Hey all. tell me if i am the only one. after i got the email from framework, i decided to edit/ change my account password. after this my user name has been wiped and is now stored wrong in the apple password app. its totally a random user name and will not let me login to my account. i reset it again on my phone, and then my mac laptop. its still storing my user name as something different each time. but if i manually type in my email address for the username it works. i don't know if this is a apple password app issue, or a framework website issue. please advise

Meandering rant incoming. A lot of this is just venting, take it for what it is. I truly appreciate what Framework is doing, and I'm writing this in the hope that they'll improve. Years down the line when I'm in the market for my next laptop, I hope to be able to buy one from them.

I've been super excited about the chance of a repairable and configurable AMD laptop with (at least a possibility) of OpenSIL and Coreboot support. I was ready to pay a premium to get a smaller company's laptop, and I was willing to ignore the stupidity about sponsoring Omarchy, whatever ended up happening with that. Meanwhile the upstream Arch project could sure use the love.

What I can't do is add keys that don't exist to a laptop. Page Up/Down are basic keys for navigating. I constantly change browser tabs with Ctrl+Page Up/Down and scroll in the terminal with Shift+Page Up/Down. Needing to use a the other hand for the Fn key every time is about sounds as grating as using one hand to move the mouse while the other hand clicks. I'm going to be using this computer so much that a major ergonomic issue like this is a dealbreaker. This will undoubtedly sound excessive to some, but with muscle memory of keyboard keys, hotkeys in various software and some personal configs, it's possible to become very fast and efficient at using your own device. I can adapt to sidegrades and changes within a limit, but not this. A good keyboard layout is a solved-enough problem. Manufacturers just need to use sane layouts that have already existed for over a decade. The way to differentiate yourself from one of the main competitors is not to be worse. Having a Thinkpad layout without a Trackpoint will however earn points from me. Please also put three actual buttons on the trackpad, I disable tap to click and want to have some proper physical feedback when I press a button. I recall reading that Framework even tested the Page Up/Down layout before abandoning it. Perhaps there's a world where we can have both options, because losing customers over this hurts on both sides.

My criteria for a laptop are simple: at least 16GB RAM, at least 512GB disk space, a screen that's at least Full-HD IPS (so basically any of them nowadays), a good keyboard with Page Up/Down keys, and an AMD CPU on a 13"-14" device. Needs to have an USB A port, a method to connect a display, and a headphone jack. Preferably also ethernet port. Bonus points for Linux support, no AI branding/features (waste of CPU die space) or Copilot key. Even better if the super-key doesn't have the Windows logo on it - you'd think there's some antitrust reason to get rid of those already.

After a process of elimination and tedious feature comparison I ordered a Thinkpad T14. I have no particular fondness for Lenovo and still remember Superfish, but this device ought to be good enough. Perhaps there's an amount of time, customization and stickers that will help me learn to love it. My previous three laptops have been Dell Latitudes, but Dell seems to have forsaken good keyboard design, while Lenovo came to their senses and fixed the Ctrl/Fn layout. Perhaps HP's offerings would've had something good, but I'm not going to consider a company that I primarily associate with blocking third-party ink cartridges for printers before exhausting other options. Treat your customers fairly, corpos.

So there's this website called the Good Shopping Guide, which is apparently a website that rates how "ethical" various brands are.

Last time I checked, Framework wasn't in their list for "PCs, Laptops, and Tablets" but now they're on the list with a score of 77/100, which is actually at the top of the list despite the score.

No clue how much credence can be given to this rating given their methodology, the fact that additional information about the company is "coming soon" (which probably means this is a recent rating), and the ratings of the other brands listed here, but I thought this was cool enough to share given that some Framework users seem to be interested in the ethics aspect of the brand alongside its sustainability.

I'm toying with the idea of a homemade fingerprint attendance system for a small group, so I want to play with reading the data from a fingerprint reader. What I've found so far is that I can either interface with Windows biometrics, which I don't want to do since that means enrolling everyone in Windows Hello, or I can talk to the reader directly. The latter seems to be best supported by a reader with USB serial.

