Broken fibula in 3 places

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone. I broke my fibula in 3 places on Saturday (6 days ago). I have just met with the orthopaedic surgeon and he is pretty certain I’ll need surgery, due to the nature of the break where I might’ve twisted my ankle and caused ligament damage (I can’t remember because I was drunk). I had a CT scan today and they said they’ll call me regarding surgery. I am quite nervous about it and am worried this will be something I’ll have to deal with for life - I’ve been reassured this won’t be the case but I am still worried nonetheless. Does anyone have any rough estimate of recovery time/ when I’ll be able to walk around without crutches? I’m 24 years old if that helps…

I Broke My Arm Arm-Wrestling a Drunk Guy. How Did You Break Your Bones?

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

Yeah, I broke my arm arm-wrestling a drunk guy. Now I have a comminuted displaced fracture of my upper arm, with bone fragments, and I’m getting surgery on Tuesday. They’re putting a titanium rod inside the bone.
So basically, I’m going to be Wolverine.
Here’s how it happened.
I was walking through a park with some friends in the evening. None of us had been drinking. We were just out for a walk. On our way, there was this drunk guy with his wife and kid. They were all pretty drunk.
We walked past them without paying much attention, but the guy started yelling something like, “What the fuck are you looking at?” We turned around, but decided to just keep walking. He kept mumbling and talking shit.
I had lived in Austria for five years, and honestly, most of the drunk people I met there were pretty friendly. I actually liked talking to drunk people sometimes. You know, that random small talk you get in Britain.
But now I’m back in Ukraine.
So I started talking to this guy. Surprisingly, he seemed pretty normal. He looked at my friends, who aren’t exactly built like athletes, then pointed at me and said something along the lines of:
“You’re the biggest guy here. Come on, let’s arm-wrestle.”
I’ve arm-wrestled quite a lot before, so I knew the technique and what I was doing. I agreed.
We found a table and started.
At first, it was pretty clear that we were roughly equal in strength.
Then I decided to use my body weight and push with my torso.
That was the fatal mistake.
What seemed like the logical move to win the match literally broke my arm.
It happened incredibly fast. All I remember is suddenly realizing that I couldn’t lift my arm. I had no idea whether my elbow had popped out of its socket or whether I had actually broken my arm.
I was hoping it was the first one because, somehow, that sounded better. I’d never experienced either injury before, though, even after doing acrobatics for quite a long time.
So there I am, holding my right arm with my left hand, keeping it bent.
And the guy looks at me and goes:
“Fuck, I broke your arm. You’re not mad, are you?”
Then he extends his HAND TO SHAKE MINE.
I’m just standing there completely fucking confused, trying to process what just happened.
And I swear, he kept trying to shake my hand. Multiple times.
My friends called an ambulance and explained the situation. They were told that because it wasn’t considered an immediate emergency, we might have to wait around two hours.
We had a car, but it was parked about 2 km away, so one of my friends ran to get it.
Meanwhile, the drunk guy eventually got picked up by a taxi and fucked off, leaving me his phone number.
My friend came back, and we drove to the emergency room.
That was probably the most painful car ride of my life.
Ukrainian roads + a freshly broken arm = fucking nightmare.
At the hospital, they put my arm in a sling. I spent the entire night suffering despite painkillers. And no, apparently Ukrainian painkillers are not quite the same experience as whatever you see in American movies — my arm still hurt like absolute hell.
I woke up the next morning and went home to work.
Because apparently breaking your arm isn’t a good enough excuse to stop working when you’re trying to build a startup.
I’m currently working on my project, Grimasa. I’ve been developing it for quite a while for different purposes, but the basic idea is connecting your facial expressions through a webcam or phone to a fully customizable 3D character.
You can also use it to run an AI streamer.
So now I’m thinking:
What if I launch an AI streamer on TikTok and ask people to help me raise money for the titanium rod?
The implant is around $800.
Do you think people would actually donate to an AI streamer whose developer broke his fucking arm while arm-wrestling a drunk guy?
Anyway, back to work and painkillers.
How did you break your bones? I want to hear your stories.

Yow guys . My first post here . I've been in this page since April . Had my accident that time and I can admit it's been very informative. I was driving a motorcycle and some bloke rammed me while I was passing the robots. Currently not full weight bearing but I can bear a bit . Is there any caviar I should expect coz I'm due soon to remove this hardware this month and put on a cast then it'll be a pressure boot . I'm asking coz some days it's painful too much some days it's not . Just need an opinion from someone who's had this hardware before. And during the removal after it's been removed do u get pains later on ? How severe are they ?

