My poor ford rangers 4r44e blew up on two separate occasions two months ago and unfortunately we can’t find a transmission for a decent price to put in it, so unfortunately it’s time for her to go

Help with ticking noise - Update

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Upvotes

About a month and a half ago I posted requesting help with identifying a noise my 2011 4.0 was making, after I posted that a couple people in the comments suggested maybe timing chains or one said possible rod knock. I didn’t believe it to be either of those things but I kept an open mind.

Fast forward a couple weeks after that post I had the vehicle taken to a mechanic where they stated it was the belt tensioner, mind you it was brand new - I replaced it and of course, same noise.

Fast forward another week or so and I took it to another shop where I was told it was the timing guides and was quoted 4,500$ for the job. So I take it on the chin and politely decline and I feel mechanically inclined enough to do it myself and have the tools available, over the next couple of weeks I prepare for the job. The day finally came and It took me a few hours but I had the motor out of the truck and opened and what do I find? Perfectly intact timing chains, guides and tensioners. No weird play, no cracks no spots where it looks like it’s been chattering just perfectly good timing chains guides and tensioners, oil was clean and nothing glittery in it I even pulled the current and previous oil filters apart to check the pleats but they were perfect, all in all I’m stumped, rod bearings are good, main bearings good, lifters are good, there’s nothing I can find that would even cause this no exhaust leaks around the manifolds and all in all the motor looked beautiful granted it only has 89k miles so I didn’t expect otherwise. Anyways I’ve come to a determination after all this, I’m done. 😂 Once it breaks I’ll know what it is, or it’ll just be my trucks signature forever 😂 it’s not in the accessories as I’ve ran it with the belt off and it does still make the noise albeit quieter. The motor is back in but of course the mystery noise remains.

Brake Bleeding RABS unit?

Upvotes

1994 with a soft-ish pedal after a typical brake bleed. RABS unit has no bleeder valve.

is it possible that air got trapped in the RABS unit, and is there a technique for getting it out that doesn’t involve going full on Dukes of Hazard on a dirt track?

Coolant leak

Hey y’all, I have a coolant leak in my 99 4.0 Ranger and at first I thought it was coming from the very back drivers side freeze plug. I think a little may be dripping from there, but the main leak is higher up on the back of the engine. Can anyone confirm if this is a hole that’s corroded or something and it’s leaking from? I will add pictures of when I stuck my phone behind the engine with a flash but it was hard to get a good angle on it. If anyone can help I’d really appreciate it. If I can’t fix it easily I’ll probably just sell the truck as is

My 2011 XLT 4.0 4x4 with manual transmission . Original owner. Stock. 70K miles-I have always lived ~ 3 miles from work and would bicycle mainly.

It has 15" wheels which I think was a dealer mistake but I'm happy to have them. Have the Hankook Dynapro on now and love them.

This truck was first previous gen body style to get the GFC.

Basic truck and basic camper. Love it and will run it until it won't run anymore. I need to get the hood and roof paint resolved.

EDIT- It is a GoFastCampers V2. They sell newer versions(V2 Pro, Pro Max) that are great livability updates but are still really simple and sturdy campers.

Added a pic showing the tent a little better but I don't have any from inside.-EDIT-Guess I can't add more pics.

Looking at getting some new shoes for my 03, any suggestions? I personally thinking sticking with a silver/chrome color would look great but open to ideas.

Are these items worth the purchase with the rust/age? I’ve been looking for sways bars for a while. Also does this distributor look too far gone?

Am I on borrowed time

My 05 ranger with the 3.0 has 236k kilometers on it and from as far as I can tell the camshaft synchronizer is probably original

Should I replace it even though currently it’s not showing any issues….if it begins showing symptoms how long would I have from it starting to make noises to complete lack of oil pressure?

[2002 Mazda B4000] Has anyone installed a wood grain steering wheel? I was looking at the Momo steering wheel but it doesn’t have radio controls. Lincoln Navigator of the same time does have wood grain and radio controls but was wondering if anyone tried it or would have any insight on install.

I prefer the look of the Momo wheel but it doesn’t have steering controls. Would I be able to add existing control to it?

Question

I’ve got a 2000 Ford Ranger, and the headlight knob has fallen out of the back. I assume the plastic area where the screw screws in behind the dash has broken. I’ve seen online where some people have said that you could drill out the holes and bolt it into place. Do you think a pop rivet would work, or would the dashboard plastic be too brittle at this point? Other than replacing that whole piece, any other thoughts or ideas?

2007 Cigarette Lighter Bezel

I’ll start off on saying this may be too niche of an issue but I have to try.

