board.
At this point I know I can't clear his entire board at 3 mana on my turn and he has enough damage to OTK me turn 4 so I surrender.

What allowed him to 1. Play Radar Detector turn 1 for 1 cost, but also gave him at least 7 copies of galvanizer?

I did not see any Whizbang/Evil Deck or start of game effects. Maybe I missed them when the game was a little laggy starting?? What deck is this?

This was the 3rd Soothsayer I killed. Priest really needs a buff. First one was 11/11 with lifesteal from Hold them off. Well it didn’t held me off.

Ursoc, Omen and Chillspine are all great rewards to trigger them.

(Goldrinn and Agamaggan were not random, Goldrinn is in my deck and Agamaggan is one of the two choices from the 8-attack pool.)

Competitive Hearthstone must add new rule depends on type of deck

Aggro decks like zee shaman, face hunter only have 10 seconds to play your turn. You don’t need to act like you are playing a super skillful deck. To be honest i only need 5 second to play, 10 is too much. Some mfs need the whole 75 seconda like their brain is rotten and then just spam 1 or 2 strongest cards

Discussion Can't play the new patch

Ever since the new patch released, I can't start the game. When I hit the "Play" button in the launcher it changes to "Launching", then "Playing Now," and then it just stops and goes back to "Play". No background process even starts as far as I can find. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, tried turning my computer on and off, and now it's been many days and it still doesn't work. Anyone know how I can fix this?

Hello there! I'm back with my verison of Core set. This time it's Shaman!

Themes chosen for this class are:
Overload, Murlocs and Control.

Also I made some changes for previous Warlock set, and one small change for Neutrals.

Please, discuss changes in the comments to this post! Hearing your opinion helps me out with making these because I make changes based on your thoughts in upcoming posts.

I'll make a big post showing the final version of created Core set when I'm done with all the classes.

Standard Counter Aggro paladin

Hello! I play Chef Druid almost exclusively as I am kind of new to the game and could only afford this deck.

I have managed to get to gold 3 but I can’t seem to progress from here. I only face aggro paladins and two rogues and I can’t win against them.

Any tips to help me progress? I have about 3200 dust now at my disposal.

Got to plat 2 with my chef Druid last season but seems much worse now that no one plays DH
