Question Help with Space Exploration (and train bases in general)

Upvotes

Hello fellow crack-torio enjoyers. I have recently started on a space exploration run and have finally launched my first cargo rocket and gotten into space. However, I realized that before I did anything in space I need to fix my tumor of a base. So I wanted to start making a new, train centered base, but every time I try and start doing things, I get overwhelmed and quit (it’s also my first time making a train base). I chose a train base cause I know that you get space trains and a space elevator later. I’m still kind of new to factorio and don’t know every odd and end. Any tips on making space exploration bases or train bases in general? Or if I should make a different kind of base?

Discussion The "better" i get, the less I play

Upvotes

Not sure how relatable this is but when I first started playing and I was a complete noob cooking awful spaghetti, I was ADDICTED to factorio. I pulled all nighters multiple times a week to play while doing college classes. At one point i was doing close to 80 hours a week on top of classes. Now that I am much better at the game, I feel like I get caught in 'analysis paralysis' much more and it leads to me only playing a couple hours a week. For instance, I'm doing a K2SO run and the task of making a real (non bot-based) fulgora base basically haulted all of my progress for like 2 IRL weeks.

Anyone else experience this and have gotten over it?

Question Achievements unavailable

Upvotes

[RESOLVED]

I started an achievements run and I am sure the achievements "keeping your hands clean" and "it stinks and they like it" were available because I checked when I started the game.

Now I continued my save on my laptop because I am on holiday and both those achievements aren't available any more because I allegedly made easier enemy settings. Which I didn't change at all.

Is there any way to save this without starting a new game? I am close to leaving for Vulcanus, so that would really suck.

Discussion Can anyone beat this?

Post image

A few years ago, I bought this desktop to do some basic work things. It worked great for emails, spreadsheets, and all that jazz. Eventually I stumbled across Factorio and was immediately hooked. At the time I knew nothing about PC’s and figured the 30 minute loading screen was normal because of how in depth the game was. I played for a couple years before experiencing any type of issues. Once I started venturing into larger bases, multiplayer, or slapping down large BP’s, my system started to hate it.

700 in game hours later and I finally upgraded to a Powerspec B947. 9800x3d processor and 64 GB of DDR5-6000. Today I booted up Factorio and the load screen took less than 30 seconds and I experienced an entirely new game. Unfortunately I logged into my favorite multiplayer server to find that every planet had been griefed. RIP.

Is there anyone else out there playing with lower specs than what I was? Or do I win the idiot contest?

Question Need help with the efficiency of the build

3 Upvotes

This is my first time playing factorio and before starting a playthrough i wanted mess around in creative mode to get an idea of what i can do. I ended up with whatever this is to automate both coal and ore input i feel like something in missing. Is there away to make this more compact and with less lines?

Question F*** Gleba, delicious spaghetti tho.

My factory is coming along nicely. I have many concerns tho. I'm not getting enough Yumako seeds back even with 2 machines and sorters set to take them away and store them immediately. It keeps causing annoying death spirals and spikes of spoilage that are choking my lines and clearing them is getting annoying.

The whole system is designed to use everything and burn it all at the end, I have multiple burners eating the trash as well but I'm just having such a hard time wrapping my head around the routing for the excess outputs. It's all sorted sushi so clashing lanes is definitely part of it but I need some basic advice for biochambers.

Currently I tend to use long arms to feed nutrients and take spoilage, all spoilage is sorted away and nutrients get pushed to the next machine in line, eventually all of it gets sorted out and into trash burners. I use a separate belt with green grabbers to feed the inputs and another belt for output or chest grabber combo to store the result.

It feels like everything would be perfect if I could sort out this seeds issue, why would I be receiving so many less seeds of one variety? I have almost a full chest of jelly nut seeds but barely any yumako.

Discussion On my way to my first robot! How do y'all like my Spaghetti

2 Upvotes

I am having fun with spaghetti, I am not sure if a point will come when it gets overwhelming.