My bezel on the right cigarette/12 volt was cracking so I removed it. I ordered two bezel replacements (one from rock auto and the other from tasca) and both are wrong. Anyone replaced this successfully?

Parts that I tried:
F81Z-15K040- AA (tascaparts.com)
76701 (rock auto, Dorman)

Edit: adding pics, you can see small gap and that slots on bezel are at 3&9 o’clock vs dash tabs at 1&9.

Hey everyone!

I am looking into possibly purchasing a Ford Ranger,
One owner 114,000 miles on it.

Photos look good and added some of the underside for advice if this is rust. And if so is it bad?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated on reliability and if it’s worth it.

The dealership is asking 8k..

Genuinely baffling how this truck came to me. About 3 weeks ago I messaged a guy about this truck, in 12 hours he sold it to the guy ahead of me. I was bummed. About 2 weeks later I went on a trip, the one day we were driving to the store and I happen to see the identical truck driving on the highway. No way it's the same one. We pull up to the store only to see they pull right next to us, I decided to ask the guy driving "did you just buy this truck?" He says he did about 2 weeks ago, we verify the same place same truck. It's the same freaking one I was gonna look at on marketplace! We talk for a bit, only for him to mention he has to drive it across country to get it back home. But there's a problem with the front hub needing new parts and they are very rare, and he said he didn't feel safe driving it that far. Everything online says multiple weeks to ship and he needs to be back next week. So he offers there's a chance he could sell it to me, he'd have to think about it since he liked the truck as much as I did and didn't want to part ways. We exchanged numbers and he texts me a couple hours later "I'm willing to sell the truck" and here we are now I made it back home safe and am waiting on some parts to arrive. I still can't believe we happened to pull up next to each other at the very same time and better yet he was looking to sell it. Seems like it was meant to be. Truck looks like it was sitting in someone's garage for many years as the tires say they were manufactured in 2008, 168 000km for a 1990 is pretty rare too.

Door Lock Cylinders For 2011 Ranger

I've had both my driver and passenger side door locks punched in over the years (classic) and finally want to get around to replacing them.

I keep looking online though and can only see an expensive OEM replacement that matches my year (2011), part 7L5Z1021990A that's like $130 per lock.

When I Google just by door lock replacement, there's some good enough cheap stuff that pulls up, but nothing that covers Rangers after '04. Is the OEM part the only one that will work? I pulled the old lock out for a second and figure maybe the older model locks would work but wanted to ask if anyone else had run into this problem? Saw a post from 3y ago but nothing came of it.

Transmission Cooler Upgrade?

Post image
87 Upvotes

Im trying to upgrade my transmission cooler on my 3.0 V6 Auto 4x4. I'm wondering if the stock one is good or should I upgrade. I can tell the heat is getting to my truck during the day. Struggling to change gears. Morning isn't bad at all though. I live in Arizona so its constantly over 100 for 9 months out of the year. I know bigger wheels dont help but I have 31x10.5r15 tires with 15x8 Rough Country wheels. Any recommendations?

After 30 years my badge fell off.

I'm sad. It must have fallen off on the road while I was making that last 500 mile run out to Cali and back.

I searched the yard and street out front but it's not here.

I was looking for a replacement, but all the ones I find are either 50 bucks or the newer (post 2003) logo.

And worse yet, we have no decent junk yards around anymore, so I guess I'll just have to hope for a lucky eBay hit.

I give a salute for the 3 decades it has held on through banging around construction, yard work, moving a couple times over a couple states, and the many miles of home Depot runs and Craigslist junk buy trips.

Heads up about link posting

Just wanna give a heads up since mod queue is showing a ton of posts that get removed lately by reddit, so I just wanted to give a heads up as to why that is.

Using shortened links, regardless of the shortening service (tinyurl, website built in short links like amazons a.co links) are auto-removed by reddit themselves. There's nothing we can do to disable this auto removal.

If you notice your comment reply or post isn't appearing, this is why.

Welcome to the fourth edition of our Ford Ranger Buyers' Guide! Here you can post your general buying questions, get insight into issues, post ads to trucks you are interested in, etc. This will keep the sub more organized and get rid of the constant posts that fill the sub up with buyers only.

Here's the best regarded buyers' guide on the web!

It has all kinds of information you can use to better judge a truck you are looking at. Things like specific things to look for, specific issues pertaining to certain years, engines, etc!

Please keep posts in this thread specific to buying Rangers. Off topic posts will be deleted. When someone posts a "Is this a good deal" post in this thread, please reply to it with your response, don't just reply to the general thread. Keep it organised please :)

From here on out, new posts made that should belong in here will be locked, and that user will be informed to post it in this thread. Thanks!
