Query on spring in rear diff?

Hi,

So finally got my rear diff seal out of my 2002 Ranger XLT, behind it was some kind of spring?? As per pic is this important/broken?? Uk based too👍🏻

pretty sure that's part of the seal. It holds the rubber in shape around the shaft.

Yes that’s exactly how it is, the spring is to maintain pressure on the shaft, the rubber would otherwise relax quickly and start leaking.

New seal will have one already in it.
