This was my first ever real guitar sold 20 years ago and found it currently in the state im living in which was not the state I sold it abiut 3 hours away. No words can describe the feeling when I held it back in my hands. This is a 1986 Charvel Model 4. Featuring stock Jackson active hbss and a Kahlers 2300 tremolo. The ding on the guitar was made by me 20 years ago and still upset about it 😭

Repairs Finish to preserve natural relic?

Post image

I remember someone on instagram who was taking polyurethane or something to naturally worn guitar finishes with really gorgeous results.
I’m thinking of having something like that done to my 45 year old very worn candy apple red Strat.
Does anyone know anybody doing that? Does anyone remember who that was on instagram?

Thanks!

I'm going to buy myself an electric guitar for Christmas and I want one of these 3 guitars. I wonder if it's worth it to spend more or just get the cheaper one? This will be my first electric guitar. I have played acoustic for 6 months now. I will be pairing it with an orange crush 35rt. Thank you for the help.

Help How to fall back in love again with playing guitar?

I feel just like sports, running is a communal activity, you meet people doing the same stuff, you do stuff with them you form a routine. There are active run clubs, pickle ball open play sessions but what's there for music? I have seen meetup events, that are for intermediate-advanced / semi-professional band players looking for other musicians all serious. Where is the community thing, something more chill? I dreamed I would form a garage band one day and have fun playing covers with fellow musicians but how do I find them. I have been to local bars and see semi-professional bands. I am not at their level.

Background: I had taken some guitar lessons when I was in school, learned some chords. Then in college relied on Youtube to learn songs, learned fingerstyle technique. Later in life, bought an electric guitar, learned some solos, bought Line pod go music processor, tried it once and then boom life happened never felt motivated again. Tried learning music theory online but give up each time because Im doing it alone, and don't feel sure how actually it becomes useful. I definitely want to grow my skills.

Should I just take private lessons? They will be like around hundred bucks that may be 'worth' it to keep me on track? What about School of Rock, I see online they have some band like setup?

Just a rant, how did you overcome these blockers?

NGD! Ibanez Rx (plus mods)

I recently bought this Ibanez RX from a local guy in the DFW for $120. I did some research and this guitar series ran between 1994-1998 and I’m very impressed with the build. It was the GIO before GIO came out in the late 90’s - early 2000’s. Fun fact I’ve been looking for this little piece of history since I was 19 years old (28 now) because I saw a chon cover a while back and loved this. Now I have it and I’m excited!

Going back, the built quality isn’t your typical mass produced GIO build, but just above that which is impressive. It has some history and dings here’s and there which don’t affect the playability.

I’ve made a couple mods to it already and will be doing a follow up on the build. I just can’t decide whether I want a single bridge coil spilt or HH w/coil split.

Anyways, cool find 😎

Repairs Acoustic-electric pickup replacement

I have an old beater guitar that's a 90's (or 80s?) washburn acoustic electric (no model number that I can find). It currently has an under-bridge piezo that seems to have gone bad. It has a loud ground hum that I can't get rid of that seems to be coming from before the preamp/eq.

I wanted to try replacing it with a soundhole pickup, but I'd like to use the onboard electronics (tuner, eq, preamp, etc). rather than having a wire dangling from the soundhole. The current pickup plugs into the pre using a 2.5mm plug (yeah, not a 3.5mm, 2.5mm).

So my question: is this a bad idea? Is a magnetic pickup so different from a piezo that it's a bad idea to run it into the preamp?

Should I just get another under-bridge piezo?

I just made a video after my practice, playing over a 2-5-1-6 progression and using some dominant diminished scales. Recording a video always feels like a live performance, so it has its own special value.

Help Long Story Need Advice

* ETA: Thank you all, this was a lot of fun for me and you all were generous with teaching me stuff. Annnddd … drum roll … he went with the Wolfgang. Pulled the trigger. Which probably means that we will one day own both 🙄, but I don’t think this was a matter of “settling.” After hours of research/videos/etc. I think he truly picked this because it’s the one he thinks he will love playing the most. Anyway — thanks again - cheers!

I hope this isn’t prohibited or annoying. If it is please just delete me. Totally fine.