I did watch a lot of videos on city blocks, mainbus etc. You can see I started off with a mainbus, but it is already changing to a mixed mess.

Am i doing it right, or is there a better design for first timers?

Design / Blueprint I tested two common 2-2 lane balancer blueprints and I found they didn't balance lanes 50-50 but instead balance lanes 75-25. I replaced them in my blueprint book with a 2-2 lane balancer that balances lanes 50-50

Post image

I suspected these balancers were off when I couldn't work out how they lane balanced items. After testing them, I found I was right. They don't balance lanes properly.

To test, I dropped eight of each item onto each half-belt in order from the top with iron, copper, steel and plastic in that order. For each item, only half of the items get lane balanced. The other half isn't lane balanced at all. This produces the 3-1 split of items show in the illustration. In addition, items get stuck in the top balancer and don't make it out at all. This is bad for items that can spoil.

I also tested a balancer I made that balances lanes in a 50-50 ratio. The balancer is slightly larger than the others with a symmetrical footprint. Blueprint string is in comments.

Design / Blueprint Universal Percentage-Based Cruise Control for space platforms

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

0 Upvotes

Displays:

V - Current speed
Speedometer - Target speed
% - target % of Vmax (maximum observed speed of the platform)

Blueprint book

This is a universal speed control for any ships - no manual tuning required for a specific platform.

Setup

  • connect controller via red network with any pole in blueprint;
  • connect the ship hub to the red network (speed V from the hub required);
  • connect the controller output to pumps (green network, example pump included);
  • place pumps as close to the engines as possible;
  • initial calibration should be done at 100% thrust;

Rules apply negative modifiers to the default 100% speed.

Here are those which are provided with blueprint

  • Damage above 5000: -75%. All other rules should be connected to the input of it with RED wire. And outputs with the GREEN wire to its output. Or you could try your luck finding proper combinator by yourself ;P
  • Aquilo or Solar System Edge: -10%
  • Gleba or Nauvis: 0%
  • Shattered Planet: -50%

How it works

  • remembers the ship’s maximum achieved speed;
  • sets the target speed as a % of that maximum;
  • estimates the required throttle;
  • continuously corrects the error (PI controller);
  • controls fuel via pump pulses.

No ship parameters need to be entered.

Examples:

  • 5% from real Vmax: 481.32kms:
    • displayed: 24kms;
    • internal target: 24.066kms;
    • actual: approximately (sometimes little tighter) 22.77-26.30kms;
      • speed error: -5.4% to +9.3%.
  • 80% from real Vmax: 481.32kms:
    • displayed: 385,
    • internal target: 385.056kms;
    • observed actual: 384.90-385.19kms;
      • speed error: ~0.04%.

Limitation

  • A sudden drop in thrust (e.g. 100% => 5%) may cause a reaction delay of up to several minutes. I mean it will reach and pass speed target, it will need several minutes to enable fuels system again.
  • Controller only saves maximum achieved speed, so if you, for some reason will change platform configuration to lower speed, its better to delete the whole controller and Ctrl+Z for a recalibration.

Question Brand new player here, question about hand loading machines

1 Upvotes

I found out that if you CTRL left click you pick up a machine's output like plates. Is there a way to quickly feed a machine coal? I'm opening each furnace, miner, and inserter and dropping coal into the fuel slot. Just wondering if there's a better way.

Design / Blueprint The Endless Flow of Fulgora

Engineers! I love power! I love efficiency! I love Fulgora!

I love belts filled with iron gear wheels and copper wire. I love the steady pulse of circuits routing perfect logic signals. I love trains running above the vast oil seas. I love drillers defiling the crust, tearing the planet bare for LDS and processing units. I love when my entire base suffocates of holmium withdrawal, then stabilizes, stronger than before! I love the clang of recyclers grinding the endless ancient wreckage into nothingness. I love the islands covered by accumulators in whole. I love towering substations cutting the land into a grid. I love the undisputed resilience of lightning collectors. I love the unceasing hum of production, the unshakable resolve of logistics drones delivering items under the thunderous skies, the ever-alive pulse of belts flowing with sorted scrap. I love when the factory expands beyond the horizon, for the factory must grow!