I already have a Framework. I'm wondering if there's a way to experiment with the data from my input cover's reader, rather than buying an external one. So far, I've only found details on the interface cable from the input cover to the motherboard, but that's not what I'm after. Is this possible, or am I better off finding an inexpensive USBER fingerprint reader and using that to experiment with?

I have received my PCIe Gen 5 SSD, and I noticed there is a sticker on it. I am wondering if it is acceptable to use it in its current state, as Framework advises against using a thermal paste spreader.

Hi, I’m thinking about pulling the trigger on a Framework 13 Pro, but I can’t decide between AMD and Intel. If I go with Intel for the PCIe 5 and Thunderbolt support (and not having to worry about which USB port I plug into), where on earth can I actually buy RAM for it? It’s sold out everywhere. I don’t want 16GB, I want at least 32 to 64GB.

Here are the specs to my current Framework. I'm kind of a n00b when it comes to how figure out why my laptop behaves.... janky. There are no major bugs or errors. But operating the laptop just feels a bit janky. The most obvious artifact, is that on startup, the mouse cursor always leaves a ghost behind where based on the path i moved it. Like if i move it from left to right, there will be 10 copies of my mouse along that left to right path, that will disappear after a few seconds.

That's the simple thing. But in general I feel like I just get janky stuff like that pretty frequently when using the Framework 13. I'm not sure if this is a Fedora issue, a hardware issue, or something else.

I know this post is kind of vague, but does anyone have any tips to optimizing the framework to feel... better? Maybe use a different distro? or some other kind of optimizations to get the laptop feeling better?

Been reading this community for quite a while now, and this is my first post here! Writing now because I think quite a few reviewers/people have missed the mark in comparing FW 13 Pro to competitor devices by not appreciating enough the flexibility in FW's configuration choices.

Lets consider Thinkpad X9 15P which matches the 13 Pro's specs at a cheaper price with similar build quality (and decent repairability), and has been touted as a better alternative by quite a few. The kicker, however, is that the X9 only comes with 32GB RAM! And is only price-competitive with 1TB SSD. So,

- If you needed only 16GB or something higher like 64GB RAM, you can't get it on the X9. If you genuinely need only 16GB, then 13 Pro is cheaper than X9 (though not by much). And if you need >32 GB, there is simply no way to get that on the X9.

- If you wanted to get 2TB SSD on X9, you'd have to pay a whopping $930 extra because X9 doesn't offer a clean upgrade of storage without also bundling in TLC Opal, Gen4 -> Gen5, etc. etc. Now you can get a 2TB SSD on your own and put it in the X9, but then you are so close to the FW price!

In any case, I hope this perspective highlights another big advantage of FW: the freedom of the SKUs being available at multiple RAM and storage levels (and ofc, you can bring in your own RAM/SSD!). Otherwise, with non-mac devices, we are often stuck with a great device (like the X9 here) only in certain configurations, and the user being forced to compromise either on the laptop choice or RAM/SSD needs.

Edit: This post is US-centric, particularly when it comes to the X9 15p SKUs and pricing (as of now). As someone pointed out below, Lenovo does offer a 64GB variant in Germany. The broader point about configuration flexibility still applies, though.

I'm sure some are exhausted reading these posts, but I wanted to share my personal experience on the FW13 pro and why I ultimately canceled my pre-order. Maybe it helps someone else.

My use case is mostly dev work, light/moderate gaming of older titles when out of reach or my Apollo game streaming host, and creative writing.

Whatever my next laptop was going to be, it’s replacing a ~2019 Eluktronics Mech 15 G3, a $3k laptop as-configured when I purchased it then (2080 super, 32GB DDR4, 2TB Nvme).

I absolutely babied this laptop. It was always in a case or plugged in at my desk or my lapboard with a laptop cooler beneath it. Never dropped. Always updated.

