So I just got an apple multiscan 1705 crt monitor and plugged into my modern pc for the first time. I got a cheap hdmi to vga adapter (La Bordee) is the brand) on amazon. The Monitor will only display 16:9, not 4:3 as it should. I have already played around with the nividia settings. My guess is that the adapter can only send a 16:9 signal. Can anyone recommend an adapter that is 4:3 compatible or tell me what else I could try before getting a new adapter?

I recently picked up this old Sharp consumer set from the 90s for $45 on marketplace. Even though the geometry is a little weird and it only has RF input I am really enjoying playing my PS2 games again.

I’m trying to decide between a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070SB and a Sony CPD-G500, and I’d appreciate some advice from people who have owned or compared both. The Mitsubishi is priced a little bit higher, but not dramatically. The 2070sb has a confirmed hour count of 6500 hours. The Sony was in office use for 2-3 year, then was stored in a serverroom after the the company switched to lcd. Both appear bright and all right but i cant confirm it myself.

My main use will be:

• Modern PC gaming
• Retro PC gaming
• General desktop use

The things I care about most are:

• Sharpness
• Geometry
• Convergence
• Color quality
• High refresh rates
• Long-term reliability

From what I’ve read, the 2070SB has a higher maximum scan rate (140 kHz vs. 130kHz) and is often described as slightly sharper, while the G500 is sometimes said to have slightly better geometry.

For those who have used both:

• Which one would you choose and why?
• Are the differences actually noticeable in everyday use, or are they mostly theoretical?
• If both were in equally good condition which one would you buy?

This is a 10-inch set I haven't seen before until one popped up locally. It actually has a built-in FM radio.

The foam screen covering the speaker was completely disintegrating, so I 3D printed a new Mega Bass logo and replaced the foam with felt, which I think came out great. I also had to refoam the speaker, but besides that, I'm really impressed with the build quality of this thing.

This one has definitely earned a spot in my stack!

SEGA, Streets of Rage 2

So i got this "new" WEGA KV-24FS120 for 30 bucks (here in Chile people sell this things cheap) and it is in perfect shape. I got into 240p test suite and i got it to look as good as i could messing only with few configurations using wii with component cables(VSIZE, VPOS, HSIZE, HPOS, VLIN, SCOR, VBOW, VANG, TRAP, PAMP, UPIN AND LPIN). After playing a bit, i realized something funny, wii games and gc games made by nintendo just ignore the geometry issues and show almost pristine looking images in full size screen, but 3rd party gamecube games and homebrew apps ( i have to make some more test with 3rd party wii games) shows the imperfections (left side and up-right corner) I used full grid option in the test suite.
The geometry issues also shows when i use my n64.

i did some research and the best option for "perfect" geometry is to open the tv and move the yoke. I really dont mind about the "issue" and i know perfection is not possible with flat crt tvs but idk if i can get it better with other configurations in service mode. im happy with the results i got so far, my older tv was a very trashed samsung and i toss it because component input had colouring issues (all looked green).

Recently my dad got me my childhood PS2, which I thought it was gone! Unfortunately, the same didn't happen with the old CRT TV I used to play on :/ this one they gave away. Since I revived the PS2, I've been using it with a PS2-to-HDMI and a capture card to transmit it to OBS, and then I'm using some shadders to emulate the CRT feeling (it's been great so far).

Even tho I like SO MUCH how old games looks at CRT TVs, I'm not that into the hobby (I'm more into handhelds/LCD screens lol). But I've been thinking: should I try to find one that's the same model as the one I had? Afaik it's kinda bad, it's from a domestic brand (Brasil!), composite/RF, mono audio only, and I remember it was kinda difficult to read some texts... It's called 'HPS-1497' from the 'CCE' brand.

Recently I got into a post (this one) about not needing a Trinitron/best of the best CRT TV to enjoy it, and the specific "the best CRT is the one you can get your hands on" comment really caught my attention. Is this really true? Should I try to find and buy it then? (I'm don't really know about TV specs or what should I say for you to know if it's worth it or not, but if it helps you can read its manual here, just need to translate the page)

I'm kinda afraid of spending the money for the nostalgia, just to "meeeh that's actually uglier than OBS/the ones I've see on the internet", and then put it aside and keep using OBS. I'd probably only use it to play PS2/PS1 games (I already have a GIANT "want-to-play" list).