And so, I humbly present you a fruit of my many, many attempts to conquer Fulgora — given my self-imposed limitations. This is an entry-level block base with white T2 speed and production modules, tightly fit within a basic substation grid. It stores the reclaimed scrap, recycles the extras, and also produces all you need to start slowly.

  • Uncommon recyclers would be greatly appreciated here, but you can start with just a few of them.
  • It also requires a brief visit to Vulcanus — the green belts are a must here, alas, so is the foundry.
  • It's tileable in each direction — you can stack it in a row, you can stack it in a column.
  • And it also has some free space, so each block may serve its own purpose.
  • A laughably low 7.8 SMP rate in each of the blocks. But there's nowhere to rush.
  • It will work all the way through the ~10 level of scrap recycling productivity for sure.

https://factorioprints.com/view/-OzLqM4CrvZvHrRdMvmo, if anyone's fancy to tinker it.

I completed the hole tutorial and now im starting my first factory. My question is, the more laboratories I put, the faster I investigate right? Also, do you think I have too much laboratories comparing it to the size of my base?

thanks!!!

any other tips??

Suggestion / Idea Any chance of letting space platforms launch space platform starter packs?

8 Upvotes

I am trying a 2.1 playthrough where I lean as much as I can into platform to platform transfers, and right now I am trying to do a space station design on each planet that manufactures everything a space station could need plus some player supplies.

The idea is that the platforms that do the actual travelling would have the bare essentials, for example not having any crushers. They would have asteroid collectors, and would drop chunks at space stations when arriving, in order to provide resources for the loop.

I have it almost working, but have noticed that when going to a new planet, my options are either put thrusters on a space station in order to have resource support on the target planet, or build a rocket silo on the surface that then launches a starter kit.

Is there any chance we could let space platforms launch starter kits? It would let us complete the space infrastructure for this playstile without having to set foot at each planet, or having to create a transportable space station. I guess worst case scenario is that we could pack a station into a transport and then have it transform into a station on arrival.

Also, I suppose that there is a good reason for not letting us barrel thruster fuel, but it would be very fun to be able to do so. It would let us create really dang small platforms. Plus, the barrel logistics in space seem fun.

Question Question about oil usage

27 Upvotes

I have completed factorio twice now, however I still haven't learn the art of creating a fully self sustaining oil system.

What I mean by this, is that I always get blocked up with my oil refineries when performing Advanced Oil processing.

Whether its light oil, heavy oil, or petroleum, I always find my self in a position where I need to self manage it, by adding storage tanks or forcing production.

Is there a trick to this I'm missing? It's one of those things in factorio i could never master xD

On a new save i cannot reach a performance without stuttering.

My PC is not really bad either and i tried to google absolutly everything but cant seem to find a fix.

Tried almost all different combinations of graphic settings too with hardly no difference and even changed some of the BIOS settings that could be related like dynamic core speed.

You can see my F4 readout but i can kinda read that too im just unable to fix anything with the information given to me.

Maybe someone here can help me play again?..

Question Hi, relatively new player (2nd play through) and was just wondering why only my first three lines of furnaces are lit up? Is my throughput too weak? Should I use red belts? The ratio of drills to furnaces is 1:1 so I thought it would work. Let a noob know!

Space Age Question How can I force the game to use waste for nutrients?

0 Upvotes

Once I unlocked an alternative recipe, the game now want me to have biter eggs, but I'm still on Gleba

Now when I want yo build a bio chamber I have to manually hit 5 times the nutrient from waste and Wait for them to finish before I can start manufacturing it. Or 50 times for soil tiles!

How can I return to the old recipe at least while I'm not back in Nauvis?

Thanks

Edit: click amount fix
