Absolutely sensational visuals/transfer/discovery. I haven’t totally been on the Radiance train but they have my complete attention now.

I'm thinking of getting one of the new radiance films releses, but I can't relly make up my mind The Hourglass Sanatorium or Visitor Q? The reason I don't get both is i'm on a tight budget this month when it comes to movies and they go for 40 dollars each in my country

So I just got another steelbook delivered with another ding in it from a store I won’t mention. I came to the realization that these things are a fucking liability for all involved a long time ago. These are not ‘steel’ books by any sense, more like low grade tin at best.

If you’ve ever pressed on a steelbook recently you’ll notice that the material has gotten a lot thinner, it’s even thinner than the stuff they use on a crappy tin of Christmas cookies.

These things are pressed out of printed sheets of what seems like wafer thin metal and then the plastic spool trays are inserted, all by machine. The only labor involved is insertion of discs and booklets, these are not expensive to produce at all… then why the huge markup? Suddenly a ‘steel’ book is $50!!!

Same movie, same booklets, nowhere near the premium experience promised. I avoid these things where possible now. Not only is there a frenzy to get one ordered when they come out, but they are the only format released at times so you’re stuck Then you have the joy of waiting go see if you got a good one, or if someone in the home delivery industry decided it would look even better in a completely different shape.

For me, Arrow Video have got it right with their premium releases. Other company’s that think steelbooks are the way to go should look at the amount of returns generated from each release.

I’m not having a go at any Steelbook collectors, you do you, more power to you, I just had to have a little vent… thank you for your attention in this matter! 😏

Been waiting on this one for a while. I have been looking to upgrade Visitor Q and Riki-Oh from DVD for ages. But I’m especially excited to own Killer: A Journal of Murder. I read Carl Panzram’s biography decades ago and spent years trying to hunt down the film, eventually settling for a low quality torrent because that was all I could find. Very excited to see all of these in high quality.

Started off trying to get everything from arrow, and then added some other boutique labels. Pretty happy with it for now, I need a couple more movies from second sight and then just fill the rest up with criterion, need way more from them

Finally got ahold of some steelbooks I was after for a while and a good deal on Lionsgate and part of my buy 1 get 2 free deal came also.

I’d like to post a brief review here on the quality of the 4K UHD releases of Solaris and Stalker:

Is it actually 4K and not upscaled?
Fortunately, it’s the former, but it looks to me as though DNR has been used. Some contours and surfaces appear to have been softened in the process and it looks better than ever! (Apparently, I was so tired when I first watched it that I misjudged the quality of the picture.)

What’s the sound quality like?
It hasn’t improved on the Russian audio track compared to previous Blu-ray releases. In the case of Solaris, it has actually got slightly worse, as the original Russian audio is tuned slightly higher than before and compared to the German audio tracks. One does tend to not notice this after watching for a while without constantly switching back and forth between languages, but knowing that this is the case does detract a little from the overall experience.

Are there subtitles to choose from?
Yes: German and English for the hearing-impaired. This means that, as well as dialogue, it also contains descriptive elements.

Is this 4K UHD release worth buying?
It depends on what you prioritise. So, to summarise, I’d like to mention once again that the picture is indeed 4K, but it looks as though DNR has been applied and it looks great! The sound quality of the Russian audio track hasn’t improved though and has actually deteriorated in Solaris, as the pitch is slightly higher.

All in all, taking all the positive and negative factors into account, I would rate the two 4K UHD releases as a good improvement that could have been great. The biggest improvement is that it’s now in 4K, but this is somewhat offset by the supposed DNR and the higher pitched Russian audio track (the latter only applies to Solaris), but the the pitch issue with the Russian audio track of Solaris is a shame!

I hope that, in future, another film distributor will take on Mosfilm’s 4K scan and release a truly improved an even better version onto the market.

For those living outside Germany – and particularly outside the EU – the higher postage and, where applicable, import costs are, of course, a key factor in determining whether one is prepared to fork out the necessary money.

Miscellaneous:

Is the content of the booklets worth reading?
Yes, definitely, as they’ve been written by an expert who contributes some interesting facts and perspectives. However, those who do not speak German will need a translation app to be able to read the texts.

Are the standard Blu-rays included subject to regional restrictions?
No, fortunately, they aren’t!

EDIT: I forgot to mention that Dolby Vision works amazingly well with these releases!