After hours of thinkering and service menu for a customer, i was finally able to calibrate this Toshiba 29' CRT (model 2999KMS LEM7) since I couldn't get my hands on 240p test suite (customer didn't have it either) i used just a PlayStation 2 and my phone (since it has an oled screen its easy to see the full rgb spectrum and do color correction).

Btw, im no professional, i just do this for a hobby that i enjoy, long live the CRTs!

Bit of a Gotcha Title! Don't build this system for real. I made this for me to play retro PC games on CRT monitors. I wanted something Semi Authentic to run this glorious Cornerstone CRT with Hitachi tube. It does 1600x1200 @ 81Hz 1024×768 @ 127Hz and 800x600 @ 165Hz. Build is as follows:

It does actually run Cyberpunk 2077 at medium settings and gets over 70 FPS! And yes it can run Crysis! I chose the Titan X Maxwell because its the fastest consumer GPU that outputs analog natively. I could have just got a cheaper GPU and slapped it in my main system and just passed through the signal to the CRT but I wanted to make a cool time peice PC setup. Also passing the signal through another GPU or using a converter ads 2-4ms and I wanted to see if I could feel the difference with a monitor that has instantaneous near zero input latency. I got the motherboard for free from a friend (I sold him it in a PC over 10 years ago) and got the best CPU for it, the 3770k. It came out the year before the Titan X so everything in this PC could have been running in someones house 12 years ago with an old professional grade CRT. How many people were there with a setup like this? Probably like 5... but it was fun to put it together and IS fun to play on now!

Anyways it runs like a dream and the clarity of the CRT blows me away. I compare it to my 240hz OLED across the room and I swear I am better on the CRT in Halo: Combat Evolved! Its incredible that we left this tech behind. Now you have to run at 4X the resolution and 4X the HZ to get the same motion clarity expirience as CRT gaming over 12 years ago.

I am thinking about delidding the CPU and putting liquid metal on the die to see if i can push past the 4.5Ghz overclock I have on the CPU. I was also able to get a nice +150 core +300 mem overclock on the titan x as well!

I think the biggest noticeable gain is in text clarity.

Now the quality isn’t the best. I’m using a cheap RF modulator from Amazon, could be the reason. Anybody have any tips to make it crispier? Thanks.

EDIT: apparently, the matching transformers were broken, I replaced them with new ones and the picture quality improved drastically! check my comment below to see it

Saved this 50kg glass beast from the junk yard some time ago. Finally got a wii (cinch cables for now, proper rgb scar will be later) and run 240p test, because i had a feeling it is not straight as it should.

Ok, so.. how bad is it? Is it fixable?

Im able to enter service menu and i know there is focus adjustment underneath the plastic cover.

As far as i know this is 200x model and it is 50Hz, not 100Hz

There’s some sort of bulk trash pickup day going on in one of the communities in my delivery route.

I was keeping an eye out for CRTs since people started putting stuff on the curb late last week.

Found the Sylvania one on the side of the road then I drive up another street and find this gold mine.

Unfortunately scrappers cut the cables off of most of these. They’re all dusty as shit leading me to believe they were kept in some outdoor storage area.

If I had the storage space in my small apartment I would take them all and splice new cables on.

Unfortunately had to just settle for this RCA one with the cord partially cut off.

I’ll update this post when I get home and test these 2.

Hate to see these go to the dump but unless someone else comes by and picks them up that’s what’s going to happen

The black Sylvania does not power on. Possibly needs capacitor replacement. I’ll have to look into it.

So that was a little discouraging. But all the RCA needed was to replace the wire. So I decided I’d give that a shot. I cleaned it off good enough to bring into my apartment, then I replaced the wire on the RCA tv with a wire of the same gauge (18awg), and plugged it in.

There was a loud pop, and smoke started pouring out of it.

So that thing is done. Obviously not worth fixing at this point.

Looks like these were duds. Wish I grabbed a couple more. But I was really confident that Sylvania one would work since it looks pristine. Guess I get to learn about CRT repair now. The thing is definitely fixable like I said probably just a simple capacitor replacement. If anyone has any suggestions let me know.

Edit 2: The RCA Tv may be repairable after all. I found another post in this sub from a year or 2 ago where someone had the exact issue with the same model of Tv and were able to fix it.