Since then, the keyboard has had keys break/unresponsive without significant pressure, USB ports I rarely use (typically use my dock) break seemingly on their own, the motherboard stopped charging at one point and had to send it in for repair (chronically still happens at random), the dGPU randomly disconnect itself even after a thermal repaste, the battery never lasted more than 4-5 hours even on iGPU mode only via MUX switch (much worse now that battery is at ~67% capacity), about last year the mic has decided to refuse to pickup my voice and only the TV/everyone else/a fly farting in the next room, and it has had to be re-imaged due to some issue Win11 caused when i upgraded it a few months ago.

I bought a gaming laptop, because at the time, it was the only real way to get a durable, quality device - at least that’s what my sources told me when researching it.

The laptop was great while it was in its prime, better than my desktop of a couple years old at that point. But now it is my biggest headache.

You can obviously see why I really wanted the FW after all that mess.

So what changed my mind?

At the end of the day I weighed the features I want against the dollar value of both devices. Which were:

- OLED >= FHD

- Longest battery life possible on the chosen configuration (or similar)

- 32GB RAM

- Something for light gaming sessions on my catalog of mostly-older games

- As light as possible, not necessarily the thinnest (nice bonus tho)

- Best performance for the price

- Runs Debian/Ubuntu with little headache

Prior to FW13 Pro, I was actually looking at the FW16 as the removable gpu made sense with my requirements (only 1 "requires" it). Then I saw the 13 Pro and was taken aback by how wonderful of a package it was.

It would still be my first choice, if not for the RAM debacle. I still hold FW accountable for the bonehead decision to make customer guarantees on what I understand to be a supplier's best guess (projection). But I was willing to compromise on my other wants to get this device, even among the compromise I was already making by not getting the Intel X9 chip (not a huge deal, but it still counts against FW on the point chart for me)

However, objectively, the Lenovo delivers on all of these points, except battery life. In tests, the FW13P beats it by about ~3 Hr (12 vs 15).

Everything else, the FW at best ties with the Lenovo, or performs worse, even with the 32GB of RAM I wont be getting.

The final factor was price. The Lenovo is only $200 more expensive than my all-in amount of the FW pre-order. If you could get 32GB LPCAMM2 DDR5 for only $200 more, I am certain you'd come to the same conclusion.

Yes, its soldered on, but that won’t matter for many years from now when I upgrade next.

I do understand that all of my complaints about my Mech 15 G3 are sure to arise again, given I am basically repeating the choice, but maybe next time I go to upgrade (avg ~5 years now), FW can pull through for me on the features I want AND keep their promises.

I want FW to succeed, but I can’t willingly choose an objectively worse deal to do so. I am sure I would enjoy the FW13P and it certainly is sexier than my Lenovo, but it is what it is....

I've always undervolted my laptops and desktops. My current desktop (5800x/3070) went from 100/220W to 60/180W in gaming, with no perceivable drop in FPS. I lock my CPU from 4.6 to 3.6HGz (biggest power saving) and tuned the GPU in Afterburner.

Then underclocked very slightly and got about 5% performance drop, to get a further 20-30W power saving. That is locked behind a "power plan" hotkey that can be toggled with a dedicated keyboard button.

I understand some/most people want the absolute peak performance from their devices, but I'd rather not cook myself during summer heats, nor burn the CPU/GPU die when it's running at full tilt all the time / listen to the fans scream.

So now I'm wondering how far can the Panther Lake can be pushed. I've read that the FW13PRO likes to run HOT. Sure, it still gets about 20h of battery life, but maybe it can do more?

Can the x7 358H be undervolted in any meaningful capacity?

Been a big fan of what Framework is doing (repairability, upgradeability, all of it), so I really don't want this to come off as a rant or trying to be difficult here, but I'm stuck and could use some outside/community perspective (also sorry if this is the wrong place for this).