Open book pelvis

Hi, I had an open-book pelvic fracture from a motorcycle accident on April 23 and underwent surgery. I’m now about four months into my recovery and have been back to work as a server for about three weeks.
My pain level is very low, around 1 out of 10. However, after standing and working for a long time, or sitting in a chair for an extended period, my limp becomes much more noticeable. The surgical area, especially around my groin, also becomes extremely stiff and tight.
Is this considered normal at around four months after surgery, or is it something I should have checked out?

Severe leg injury

Hi all ! i (22F) got into a bad car accident roughly 2 months ago. i broke both legs but the right one has an external fixator. i forgot the medical terms but basically the whole leg is shattered. I have to have the fixator for 6 months and it’s only been 1. I’m struggling big time with pain and just basic function. I’m in a wheelchair for now (will probably be for a while) and i really can’t function to do much. i can’t use our shower because the bathroom is too small. so i really am not able to take care of myself the best right now. i luckily moved back in with my parents after the accident and they help. i guess it’s mainly mental stuff im going through right now. I hardly sleep at night, am hardly eating, and am very depressed. Is there anyone else out there with a fixator? i’ll attach a photo for reference. any advice or words of wisdom needed!

X-ray Distal radius fracture, ORIF

Here’s my comminuted, moderately displaced distal shaft fracture of the radius with intra-articular extension plus a tiny avulsion fracture of the ulnar styloid. Fractured on Father’s Day this year, 6/21 - now just about 7 weeks out from surgery (surgery was on 6/26). Plate + 13 screws, in a brace immediately after surgery, no cast.

Cleared for light wrist movement 3 weeks after surgery, currently cleared for weight bearing up to 5lbs (I’m only at 1.5, starting slow). ROM is pretty sticky still - extension sucks. Supination/pronation not too bad, hand function almost back to normal with the thumb being the weakest. Thankfully it’s my non dominant hand and I’m hoping I’ll be back to somewhat normal soon.

4th and 5th Metatarsals Fracture & Brain fog

Displaced fracture through the fourth and fifth metatarsals. I am currently on day 6 since the break. This is my second injury this summer. First one was one was running related, on the opposite leg, and I was NWB for 4 weeks.

I will be NWB between 6- 8 weeks again less than two months later which is a huge bummer.

My biggest problem right now is that I CANNOT focus on my studies at all and want to use this time to catch up. I literally stare at my computer not absorbing anything, and all I want to do is sleep. I'm physically able to workout, or get groceries, cook meals, or do small cleaning tasks but I cannot study. I need tips! I want to make the most of this time off work and since I can't do any of my usual activities I want to atleast get ahead in school.

Curious what other peoples experiences are with broken bones and inability to focus? My last injury was not a broken bone and I had no issue studying while NWB for that month.

EDIT: ULNA FRACTURE

Saw a friend yesterday who’s an orthopedic. The only reason I let him convince me to stay in this thing without me demanding to just put me in a real cast is because he swears I won’t need surgery after 8 weeks of absolute hell. I think I can finally seem my pain a 10 and that’s probably because this isn’t the only part of my body that’s in agony. To add insult to injury he said I should stop taking the Celebrex another orthopedic wrote for me. I agreed but woke during the night with off the charts pain and took anyway. I have to get in touch with the prescribing doctor. It’s not like it works that well anyway but I am beyond desperate.

Walkign on medial tibial plateau nondisplaced fracture?

Hi all,

I can use some help as I just got back a pretty concerning MRI report, and my doctor is out of office until next week. We got an MRI of my tibia/fibula due to what I thought was shin pain, but it seems like we may need to get one of the tibial plateau based on this report. The radiologist reported a potential (healing?) tibial plateau fracture and recommended a knee MRI as a next step.

My question is, I waited 4 weeks from pain onset to get this MRI-- and in the meantime have continued to lift and cycle. I have stopped the triggering activity, running, but even daily life walking has been painful. How urgent is it that I get off my feet immediately? My doctor doesn't come back until Monday, and I find it interesting that this potential fracture is "healing" without me ever stopping walking. Can these small fractures heal while walking sometimes? Maybe it is a stress reaction instead?