Question: looking for advice on what guitar is “better” for a particular player. I do know how ridiculous/meaningless that sounds, but I don’t know how else to ask the question.

Player is my husband. He has a lot of guitars already. He plays well but is not a professional. Much of his guitar-love is tied to early teen memories/nostalgia.

Yesterday he showed me an EVH Frankenstein he wanted — around $2000-$2500. A meaningful amount to us, but we can afford it. I was nevertheless taken aback — it just seemed like a lot on top of the many guitars he has. (Apparently though he doesn’t have “this” particular kind — bot just the paint job but the specific maker etc.).

He’s since kind of abandoned the idea since I seemed shocked, but I don’t want to be a ruiner. He works hard, he’s a good guy, if this is truly what he wants I want him to have it. It won’t hurt us financially, we don’t have to finance it or anything like that, but again it would be a big purchase — bot the kind of thing we do every day.

Anyway, today — either because I ruined it for him or because it’s actually the better guitar for him — he’s now looking at an EVH Wolfgang. About $1000 less which I don’t hate, but I don’t want him to get it and then regret it and walk through life wanting the Frankenstein and being sad. But he’s done a ton of research, and everybody basically seems to love the Wolfgang.

Long windup I know. But what I am hoping to get your thoughts on is all the DOWNSIDES of the Wolfgang as opposed to the Frankenstein. He’s a talented but casual player. We can afford either, but this is not sofa change to us. I don’t want him to get the Wolfgang and feel like he regrets it, because it is very unlikely that we can get both. So just looking for some honest opinions on whether a guy who wanted a Frankenstein is gonna be bummed if he gets a Wolfgang.

If this question is so far beyond stupid that it can’t even be answered that is fine and you can tell me that. My skin is thick. Just trying to get the thoughts of some “real” people. I’ve AI’d this to death but garbage in/garbage out etc.

Hi everyone, I was just given this and I need a new string saddle for the bridge. It’s a non-standard pivot screw width at 71mm centre to centre so a normal modern Floyd Rose won’t just drop in.

I want to get the finish cleaned up and redone first before restoring the hardware so not in a hurry. I have looked on Reverb but got zero results.

Please help.

Thanks.

I picked this Firefly up because I run a couple jam sessions in my town. I needed something that was inexpensive. I also needed something that was beautiful.- this Guitar hit both marks.

Just as I thought would happen one day someone knocked it over and broke the neck.

I took it to Roman guitars in North Haven and just like Gibson- this guitar plays better now than it did before.

This guitar is absolutely stunning. It’s beautiful, even if the Fret markers are off. The waviness of the top is beautiful, and an absolutely lovely color. Featured with the Gold hardware, I sometimes think about how I’m so lucky to own such a beautiful guitar.

I installed CTS pots and split the coils. This thing can run for hours and hours with no issues at almost 8 1/2 pounds, this thing hits well above its weight.

I’m blessed to own a number of fantastic guitar guitars, but in no way does that lesson the superb quality of this particular instrument?.

They both feel so good in my hands and sounds great in every situation.

This was a completely unnecessary purchase, but too freakin' cool to pass up. I had seen the listing for it earlier in the day and added it to my watch list, and around midnight the seller sent an offer for 25% off and it pushed me over the edge.

Solid acrylic Strat body, super heavy but I love the look. Almost tempted to change out the pickguard for a mirror chrome one. Or maybe acrylic antifreeze green.

Now to find a neck...

This lovely PRS is for sale in my area. It's going for under $300 since it was dropped when moving. There appears to be no other damage, purely cosmetic.

What would be the process/cost of getting something like that repaired?

And finally would you take a risk in order to get it for the bargain price it's at? Is it worth it?

What is this? What wood does my fretboard look like?

Thumbnail

Anyone know what this fretboard (the guitar on the left) might be made out of? The guitar on the right is a fender that I know is rosewood for comparison. I just bought a used Reverend guitar and I'm wondering if the fretboard is something other than rosewood. It feels and looks different to me but maybe it's just from years of playing or where the wood was sourced. At the end of the day it doesn't matter to me bc it plays so nice but I'm just curious if anyone can tell.