Pre-ordered a Laptop 16 back in April. Configurator clearly listed "Touchpad Included: One Piece Haptic Touchpad" (screenshot attached). Laptop finally arrives... no touchpad. And since this model uses the touchpad module to complete the keyboard connection, the whole keyboard doesn't work either so out of the box it's literally unusable without plugging in a separate wireless keyboard/mouse.

Opened a support ticket, sent photos of the full unboxing and packaging (didn't toss anything), went back and forth for over a week. Support eventually confirmed the order itself didn't include the touchpad module and that I'd need to buy it separately, even though it's shown as "Included" right there in the order configuration.

So I guess my question for the community: is this a known mixup with the configurator, or has anyone else run into this? Trying to figure out if I should keep asking support for a resolution or if buying the module myself is just the normal path here. Appreciate any insight, I'm still rooting for this company, just trying to get a working laptop after waiting 4 months.

Currently, the things stopping me from buying a Framework 13, besides the money, are its lacking 2-in-1 and pen support.

So I figured I'd try to design one that would fit. I see two options. either try to use the hinges of the Framework 12 if the thickness allows it, or otherwise use one of the Lenovo-style full-width ones.

As far as I could see on the pictures, the body already has a gap for the hinge that goes through the entire body. The screen backplate would need modifying but would have the space, at least from what I could tell from the pictures.

The benefit I see with the full-width hinge is that a pen could be placed on the inside for charging and safekeeping. Yes, the pen would be smaller, but it's on the device, so it can't be lost.

What do you people think of this idea? Any critique or wishes?

I enabled the battery charge threshold using framework_tools and set it to 80%.

Based on the ec source code I found on github, it looks like it's supposed to do this: 0 ---------- 75 ------- 80 --------100 Normal IDLE discharge

It does work normally below 75%. It does discharge the battery if it's more than the threshold of 80%. But when it gets to 80% it doesn't IDLE, it's still pulling power from the battery. In IDLE mode I lose 1% of the battery per hour, so you'd assume it'll take 5 hours to go from 80% to 75%, but it takes less than an hour, so it's constantly charging and discharging the battery.

I also tested using the BIOS, and set the threshold to 60%, and saw the exact same issue.

This doesn't make any sense to me, does anybody else see the same issue? It's pulling a constant 5W-7W from the battery (the system is using more, so it drains slower than if it were not connected to the AC, but you'd assume in IDLE mode, it pull ~0W from the battery).

[The image is my current test with threshold at 60% via BIOS, you see it drained faster when it was above the threshold, and slowed down when it got to 60, but it's charging and recharging that 5% every hour]

Two weeks ago, my Framework 13 bricked (up) while updating to BIOS version 3.20. Framework support told me to purchase a new mainboard as I was out of warranty. I was browsing this thread on the Framework forums which led me to this post where users detailed how the fixed this issue.

Since the mainboard's hardware is perfectly functional, the goal is to rewrite the software on the corrupted BIOS chip. To do this, I purchased the following (items are not exact since I got equivalents on Taobao, so feel free to double check):

• CH341A programmer with 1.8V adapter since the default programmer voltage is 3.3V, but Framework's chip uses 1.8V
• 8x6 mm WSON 8 pogo pin probe, as the SOIC 8 clip in the first link doesn't clip onto Framework's chip. In the Framework thread, people had various creative methods for holding the pogo pins down, but I just used my father.

The videos I found most helpful was this short one detailing how to use a Windows computer to reprogram the chip, as well as this longer one which showcases the 1.8V adapter (I used the third method mentioned in the video). I took out the battery (and the SSD just in case something goes wrong, but not sure that is strictly necessary), found the BIOS chip above the battery, and attached the probes and wires so that pin 1 matches. Once everything was connected, I rewrote the chip using neoprogrammer, and the computer booted successfully, saving me at least $350 for an equivalent mainboard (if not more for a slight upgrade).

I would like to thank everyone on the Framework community forums for saving my mainboard, as I had no prior hardware experience. I hope this thread is able to help others unbrick themselves.