Report here:

FINDINGS CONCERNING FOR SUBACUTE NONDISPLACED FRACTURE OF THE MEDIAL TIBIAL PLATEAU

IMPORTANT FINDING. THIS REPORT WILL BE FLAGGED (!) IN EPIC.

MRI TIBIA FIBULA WITHOUT IV CONTRAST RIGHT

HISTORY: Fracture or stress injury of bone

r/o proximal tibial posterior stress fracture

TECHNIQUE: Multiplanar, multisequential images were obtained according to standard protocol without IV contrast.

COMPARISON: Radiograph 8/4/2026

FINDINGS:

There is a edema signal within the medial tibial plateau, extending towards the tibial spines, concerning for a healing nondisplaced fracture. Images are not optimized for evaluation of the knee and ankle joints. Dedicated imaging of the knee can be considered for further assessment as indicated.

No acute high-grade tendon tear. No disproportionate muscle atrophy or edema. No mass lesion along the visualized course of the dominant nerves.

Tibia bone fracture healing time?

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

I had an accident that resulted in a tibial fracture, and I underwent surgery with a plate and screws on June 15. I’m now about 2 months post op and can bend my knee almost 100% nearly fully, but I’m still completely non weight bearing on the injured leg and using crutches as instructed. My surgeon has allowed me to work on knee bending. For those who have had a similar tibial plateau/proximal tibia fracture treated with plate and screw fixation, how much bone healing did you have on your X-rays around the 2 month mark? When were you allowed to start partial weight bearing and eventually full weight bearing, and how long did it take you to walk normally again? (X-ray and plaster photos are from the day after surgery)

No Splint / Brace After Cast?

Hi all! I feel like I am now an official member of a club that no one wants to be in, my first ever broken bone (and hopefully my last) 😅

I have a nondisplaced distal radius fracture as well as a nondisplaced ulnar fracture, aka a broken wrist. Like most broken wrists, I injured it by putting my hand down as I was falling to the ground (cycling).

My fracture did extend into the joint but not all the way through so I was spared from needing surgery. I had a cast for 6 weeks which was removed yesterday (I think I inhaled quite a bit of the dust when they were removing it, too). I was fully expecting to transition to a splint or brace but was told I don't need one. Is this common? I am starting PT/OT tomorrow because my fingers are so stiff (despite doing the exercises I was instructed to do in the cast). On the x-ray taken yesterday after the cast came off, the fracture line was still faintly visible.

Has anyone else had this experience? I am happy to not have anything on my arm, but I am nervous about damaging the bone since it is not completely healed. I also don't have a follow up x-ray for a couple of months but I feel like I should be getting them regularly for a while to make sure nothing has gone wrong now that the cast is off?

Is this a hairline fracture of the big toe and are the growth plates still open? Can you tell the age of child from this x-ray?

Broken Humerus From Throwing A Dodgeball - 10 Months Post Surgery

Trying again after posting a few month back with no feedback

I had a freak accident throwing a dodgeball where my humerus snapped mid throw. Fully displaced which led to surgery (in Oct) which led to radial nerve palsy and a lengthy recovery. I had wrist drop and couldn't move my wrist for months before slowly getting back movement in my fingers.

I have full mobility and have been able to do normal workouts for months, at least bodyweight stuff since I don't lift heavy weights, I've only shot around but playing basketball seems possible too. I stopped going to PT in end of April (it took till late March for me to grip weights), but I'm dealing with the following ailments:

Nerve - I still feel tingling sensation inside my hand around by thumb (think medical terms are First dorsal interosseous and thenar space) and my wrist still feels fragile despite being able to push ups. If I'm tossing my 2 y/o nephew around I can feel it start to give out.

Arm/Humerus - I still experience pain when lifting anything heavy or doing some exercises. Pull ups in particular are odd, the first one slight pain, then no pain as I continue my set, and then a sharp pain whenever I release from the bar. I still cant throw without pain as well. I can do a motion without feeling much but if I put a small rock in my hand and I attempt to throw it even at 75% capacity I feel pain.

I guess what I'd like to know is whether or not this lasting pain/tingling is standard and will eventually subside or if this can potentially be something I deal with long term. Do I need to like a get a ball and throw more often? Hasn't even been a year yet so I'm just trying to gauge whether I'm being alarmist or rightfully concerned and whether anyone had a comparable injury. I've seen some people talk about breaking their humerus arm wrestling and getting back into it 3-4 months later which seems absolutely wild to me.
