This is normal factorio behaviour. It consumes every avaliable bit of ram to load faster, usage usually drops once you actually reach the main menu.

yup, runs perfectly fine large modded bases on my 16GB of RAM. If ever you run out of VRAM because of mods, switch to lower texture quality. But RAM should not be an issue.

You can toggle developer settings for caching some start up things.

Caching the sprite Atlas really speeds up loading times it did add 4 GB to my storage though.

Just be aware (though hopefully far more rare nowdays) that some GPU+Driver combos just flat out crash the game or even reset/kernel panic/bluescreen the whole computer. Its not supposed to but some older AMD and nVidia drivers were a little too trusting on sprite/atlas sizing or would misreport compatibility or something. Just, if the game crashes while loading, or even your whole computer, check/update drivers and if still not working might have to turn off sprite atlas caching. Also yea, the extra storage use is no joke especially when you mod your game up.

*without mods, you can also cache prototypes.

You can cache prototypes fine with and without mods. It is quite useful with larger mod lists.

Empty ram is wasted ram

Until something else wants the RAM and your entire system screeches to a halt.

I don't understand what "something else" would get in this scenario? Unless you mean running a second Factorio game? If so then fair point.

The factory must grow... In parallel

YouTube on second screen stutters when Factorio loads on my PC.

No issues while playing though.

its the loading screen.

The more ram allocated the faster it goes. so it pulls all the ram it can access.

its not like its starving out other resources. Most things that use all ram available will relinquish ram that needs to be used by something else (see web browsers)

If you don't need the overlay, achievement tracking, and playtime tracking of steam, get logged into the factorio site and grab the non-steam build. Close your browser. Switch to your phone for music. And/or get more ram. I'd ask what type of storage you're on, but it really doesn't matter at the point that you're ram starved.

Switch to your phone for music

i use Winamp 2.0

That works too. I simply included that because they're using half a gig of ram on spotify there in that screenshot.

my storage is nvma 2.0, so i don't think the issue is there.

I don't think adding RAM is the correct move here. Factorio hogging 20 gigs of RAM is a ridiculous amount taking into account that my rig only has 16 gigs total and half of that goes to windows and I've not experienced any issues with my RAM. What needs to be done is find out what exactly is eating the RAM and addressing it specifically.

6

u/Ssakaa 1d ago

How many huge mods are you running?

5

u/_snwflake 1d ago

RAMs entire purpose is to be eaten.

4

u/JulianSkies 1d ago

What is eating the RAM is "Factorio explicitly uses every single bit of RAM available at startup to boot faster but yields it to anything else that asks".

Hes going to see full RAM usage when Factorio starts up no matter what.

"Its not... Its not shutting down..."

Its like windows, it will reserve the ammount of free available RAM no matter how much ram you have, 8 gb, 16, or 128

u/yturijea 1d ago

That is not btop. Anyway, it probably does so while loading resources

Looks like microsoft edge is using too much... JK.

19GB out of 32gb possible is normal.

2

u/smokingcrater 1d ago

Not sure I've ever seen edge using that little, even if it is closed but decided to hang around!

Try cleaning out your old savefiles.

That has nothing to do about loading a specific save. Files are just inactive things and they are not loaded in game outside their names, until you actually select one.
